NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1952 (UE52041)

FUTURE GENERALS:
WEST POINT – President joins the cadet corps in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the military academy. He warns them of the important role that is theirs in maintaining the free world.

IKE’S FAREWELL:
General Eisenhower tours the NATO nations and in Denmark and Holland thanks cheering citizens for the co-operation in his task of welding a western European defense force.

MISS UNIVERSE:
Both France and Germany select their candidates for the title of Miss Universe at the competition to be held in Long Beach, California. If these gals are European samples, the going should be torrid.

CHILE BUILDS:
CHILE – Chile blazes new trails as 2,100 miles of new roads take shape on the western slopes of the Andes.

ROYAL VISIT:
SPAIN – Abdulah Ilah, regent of Iraq, pays a state visit to the government of Spain and receives a royal welcome from Generalissimo Franco.

FREE WHEELERS:
CALIFORNIA – Mayhem by motor is the order of the day when chosen dare-devils do everything with a car they shouldn’t and walk away from it.

RIDGWAY TAKES OVER NATO POST AS NEW DEFENSE PACT IS SIGNED:
PARIS & BONN – As the former UN Commander in Korea arrives to replace Gen. Eisenhower as commander of Western Europe’s NATO forces, the German peace treaty is signed in Germany by the Four Powers. Paris Reds greet Ridgway arrival with violence, and the treaty signed is answered by other communist threats. But the West moves forward toward greater security.

NEW KOREA TRUCE NEGOTIATOR:
PANMUNJOM – The long-stalled truce negotiations get a new American boss, as General Harrison replaces Admiral Joy as chief negotiator for the UN forces. With the departure of Joy, Harrison takes up the reigns of frustrating bargaining with the Reds.

NEW ITALIAN FASHIONS:
ITALY – Italy’s top designers stage a colorful style show replete with colorful Old World setting, tricky new gowns, and appealing young models. Bidding for place in fashion sun, Rome’s coutouriers come up with some catchy styles with cute gimmicks sure to appeal to feminine hearts.

ATOM BOMB TEST

ENIWETOK A-BOMB BLAST SHOWS THE TERRIBLE DEVASTATION OF BUILDINGS:
ENIWETOK ISLAND – Films just released by the Defense Dept. show the awful effect of an atom bomb blast upon all types of buildings. Right before your eyes, the terrific force of the bomb crumbles concrete structures and whips other buildings into rubble. A terrible lesson for the world.

IKE RETURNS:
WASHINGTON – Ranking army brass and dignitaries turn out to welcome General Eisenhower as he returns from his NATO command. President Truman joins the greeters as the General and Mrs. Eisenhower pay a visit to the White House.

KOJE RIOTS:
KOREA – Red prisoners brazenly parade with dummy guns and taunt their guards, as unrest continues in the compounds. A Canadian brigade arrives to re-inforce the garrison under General Boatner.

QUINTS BIRTHDAY:
CANADA – The Dionne quintuplets theoretically come of age as they reach eighteen. They look very grown up as they graduate from Junior High School.

NATO AIRPOWER:
VIRGINIA – Jet squadrons are formed and made ready for overseas duty to re-inforce the air strength of western Europe. Spectacular maneuvers mark the eve of their departure.

TINIEST PLANE:
CALIFORNIA – Sky baby is only eight feet from wing tip to wing tip but she flies and hits 150 miles an hour.

CANAL DISASTER:
FRANCE – Rupture of a dam on the Yonne river dries up its companion canal and leaves scores of barges high and dry.

AUTO CLASSIC:
INDIANAPOLIS – Troy Ruttman, only 22 cops the Decoration Day event, averaging just under 129 miles per hour to set a new record.

HUCK FINNS:
COLORADO – Hundreds of youngsters re-incarnate Mark Twain’s immortal character as they gather for a fishing contest. And the Becky Thatchers were there, too.

