Japan 1948 - Road To Democracy

Brief images of Japanese troops marching, Japanese Army fighting in China, and Japanese planes bombing Pearl harbor in 1941. Shows total destruction of Hiroshima immediately after the dropping of the atomic bomb. Japanese working in the rubble and slowly the reconstruction amid the ruins of Hiroshima began to take shape. Not only was new buildings being built, but the idea of a peaceful democracy began to be embraced by the Japanese people. Shows General MacArthur, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, leaves the American Embassy in Tokyo. Shows the Allied powers at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. The two general objectives for the occupation of Japan was to smash the Japanese war machine and the establishment of a peaceful responsible government.

Japan was beating it's swords into the necessities of life. Civilian goods started to appear in stores. Shows pages of the Constitution of Japan (effective May 3, 1947). Emperor Hirohito speaks to children and mingles with a crowd as he became a "Constitutional Monarch" similar to England's King. Political candidates make speeches and the Japanese people, men and women, vote. Shows the Japanese people watching the election returns. Shows the newly elected National Assembly. Scenes of the prewar Imperial Diet, that could be dissolved by the Emperor at will. Shows new freedoms enjoyed by the Japanese people under the new Constitution of Japan. Describes the three Judge system of civilian trials in Japan. Explains the disestablishment of the Shinto religion. Shows establishment of new methods of teaching in school system of Japan. Shows freedom of expression as newspapers are published. New methods of health care is introduced to the Japanese people.
