MISS CINEMA CHOSEN:
FRANCE – The prettiest daughters of La Belle France compete for the title of Miss Cinema and the right to represent France in this year’s Miss Universe contest.

BIGGEST SOLAR ECLIPSE:
CEYLON – International scientific teams join forces to study the longest solar eclipse in 1,200 years. It blots out the sun across a 7,000 mile area.

JAYCEE PARADE:
ATLANTA – Big doings on Peachtree St., as the Jaycees highlight the Junior Chamber of Commerce convention with a mammoth, splendiferous parade.

MARBLE CHAMPS knuckle down in the finals for the national crown at Asbury Park, N.J. 10-year old Dick Hickman, brother of last year’s champ, is edged out by 12-year old Raymond Jones of Pittsburgh in a tense climax.

SKI-ATHON, with the skyline of New York for a spectacular back-drop. 12 daredevil water-ski teams race from New York to Atlantic City, 110 miles in a unique new sports event.

IKE SEES BETTER RED RELATIONS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower expresses guarded hope for better relations with Russia, on the basis of developments at the United Nations’ 10th anniversary meeting, but warns against over-optimism in connection with the coming big 4 meeting.

NEHRU IN AUSTRIA:
VIENNA – India’s Prime Minister Nehru arrives in the course of his swing around European capitals, following his trip to Moscow. Chancellor Raab welcomes the Asian statesman in the name of the newly liberated nation.

CLASSIC TREASURE TROVE:
ITALY – Archaeologists uncover a treasure trove of classic art from the Golden Age of pre-Christian Rome. Originally found accidentally by an American G.I., the trove contains many priceless pieces of art.

AIR SHOW FOR JORDAN KING:
ENGLAND – Britain’s Royal Air Force puts on a show for King Hussein of Jordan, featuring the newest jet fighters in supersonic maneuvers. A flight in a jet trainer is a thrilling climax for the young Arab monarch.

SUMMER HAIR STYLES:
PARIS – Coiffures for mademoiselle or madame, to suit the summer. Chic, light, and easy to manage are the criteria. Emphasis is put on the silhouette with flattering hair line framing the face. Voila-simplicity.

ELIZABETH IN NORWAY:
NORWAY – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth makes her first visit to a foreign country since ascending the throne. With King Haakon as her host, she sees a folk dance ceremony of welcome staged by Oslo’s children.

SPEEDBOAT RACES:
FOND DU LAC, WISC. – Speed is the order of the day, as 200 top drivers get away in their D-boats for an 88 mile contest, fighting time, each other, and choppy waters. A scorching pace and a thrilling race.

TRICK GOLF WIZARDRY:
NEW YORK CITY – Golf wizard Paul Hahn displays a few choice items from his bag of tricks at Yankee Stadium – driving out a home run from a home plate tee, and a few other stunts that must be seen to be believed.

RETURN FROM RED BONDAGE:
AUSTIA – Moving scenes of reunion, and of hopes shattered, as 190 arrive home after years in Red slave camps. Men, women and children seized by the Reds without cause or warning return with grim tales of those they left behind, including Americans in Soviet bondage.

MIGHTY BLAST CLEARS QUARRY:
ITALY – A titanic blast opens a quarry for use, shattering a compact mass of 100,000 tons of rock that has made the subterranean caverns a deadly labyrinth of death, defying all similar efforts since 1931.

RAINWEAR FASHIONS:
NEW YORK CITY – New style and high style in raincoats – ranging from a chic white gabardine with print border to a Paris original in white kid with mink collar. Let it pour – the gals will look better than ever.

JOSE FERRER HONORED:
NEW YORK CITY – Jose Ferrer, star and director of U-I’s recent release “The Shrike,” receives a scroll lauding his outstanding work in the picture from Mrs. Dean Gray Edwards, motion picture chairman of the National Council of Women of the United States.

BULL FIGHTS MAN – AND WINS:
SPAIN – One of the biggest bull-fights of the season, and a trigger-tempered Toro disregards the matador’s finesse to take over, toppling matador, picadors, and a horse for an upset victory of a sort.

WORLD’S LARGEST GLOBE:
MASS. – The world’s largest globe, 28 feet in diameter, is unveiled. Built at a $200,000 cost, it shows the world as it would look to an observer 5,000 miles out in space. The globe is intended to help business students visualize the problems of global economic planning.

AUTO RODEO:
FRANCE – An American auto rodeo visits Paris, famed for its hair-raising traffic, and shows what a professional team of motor maniacs can do. Leaping cars, crashing cars, burning cars – the Rue de la Paix was never like this. Sacre Bleu!

NEW ITALIAN PREMIER FORMS GOVERNMENT:
Antonio Segni, newly appointed Prime Minister of Italy, announces the formation of his cabinet to the Rome press corps. Pledged to the continuance of cooperation with the West and NATO powers, the new Premier is a leader in Italy’s land reform program.

