EISENHOWER – KEFAUVER WIN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARIES:
NEW HAMPSHIRE – Straws in the political wind from the Granite State! After weeks of campaigning and listening, the voters go to the polls on Town Meeting Day. Their choices – Gen. Eisenhower over Taft and other GOP hopefuls, and Senator Kefauver winning a resounding victory over Pres. Truman.

FRENCH VILLAGE THREATENED:
TIGNES, FRANCE – Death hovers over this tiny lumber village high in the Alps. The government wants to flood the place to make way for a giant power project. But the citizens are angry, and some sixty of them even threaten mass suicide rather than leave.

119 DEAD IN R.R. WRECK:
BRAZIL – Gruesome scenes of death on the rails, twenty miles outside Rio. Two cars of one train jump the tracks, into path of speeding suburban electric. Over one hundred dead, and hundreds were injured.

REVOLUTION IN CUBA:
HAVANA – Revolution comes to Havana, as “Strong Man” Gen. Fulgencio Batista, who overthrew government back in 1933 to set himself in power, stages a lightning coup and ousts the incumbent Pres. Prio Socarras.

SMUGGLING IN BERLIN:
BERLIN – West Berlin police are coping with an increasing flood of goods from the Eastern sector. Large hauls of smuggled goods are made at the city’s border, and carted away to warehouses.

NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK:
LONDON – Sewing Week in England, and a contest to see who can find a needle in a haystack. Some enterprising character brings a magnet along to find the needle, but good old luck wins out and finder receives a sewing machine.

TRUMAN URGES SCHOOL EDITORS TO BUILD FOR COUNTRY’S FUTURE:
NEW YORK – Pres. Truman makes a special trip from Key West to address 3,300 faculty advisors and editors of student publications. Urging the youngsters to build for their country’s future, Mr. Truman tells them they live in the greatest republic of all time.

IWO JIMA ANNIVERSARY:
IWO JIMA ISLAND – On the 7th anniversary of our bloody assault on the Jap Pacific stronghold, peace hovers over the rocky island where 4,500 Americans died wresting vital fort on the road to Tokyo.

MECHANICAL COP ON JOB:
WOODLAND, CALIF. – A portable traffic light, dubbed the “Mechanical Cop,” goes on the job, to protect children at school crossing. The “copper copper” does everything but give you a ticket.

U.S. TRAINS JET PILOTS:
ARIZONA – At Williams Air Force base, jet cadets from many lands complete their training under the Mutual Defense Assistance program. Jet planes roar overhead during graduation ceremonies.

NEW PAINTING BY DALI:
MADRID, SPAIN – The controversial creator of Surrealism exhibits the new, classical phase of his art to delighted critics in his native Spain. Colorful canvases show extent to which Dali has renounced earlier art form.

“STEEL TOWN” IN DETROIT:
DETROIT – Thousands turn out for the gals premiere showing of U-I’s new hit, “Steel Town.” Ann Sheridan, John Lund and Howard Duff, stars of the film, are on hand for the colorful premiere.

INVITATION BASKETBALL:
NEW YORK – In thrilling finals at Madison Square Garden, LaSalle College, doomed by the experts at the start of the tourney, comes through to defeat Dayton for the coveted National Invitational crown.

ANCIENT LOCOMOTIVES CUT UP AS SCRAP FOR NEW WAR SINEWS:
OHIO – Ancient veterans of the rails highball down the track on their way to the scrap pile. Scores of outdated engines, no longer useful, are put to the torch and thousands of pounds of vital scrap iron gained for construction of new tanks needed in Korea.

KOJE ISLAND RIOTS:
OFF SO. KOREA – This prison island, already the scene of violence between communist prisoners and anti-Red converts, flares into violence again. Communist prisoners started the riot vby jeering at converted prisoners.

RHEE VISITS BATTLESHIP:
OFF KOREA – Pres. Syngman Rhee of the South Korea Republic arrives by helicopter for an official visit on board the U.S.S.Wisconsin, which has been trading blows with the Reds off Wonsan.

U.S. AID FOR AUSTRIA:
DONAWITZ – Marshall Plan aid brings a new steel industry to Austria. Blast furnaces and other equipment go into high gear, with ore coming from nearby mines. Dynamic proof of U.S. aid helping revive free Europe.

BUTTONS AND BUSSES:
NEW YORK – Three English double-decker busses arrive for goodwill tour of the U.S., and with them come the King & Queen of the “Pearlies” – colorful rulers of London’s Cockneys.

OPERATION “HOT FOOT”
KOREA – Already in use against the Reds are emplaced flamethrowers, made of cartridge cases, blasting caps and napalm gasoline that can be detonated to stop attacking forces. Spectacular fireworks – and a July Fourth display to stop the Reds.

