PARLIAMENT OPENS:
ENGLAND – Queen Elizabeth amid traditional pomp and pageantry goes to the House of Lords for her first official opening of Parliament.

EDEN BACKS U.S. ON KOREAN PRISONERS:
NEW YORK – Britain’s Foreign Minister Anthony Eden delivers an eloquent plea for peace in Korea, before the U.N. General Assembly. Russia’s Andrei Vishinsky does not join in the ovation that follows.

DRAMA AT SEA:
HOLLAND – In a strange caprice of the sea, the freighter ‘Faustus’ abandoned after going aground, floats free, sails into Rotterdam harbor, crashing through a seawall, and sinks – blocking all traffic.

NOBEL AWARDS:
CALIFORNIA – Stanford University’s Dr. Felix Bloch receives the international award for discoveries in nuclear physics.

FRANCE – Outstanding man of letters Francois Mauriac, one of the world’s most distinguished novelists, receives this year’s prize for literary achievement.

SPANISH VETERANS MEET:
SPAIN – Fifty-thousand veterans of the Spanish Civil War gather for two-day ceremonies, are addressed by Generalissimo Franco.

JAPS GET U.S. WARSHIPS:
JAPAN – U.S. warships are turned over to Japan for her Maritime Safety Force. The nucleus of a future Navy, they’ll guard her coasts, relieving U.S. ships of patrol chores.

FRENCH FORCES DRIVE TO CUT OFF RED UNITS:
INDO-CHINA – French Union forces in strategic northwest delta region spearhead a counter-attack against Reds, as the rainy season ends, and fighting flares again.

IKE RELAXES WITH FAMILY:
GEORGIA – President-elect Eisenhower and the future First Lady celebrate Mamie’s birthday with the family. Grandson David’s party manners make his famous grandfather laugh heartily.

WEIZMANN FUNERAL:
ISRAEL – Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of Israel and leader of world Zionism, is buried on his estate. The nation he helped bring into being begins a thirty-day period of mourning.

MOTION PICTURE PIONEER AWARDS:
NEW YORK – Outstanding leaders and pioneers of the motion picture industry are honored by Look Magazine. N.J. Blumberg, pioneer of the year, and Chairman of the Board of Universal-International Pictures, is cited.

FOOTBALL:

MICHIGAN – Michigan State holds its undefeated position, troucing Notre Dame, 21-3.

CONNECTICUT – Princeton takes the Big Three Ivy title, defeating Yale, 27-21.

IKE AT CAPITAL:
WASHINGTON – President-elect Eisenhower arrives at the nation’s capital to the cheers of half-a-million people. He has an historic meeting with President Truman to discuss problems of the incoming and outgoing administrations.

CAPITAL NEWS:
WASHINGTON – President Truman awards the Harmon International trophy to Madame Jacqueline Auriol, daughter-in-law of the president of France for her aviation achievements. Mister Truman also receives his Thanksgiving Gobbler from the Turkey Growers Association.

NEW CHILE PRESIDENT:
CHILE – General Carlos Ibanez is inaugurated president of Chile amid spectacular ceremonies and is given the sash of office by his predecessor.

OPERATION FIDO:
ENGLAND – A wartime procedure by which gasoline is burned to lift the fog from airport runways, is revived for civilian aircraft.

JAPAN’S CROWN PRINCE:
JAPAN – Crowds gather to hail Crown Prince Akihito in his first public appearance since his investiture as heir apparent to the throne.

BIRTHDAY FOR A PRINCE:
ENGLAND – Prince Charles is four years old and all England joins his mother Queen Elizabeth in celebrating. His little sister helps out too.

IT’S SKI TIME:
OREGON – There’s many a sitzmark on the snow-covered slopes of Mount Hood, as early birds of the ski season try their luck on modified bed slats.

TURKEY – Off the coast of Turkey, America, Greece and Turkey join in full-dress amphibious maneuvers. 3,000 Marines storm ashore under air cover in realistic defense exercises.

IKE AT U.N.:
NEW YORK – President-elect Eisenhower visits United Nations headquarters with his prospective Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles. Secretary General Trygve Lie plays host on Ike’s tour.

