Flash Fire Kills Three Apollo NASA Astronauts
Apollo astronauts Roger Chaffee, Edward White, and Gus Grissom are killed in a flash-fire aboard their grounded space capsule during a simulated count-down for the first flight for the Apollo program. Investigators theorize perhaps a short circuit or electrical overload sparked the blaze. The first Apollo flight was scheduled for February.
Bomb Explosions At Six Yugoslav Consulates In U.S. And Canada
Six Yugoslav Missions (Embassies) throughout the United States and Canada are damaged in a series of bomb blasts. In Washington there is heavy damage and a six-year old boy flung from bed. In New York the consulate general, off Fifth Avenue, rocked by a bomb rolled under a gate at a service entrance. One fireman dies of heart attack at scene.
Pope Paul VI Presides Over Ordination Of 16 New Priests
In the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, Pope Paul VI presides at the ordination of 16 new priests. It's only the second time in recent centuries for a pope to preside and ordain new priests. Usually Bishops confer the sacrament. The candidates are unique, all between the ages of 33 and 62.
Cryonics Deep Freezes Humans For Future Revival
The Cryonic Society of Phoenix, Arizona, believes that life after death is possible. The freezing of bodies immediately after death is their method. The corpses are stored in a special capsule. One man has already been frozen but most scientists are skeptical.
Airboats Are The Latest Weapons In The Vietnam War
One of the newest allied weapons in the delta (marshland) fighting in Vietnam is the "Aircat." an airboat which skims the surface of marshlands or open water at up to thirty-five miles an hour. Driven by a conventional airplane propeller, the boat carries a crew of six and operates on only four inches of water.
Shipboard Nuclear Power Plant Ready Aid Disaster Areas
The world's first floating nuclear power station debuts at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The "Sturgis" is a converted Liberty Ship that carries a nuclear power plant capable of producing ten million watts of electrical power, enough for a city of 20 thousand people. The ship-board nuclear power plant can be used both in military operations and disaster areas.
Worst Blizzard In 18 Years Hits Chicago
Chicago is battered by a snow storm that dumped two feet of snow across the mid-west. This 29-hour snow fall brought Chicago to a stand-still. Wicked weather in Chicago.
