ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHMEN CONVENE IN HISTORIC MEETING
The first Ecumenical Council in 92 years holds its first session in St. Peter's Basilica with 2,600 high church dignitaries from 55 countries taking part. Protestant churchmen are observers; the first time they have attended a Ecumenical Council since the one in 1545.
ALGERIA ADMITTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS
The flag of the new nation is raised outside of the U.N. headquarters before Premier Ahmed Ben Bella of Algeria addresses the General Assembly.
JAPANESE LAUNCHES HUGE OIL TANKER
The 'Nissho Maru' with a capacity of 132,000 deadweight tons, makes her first voyage before entering the Persian Gulf to being her oil carrying duties. She will carry 37,000,000 gallons a trip.
SELF PROPELLED WATER SKIS
The Germans have come up with a boat controlled by the water-skier that lets him be his own tow boat. He can steer and pick his speed, but he falls just as hard.
FOOTBALL FANS FIND MANY WAYS TO GET TO THEIR BELOVED GAMES
Boats, planes and cars carry fans to football games, at the University of Washington. It seems that half the fun is getting there; but nobody says anything about getting home.

NIGHT PROCESSION IN HONOR OF ECUMENICAL COUNCIL
St. Peters Square is the scene of a brilliant display as 15,000 torch bearers pay tribute to Church dignitaries assembled for the Ecumenical Council.
STORMS LASH WEST COAST AS TOLL MOUNTS
The worst Autumn storm to hit the West Coast in 50 years rips a path 1,000 miles long and 125 miles wide from California to British Columbia. Six inches of rain fell in three days and 46 persons die in the storm.
BELGIAN LANGUAGE FACTIONS CLASH
Tens of thousands of Flemish-speaking Belgians from the North parade in Brussels and clash with their French-speaking countrymen. Both want their languages used more in official business.

BASEBALL WORLD SERIES
It's nip and tuck right down to the wire as the New York Yankees nose out the San Francisco Giants for the World Series Championship. In a tight, thrill-packed 7th game, the Yankees score only one run, but pitcher Ralph Terry blanks the Giants and New York wins its 20th World Title.
PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY GREETS ASTRONAUT AND HIS SPACE FAMILY
There's a family gathering at the White House as the President receives astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr., and his family. Later, as the children wait outside, he receives his astronaut wings at the Pentagon for his six orbit space flight.
GERMAN MAN TOPS OFF GOOD MEAL WITH LIGHT BULBS AND THUMBTACKS
Berlin is a City of many gastronomical delights, but after much research we've been unable to find another man like our hero. He's the chef's delight who tops off a meal of a light bulb with side dishes of thumb-tacks and razor blades. Sometimes he eats with gusto; most of the time he eats alone.
GERMANS HOLD 'WHEEL' CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tourists in Europe often see sights that stand them on their heads and the popular Rhoen Wheel is one of them. This is a giant wheel guided by men or gals inside its perimeter. A fair lady and a male companion rolled off with the World Title this time around.

UNITED STATES AND ALLIES WARY AS THEY AWAIT THE REMOVAL OF MISSILES FROM CUBA
The curtain goes up at the United Nations on what the world hopes is the final act in the drama that was the Cuban Missile Crisis. Secretary General Of The United Nations U Thant confers with the U.S. and Soviet representatives before flying to Cuba to arrange for the dismantling of the Russian missile bases.
FRENCH PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE VOTING PLAN WINS APPROVAL
Neither Paris nor the rest of France is showing any great interest as the voters go to the polls to agree with President Charles DeGaulle that the French President should be elected by popular vote.
HORSE TROTTING
Neither snow, nor sleet, nor the mud underfoot will stay the trotters in the completion of their appointed rounds. In the United Nations trot the horses race through a snowstorm as an 25 to 1 outsider wins.

U.N. OPTIMISM NOT SHARED BY ALL OVER DISMANTLING OF CUBAN ROCKET BASES
U Thant, Acting Secretary General of the U.N., returns from his conference with Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro optimistic over the dismantling of rocket bases; an optimism not shared by others who have studied the dictator. The lights burn late in the White House as the navel quarantine is resumed and surveillance flights begin anew.
INDIA FIGHTS BACK AS WEST AIDS IN DEFENSE AGAINST RED CHINA INCURSION
The question of Red China comes up again in the United Nations and their bid for membership is quickly rejected in the wake of their attack on India. In India itself, Khrishna Menon is fired as Minister of Defense for refusing to recognize the danger of the Red Chinese attack.
QUEEN OPENS BRITISH PARLIAMENT
The pageantry that is the British Throne is mounted in all of its glory as the Queen rides forth on her traditional trip to open Parliament. This year there are sidelights provided by frightened horses. One horse throws his sentry and the Queen's carriage horses almost bolt when a flash-bulb scares them.
HIGH SOCIETY TURNS OUT FOR NATIONAL HORSE SHOW
Diamonds and tails, sleek horses and trim riders; they all add up to the 79th National Horse Show, the most glittering pageant of the New York fall social season. Jacks or Better and his rider, Ben O'Meara, take the Imperial Puissance, another in their long string of victories.

