CONVERTIPLANE RISES LIKE ‘COPTER, FLIES LIKE PLANE:
TEXAS – Test flights of the “convertiplane” a radical new craft combining maneuverability of the helicopter with the forward speed of conventional aircraft. It’s powered by twin rotors which can be angled vertically for lift, or tilted directly forward while in flight for speed.

DAVID’S PARADE:
SAN FRANCISCO – The slightly fabulous story of 14 year old David Steward’s parade. Last year, David organized his own parade. This year’s sequel has everyone in his suburban hometown taking part, including the Mayor and the Army and Navy, blocking traffic for miles. David’s Parade!

HOTEL ON WHEELS:
AUSTRIA – A traveling hotel, for high living on the road. It’s a bus and trailer combination, that expands into sleeping and cooking accommodations for a dozen or more. All the comforts of home, anyplace there’s room to park.

NEW YORK CITY – Futuristic auto conceptions, right off the engineer’s drawing boards into reality. New “idea” cars, built to test new concepts of auto design and styling take to city streets, years ahead of their time.

PARIS – Styles for 1956, previewed in a lavish Parisian setting. And lavish is the word for the fabrics, full-draping blends of natural and synthetic fabrics, heightening to perfection the new lines of Paris’ top couturiers.

BULL FIGHT SCHOOL:
VENEZUELA – A school for matadors, where the novices first practice against a pair of horns wielded by fellow students, then enter the ring against equally young and inexperienced bulls. No casualties, but quite a few bumps and tossings – all in the day’s studies.

REDS FREE 2 G.I.’S AND MYSTERY MAN:
BERLIN – Russia frees 2 United States soldiers, held prisoners for 7 years and with them, a man who apparently tricked the Reds into thinking him an American and freeing him as well. Little more is known of his true story – another cold war enigma.

CHICAGO FIRE:
CHICAGO – A holocaust rages through the night, the city’s worst industrial fire in over 20 years, destroying a cracker factory and 3 other factory buildings. At least 30 are injured seriously, while damages are estimated at as much as 2 ? million dollars.

SKY-HIGH FASHIONS:
NEW YORK – High fashions go above the clouds for a showing of fall styles in a dramatic setting atop the Gotham skyline. A breath-taking look at the big town and some dazzling new creations.

MOBS CHEER PERON:
ARGENTINA – 100,000 pack into Buenos Aires’ Plaza del Mayo to demand that President Peron stay in office following his sudden resignation, a striking demonstration of his continuing power among the nation’s working masses.

BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO:
HOLLAND – A bicycle built for two – but there’s something new. It’s a side-by-side job, instead of Grandpa’s old tandem model. All the advantages of the sentimental old favorite, plus modern design.

DIRT TRACK RACES:
GERMANY – European motorcycle daredevils compete in the international dirt track championships in Berlin. Handlebar jockeys set a heated pace, reaching 75 mph speeds on their light-weight racing models.

NEW JET ARMADA:
ENGLAND – At the annual Farnborough Air Show, England unveils a new jet armada, the latest aircraft developments in heavy transports and bombers, as well as fighters and anti-sub craft. A daring demonstration of the ejection seat from runaway level, with a live subject coming safely to earth proves the most amazing feature of all.

“SAFETY” ON WHEELS:
INDIANA – Safety takes the spotlight at the State Fair as the State Police unveil two new mobile safety exhibits, that will tour the state with their educational message.

RETURN OF PAUL BUNYAN:
FT. BRAGG, CAL. – The legendary king of the lumberjacks returns to oversee this year’s championship competition in hand-chopping, axe-throwing, pole climbing, and other woodsmen’s feats.

ADENAUER IN MOSCOW:
Germany’s Chancellor Adenauer visits Moscow at Russia’s invitation for talks on German reunification and allied topics. Little progress is made as Red demands for German neutrality, and German inquiries after 200,000 POW’s still held by Russia prove stumbling blocks.

NATO WAR GAMES:
ITALY – Full scale war games across northern Italy test NATO’s combat readiness. Ground and air units take part in the mammoth exercise.

IKE MEETS GOP LEADERS:
DENVER – President Eisenhower breakfasts with 48 Republican State Chairmen. Campaign tactics for ’56 are on everyone’s minds, but the big question goes unasked and unanswered: Will Ike run?

BEAUTY PARADE:
MISS AMERICA 1956 is chosen in Atlantic City, N.J. She’s lovely Sharon Kay Ritchie of Denver, Colorado.

NATIONAL COLLEGE QUEEN is picked in Asbury Park, N.J., from beauties representing 35 campuses. Beautiful, brainy Kathryn Rodgers of Mississippi wears the crown.

