LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA The most beautiful girl in the world… eighteen year old Armi Kuusela, of Finland, chosen from lovelies of thirty nations. Presented with a jeweled crown once worn by an Empress, Miss Universe is the winner of a starring film contract, among other honors.
INTERNAL REVENUE POSTS FILLED:
NEW YORK Secretary of the Treasury Snyder inducts three new local district directors, to succeed political incumbents.
NEW JET INTERCEPTOR “STARFIRE”, UNVEILED:
CALIFORNIA The “Starfire’, our most powerful single-engine plane, is displayed. Radical armament… all rockets, no guns… and electronic control, to smash any foe.

LOS ANGELES At Olympic team trials, records fall, as top field and track men battle for places on this year’s Olympic team. Winners include Mal Whitfield, Harrison Dillard, and other amateur stars. Heartbreak for favored Craig Dixon in the hundred-ten meter hurdles. He stumbles, falls, at the next to the last hurdles. One of the strongest U.S. teams ever… emerges to face Russians for the first time in international competition.
SINGING GOOD-WILL AMBASSADORS:
NEW YORK The Minneapolis Choral-aires, acclaimed as America’s best group of singers, take a trans-Atlantic plane to Britain, and the International Music Festival in Wales, where they’ll represent the U.S. Forty-eight men and women make the trip, made possible by public-spirited Minneapolis citizens.

CHICAGO Taft and Eisenhower arrive on the scene for the final phase of one of the hottest political battles in history. At stake the GOP Presidential nomination. Delegates crowd convention hall for stirring keynote address by General Douglas MacArthur.
HALF MILLION KOREA SORTIES FOR AIR FORCE:
KOREA Thunderjets slash at Communist ground installations, Sabre jets fly top cover and tangle with MIGs, as the Air Force chalks up over half a million combat missions to date in history’s hottest air war.
NEW SEA QUEEN TAKES ATLANTIC BLUE RIBBON:
NEW YORK The S.S. United States sails on her record-smashing maiden voyage, setting a new speed mark for the trans-Atlantic crossing, cutting the Queen Elizabeth’s best time by over ten hours.
FLORENCE CHADWICK FAILS IN RECORD ATTEMPT:

2 TANKERS ABLAZE KILL ONE, INJURE 30:
SAN FRANCISCO Explosions rip two tankers at their dock, send flames 300 feet into air. Four hour blaze takes three million dollar damage toll, kills one, injures thirty.
GOLD CUP RACE:
HOLLYWOOD Two Lea cops honors at turf classic for second straight year, takes $137,000 purse in tight finish over Cyclotron.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION OPENS:
CHICAGO Delegates are called to order for the thirty-first Democratic National Convention. The choice for a presidential nominee is wide open with six contenders in the race. They also hear the keynote speech by Governor Devers of Massachusetts.
TRAGEDY AT SEA:
The Norwegian freighter Black Gull bound for New York becomes a torch as 500 tons of naptholene catch fire and transform the vessel into an inferno 65 miles off Long Island. Forty-five passengers and crewmen are rescued but four perish as they leap into the sea to escape the searing flames.
OLYMPIC OPENING:
HELSINKI Fifty-five year old Paavo Nurmi, one of the all-time Olympic greats, lights the torch that open the fifteenth Olympiad in which 5,800 athletes from 67 nations are competing. Russia is competing for the first time since the days of the czars. Germany and Japan are also taking part for the first time since World War II.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION:
CHICAGO Delegates tempers mount over seating of contested Southern delegates. High point is reached as Mrs. Roosevelt addresses convention, receives 15 minute ovation. Then, the big political show moves into the climactic phase the selection of the candidate the man who’ll battle it out with Ike in November.
EARTHQUAKE
11 PERISH IN SOUTH CALIFORNIA TREMBLOR:
CALIFORNIA The worst earthquake since 1906 rocks the state, centering its fury on the little town of Tehachapi. The mountain community is ravaged by the tremors, eleven persons perish.
OLYMPICS:
HELSINKI Records totter in 1952’s World Games. In the 10,000 meter run, a spectacular performance by Czech Emil Zatopek in the 400 meter hurdles, America’s Charlie Moore sets a new mark.

DEMOCRATS NAME TICKET AS IKE PLANS STRATEGY:
CHICAGO The Democratic Convention gives a tumultuous ovation to Presidential nominee, Adlai Stevenson as he’s introduced by President Truman. Then, his running-mate, Alabama’s Senator John Sparkman is named, and another ovation follows.
COLORADO Republican candidate “Ike” Eisenhower relaxes before the strenuous campaign ahead, and passes on to his running-mate, Senator Nixon, some fly-catching lore, and some political wisdom, too.
KOREAN FRONT
STARS ENTERTAIN, AIR FORCE BLASTS REDS:
KOREA B-29 bombers hammer Pyongyang, the devastating conclusion to a 24-hour aerial assault that reduces all military targets to rubble. Meanwhile, on the front lines, a Hollywood troupe entertains G.I.’s, despite pouring rain.
OLYMPICS
U.S. DOMINATES TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS:
HELSINKI The U.S. forges supremacy in the men’s track and field events with record-toppling performances in the pole vault by the “vaulting Vicar”, Bob Richards in the 110 meter hurdles by Harrison Dillard, in the Javelin throw, an Olympic first for the U.S., by Cy Young. Thrilling performance in the 200 meter dash by Andy Stanfield.

EVA PERON DIES:
ARGENTINA The nation mourns the death of its First Lady, glamorous wife of President Peron. In Buenos Aires, hundreds of thousands of her followers gather before the Ministry of Labor building, where her body lies in state. Born in obscurity, the one-time radio actress rose to power with the nation’s strong man.
NEWS IN BRIEF:
NEW YORK The French liner Flandre arrives after an ill-starred maiden voyage marked by engine failure and other troubles. She’s towed to her berth the final indignity.
AUSTRIA One of the nation’s most spectacular train wrecks strews cars across the landscape when train plunges over a trestle after engine is derailed. Two killed, almost all survivors were injured.
JAPAN A novel greeting for Korea hound replacements. As troopships docks, G.I.’s see 30 Japanese beauties, in traditional colorful kimonos, dancing on the dockside.
ATLANTIC CITY The Incredible Romba makes his American debut with his spine-chilling, death-defying, somersaulting rocket car.
GREENLAND King Christian of Denmark and his queen get a royal welcome as they arrive for a visit to Denmark’s largest overseas possession. The well-loved rulers are presented with the Eskimos’ finest gifts.
OLYMPICS
RECORDS FALL AS GAMES NEAR END:
HELSINKI An astounding performance by Czechoslovakia’s superman, Emil Zatopek. In the marathon, he sets a new record for the grueling 26 mile event… and this Iron Man from the Iron Curtain takes his third Gold Medal. Thrilling victories in the 400 meters. Women’s Relay for the U.S. team… and in the metric mile, Joseph Barthel of Luxembourg is overcome by emotion after his victory, bringing his little country her first Gold Medal.
CHESAPEAKE BRIDGE:
MARYLAND The third longest bridge in the world is officially opened by Governor McKeldin. Motorists are saved 125 miles of travel. On hand for the occasion are famous quadruped star Francis the Talking Mule, and Starlet Jean Cambron. The first motorcade crosses as the ferry makes its last trip.
MORMON DAY:
SALT LAKE CITY A gala parade marks the Days of ’47 celebration 105 years after Mormon pioneers reached this rich valley. 90,000 look on as elaborate floats make history live again.