OLD DOGS AND NEW TRICKS:
VANCOUVER, B.C. – When monkeys go to the dogs, and vice versa, you’re in for the most frolicking session of laughs and tears in many a moon. Zoo curator takes “Pete” with him when he feeds the monkeys, and doggone if Pete doesn’t get all snarled up in monkey-shines.

223 DEAD IN DIXIE TORNADO:
AIRLIFT FEED TO LIVESTOCK

ARKANSAS – At latest count, 223 persons lost their lives and over one thousand were hurt, in wake of sudden tornado that lashed wide areas in the South. Hardest hit is Judsonia, a small town in Arkansas, where devastation looks like place had been leveled by atom bomb.

NEVADA – Stranded in high mountain areas by blizzards, thousands of cattle are kept alive by “Operation Haylift” – Air Force and Navy planes flying hay to marooned herds.

“OSCAR” ARE AWARDED:
HOLLYWOOD – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts 7 Sciences presents the coveted annual awards – “Oscars” – during a brilliant star-studded ceremony in the film capital. James Stewart, Shelley Winters, the N.J. Blumbergs and other film folk attend.

CAT IN A TREE:
PARIS – Here’s a quaint little story about a cat stuck in a tree, and the neighbors arduous efforts to free pussy from her precarious perch. Hungry dogs wait in vain for cat to fall.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

ALL-STAR SPORT CARNIVAL:
NEW YORK – 9,000 fans attend benefit carnival at Madison Square Garden, helping raise money for the Olympic fund. Olympic hopefuls compete in track events, weight lifting, and Olympic champ Dick Buttons thrills with his skating artistry.

BOWLING CONGRESS UNDERWAY:
MILWAUKEE – The 49th annual ABC – American Bowling Congress – gets off to a thunderous start in the Milwaukee Arena. Thrills to spare, and strikes to burn, and trick stuff by old-timers of the sport.

CARDINAL MAKES APPEAL:
NEW YORK – Francis Cardinal Spellman makes dramatic appeal for funds as Catholic Charities drive begins.

AVIATION IN THE NEWS

VERY VERSATILE VEHICLE:
NEW YORK – A versatile vehicle, at home on land or in the air, sheds its wings upon landing and then drives off into city traffic. It’s got everything, even a pretty girl along for the ride.

HELICOPTER GETS NOD:
BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – The first transport helicopter certified by the CAA for regular scheduled airline service takes off at the Sikorsky plant and goes through its amazing paces for the newsreel cameras.

INTERNAT’L FASHION REVUE:
ATLANTIC CITY – Swank new styles for play and for evening wear designed by artists from two continents, are alluringly displayed by pretty models in the 2nd International Fashion Revue.

CHILDRENS’ FAIRYLAND:
OAKLAND, CALIF. – Nursery rhymes and fairy tales step right out of Mother Goose on two oak shaded acres of a downtown park. The $50,000 fairyland is an ingenious children’s zoo, and do the small fry love it!

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING:
NEW YORK – Slam-bang boats highlighting the 25th Inter-City Golden Gloves tournament at Madison Square Garden. The Chicago team wins the title, as young ring hopefuls let fly with plenty of leather, and knockdowns come fast and furious.

SMALL FRY SKIING:
STE. MARGUERITE, QUEBEC – Tiny tots ranging in age from two to twelve try their luck on the ski slope. Spills are frequent, but the ski-nippers take it like good sports. You’ll be hearing from them in the Olympics, in 1964.

TRUMAN WON’T RUN:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Truman’s long awaited announcement comes at a Jefferson Jackson Day dinner, when he emphatically tells fellow Democrats that he will not be a candidate for re-election. He tells the nation that he will campaign vigorously for his party’s nominee.

NATO REPORT:
FRANCE – From his headquarters at SHAPE near Paris, General Eisenhower issues an encouraging report on the organization of NATO troops for the defense of western Europe.

BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS:
LONDON – In the all-England badminton championships a Malayan team is pitted against a Danish pair and the Malayans return home with their title intact, after lightning fast action.

ROYAL VISIT:
COPENHAGEN – King Gustav of Sweden pays a state visit to Denmark with his queen Louise. And the full pageantry of the Danish capital is unrolled for him.

BASKETBALL CHAMPS:
WASHINGTON – When the chips are down for the coveted double-A crown the Kansas Jayhawks top the Brooklyn St. John’s in tidy fashion.

OLYMPIC TRIALS:
KANSAS CITY – The rampaging Kansas Jayhawks take another step toward the Olympic finals by overwhelming Springfield, Missouri by a wide margin.

GREECE CELEBRATES:
ATHENS – Greece celebrates the 150th anniversary of its independence with an impressive show of military might.

NEW FACES AWARD:
DETROIT – The Detroit Free Press plays host to two young film stars who have distinguished themselves, as they give their award to Piper Laurie, a home town girl, and Jeff Chandler.

