Bastogne Defenders Honored

The 101st Airborne Division passes in review. General Eisenhower, General Taylor, and others in reviewing stand. Marlene Dietrich on an entertainment tour is in reviewing stand.

The 101st Airborne Division was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation. General Eisenhower fixes (attaches) the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC) to the Divisional Standard (Ensign).

Super Blockbuster Bomb - The Grand Slam

The Grand Slam earthquake bomb, nicknamed "Ten Ton Tess", was used to destroy a railway bridge over the Bielefeld Viaduct that connected Germany to the Ruhr. The 12,000 Lb. earthquake bomb, the "Tallboy", is compared to the 22,000 Lb. "Grand Slam" bomb. Shows RAF Lancaster bombers in flight to the Bielefeld Viaduct target. Shows explosions of 12,000 lb. Tallboy bombs dropped on the railway bridge over the Bielefeld Viaduct followed by the massive explosion of the Grand Slam bomb that demolished six spans of the railway bridge.

U.S. Troops Entertain Dutch Refugees

In England 500 young Dutch refugees arrive at an American Convalesce Center. For each youngster there was a soldier comrade and the visit started with lunch for the children. These children were refugees from the Netherlands. A young Dutch girl pins the Purple Heart Medal on a soldier wounded in her home town of Nijmegen Holland. Dutch children look at a B-29 Flying Fortress on display. At the end of the visit as the children boarded busses the soldiers gave each child a piece of candy.

Bridgehead Extended At Remagen

Shows the Ludendorff railroad bridge over the Rhine River at Remagen Germany, the only bridge captured intact by Allied Forces. In March 1945 the Remagen bridge, after being damaged by the retreating Germans, was by captured by the lead elements of the 27th Armored Infantry Division, Combat Command B, U.S. 9th Armored Division of the U.S. 1st Army during Operation Lumberjack. As U.S. Combat Engineers worked to stabilize the damaged bridge, American tanks, artillery and troops were pouring across in a slow steady stream to the east bank. The Ludendorff Bridge collapsed 10-days after it's capture. Scenes of the collapsed Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen Germany and the rescue of injured Combat Engineers that was on the bridge when it collapsed.

Shows tanks of the U.S. 1st Army advancing into Germany after crossing the Rhine River at Remagen. Shows tanks firing and advancing followed by 1st Army Infantry. Excellent footage of Infantry following a tank. CU of U.S. Infantry soldier firing M1 rifle. German soldiers surrendering by the hundreds. Bonn fell and Kaiserslautern. Shows short bitter fight as the U.S. troops entered Koblenz. After the tanks Infantry entered Koblenz in street by street fighting. Shows German soldiers with hands raised in surrender, Koblenz sign in left side of image. Shows more German prisoners of war captured with the fall of Koblenz.
