DUTCH STORM – Resort holidays go glimmering for storm-tossed Dutch as sudden storm lashes the coast, smashing beach cottages.
BIG ORDER – British test first of 64 Vickers Viscount turbo-prop transport planes, ordered by Capital Airlines.

NATIONAL SPELLING CHAMPION:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sandra Gloss of Granite City, Mo., is the new national champ, emerging winner when Jean Copeland of Phoenix misspells a word. Joy and grief keep the audience “spellbound.”

EAST-WEST STYLE SHOW:
SAN FRANCISCO – The exotic and flowerlike beauty of Japanese costumes makes it fashion bow in a style showing entitled “Japanese Fantasy” – a spectacle blending the lushness of the Orient with the chic of the east.

THE COLISEUM RELAYS:
LOS ANGELES – Thrills pack the famed coast track jamboree, with spills and sudden disqualifications marring the action-packed Relays. Featured are the Half Mile, the Quarter Mile, and the Hundred Yard Dash. Speed and stamina, and heart-break at the tape!

JET TANKS IN MANEUVERS:
FORT KNOX, KY. – Power For Peace is the theme of joint maneuvers of jet planes and tanks. The spectacular exercises stress mobility and quick striking power of the team. A liaison officer directs the planes to the attack.

CONSERVATIVES WIN:
ENGLAND – Sir. Anthony Eden, Churchill’s successor, wins his first big election test, when the Conservatives are returned to power by a wide margin. Clement Atlee headed the Labor Party ticket which goes down to defeat.

WAR ACE IS HONORED:
POPLAR, WISC. – Major Richard Bong, war ace who shot down 40 enemy planes only to lose his life in test plane crash, is memorialized with new school and replica of plane he flew to victory.

FIRST LADIES IN STYLE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Smithsonian Institute unveils a “First Ladies Hall,” a collection of clothes worn by White House hostesses down through the years. A fashionable footnote to history.

FIRE FIGHTING SHOW:
CENTEREACH, L.I. – An exhibition of fire fighting methods has an unscheduled climax when several volunteers suffer burns during the show. In protective suits they walk through the flames.

TWIN CONGRESS IN HOLLAND:
HOLLAND –You’ll be seeing double for sure at this convention; 300 sets of twins from all over Europe gather to exchange notes and compete for prizes. A two-for-one chuckle.

LONG-SHOT WINS DERBY:
EPSOM ENGLAND – “Phil Drake,” a French invader, wins the 176th running of the Epsom Derby, with a last minute burst of speed. Dramatic finish of a great classic, with royalty and commoner rubbing elbows at the famed track.

SEVENTH FLEET ON GUARD:
OFF FORMOSA – Supplied and ready for action, the men and ships and planes of our Seventh Fleet stand guard in the straits between Formosa and Red China. Planes take off from the carrier Essex for daily patrols and practice.

BUILDING OF STAINLESS STEEL:
NEW YORK – Something new and glistening is added to the skyline, a 42-story skyscraper faced with gleaming panels of stainless steel, truly a building of the future.

FILM STAR CHRISTENS PLANE:
SANTA MONICA – Lovely Mamie Van Doren, star of U-I’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’” receives the official accolade of “Miss Sabena” as she christens a DC-6 transport plane for the Belgian Airlines.

GARDEN PARTY FOR VETERANS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House lawn is the scene of the yearly party given by the President and First Lady for hospitalized veterans, who enjoy the eats and the hospitality.

DARK GLASSES A LA MODE:
PARIS – Men in the park look at lasses who wear dark glasses, during a different kind of style show. Fancy shapes and some bejeweled, these are the last word in dark glasses.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS:
MOTORCYCLES – The Oakland Motorcycle Drill Team, winners of national title, show why they are the flashiest and fastest outfit ever to zoom through intricate maneuvers on wheels.