VARIETY CLUBS:
PITTSBURGH – Variety Clubs International delegates gather for Tent Number One’s 25th Anniversary Party, looking back on a quarter century of good works.

UNDERWATER CAMERA:
CANADA – A new remote-control underwater camera aids scientists, studying aquatic life. They can study fish at home in their watery habitat without even getting wet.

FOOTBALL:

CALIFORNIA – USC and UCLA, both unbeaten and untied, battle for the Rose Bowl, Southern Cal. Wins, 14-12, and will go on to face Wisconsin in the New Year’s Day Classic.

OHIO – Ohio State clashes with powerful Michigan, and puts the Wolverines out of the running for a possible Rose Bowl bid, winning, 27-7.

KANSAS BOWS TO MISSOURI:
MISSOURI – The Kansas jayhawkers how to Missouri in the Big 7 football finale, 20-19.

PARATROOPS ACTIVE ON BATTLEFRONT:
KOREA – Mass airborne operations all along the front rush troops and heavy equipment to areas where they are needed. Reinforcements and supplies for an emergency air-strip land on the door step, with amazing accuracy.

MOVIE PIONEERS:
NEW YORK – Motion Picture pioneers gather for their Jubilee dinner, welcoming sixty new members to their midst. Named as pioneer of the year is N.J. Blumberg chairman of the board of Universal-International Pictures.

AMPHIBIOUS JEEP SHOWN:
ENGLAND – Security wraps are taken off a trans-Atlantic edition of the Jeep. As rugged as its U.S. counterpart, Britain’s “Champ” is amphibious – navigates easily in up to 5 feet of water.

SANTA CLAUS PARADE:
SEATTLE – The City’s fourth annual Santa Claus Parade ushers in the Holiday season. Two hundred thousand onlookers see a wonderland array of paraders and comic balloon characters, and none other than Santa himself.

ALPINE OBERVATORY STUDIES COSMIC RAYS:
FRANCE – One of the most thrilling mountain trips in the world comes into being as a aerial tramway begins operations, supplying one of Europe’s most famous observatories, atop the Pic du Midi.

KOREA AWAITS IKE:
KOREA – As dignitaries await the inspection visit of President-elect Eisenhower, the city of Seoul enthusiastically prepares for the great day. A bustle of activity bedecks the streets with banners and buntings, signs and slogans.

AIR TRAGEDY:
WASHINGTON – One of the most touching of recent air crashes turns a holiday for servicemen and their families into tragedy. Thirty-seven aboard perish when the transport plows into a hillside.

MAMIE AT THE WHITE HOUSE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Mamie” Eisenhower, America’s future first lady, is given a preview of her new home by the outgoing occupant, Bess Truman. And the Washington Women’s Press Corps gives Mamie an advance taste of what it’s like to be Mrs. President.

DEFENSE CHIEFS MEET:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Incoming and outgoing Secretaries of Defense Charles E. Wilson and Robert Lovett confer on Pentagon affairs, following Wilson’s unprecedentedly early appointment, in a move by Ike to smooth the transition between administrations.

“BARC” DEBUT:
SEATTLE – Security wraps are taken off the “BARC” – a mammoth new amphibious vehicle. This sixty ton behemoth can haul an 100-ton load to a beach-head. Equally at home on land and sea, this behemoth is a massive addition to America’s combat arsenal.

OPERATION RAWIN:
NEW JERSEY – The Signal Corps unveils “Rawin” – a new tool of meteorological warfare – a mobile device giving quicker and more accurate reports of wind direction and velocity – with atomic implications.

MIDDIES SINK CADETS:
PHILADELPHIA – At the annual Army-Navy classic, Navy triumphs over Army for the third straight year, 7-0.

SAARLAND – The “coal-pit of western Europe” votes to remain semi-independent, and economically linked to France in a crucial election. With European unity at stake, voters rebuff German nationalism.

REUTHER NAMED CIO LEADER:
ATLANTIC CITY – The Congress of Industrial Organizations chooses UAW chief Walter Reuther as its new President, to succeed the late Philip Murray. Governor Adlai Stevenson addresses the convention.

“THUNDER-STREAK” DEBUT:
NEW YORK – The “Thunder-streak,” new jet fighter-bomber, takes a how as the Air Force accepts the first production model. Sharply swept-back wings indicate its near-sonic speed.

