NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1955 (UE55012)

MALENKOV RESIGNS – BULGANIN NEW RED PREMIER:
Close-ups of the leading figures in the Kremlin upheaval that took the rest of the world by surprise. Malenkov – who resigned as Premier, confessing “failure”; Nikolai Bulganin, ranking Commissar during the war – who takes his place; Nikita Krushchev, secretary of the Russia’s foremost soldier – new Minister of Defense. The cast of characters in mystery-shrouded drama believed to portend a new and tougher policy towards the West.

In Washington, President Eiseenhower comments on the events in Russia at a White House Press Conference.

TACHEN REFUGEES:
Sidelight on the Formosa crisis – widows and orphans on the Tachen Islands, filmed amid the rubble left behind Communist bombardment. These are the refugees whose evacuation has been called “American aggression” by Red China.

PRINCESS MARGARET IN TRINIDAD:
TRINDAD – Rain or shine, thousands turn out to cheer Princess Margaret Rose on her visit to the West Indian island. The weather turns from bright sunshine to torrential downpour, but spirits are undamped as the throngs hail the gracious envoy.

LAMB TRIPLETS BORN:
COTATI, CAL. – A rarity in the animal kingdom, sheep triplets. Mama has meal accommodations for only two, so the third little lamb is fed by bottle – a helping hand for Hildegarde, the proud mother.

SKI CHAMPS OF AUSTRIA:
Slaloms and ski-jumping provide winter sports thrills at the National Ski Championships of Austria. It’s the national sport, and competitors of both sexes put on a terrific show on rugged courses with a display of masterful control and flashing speed.

BOY SCOUTS HONOR PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Boy Scouts present President Eisenhower – honorary President of the youth organization, with a fishing rod and tackle box, on the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts.

DULLES AFFIRMS FORMOSA POLICY:
Quemoy awaits assault, lying in the shadow of the Red mainland, an easy target for Communist artillery. Every foot of the island’s terrain is dotted with heavy fortifications… first hurdle in the way of Red attack on Formosa. In Washington, D.c., Secretary of State Dulles delivers a major foreign policy address, reaffirming America’s determination to fight to defend Formosa, if need be.

MODES FOR MERE MALES:
PALM SPRINGS, CAL. – Men’s fashions with a California continental look. Cool, comfortable, and colorful are the watchwords. Masculine modes give the men something to preen themselves about.

BROTHERHOOD WEEK OPENS:
NEW YORK CITY – As Brotherhood Week opens, comedian Jackie Gleason makes a special appeal for all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or religion, to join in the nation-wide observances.

PIRATE GASPARILLA TAKES TAMPA:
TAMPA, FLA. – It’s carnival time, and the reincarnated pirate Gasparilla and his buccaneer crew invade the city. The annual festival also marks the city’s 100th birthday – a day of civic mirth and merriment.

WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW:
NEW YORK CITY – The royalty of dogdom on parade. An enormous array of canine champions, from tiny pugs to Great Danes, vie for honors at the Westminster Dog Show. King of them all is British-bred Ch. Kippax Fairnought, first bulldog to win the coveted award in 42 years.

CARNIVALS PRELUDE TO LENT SEASON:
FRANCE – All the fantasy and ingenuity of merry-making Southern France is displayed at the historic Nice pre-lenten carnival. Huge floats and masks dramatize 750 famous French proverbs, as throngs dance in the streets.

GERMANY – Highlighting the famous Coblentz “Carnival of Fools” is the public weighing of “Prince Henry.” His followers set up a giant scale and balance him off against 270 pounds of precious – hard candy!

HEART AWARD:
NEW YORK CITY – Actress Suzan Ball receives a special citation from the “heart of show business” organization, the Variety Club of New York, for her heroic come back from a crippling injury and leg amputation.

SWIMMING SAUCERS:
FLORIDA – The skin divers’ answer to the Flying Saucer – swimming saucers. They’re disc-shaped flippers that fit over the hands to give aqua-lungers the extra underwater zip needed to overtake elusive aquatic quarry.

QUEEN JULIANA AT SCHOOL REUNION:
HOLLAND – Queen Juliana joins with 1400 other women in a class reunion at the University of Leyden where the democratic ruler once studied, enjoying the traditional reminiscences of her student days.

WHITE WATER AND KAYAKS:
FRANCE – White water and kayaks, a combination always good for outdoor sports thrills, with white weather for an added fillip as French champions battle a turbulent river in a mid winter match of speed and skill.

SWIM STYLES UNDER THE SUN:
FLORIDA – Ballroom beauty is only one step from an ocean dip in new swim styles featuring ensemble matched skirts, several with a Toreador tinge – or would you call it a Spanish sizzle?

KIDS’ SKI MEET:
NEW HAMPSHIRE – Kid skiers hit the trail, but its no kid stuff. The junior jumpers have the skill and flashing assurance of old masters as they set a scorching pace down the icy mountain sloope.

IKE CALLS TAX CUT “IRRESPONSIBLE”:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a White House press conference, President Eisenhower denounces a proposed blanket tax reduction of $20 on personal income taxes as “fiscal irresponsibility.”

NEWS IN BRIEF:
NEW FRENCH PREMIER, Edgar Faure, heads the 21st government since the war, after a 19 day crisis in which the government was leaderless. It’s his second time in the crisis-ridden job.

INDO-CHINA REFUGEES are evacuated from Haiphong, last foothold of freedom in the Red occupied North, a strategic port soon to be turned over to the Reds under armistice terms.

FRENCH CHIC IN U.S. SWEATERS:
PARIS – Styles for the American sweater girl, 1955 model, as visualized by top couturier Givenchy. Paris’ loveliest mannequins model the new modes.