LACROSSE – The Indians originated it, now two teams from the Universities of Maryland and Johns Hopkins, play it before thrilled fans. A slashing, action-packed sport to delight modern day Americans. Byrd Stadium at College Park, Md., is setting for thriller.

HOMECOMING FOR RED PRISONERS:
HAWAII – 4 American fliers enroute home from Red China prisons are reunited with their families at Honolulu Airport. Tears and laughter mingle in the joy of reunion, moving scenes recorded by the sound camera.

AUSTRIA – 250 Austrian prisoners of war and civilian internees are greeted by loved ones as they return from ten years or more in Russia prison camps. On hand too are many seeking news of sons and husbands still missing behind the barbed wire of Red stockades.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
THE PRESIDENT FLIES in a light plane for the first time in history. A new twin-motored plane whisks Ike from the White House to his Gettysburg, Pa., farm, where he inspects gifts of prize livestock.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER AWARD is presented to philanthropist Joseph Lederer, in ceremonies in New York. Vice President Nixon bestows the gold medal for contributions to race relations.

GOOD WILL VISIT by M. Jacques Flaud, Director General of the French Bureau of Motion Pictures, arriving in New York for a 2 week visit to meet industry leaders and discuss film distribution in France.

BLUEBLOODS OF DOGDOM in the top outdoor canine championship competition, the Morris & Essex Dog Show. Magnificent specimens of every breed contend. The winner, a boxer, Baroque of Quality Hill.

GRADUATION AT SERVICE ACADEMIES:
ANNAPOLIS – The corps of Midshipmen passes in review at commencement exercises for the Naval Academy’s class of ’55. 4 years of hard work ends in an aura of triumph and traditional exultation.

WEST POINT – President Eisenhower reviews the Cadet Corps, in their customary display of superlative precision marching at Commencement. Afterwards, the President meets old classmates at reunion time.

PRESIDENT’S WEST POINT ADDRESS:
At West Point Commencement Exercises, President Eisenhower reviews the Corps of Cadets. Later, he confers diplomas on the graduates, pausing to whisper a confidential word to the last man in the class. In his graduation address, he warns against miraculous solutions to world problems.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
ARAB NATIONALIST LEADER Habib Bourgiba returns to Tunis in triumph, after negotiating an agreement with France granting the unruly North African land almost complete autonomy. He gets a hero’s welcome from an enthusiastic throng.

LAMP OF FREEDOM is presented to the President by the United Jewish Appeal, on the tenth anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camp victims. The gift, a 2,000 year old lamp excavated in Israel, honors the President’s humanitarian achievements.

FLYING BOAT CRASHES in England, while landing just offshore. Frogmen found 4 of the RAF crew trapped in the sunken hull. 10 others aboard managed to scramble clear of the crash, which occurred within sight of the holiday resort.

HISTORIC FLAG EXHIBIT is opened in New York by Vice President Nixon. On display are flags from every era’s history, ranging from the colorful banners of the Revolutionary Era to the battle-torn Iwo Jima flag. The theme, bringing “New Glory to Old Glory.”

GUARDSMEN’S RODEO:
SAN FRANCISCO – 150 businessmen go Wild West for a day, with a wild and wooly rodeo to aid crippled and underprivileged kids, Top rodeo stars lend their services, for an all around thrilling event.

MAYOR WAGNER IN LONDON:
Full dress honors greet New York’s Mayor and Mrs. Wagner as they arrive in London, first stop on their international itinerary. The Lord Mayor of London and other civic dignitaries are on hand to extend a warm welcome.

TRUE VOW KEEPERS:
KANSAS CITY, MO. – True Vow Keepers, the organization of couples wed fifty years or more, get together. Oldest couple the Hogans, married 71 years.

ADENAUER STRESSES GERMAN TIES WITH WEST:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – West German Chancellor Adenauer arrives in Washington for top-level talks with President Eisenhower and national policy-makers, preparatory to his coming visit to Moscow, to discuss new diplomatic and trade relations between free Germany and Russia. He affirms the strength of his nation’s ties with the free Western World.