MEXICAN PRESIDENT INAUGURATED:
MEXICO – Adolfo Ruiz Cortines takes the oath of office as Mexico’s next president. Attending the inaugural are retiring Ambassador O’Dwyer and Vice President-elect Nixon.

HAND-DOG LOOK:
GERMANY – A dozen stockings, filled with puppies – one Shepherd pup in each, to Mama’s bewilderment. Blame winter weather, and muddy paws. What to do? Hang ‘em up to dry. No Yuletide twist to this tale.

FRENCH BATTLE REDS:
INDO-CHINA – French forces launch savage counter-attack to turn back a Red thrust at South-east Asia’s “rice bowl”.

SANTA GOES MODERN:
HEIDELBERG – Santa goes modern, arriving by Helicopter to visit American and German youngsters. But on arrival, Saint Nick swaps ‘copter for old-fashioned sleigh.

ELIZABETHAN COINAGE:
ENGLAND – The Royal Mint turns out new coins bearing the Queen’s profile, as Coronation nears. The design, approved by the Duke of Edinburgh, rouses popular controversy.

VESSELS WINS GRID TROPHY:
NEW YORK – Billy Vessels of Oklahoma U. is awarded the Heisman Trophy as outstanding grid star. Action scenes recall his performances on field that carted the honor.

EISENHOWER IN KOREA!
President-elect Eisenhower fulfills his campaign pledge with a three day visit to Korea – a visit that may affect the course of history. In three crowded days, under a veil of secrecy, Ike inspects U.N. troops, talks with top field commanders, flies over the front. In Seoul, half-a-million throng the streets, a popular demonstrations hailing Eisenhower’s arrival, as elsewhere, he sees South Korean troops demonstrate their capabilities in live-ammunition maneuvers. Talks with Korean President Syngman Rhee round out Eisenhower picture of conditions here. His tour concludes with a mass press conference at 8th Army headquarters, where he tells newsmen of his hopes for the triumph of freedom. Three fateful days – a dramatic story.

TEXAS – Milk Bowl Pee-wee Football Classic sees Boys’ Town team overthrown by Variety Boys Club of Houston eleven, 28-0.

NORTH CAROLINA – South Carolina high school all-stars come from behind to defeat North Carolina high school stars in Shrine Bowl charity benefit match, 23-19.

PHILADELPHIA – North Catholic meets Abraham Lincoln High in the 15th annual high school fifteenth championship, 25-0.

FRENCH STRIKE BACK IN INDO-CHINA WAR:
INDO CHINA – French garrison forces brace for onslaught by 20,000 Reds. Their positions are over-fun, but a savage counter-attack hurls back the Reds. A costly defeat for the Viet Minh forces.

IKE EN ROUTE HOME:
Aboard the U.S.S. Helena, President-elect Eisenhower continues policy planning with top advisors, en route home from his Korean visit.

FREIGHTER AGROUND:
WASHINGTON – The S.S. Yorkmar is driven aground by pounding seas near Seattle. High and dry on the beach, the stranded freighter awaits re-floating, weathering out the gale meanwhile.

NEEDLEWORK CONTEST:
NEW YORK – Grand champions in 1952’s national needlework contest display their trophies at the contest’s finale. Three thousand entries are shown – including a fabulous crocheted U.S. flag.

PERON OPENS CONGRESS:
ARGENTINA – Generalissimo Perron opens a special session of Congress, outlines special and economic reforms in a new five-year plan

COMMANDO CLIFF-HANGERS:
MALTA – Commando troops display more agility than mountain goats, negotiating a Cliffside handily in a spectacular demonstration of their skill.

OPERATION MORALE:
CALIFORNIA – The Navy films and records the voices of service men’s loved ones in a program to bring Xmas cheer to men far from home. They’ll see and hear wives and children in Yule greetings.

BRITAIN EXPLODES A-BOMB:
AUSTRALIA – Britain explodes an atomic bomb in tests near the desolate Monte Bello islands – the third world power to possess atom weapons. A triumph for British science, the A-bomb produces an unusual cloud – possible indication of a new type bomb.
