Unedited footage. The Battle of Okinawa, code name Iceberg, lasted from early April 1945 until mid-June 1945. For the first time Americans were invading what the Japanese considered their home soil. Gen. Simon Buckner was killed by enemy artillery fire on June 18, 1945.

U.S. troops and tank cautiously advance. Soldiers behind rocks as tank fires machine gun. Tank fires cannon. Tank continues advance, soldiers follow. Soldier places explosive charge, huge explosion. Soldier quickly retreats from enemy fire from cave. Smoke from enemy fire from cave, Marines fire rifles. Tank on roadway fires machine gun. Marines fire rifles. Marine machine gun nest. Lt. General Buckner and Major General Shepherd look toward Naha. 6th Div Marines and tanks enter Naha Okinawa. Fighting north side of Naha. Enemy artillery fire causes rapid retreat of Marines and tank. Wounded is loaded on Jeep ambulance.