ROYAL LAUGHTER AT LAUNCHING:
HOLLAND – The camera catches a rare transition from royal dignity to regal mirth as Holland’s Crown Princess Beatrix launches a new sub, and unexpectedly sees assembled guests doused with champagne.

SPORTS
LAKE ONTARIO SWIM – 29 distance swimmers take to the icy waters of Lake Ontario, for a $25,000 purse. Only two master the 57-degree water, the winner Cliff Lumsden, 32 miles in 20 hours.

NATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP sees America’s Tony Trabert facing Aussie Ken Rosewall in a “re-match” of the Davis Cup play. Trabert recoups America’s prestige and his own blazing to victory in straight sets.

SCHOOL FOR SURVIVAL:
NEVADA – Air Force volunteers are trained to survive as prisoners of war, in a unique school where they are subjected to typical Communist “brainwashing” tactics, on a limited scale that gives them a lesson in what to expect, and how to endure, if captured.

AIR BASE RIOT:
JAPAN – 3,000 demonstrate in protest against plans to expand a U.S. airbase in Japan. Police break up the mob when surveyors are menaced, and a day of clashes ensues, in which 74 are injured.

A DAY WITH ROYAL FAMILY:
ENGLAND – Informal pictures of Britain’s Royal Family on vacation, at Balmoral Castle. Queen Elizabeth and Duke Philip relax with young Prince Charles and Princess Anne and the family pets. Unusual close-ups of a distinguished family at play.

WILL ROGERS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL DRIVE OPENS:
SARANAC, N.Y. – Variety Club members from all over the country come to the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital, to begin the annual Christmas Salute to the entertainment industry’s famed tuberculosis research center and sanitarium.

PAGEANT OF FORMAL WEAR:
PHILADELPHIA – Pageant of men’s formal wear, from cave man times right up to the present, and the modern, more colorful style trends in men’s dress wear, as contrasted with the garb of the Gay ‘90’s and Roaring ‘20’s.

INTERNATIONAL TUNA TOURNEY:
NOVA SCOTIA – Deep-sea fishing thrills in the renowned tuna fishing waters off Wedgeport, as top sportsmen gather for the 12th International Cup Meet. A nip and tuck battle with a 585-pound giant spells victory for the American team, on the final day of the tourney.

PERON OUSTED:
ARGENTINA – Army units join a new rebellion spearheaded by Navy and Air Force units that forces the resignation of dictator Juan Peron, after months of seething unrest brought about by economic upheaval and persecution of the church. A turbulent end to the strong man’s 10 year regime.

REDS FREE U.S. CIVILIANS:
HONG KONG – Three Americans and a German national cross the Bamboo Curtain to freedom, released by Red China after imprisonment and brain washing. One claims he was a U.S. spy, and parrots Red germ warfare charges. Others show the results of long privation.

ISLAND WITHOUT BOYS:
HOLLAND – The quaint story of a picturesque Dutch island where there isn’t a little boy to be seen. Boys and girls alike wear long ringleted hair, and skirts, until the age of 8. Then, a haircut for the boys and they take their place in male society.

BARBARA ANN SCOTT WEDS:
CANADA – Friends, well-wishers and fans crowd outside the church as Barbara Ann Scott, Canadian skating queen, weds Chicago publicist Tommy King in a picturesque ceremony.

GEORGIA TECH WINS GRID OPENER:
ATLANTA – Miami University faces Georgia Tech as football takes the sports limelight. Favored Miami is shaken when Tech rambles to an early lead and goes on to a thrilling, 14-6 upset victory.

RODEO THRILLS AT PENDLETON ROUND UP:
PENDLETON, ORE. – The Pendleton Round Up, in its biggest and best show since its 1910 founding, presents hundreds of Indians in full tribal regalia, and three days of rodeo thrills with the West’s top riders and cowhands, pitted against the orneriest broncs and Brahmas ever.

UN ASSEMBLY OPENS, ELECTS NEW HEAD:
NEW YORK – The United Nations opens its 10th General Assembly in an atmosphere of relaxation, which sees a smiling Molotov defeated on a motion to admit the Red Chinese regime. For the first time in U.N. history, a president of the General Assembly, Jose Maza of Chile, is elected by a unanimous vote, a symptom of the general mood of hope.

THE WAKE OF HURRICANE IONE:
NORTH CAROLINA – Hurricane Iona, most violent of the season, left a trail of death and desolation on the coast of North Carolina, concentrating her fury on a relatively small area to wreak damage amounting to millions, destroying hundreds of homes, killing at least 6 in two days of terror.

MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE FESTIVAL:
SACRAMENTO, CAL.- California’s history of the mission days is re-enacted in celebration of Mexico’s 145th anniversary of independence. A gala parade through the State Capital highlights the occasion.

LAND AND AIR WAR MEMORIALS:
HOLLAND – Solemn ceremonies honor those who died in the Battle of Arohem. Dutch school-children lay wreath at the graves of the Allied paratroops who died in the attempt to force a beach-head on the Rhine, one of the great military disasters of World War Two.

ENGLAND – Seven new stained glass windows are dedicated at the RAF Chapel, one for each of the outstanding squadrons that fought the Battle of Britain. A victory that affected the course of history is commemorated, as is the memory of the valiant band of airmen.

BERLIN POLICE SHOW:
BERLIN – Olympic Stadium is filled to capacity as the Berlin Police parade, on foot, on horseback, and on motorcycles. The canine corps is one of the hits of the show, a non-political holiday festival that draws the crowds cheers.

56 MILE DASH ON WATER SKIS:
CALIFORNIA – A grueling, thrilling race from Long Beach to Catalina Island and back, with a field of 68 water-ski champs, Rough water and a torrid pace eliminates many, as the winner goes on to set a record of 1 hour and 42 minutes – 16 year old Chuck Stearns.

PRESIDENT STRICKEN!
DENVER – On vacation, President Eisenhower is stricken with a “mild” coronary thrombosis. Messages of sympathy pour in form all over, the world, including Moscow, as the President lies in an oxygen tent his recovery proceeding “satisfactorily,” according to doctors. Vice-president Nixon and Administration leaders make plans to keep the government functioning during the enforced inactivity of the Chief Executive, as the entire nation awaits developments and ponders the future.

NEW ARGENTINE REGIME:
BUENOS AIRES – Argentina’s revolt ends with President Juan Peron in exile. As mobs sack Peronist headquarters, Colonel Eduardo Lonardi, leader of the revolt is sworn in as provisional head of the government until national elections can be held.

600-HOUSE TOWN MOVED:
ONTARIO – Moving day for an entire town. The world’s largest machinery begins moving the houses of Iriquois, Ont., out of the path planned for the St. Lawrence Seaway. In the houses, life goes on as usual, the huge-scale job goes off so smoothly.

3-DAY OLD BABY KIDNAPPED:
SAN FRANCISCO – A shocking crime brings grief to a family and stirs a city. One of the largest police dragnets searches for clues in the kidnapping of the new born son of Dr. Sanford Marcus from a hospital nursery, as the mother is prostrated by shock.

FOOTBALL

MARYLAND-U.C.L.A. – At College Park, Maryland, two top-rated teams open the season with a titanic grip clash. The Terps’ defense is solid, and their offense, directed by Frank Tamburello goes all the way for a touchdown as Maryland downs the UCLA Bruins, 7-0.

NOTRE DAME-S.M.U. – At South Bend, a new star blazes for the Irish. Paul Hornung steps into Ralph Guglielmi’s shoes, and fills them handsomely, scoring Notre Dame’s first TD and booting a 38-yard field goal, starring all the way as Notre Dame wins, 17-0.

BIGGEST CIVIL DEFENSE TEST:
PORTLAND, ORE. – A northwestern metropolis holds the biggest civil defense test ever staged in this country. Within minutes after the alert is sounded, the streets are cleared of traffic, and the populace safely in shelter. 1,000 square blocks are evacuated, a massive task executed.

BIG THREE MEET:
NEW YORK CITY – Secretary of State Dulles, British Foreign Minister Harold MacMillen, and French Foreign Minister Antoine Piney discuss Western strategy for their forthcoming Geneva meeting with Foreign Minister Molotov.

BELGIAN PRINCE ARRIVES:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Full military honors greet Belgium’s young Prince Albert, brother of King Baudoin, as he arrives in the nation’s capital on a nation-wide tour of military, industrial and educational points of the U.S.

DUTCH PARLIAMENT OPENS:
HOLLAND – A unique and historic blend of regal pomp and simple democratic dignity, as Queen Juliana officially opens Holland’s governing body. Princess Beatrix and Princess Irene are interested spectators as their mother, a nation’s beloved Queen, is cheered to the echo.

WORLD SERIES!
NEW YORK CITY – It’s New York’s twelfth subway series, as the Yankees and Dodgers meet for the World’s Championship of baseball. Brooklyn, in quest of its first series victory, opens with big Don Newcombe in the first game, opposed by Whitey Ford of the Yanks, It’s and action-filled, 17 hit slug fest, with homers by Furillo, snider, Howard, and Collins, and the first game goes to New York 6-5.
