British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, and Soviet Leader Josef Stalin at the Yalta Conference in February 1945. Return of the Polish Government-in-Exile to Warsaw as Stalin had agreed. Polish leader Mikolajczyk and the rigged Polish parliamentary elections. Soviet Marshal Rokossowski inspecting troops as he assumes control of Poland ending all Polish independence in November 1949. In Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary, the pattern of Soviet domination and occupation continues as Communism forces out all other forms of Government. Stalin ignores the protest of Britain and the United States as he knows the West had demobilized and would not take military action. The take-over of Czechoslovakia by the Soviets or the Czech coup. In just five days the Communist took over the Czechoslovakia Government. Czech President Benes who was allowed to retire. Body of Czech Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk laying-in-state and crowds in mourning.

The Soviets efforts to create internal strife in Turkey was not of sufficient strength so the take-over of Turkey failed. In Greece the effort to spread Communism brought death and despair. To aid Greece and Turkey and stop the spread of Communism, U.S. President Truman appears before Congress in March 1947 asking for immediate aid be sent to Greece and Turkey.

In March 1947 President Harry S. Truman speaking before Congress asked for support of a new policy that would become known as the Truman Doctrine. Truman stated it must be the policy of the United States to support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. Congress quickly agreed and in an effort to stop the spread of Communism the United States developed the Marshall Plan to aid the countries of Europe. Aid was sent to Turkey and Greece.

The Soviets and Communist agitators tried to defeat the Marshall Plan. Communist inspired riots in France, Italy and other countries of Europe. This led to the signing of the Brussels Treaty in March 1948 by Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg creating a collective mutual assistance and defense alliance.

The countries of the west used aircraft flying all supplies into the City of Berlin in an effort to defeat the Berlin Blockade imposed by Russia.