IKE GETS DEGREE:
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – President Milton Eisenhower of Penn State confers an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws’ on President Dwight D. Eisenhower of the U.S., a distinguished “recent alumnus.”

YAKIMA INDIANS’ CENTENNIAL:
WASHINGTON – Open house on the Yakima Indians’ reservation, marking the 100th anniversary of the signing of the tribe’s peace treaty with the white man. An impressive monument is unveiled commemorating the event, which helped open the great Northwest to progress.

RADAR TRAFFIC LIGHTS:
MAYWOOD, ILL. – Radar on the highways in a new form, automatically controlling traffic lights to clear a lane for police cars, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Scientific wizardry spells new road safety.

SWAPS SWEEPS CALIFORNIAN:
CAL. – A turf thriller that brings back memories of the Derby, as Swaps and the ’54 winner, Determine, stage a thrilling speed battle in the home stretch. Swaps sets a new record for the mile and a sixteenth at Hollywood Park with a true championship performance.

WOMEN’S AUTO CLASS:
NEW YORK – Classes in car care for the ladies are launched as part of a nation-wide program. The gals put aside glamour for gaskets, rolling up their cashmere sleeves to grab crescent wrenches and attack the problem.

ELKS RODEO:
SANTA MARIA, CAL. – 2 days of rip-snorting action. Man throws bull and bull throws man, bull-dodging and riding the ornery Brahmas. Rough action and plenty a tumble on the tanbark in an exciting show.

PORTLAND ROSE PARADE:
PORTLAND, ORE. – Ex-President Harry S. Truman shares honors with the Rose Festival Queen as Portland stages its biggest and most colorful Rose Parade – an eye-filling 2 ? hours floral pageant.

FLYING LADY FARMER:
HOLLAND – Talk about the Flying Dutchman. Here’s a Dutch lady farmer moving to Canada, who charters 2 big sky freighters to carry her farm goods to the New World – everything from tractor and fence wire to her 22 Afghan Hounds.

ARGENTINE REVOLT:
Revolt against the Peron dictatorship breaks out – sparked by the expulsion of the leading members of the Catholic hierarchy, and the excommunication of Peron. Army units loyal to the regime attack Catholics in the streets, while Air Force and Navy units assault Peron’s own citadel.

MASS H-ATTACK ALERT:
America takes cover in the first nation-wide civil defense drill against a mock H-bomb attack. 56 cities participate in the exercise, in which 3 million mock casualties were estimated in New York alone. In Washington, the President and national leaders rush to secret emergency headquarters, chosen from 30 locations outside the capital, testing whether the government can continue its functions under attack conditions.

MISS GERMANY:
GERMANY – Spotlight on beauty, as a flock of fetching frauleins parade in the “Miss Germany” contest. The winner will go on to Hollywood, later, as her nation’s representative in the big “Miss Universe” contest. She’s lovely Margit Neunke, of Cologne.

MR. UNIVERSE:
LONDON – Muscles on parade as body-builders from 20 nations vie for the crown of “Mr. Universe.” Terrific torsos, every one, but tops in the amateur class is America’s own Mickey Hargitay.

RACE CAR HITS CROWD, KILLS 80:
FRANCE – A black day at the annual Grand Prix, the LeMans classic of sports car speed and endurance. In the second hour of the round the clock motor marathon, a Mercedes crashes into the rear of another car, caroms into the crowd, and explodes.
The flaming wreck cuts a 400 yard furrow of death, killing 80, injuring over 100 more – the worst disaster in the annals of auto racing.

NICKELODEON ANNIVERSARY:
PITTSBURGH – The motion picture industry marks the golden anniversary of the first Nickelodeon, grand-daddy of the movies as we know them. There’s a nostalgic look at the films showed on that historic occasion.

ARAB MONARCH VISITS SPAIN:
SPAIN – Another development in Spain’s diplomatic wooing of the Arab world, as Jordan’s young King Hussein and Queen Dina pay a state visit to Generalissimo Franco. A gala procession marks the occasion.