SPORTS

CHAMPION FIGURE SKATERS in world competition at Vienna. Pretty Tenley Albright and Hayes Jenkins of America take top honors with dazzling displays of grace and poetry in motion.

DIVING DARLINGS, three of them, show splendid form in try-outs for the coming Pan-American Games at Miami Beach. The winner, Juno Stover Irvin of Pasadena, mother of 3.

GOLDEN GLOVES FINALS in New York City. 10,000 ring fans jam the arena to see enthusiastic hopefuls fight it out to make their way to the National events – top-notch pugilism all the way.

GERMANY RATIFIES ARMS PACT:
In a story session of West Germany’s Bundestag, the long delayed Paris pacts on German rearmament and European defense are ratified, a major personal victory for Chancellor Adenauer.

“BIG MO” IN MOTHBALLS:
BREMERTON, WASH. – The twilight of a famous battlewagon’s historic career as the U.S.S. Missouri is formally decommissioned to join the mothball fleet.

SPANISH PRINCE:
SPAIN – Gen. Franco’s support of a return of the monarchy focuses attention on young Prince Don Juan Carlos, son of the pretender to the throne, and believed to be Franco’s choice.

MERCHANT MARINE GRADUATION:
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on parade. Fleet Admiral William “Bull” Halsey reviews the newly commissioned officers.

PRINCESS MARGARET IN NASSAU:
NASSAU – Last stop on Princess Margaret’s Caribbean tour, colorful Nassau won’t be outdone in the enthusiasm or warmth of its welcome for the royal visitor.

PRESIDENT ASK SUPPORT FOR RED CROSS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower launches the 1955 Red Cross campaign, and urges all America to support the cause generously.

SANTA ANITA HANDICAP:
ARCADIA, CAL. – 52,500 racing fans on hand for the Santa anita Handicap, one of the richest of races – and rich in thrills, too, see Poona the Second whip home by 2 ? lengths in an exciting finale.

DEATH ENDS STOCK CAR RACE:
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Speed thrills on the beach in Florida. Death takes a hand to end the race in tragedy when four cars pile up in a narrow backstretch.

OLYMPIC SKI TRIALS:
IRON MOUNTAIN, MICH. – A giant slide that calls for men of iron. Not all the hopefuls at Olympic tryouts make it – but six come through with flying colors in a spectacular ski show.

TEETH FOR SOUTHEAST ASIA PACT:
BANGKOK, SIAM – Secretary of States Dulles advocates a strong and mobile striking force to implement the Southeast Asia Treaty organization. He also assures them of U.S. help in the event of Red aggression.

JAPANESE ELECTIONS AND MANEUVERS:
JAPAN – Prime Minister Hoyayama’s Democratic party wins a decisive victory on a pledge of continued friendship with America and an attempt to seek trade ties with China and Russia. At sea the growing Japanese fleet of 41 ships makes an impressive showing.

HISTORIC PIER BURNS:
BOSTON – Boston’s worst pier fire in 20 years virtually destroys India Pier just 200 yards from the site of the famous Boston Tea Party.

BEN GURION RETURNS:
David Ben Gurion, former Prime Minister comes out of retirement to assume the post of Defense minister in the growing crisis along the Egyptian border.

SPRING TRAINING:
The world champion Giants swing into action at Phoenix, Arizona with the old maestro, Leo Durocher looking over his series heroes and a crop of new prospects. At St. Petersburg, Eddie Stanky looks over a beefed up pitching staff and full of confidence for 1955, in his Cards. The Indians at Tucson, Arizona lose no time in getting their back into their spring workouts.

FOOTLOOSE AND FACY FREE:
NEW YORK – Spring shoe styles for shipboard make their bow on the S.S. Nassau, in a nautical setting. Of course, they grace milady’s feet equally well ashore.

REDS OUST U.S. CLERIC:
Father George Bissonette, expelled from his post in Moscow without explanation, arrives in New York. His expulsion violates the treaty under which America recognized the USSR, but its motivation remains a mystery.

“WHIRL TOWER” TESTS CHUTES:
VAN NUYS, CAL. – A giant Whirl Tower, looking as if it was borrowed from a carnival midway, tests parachutes opened at ultra-high velocities.

4 MILLION DOLLAR GARAGE:
SAN FRANCISCO – A Golden Gate motorists dream come true, a futuristic four million dollar garage that parks 1,200 cars in its ramp surrounded 9 stories.

NATIONALIST COMMANDOS:
FORMOSE – With Red invasion imminent, Chinese Nationalist Commandos “hit the beaches” in battle simulating maneuvers, in a tense night operation.

AMATEUR ROCKETEERS:
NEW JERSEY – Amateur rocketeers test a rocket designed by a 16 year old engineer. Designed to reach 1 mile altitude, it fizzles – with a spectacular bang – but the young scientist plans to try again.

YANKEES IN SPRING CAMP:
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – Under the eagle eye of Manager Casey Stengel, the New York Yankees launch their ’55 campaign to regain the pennant. New talent and veteran stars unlimber their muscles after the long winter.

K OF C TRACK MEET:
NEW YORK – Sports highlights at the Knights of Columbus Track meet. Rev. Bob Richards sets a new meet record in his pole vaulting specialty, and Joe Gaffney scores a surprise victory over champion Mal Whitfield in Casey 600.

DODGERS TRAIN:
VERO BEACH, FLA. – “Wait till next year” they said in ’54, and the Brooks are out to avenge themselves on the Giants. Big Roy Campanella’s hand may be a key factor – he says it feels good – and the other Dodger stars face the future with confidence.

CAMELLIA FESTIVAL:
Sacramento celebrates its first annual Camellia Festival with a gala Children’s Parade featuring 5,000 happy youngsters in a gala procession, and the crowning of a Camellia Queen, Mary Ann Smithson.
