THE KING IS DEAD:
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN:
The world is shocked and saddened by the sudden death of King George the Sixth of England. Following an illness of more than a year and a serious lung operation from which he appeared to be recovering, the Monarch died quietly in his sleep at Sandringham Castle, the place of his birth. As his fifteen year reign came to an end, Princess Elizabeth, now Queen of England, rushed back from Africa, where she had begun a five-month tour of the Empire. A well-loved ruler’s fifty-six years of life spanned a colorful period in British history during which the nation was involved in two major wars. Flags throughout the world fly at half mast, as nations join in Britain’s mourning.

BRITAIN’S QUEEN:
Britain hails its new queen Elizabeth II as she returns hurriedly from Africa, following the sudden death of her father King George VI. She is greeted by members of her family and cabinet ministers and finds a city in mourning for the monarch, who, in his seventeen year reign gained the affection and devotion of his subjects throughout the world.

TUNISIAN REVOLT:
TUNIS – Martial law is clamped on the French protectorate of Tunisia, following nationalist riots in which three police and a French Colonel were killed. Their funerals are the occasion for mourning in the French North African capital.

BULL TOSSING:
VENEZUELA – Down Caracas way the caballeros give bull throwing a new twist. That is the bull’s tail gets the twist. Horsemen catch up with him and before he knows it brother bull is going backward.

GERMAN SKIERS:
GERMANY – The cream of Germany’s skiers display their prowess on the famous slopes of Garmisch. They compete for a berth that will take them to the Olympics in Oslo.

KING LIES IN STATE:
LONDON – The funeral train bearing the mortal remains of King George Sixth arrives in the British capital from Sandringham. Hundreds of thousands of devout subjects sorrowly watch as the casket escorted by Guardsmen and borne on a gun carriage, is carried to Westminister Hall, to lie in state. Three Queens stand in silent grief.

FLOODS RAVAGE FRANCE:
FRANCE – Still further floods add to the toll of death and destruction caused by a winter of heavy rains. Southwest France is inundated in many areas, as swollen rivers flowing down from the hills cause terrible havoc.

JAPAN BILLIARD QUEEN:
SACRAMENTO – Masako Katsuro demonstrates her cue artistry to members of the Air Force at Mather Field. Married to an AF Sergeant, Masako proves amazingly adept in her 3-cushion shots and other billiard beauties.

WESTMINISTER DOG SHOW:
NEW YORK – A Doberman, Ch. Rancho Dobe’s Storm, walks off with “Best Of Show” honors at 76th Westminster Kennel Club show at Madison Square Garden. Over 2,400 canines are entered, and spectator interest runs high as judging ends.

SONG FOR BROTHERHOOD WEEK:
The National Council of Christians and Jews enlist the help of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, famous composing team, in setting the mood of Brotherhood Week. A Rodgers-Hammerstein tune, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” is the theme song for the week.

DRAMATIC LAST RITES FOR GEORGE VI:
FUNERAL PROCESSION MOVES TO WINDSOR

ENGLAND – Final rites for King George Sixth. Funeral procession moves from London to Windsor, where the King is buried in famed chapel of Windsor Castle. Pomp and pageantry of Empire unfold in England, where monarch and commoner join in last salute to George The Good. Queen Elizabeth II leads her people in dramatic epic of Empire.

WINTER OLYMPICS AT OSLO:
U.S. TEAM OFF TO GOOD START

NORWAY – First pictures of the 6th Winter Olympics at Oslo. The American team gets off to early lead, with Andrea Mead Lawrence copping first in the women’s giant slalom; with two-man bobsledders placing second; and downhill entrants coming in nicely. Spectacular scenes of opening ceremonies at Bislet Stadium, where Princess Ragnhild presides, and Olympic torch is lit.

WINTER OLYMPICS:
OSLO – More Olympic thrills! Latest film highlights from the Winter Games at Oslo include the men’s slalom, and the speed skating at Bislett Stadium, where Norway’s Hjalmar Andersen wins three gold medals, an Olympic record. The slalom is packed with speed and thrills, and near misses from catastrophe.