KOREA MARKS INVASION ANNIVERSARY:
KOREA – 30,000 South Korean students take part in observances of the 5th anniversary of the Red invasion that launched the Korean War.

CIRCUS TIME AT THE HOSPITAL:
HOLLAND – A bright day in the dull hospital routine of 2,000 patients, kids and adults, as the circus pays a visit, with elephants and clowns and all the color needed to lift a curtain of gloom.

BIG BEN’S VOICE STILLED:
LONDON – The majestic voice of Big Ben is stilled, as an 18 month overhaul job on the historic clock and bell begins, long needed by the century-old London landmark.

MISS CANADA CHOSEN:
CANADA – Canada’s fairest vie for the title of Miss Canada and the right to represent the nation in the Miss Universe contest. The winner – lovely Miss Dalyce Smith, of the Yukon.

TRABERT TAKES WIMBLEDON FINALS:
WIMBLEDON – Tony Trabert wins the men’s finals in the Wimbledon tennis classic, defeating Kurt Nielsen of Denmark in straight sets.

MEDIEVAL PAGEANTRY AT SIENNA:
ITALY – The splendor and pageantry of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance lives again at the historic Sienna festival, culminating in a daredevil bareback race through the town.

TIMBER CARNIVAL:
ALBANY, ORE. – Axe-throwing, timber-topping, and log-bucking, with a dip in an icy pool for the lose, highlight a thrilling timber carnival.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower, addressing foreign students in the United States voices his hopes for a tranquil future in their lifetime, as he outlines his principles for the Geneva conference.

INDO CHINA MOP UP:
INDO-CHINA – Diem’s Nationalist troops trap and clean up the last resistance of the Hoa-Hoa sect not far from Saigon. Thousands of prisoners and weapons are taken after a short and spirited battle.

A BAER OF A REFEREE:
SACRAMENTO, CAL. – Max Baer, former heavyweight champ, finds himself in a tough spot as he calls a queer one in a little leaguer team game. But size wins out and the little leaguer gets the heave-ho.

FIRST AID ACADEMY CLASS:
DENVER, COLO. – Three hundred and six cadets of the first Airforce Academy at Lowry Field are sworn in as members of West Point and Annapolis parade in their honor.

AID FOR PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A veritable who’s who in the sports world meets with President Eisenhower to offer their assistance in combating juvenile delinquency by providing sports outlets for youthful energies.

SCALING THE PEAK:
MONT BLANC – The towering heights of Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest peak are now accessible by a new cable car which travels over scenes of breath taking mountain wonder.

NL WINS ALL STAR GAME:
MILWAUKEE, WIS. – In a heart stopper, the favored National Leaguers come from behind to win a twelve inning game when Stan Musial clouts a homer to break the tie.

Leaders of the Big 4 Nations – Eisenhower, Eden, Faure, and Bulganin arrive at Geneva together with their top policy advisers to begin the “meeting at the summit” that the world hopes will turn the course of future events towards peace.

22 DIE IN PLANE CRASH:
CHICAGO – Disaster and sudden death when a heavily loaded transport making a low instrument landing hits a neon sign, only a few hundred yards from the runway. 22 die, and not a survivor escapes unscathed.

RUSSIAN FARMERS IN U.S.:
DES MOINES, IA. – 12 Russian farm experts arrive for a six-week study tour of America’s corn and hog belt. An equal number of Americans are guests of Russia, in an exchange of knowledge and good will that transcends political barriers.

MISS UNIVERSE CONTEST:
LONG BEACH, CAL. – The cream of world pulchritude, beauties chosen from 50,000 preliminary contests in 40 countries, on parade as the “Miss Universe” competition begins. The winner of the world’s most coveted beauty crown will earn fame, riches, and a possible motion picture career.

HOLLYWOOD GOLD CUP:
HOLLYWOOD PARK, CAL. – Rejected belies his name, with a pulse-tingling drive in the stretch of the Hollywood Gold Cup turf classic, nosing out the favored Alidon for a sensational victory, to bring home a $137,000 purse.

AQUAFOLLIES:
MINNEAPOLIS – Top divers grace the boards at the Aquafollies. Champions Bruce Harlan, Charles Diehl and others in a stirring display of poise and precision, followed by a change of mood to some hilarious hi-jinks off the high board.

MASS GROUND-BREAKING FOR FIRE ISLAND BRIDGE:
NEW YORK – Thousands take part in mass ground-breaking ceremonies for the projected Fire Island bridge at Shirley, Long Island. The new span will be the key to a vast new recreational development in the area.

IKE CHALLENGES REDS – OFFERS ARMS DATA EXCHANGE:
GENEVA – In a dramatic effort to break the deadlock on Germany reunification and European security at the Big Four conference, the President offers Russia a complete blueprint of the U.S. military establishment, with permission to make authenticating aerial photographs, if Russia reciprocates.

