Attack! The Battle For New Britain: Reel-5
U.S. 1st Marine Div advance through thick jungle after landing at Cape Gloucester on the Japanese held Island of New Britain, part of Operation Cartwheel. Marines come under enemy machine gun fire, troops drop to ground, American soldier returns fire with BAR automatic rifle, another throws hand grenade. U.S. Marines fire 50 cal machine gun. More infantry troops wade ashore from LCI (Landing Craft Infantry) ships. Marines wade (advance) through a jungle swamp. At the front, troops dig fox holes. Marine with war dog. Wounded soldier being given a drink of water, another wounded taken to rear on stretcher or litter.
U.S. Marine cautiously advance, body of dead Japanese soldier. Marines comes under heavy enemy machine gun fire. Sounds and sounds of intense jungle combat, firefight in dense jungle growth. Marine firing M1 rifle, Marine throws hand grenade. CU hand dropping mortar round into tube, mortar fires. Marine shoves round into bazooka tube, arms rocket, Marine gunner fires bazooka. Marine use flamethrower, another throws hand grenade. Marine drags dead Japanese soldier into clearing. Shows bodies of dead Japanese soldiers. More troops arrive aboard LCT (Landing Craft Tank) ships, Buffalo and Alligator LVTs and jeeps unload from LCT ship. Infantry troops following a medium tank through jungle.