CARNIVAL TIME:
All over the world the pre-Lenten season is the signal for merry-making and revelry. In Vienna seamstresses are busy with holiday costumes and in Viareggio, Italian artisans bend their craftsmanship to the making of the papier-mache figures which adorn their festival.

SPORTSWEAR:
ENGLAND – British designers put the emphasis on costumes pour le sport. There are fetching numbers for beach and outdoor wear with a distinctly feminine touch.

ROUGH RODEO:
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. – The broncs and bulls give the cow pokes a hard time as they go into high gear in one of California’s most fashionable hoss events.

STOCK CAR RACES:
DAYTONA, FLA. – It’s a jarrin’, joltin’ jalopy contest as the stock car race attracts drivers who just don’t care, and turnover is terrific.

NATO BACKS IKE’S ARMY:
LISBON – At its ninth meeting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization reaches a unanimous decision to form General Eisenhower’s projected army of fifty division and 4,000 planes, and to include West German troops.

GREEK REDS ON TRIAL:
ATHENS – Twenty-nine accused Communist spies go on trial for conspiracy, as prosecutors find hideouts containing secret radio transmitters for communication with Russia.

HALF TANKER REACHES PORT:
RHODE ISLAND – The tanker Fort Mercer which broke in two during a storm is partially salvaged. Its stern end was towed to Brooklyn.

MOVIE TAX REPEALED:
JACKSON, MISS. – The State of Mississippi repeals the state tax on motion picture admissions as Governor Hugh L. White signs the bill.

NORWAY WINS WINTER OLYMPICS:
OSLO – The winter Olympics reach a high note in the winter games as the four-man German bobsled team rockets down the speedy course at near record speed. America’s Andrea Lawrence and Dick Button put on skiing and skating performances that place the U.S. second.

MARDI GRAS ARRIVES:
NEW ORLEANS goes festive again in the pre-lenten carnival that has helped make the Delta city famous. All the traditional pageantry is there.

TRAILER:
Your Red Cross which is always there in time of disaster and emergency again asks motion picture goers to do their bit in making the work possible during the coming year.

VIOLENCE IN LIBYA:
TRIPOLI – Two die and 20 are wounded as violence flares around polling places in the new monarchy’s first free elections. Pro-western factions on the winning side are attacked by the losing nationalists and police are forced to fire into the mobs.

CARNIVAL TIME:
ITALY AND U.S.A. – Scenes of revelry and gaity as merrymakers on both sides of the Atlantic make merry on the eve of Lent. Colorful Flower Festival unfolds in Italian Riviera resort town of San Remo. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras sends the citizens into an ecstasy which transforms streets into dance floors.

SHOWMANSHIP AWARD:
NEW YORK – Look Magazine awards its achievement award to film exhibitor and former Variety Clubs barker Robert O’Donnell for his handling of the “Movietime USA” program during the past year.

HOME FROM KOREA:
PARIS – Poignant scenes take place following parade of French veterans just back from Korea. Wives and families rush out to greet the parading heroes, who have been cited for bravery against the Chinese communists in bitter fighting.

OLYMPIC SKI JUMP:
OSLO – Spectacular climax of the 6th Winter Games. Biggest throng on record – 150,000 persons (one fifth of the total population of Norway) – comes to Holmenkollen Hill to see Norwegian jumpers walk away with first place in the Olympic ski jumping. Thrilling leaps, spine-tingling spills, and a marvelous chuckle at the finish.

BULLET PROOF VEST:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The marine corps unveils its newest protective vest which deflects tommy gun bullets and fragments of hand grenades exploded at close range. The trick is fiber glass which catches the spent missiles.

MOVIES GET AWARD:
NEW YORK – Eric Johnston, on behalf of the motion picture industry, accepts an award of merit given by thirteen preview organizations of women and representing forty million members. They had reviewed three hundred and fifty pictures during the year and the award was their verdict.

ARMCHAIR BIKES:
ITALY – They’ve finally found out a way to ride a bike lying down. And the boys who ride these contraptions are prone to take life easy.