MOROCCAN REVOLT FLARES:
MOROCCO – Another bloody colonial crisis confronts France in North Africa. In 3 days of uncontrolled rioting by Arab nationalists, at least 80 are killed, and whole sections of the city looted and burned.

RUSSIAN FARMERS IN IOWA:
IOWA – Russian agricultural experts touring the mid-West to study corn and hog farming visit a typical American farm. Afterwards they visit a local diary bar for an ice cream break, attracting curious crowds.

REDS SHOW AIR PROGRESS:
RUSSIA – The Red Air Force displays its newest combat aircraft, including a multi-jet intercontinental bomber rated as good as good as America’s best by observers, as well as giant new combat helicopter in spectacular airborne troop maneuvers.

SPORTS

FOLDING OF THE BULLS:
SPAIN – Bulls throw men, in a unique and venerable sports festival in Pamplona, where the hulls are raised for the country’s bull fights. They’re driven through the streets to the arena, and a riotous scramble results as amateur bull fighters try their skill with El Toro.

TOUR DE FRANCE:
FRANCE – Europe’s classic 9 day cross country bicycle marathon reaches a thrilling climax as the riders face the greatest challenge, the lofty ranges of the Maritime Alps. The last barrier between Paris and their goal of Monaco produces thrilling competition in a stirring setting.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – 5,000 cheer President Eisenhower as he arrives at National Airport from Geneva. Before delivering his report to Congress and the nation, Ike sums up the results of the 6 days of momentous deliberation informally, with an expression of optimism for the future.

AMERICA’S FIRST TURBO-PROP:
MARIETTA, GA. – America’s first turbo-prop transport plane makes its maiden flight. A 30-ton giant with awesome power and payload, it’s well-named the “Hercules.” It’s slated to become an Air Force workhorse.

TOY FAIR:
NEW YORK CITY – A wonderland of toys, to banish hot weather blues and delight the youngsters’ hearts. The show includes a back-yard railroad and a sensational stunting toy plane, just the thing for Xmas.

1st DIVISION COMES HOME:
NEW YORK CITY – A rousing welcome for the 1st Division, coming home after 13 years hot and cold war service overseas. Docks are jammed with relatives and loved ones, despite broiling heat.

SWEDISH BEAUTY CROWNED “MISS UNIVERS”:
LONG BEACH, CAL. – Months of suspense end as Miss Universe is chosen from a galaxy of beauties representing 32 nations. She’s Sweden’s Hillevi Rombin, winner, with the beauty crown, of a regal array of prizes including a U-I movie contract.

UPSET IN SUNSET HANDICAP:
HOLLYWOOD PARK, CAL. – Alidon and Rejected, one two in last week’s Gold Cup are upset by Social Outcast, flown in for rich turf event. Midway in the stretch, Social Outcast puts on a terrific drive to leave the field behind and set a new track record.

WATER SKI SCHOOL:
WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. – School days, summertime style. Youngsters learn how to water-ski in one session. That’s what the instructor promised, and durned if they don’t do it – after several dunkings that are only too welcome in the scorching heat.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the first White House press conference since his return from Geneva, the President sums up the results of the summit conference, and breaks a personal news item – he’ll be a grandfather for the 4th time late this year, in time for Christmas.

WELDED RAILS:
CONNECTICUT – Welded rails, to take the “clickety-clack” out of rail-roading are installed on an Eastern line for the first time. Quarter mile length of tracks are laid along an 80 mile stretch.

FASHIONS FOR SUN, SAND, AND SURF:
OREGON – The beach at Boiler Bay is a scenic setting for new beach fashions, designed for fun in the sun. Modern mermaids in sleek, shapely, shoreline styles, a story of beauty and the beach.

700,000 AT EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS:
RIO DE JANEIRO – 700,000 Catholics from all over the world join in the 36th Eucharistic Congress. 22 Princes of the Church and 300 Bishops and Archbishops represent the hierarchy at the Western Hemisphere’s biggest religious gathering.

“ATOMS FOR PEACE” STAMP:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new postage stamp commemorating the theme of “Atoms for Peace” is first shown at White House ceremonies attended by President Eisenhower, his Cabinet, leaders of Congress, and the international diplomatic corps.

MOTION PICTURE POLL:
BEVERLY HILLS, CAL. – Motion picture exhibitors make nominations for a screen poll in which America’s movie audiences will have the final say. Film stars and executives gather to hear nominations for most promising new screen personalities, top pictures, and best performances.

KAYAK RACE:
BAVARIA – Kayak commodores dare the white water of the turbulent Ammer River. Spills and upsets are hazards of the sport, and sort of welcome. The water’s cold and the weather’s hot, and the race is fast and exciting.