Your passport to yesterday is a ticket on one of the North American continent's most fascinating railroads. Passengers arrive by boat at Skagway to take a railroad excursion over the "Trail of '98" to the famous goldfields at Whitehorse.
DUTCH COMMEMORATE BALLOON ANNIVERSARY
Five balloons take off in the Netherlands to mark the Golden Anniversary of the first such flight in Holland. They follow the same rules that governed that Contest in 1932.
THE ART OF COLLAGE
A fugitive artist in Paris strips fences and walls of political and theatrical posters to make masterpieces of collage that he hopes will take the art world by storm.

REDS SAIL FROM CUBA WITH SOVIET MISSILES ABOARD
Bound for Moscow. Russian ships steam out from Cuban ports with their deck’s heavily laden with missiles the Soviets are withdrawing under pressure from the United States. U.S. planes and picket ships count a whopping 42 rockets.
FORMER FIRST LADY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT LAID TO REST
President Kennedy heads the list of distinguished world leaders who pay last tribute to the extraordinary and beloved woman who was Eleanor Roosevelt. After a simple ceremony at a Hyde Park, New York church she is laid to rest beside her cherished husband on their estate.
THEATRE OWNERS HONOR ACTOR GREGORY PECK AS 'STAR OF THE YEAR'
Theatre Owners of America, in convention at Bal Harbour, Florida, honor two Hollywood luminaries. Pert Suzanne Pleshette, soon to be seen in "Forty Pound Of Trouble" and "The Birds" is acclaimed "most exciting new star" and Gregory Peck, who has just completed "To Kill A Mockingbird" is hailed as "Star of the Year".

WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR KONRAD ADENAUER VISITS WASHINGTON
President John F. Kennedy welcomes West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to Washington. There's a reception with a 19-gun salute on the White House lawn before the two men begin a series of conferences on problems facing the West.
IT'S 'LONDON WEEK' IN SAN FRANCISCO
A bit of old blighty has been transported thousands of miles to San Francisco as the Bay City celebrates 'London Week', a festival to promote British trade. The Duke of Edinburgh is on hand to lend a serious facet to the proceedings.
HOLLYWOOD FILM 'FREUD' HAILED AT PREVIEW
Dartmouth College at Hanover, N.H., dedicated its new center for the visual and performing arts with a preview of Hollywood Producer Director John Huston's new picture "Freud", based on the life of the famed psychiatrist. Mr. Huston is awarded a scroll by the college for his contributions to the art of the motion picture.
EUROPEAN TRAMPOLINE COMPETITION
The World's Championships are held in Germany to pick the best of the trampoline artists. It's a topsy-turvy world as Europe's best compete for the women's and the men's crown.

PEOPLE OF INDIA RALLY TO FIGHT RED CHINESE INCURSION
The people of India rally behind Prime Minister Nehru to fight the invasion of Red China on the home front. Women donate their jewelry, men their gold coin, to fund the war effort. Thousands flock to centers to donate blood for shipment to the northern front.
PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY DEDICATES NEW 'DULLES FIELD' AIRPORT
The first airport to be built in the jet age is named for the former Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles. Giant 'mobile lounge' transport passengers from terminal to plane are introduced.
ISLAND OF GUAM IS DEVASTATED BY ROARING TYPHOON
The Pacific Island is hit by winds of up to 207 mph., as Typhoon Karen sweeps across the Island. Only six people are killed, but the damage is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
U.S. GENERAL LUCIUS CLAY VISITS BERLIN WALL
General Lucius Clay, the President's representative, tours the Berlin Wall while in the city for an American-German conference. He surprises onlookers by chinning himself up on the high barricade of communism .
AFRICAN RHINO ORPHAN ADAPTS TO HIS NEW HUMAN FAMILY
Rupert, orphaned and alone, is adopted by a game warden's family and has the time of his young life romping with the children and the family dog. He's jumped from 150 to 350 pounds in six months and dieting seems to do no good at all.

The Crimson Tide of Alabama suffers its first defeat after 27 wins when an inspired Georgia Tech team holds them to one touchdown. The margin of victory is a lone point after touchdown.