A TOWN MOVES:
CANADA – The mining town of Sherriton, Manitoba, hits the trails, houses, 1700 inhabitant and all. The whole works towed by tractors moves to a new mine location 167 miles north.

INJURY FOILS GEHRMAN “DOUBLE” TRY:
NEW YORK – Don Gehrman fails in a gallant try for a double victory in the half mile in the K. of C. meet. Injured in the first race, he makes a grim try in the mile but loses to Fred Wilt.

ORANGE BATTLE:
ITALY – Citrus really flies at Ivrea as the traditional battle of oranges reaches its peak. Orange juice for breakfast and in your eye.

YANKEES IN SPRING TRAINING:
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – Yankees, of New York, that is, show some sound stuff as they set forth another championship minus Joe DiMaggio.

RED SOX UNLIMBER FOR 1952:
SARASOTA, FLA. – The team of much promise under Lou Boudreau gets the winter kinks ironed to form another threat in the American league race.

TRUMAN ASKS NATO AID:
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman appeals for national unity and for national support of NATO – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The President urges expenditure of almost $8,000,000,000 to help build up Western Democracies against Red aggression.

38 DEAD IN AIR CRASH:
FRANCE – Ghastly wreckage is all that remains of French airliner, crashed with all on board dead shortly after takeoff from Riviera field. Seagulls are blamed for traged.

CANADA COYOTE HUNT:
SASKATCHEWAN – Using speedy Snowmobiles, hunters prowl the snowy wastelands, tracking down and shooting coyotes that are a menace to livestock. Dramatic action of the hunt.

VOICE OF AMERICA:
WASHINGTON – The Voice of America is now going to sea, to spread the voice of freedom behind the Iron Curtain. Pres. Truman speaks during inaugural ceremonies on board cutter “Courier.”

GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING:
NEW YORK – Finals of the East title bouts in the Golden Gloves. Two slam-bang bouts are featured in this exciting ringside round-up of fancy fisticuffs and knockouts.

PICTURE OF FASHION:
PARIS – Camera artistry, pretty models and swanky new French fashions for Milady are blended in this style parade. Models are alluringly framed in picture-frame backgrounds.

AIR RAID DRILL:
LONGMONT, COLO. – An entire town swings into dramatic action during a mock air raid drill. Plane overhead is signal for rescuers and fire fighters to swing into action.

BIG LEAGUE ROUND-UP:
GIANTS – Leo Durocher’s champs work out at Phoenix.
BROWNS – St. Louis team heads for big season.
REDS – Tampa is host to Luke Sewell’s Reds.

EARTHQUAKE RIPS JAP ISLAND:
HOKKAIDO – This northernmost Jap island is a scene of appalling devastation following a severe earthquake and tidal wave that lashes the coastal areas. Scores are dead and hundreds injured as buildings and homes toppled.

CANADA CATTLE SLAUGHTERED:
CANADA – Dread hoof & mouth disease breaks out in Saskatchewan, and hundreds of diseased cattle are rounded up and shot to prevent the further spread of the dread plague.

SEEDS OF DEMOCRACY:
SAN FRANCISCO – Boy and Girl Scouts bring in a harvest of seek packages, collected for Filipino farms by the Committee of Free Asia. “Seeds For Democracy” to help to overcome hunger and privation.

“IKE” HAILED IN GREECE:
ATHENS – On tour of Turkey and Greece, to view their defense potentialities for inclusion with other NATO forces, General Eisenhower is greeted by top Greek Officials and tours ancient city.

SPRING STYLES FORM PAREE:
FRANCE – Meeting the challenge of rival style centers, French designers put their best foot forward. Display some alluring gowns for Spring, with pretty models making the show eye-appealing.

RED CROSS BIRTHDAY:
SALINAS, CALIF. – A one-day campaign to raise funds for the Red Cross is a spectacular success, both in financial results and in motion picture appeal. A gala party ends up with huge birthday cake.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS:
LION TAMER – Pretty Dutch girl passes final exam, tames cagefull of snarly lions.
ON WARPATH – At Tuscon, Cleveland Indians work out under Al Lopez, hoping for stretch vigor in 1952.
