It was all over in the first inning for the Cincinnati Reds when the Yankees erupted for five runs. The National Leaguers came back in the third with three tallies, but the mighty Yankees exploded again to wind up on top 13 to 5. It is the American Leaguers' 19th World Series title which they take - four games to one.
PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY MEETS WITH SOVIET FOREIGN MINISTER ANDREI GROMYKO
A meeting that may decide the fate of man is held at the White House between Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and President Kennedy. The U.S. and Russia are reported to be still far apart on negotiations concerning the growing Berlin crisis.
PRINCESS MARGARET'S HUSBAND IS GIVEN A ROYAL TITLE
The Queen’s sister returns from a holiday in Scotland with her husband. The once plain Mr. Armstrong-Jones is now the Earl of Snowden; he was invested with the title so that the Princess' expected child will not be born a commoner.

At a Washington News Conference, President John F. Kennedy says that the Berlin crisis is 'a very, very serious matter unless we can reach a peaceful accommodation'. Referring to Southeast Asia he says that there are 'other areas where we can become involved' and 'we happen to live in the most dangerous time in the history of the human race'.
HOLLYWOOD FILM 'BACK STREET' HAS GLITTERING WORLD PREMIERE
Chicago turns out with a street parade to welcome the first showing of UI's new movie version of Fannie Hurst's classic love story 'Back Street'. John Gavin and Virginia grey head the list of movie stars present.

ALL WEST COAST PLANES GROUNDED DUE TO JOINT U.S. - CANADIAN MILITARY EXERCISE
The largest air defense exercise ever held in the Western World has all civilian aircraft grounded for a 12-hour period. From Los Angeles to Idlewild, airports are strangely silent as nearly 3,000 flights involving tens of thousands of passengers are cancelled for the joint U.S. - Canadian defense exercise. 1,800 fighter aircraft make more than 6,000 sorties in repelling simulated 'enemy bombers'.
TAIWAN MARKS ANNIVERSARY
Chiang Kai-Shek, Leader of the free Chinese in Taiwan, marks the 50th Anniversary of the overthrow of the Manqhu dynasty. Over 10,000 citizens take part in the colorful pageant.
SHAH OF IRAN VISITS FRANCE, CONFERS WITH PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE
The Middle Eastern ruler is received with all the pomp and ceremony at Frances' command as the Shah Of Iran arrives in Paris for a 3-day state visit with his wife who was once a student in the city.

50 MEGATONS - U. S. PROTESTS RED SUPER BOMB TEST
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev addresses the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party and in his marathon talk promises the Russians a workers utopia; in 20 years! Of more immediacy to a worried world is his announcement that the Reds are set to explode a huge bomb of 50 Megatons. This brought a quick request from the United States not to do so. Secretary of State Dean Rusk points out that such an explosion is not necessary from a technical point of view.
RUSSIANS COMPLETING ANNUAL REINDEER ROUNDUP
They have roundups on the steppes of Central Asia, too; but they differ from the ones in the American West. The Russians are completing their annual reindeer roundup; they use the horns for medicine.

UNREST GROWS IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The undercurrent of seething unrest in the Dominican Republic is breaking into the open with increasing frequency. In the latest series of demonstrations, scores are injured and one student dies. Reports have the Trujillo family fleeing to exile.
LAUNCH FIRST OF NEW GERMAN U-BOAT SUBAMARINE
The first German submarine to be built since that nation went down to defeat in 1945 is launched at the Kiel Shipyards. The new subs will be designed for operation in the Baltic area; this time, however, they'll prowl in the defense of Democracy and NATO.
CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE TRAIN 'ON SITE'
The mountains that brood in of Canada's Banff National Park are a lofty classroom for Wardens and members of the Mounted Police as they study rescue techniques firsthand so that they may save the adventuresome from themselves.
HOLLYWOOD FILM 'SPARTACUS' ENTERS SECOND YEAR AT THE PANTAGES THEATRE
It's a happy anniversary for a picture that has enthralled the world. “Spartacus” begins its second year at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles as producer Edward Lewis and stars Johanna Barnes and John Gavin do the honors with a birthday cake.

A former tenant of 1600 Pennsylvania returns for an overnight stay. Former President Harry S. Truman makes his first visit to the White House in eight years.

The General Assembly finally resolved an issue and ends a crisis that has lasted six weeks. U Thant of Burma is elected Secretary-General to fill the unexpired term of Dag Hammarskjold.
PRINCESS MARGARET HAS A SON TO THE DELIGHT OF BRITONS
The Queen's sister and the Earl of Snowden are the proudest parents in all of Britain as they have their first child, fifth in line to the throne.
POPE JOHN XXIII CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY AND CORONATION
It's a dual celebration for Pope John XXIII as he officiates at solemn rites in St. Peter's marking his 3rd anniversary as Pope and his 80th birthday.

DAMAGE TOLL CLIMBS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRE DISASTER
The worst fire in Southern California history rages through the foothills in the Bel-Air and Brentwood districts of Los Angeles County. The blaze raced with incredible swiftness through the brush-choked canyons and destroyed more than 750 homes. Many were in the 100,000 class and owned by motion picture luminaries. Damage in the 14,000 acre fire is estimated at upwards of $20 million.
DEMOCRATS WIN IN KEY EAST COAST ELECTIONS
Mayor Robert F. Wagner is re-elected Mayor of New York City and emerges as a power in the Democratic Party. Bucking Tammany and state party leaders he won handily, while in New Jersey, the dark horse Democratic candidate for Governor, Richard J. Hughes, upsets the Republican candidate, former Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell.

The White House is the scene of some of the most important talks the President has ever held with a foreign leader; those with Prime Minister Nehru of India. Henry Ford, famed motor magnate, goes back to school at his reconstructed village where his boyhood school was rebuilt.

The man who made the FBI famous, J. Edgar Hoover, received one of his innumerable citations - this one from the Boy Scouts.

Secretary of State Cordell Hull sailed for South America and a peace conference. He was in office at the time of Pearl Harbor.

The Papal Secretary of State, Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli visited the United States. He later became Pope Pius XII.

A reporter named Dorothy Kilgallen raced around the world on scheduled airlines. She made it in 24 days, but a rival made it in 18.

Every era has its fads and fancies - 25 years ago it was painted stockings and the girls had themselves out on a limb - or two.
