EBR-II Fuel Facility 1964 - Treating Spent Nuclear Fuel
A Department of Energy, Atomic Energy Commission, Argonne National Laboratory film demonstrates the feasibility of an on-site Fuel Conditioning Facility for reprocessing and treating spent fuel from the EBR-II ( Experimental Breeder Reactor II) and other nuclear reactors, using an electrorefiner for electrometallurgical treatment of spent fuel. Shows process of manufacturing metallic fuel elements.
Note: EBR-II (Experimental Breeder Reactor II)) was a prototype sodium-cooled fast reactor designed and operated by Argonne at the Argonne-West site in Idaho from 1964 to 1994. EBR-II was originally designed and operated to demonstrate a complete breeder reactor nuclear power plant with on-site reprocessing of the metallic fuel used by the reactor. Later, the facility mission was shifted to whole-plant test of atomic (nuclear) electric power generation. Throughout its thirty years of operation, EBR-II generated electricity and sold power to the local utility grid.