TITO AND U NU CONFER:
YUGOSLAVIA – Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia greets Burma’s Premier U Nu as the Asian leader returns Tito’s good-will visit of last year. A warmly spontaneous welcome by the city of Belgrade greets U Nu.

INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER:
JAPAN – Dignitaries representing the nations of the world attend the opening of Japan’s half million dollar International House, making a new era of cultural exchange, a gateway of understanding between East and West.

MATSU STRENGTHENED:
MATSU ISLAND – Driven from the front pages by new world developments, the Nationalist Chinese fortress island, within gun range of Red China’s mainland, receives new supplies and ammunition, building strength against any sneak attack.

SCALLOP FLEET SAILS:
NOVA SCOTIA – Calm weather on the Bay of Fundy is the signal for the scallop fleet to put out, and begin harvesting the world’s richest trove of the succulent seafood, punishing work that lasts as long as the men and the weather hold out.

POLISH ACE JOINS U.S.A.F.:
Refugee Polish flier Jerzy Jaswinski, who flew a Red MIG to Denmark and freedom in 1953, enlists in the U.S. Air Force, to fly under the insignia of freedom.

INTER-CITY HELICOPTER:
ENGLAND – A giant helicopter designed for inter-city helicopter service is flown. The huge craft, may usher in a new age of commuting through the clouds.

HORSING AROUND IN THE BULL RING:
SPAIN – Horsing around in the bull ring, as an agile equine takes the place of El Toro in a mock combat with its trainer. A combination of finesse and foolishness that wins the crowd’s plaudits.

GERMAN DEFENSE HEAD VISITS NATO:
FRANCE – West German Defense Minister Blank visits NATO headquarters. Once an enemy, his nation is now a full partner in the Atlantic Alliance. An historic occasion, the first visit to French soil by a German military leader since World War II.

UNITED NATIONS’ 10TH BIRTHDAY:
SAN FRANCISCO – 260 delegates, including 38 foreign ministers, converge on the birthplace of the United Nations, for ceremonies commemorating the 10th anniversary of the world organization. President Eisenhower quotes the sage counsel of Abraham Lincoln in his keynote address.

MAYOR WAGNER VISITS GERMANY:
GERMANY – New York’s Mayor Wagner visits the little town of Nasttnetten, where his father, the late Sen. Wagner was born. A proud day for the Mayor, and for the town, whose 2,000 inhabitants turn out in welcome.

AQUASHOW OPENS:
NEW YORK CITY – Highlights of the Aqua-show, featuring the corps de water-ballet, in a graceful symphony of motion – high-divers in a thrilling display of skill and precision – and, of course, the Aqua-zanies, clowns extra-ordinary, with new and wackier antics for the new season.

MISTER BALDY OF 1955:
ITALY – A bald-headed men’s club holds its annual contest for Mr. Baldy of the year. Domes gleaming, the competitors submit to the judges’ magnifying glass. The slightest fuzz, and you’re disqualified. For the winner, a big kiss – atop his polished pink pate.

NATIONAL AUTO CHAMPIONSHIPS:
LANGHORNE, PA. – Tragedy almost repeats itself in the 100 mile National Auto Championships, where a mass crash two years ago injured scores. On the same turn, a car skids out of control, and somersaults down the track. A moment of terror, but the driver miraculously survives. Time for a breath of relief, and then the rain descends, and washes out the race.

FLECK OUSTS HOGAN IN U.S. OPEN GOLF:
SAN FRANCISCO – 4-time Open champion Ben Hogan versus unknown Jack Fleck of Davenport, Iowa, in the playoff for America’s golfing crown. Playing with Hogan-built clubs in the sudden-death match, Fleck shows the skill and assurance of a master, holing out with a 69, 3 strokes better than Hogan, for a stunning upset victory. Golf’s big story of 1955.