CAPITAL WELCOMES JULIANA:
WASHINGTON – It’s a royal welcome for Queen Juliana and her consort Prince Bernhard, as the royal couples arrives by plane for an American visit. Pres. Truman and Mrs. Truman greet their Dutch Majesties at the airport, accompany them on triumphal trip to Congress, where a joint session hears a dramatic speech by the charming Queen.

100,000th KOREAN VET HAILED:
SEATTLE – A royal welcome greets the 100,000th returning combat veteran home from Korea. Cpl. Caspar DeAngelis of Brooklyn receives flowers, kisses from pretty girls, and a parade in his honor.

WINDOW WASHING DELUXE:
NEW YORK – The new Lever House on Park Avenue boasts the most modern window washing device ever – an elevator scaffold that runs up and down outside the glass-and-steel building, guided by a moving car on the roof.

NEW FACES IN FILMS:
DETROIT – Jeff Chandler and Piper Laurie, Universal-International stars, are hailed in the Motor City as they arrive to receive “New Faces” award by the Detroit Free Press. Countless fans congratulate the young film stars.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

SKATING QUEEN TAKES BOW:
NEW YORK – 19-year-old Jacqueline DuBief of Paris, first French world figure skating champ, delights Radio City onlookers with an exhibition of her skating artistry.

MOTORCYCLE MUD RACE:
SEATTLE – Two girls join the fun this year, joining the men cyclists for the annual Spring mud race through the quagmire. It’s gooey and muddy, and most of the hopefuls bog down, but the winner gets a hero’s reward.

S.F. WELCOMES “SEALS”:
SAN FRANCISCO – A 60-car motorcade gets the “Seals” off to a good start for the baseball season. City officials present trophies to popular team, under new manager Tommy Heath.

SKY SPILLS DEATH

FIVE DIE AS PLANE HITS NEW YORK BOROUGH:
NEW YORK – For the fifth time in four months, death strikes from the skies in the metropolitan area of New York. A C-46 cargo plane carrying a cargo of flowers and lingerie plummets down onto a house in Queens, killing five persons and injuring scores.

MODEL U.N. CONFERENCE:
LOS ANGELES – World government on the college campus. A model United nations conference sponsored by the University of Southern California, and attended by students form many colleges and universities, including students from foreign lands. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt makes a special film address to the group.

GRAND NATIONAL

“TEAL” WINS ENGLISH STEEPLECHASE MARKED BY SEPCTACULAR SPILLS:
AINTREE, ENGLAND – The 106th running of the famed Grand National Steeplechase sees 47 starters, and only ten finishing. Spectacular spills mark the turf classic, of 4 ? miles and 30 grueling jumps. The second choice “Teal” wins by five lengths to make racing history. The favored “Freebooter” goes down nearing the finish line.

STEEL STRIKE OFF:
In a dramatic and unprecedented move, President Truman orders government seizure of the nation’s steel mills, minutes before a strike deadline, following a breakdown in negotiations. Six hundred thousand workers fire up the banked furnaces.

MOCK WARFARE:
LAMPASAS, TEX. – “Invaders” seize the town as part of the giant maneuvers known as “exercise Longhorn.” Town officials are arrested and the entire community out under martial law.

EJECTOR SEAT:
PHILADELPHIA – The navy unveils its latest pilot safety device – an ejector seat that crashes the pilot through a plexi-glass canopy for a distance of sixty-five feet.

GERMAN CIRCUS:
GERMANY – Did you ever kiss a tiger? Well this trainer does and cuffs him around to boot and then twists his tail.

HORSE OLYMPICS:
SOUTH CAROLINA – The cream of America’s equestrians show the stuff they hope to demonstrate on the American team at the Olympics in Finland this summer.

KID CLOUTERS:
ANNAPOLIS – The five-year-old sons of navy officers mix it with gloves that are almost as big as they are. The fellow on the receiving end looks to his corner for advice.

INDO-CHINA WAR:
INDO-CHINA – In a renewed offensive, French colonial forces round up communists that have infiltrated the rich rice bowl of northern Indo-China. With heavy artillery and napalm bombs they blast villages in which the Reds entrenched themselves.

IKE QUITS NATO:
PARIS – Ike sends his request to be relieved of his post as commander in chief of Western Europe’s armies. He explains what his status in the army would be should he be nominated at GOP convention.

HIGHEST HONORS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three more Korean war heroes receive the Congressional medal of honor from the hands of President Truman.

FLOODS SWEEP SEVEN STATES:
In the highest flood crest of its history, the Missouri river sweeps over rich farmlands of the middle west and renders 74,000 homeless.

GREEK BEAUTY CONTEST:
GREECE – The Greeks not only have a word for it but they have the girls to prove it. Lovely is the word for the maidens who compete for the title of Miss Hellas.

EASTER PARADE:
NEW YORK – Despite lowering skies and a raw wind, Easter promenaders are out in force along New York’s famed Fifth Avenue. The hats – well, you have to see them to believe them.
