Names black (African-American) non-combatants who received distinguished Navy Service Awards for bravery in WWII. Flashback to brief image of bombing of Pearl Harbor, African-American Doris "Dorie" Miller, first African-American awarded the Navy Cross for bravery while his ship was under attack at Pearl Harbor. CU of Navy Cross Medal. Elbert H. Oliver awarded the Silver Star, CU image of a Silver Star Medal. William Pinckney and Leonard Roy Harmon awarded the Navy Cross Medal in 1942. U.S. Navy Steward Mates receiving training in aircraft recognition, ship compartmentation, and gunnery. Shows a Company of Naval recruits marching at a "boot camp" graduation ceremony. Footage of Hampton Institute, U.S. Naval Training School for African-American Navy enlisted men in WWII . Shows sailors in classroom studies and onboard a training ship.