IKE’S HOME-COMING

NOMINATION CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED IN ABILENE:
In his boyhood hometown, Dwight D. Eisenhower, now “Citizen” Eisenhower, his NATO duties behind him, fires the opening gun in his campaign to win the Republican nomination at Chicago. Friends and former neighbors give the retired General a hero’s welcome as he arrives, with a gala street parade held in his honor.

ITALY PARADES ITS MIGHT:
ROME – More than 20,000 troops, joined by tanks and low-flying planes, present a stirring spectacle as Italy stages the greatest military parade since World War II, to mark the sixth anniversary of the Republic. The famed Bersaglieri are in the line of march.

FARM BUILT IN A DAY:
MOSES LAKE, WASH. – A 120-acre farm, complete with farmhouse and cultivated fields, is accomplished in less than a day. An army of workers and farmhands gets the farm ready for the lucky ex-GI who was picked by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

TRUMANS HOST TO VETS:
WASHINGTON – President and Mrs. Truman, and daughter Margaret, are host to hundreds of disabled and crippled veterans, at their annual garden party at the White House. Top military and Cabinet officers are in the receiving line.

LOOK! A HORSE ON SKATES?
INDIAN LAKE, OHIO – You’ve seen everything now – for here’s a horse named Jimmy who does very nicely, thank you, on roller skates. The precocious beast takes himself a merry spin on the roller rink.

ARMY AND NAVY GRADUATION:
WEST POINT AND ANNAPOLIS – Highlights of June Week at our two great service schools the Military and Naval Academies. 517 Cadets receive their commissions at West Point, where it’s “Hats Off” to Future Generals. At Annapolis, pretty Color Girl Helene Kidd presents the colors to the top brigade.

KOJE REDS QUELLED:
KOJE ISLAND – Late films from the prison island of Koje, where communist-led prisoners have long defied UN authority. But under Gen. Boatner’s new “get tough” policy, tanks and troops storm the prison compounds to tear down defiant banners. Meanwhile, the air war continues without let-up, as carrier based craft harass the foe with constant attacks on bridges, highways, railroads and supply dumps.

TRUMAN ATTENDS REUNION:
SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The President puts the cares of office behind him for a moment, and relaxes with his buddies of World War I. He attends a reunion of the 35th Division, to greet his old buddies of Battery D.

TROOPING THE COLOUR:
LONDON – Pomp and pageantry of Empire, in a colorful setting. Queen Elizabeth II reviews the guardsmen during the colorful ceremony, centuries old, “Trooping The Colour.” It’s her first review as Queen, and it’s not without its moment of excitement.

NORMANDY RE-VISITED:
FRANCE – On the eighth anniversary of D-Day on the Normandy beachhead, General Ridgway, new NATO commander and the first U.S. General to parachute into France, visits the beachhead and pays homage to fallen American and Allied heroes who gave their lives in the defeat of Naziism.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS:
LIVERMORE, CALIF. – The Wild West’s biggest jamboree packs ‘em in to see cowboys risking their necks on high-stepping bronchos and rampaging Brahma bulls. The falls come fast and furious, as man takes it on the chin again.

ARMED FORCES APPEAL TO WOMEN:
The Armed Forces appeal to American women of enlistment age to join their sisters already doing necessary and vital work in all branches of our armed forces.

STEEL STRIKE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Truman goes before a joint session of congress to request seizure powers to settle the steel strike. His personal appeal is turned down by a vote of 54 to 26.

KOJE RIOTS:
KOREA – British and American troops move in on rebellious Red prisoners of war for a final round-up. Tear gas and concussion grenades finally subdue the die-hards and their escape tunnels are discovered.

PEARL FARM:
JAPAN – Ambassador Murphy visits the fabulous pearl farm of pearl king Mikimoto to inspect the methods by which cultured pearls are made.

VENEZUELA’S RADIO CITY:
VENEZUELA – At Caracas a new $300,000,000 city rises, containing twenty-four buildings. Through it goes an eight-lane highway.

TOURIST UNIVERSITY:
ITALY – In Rome students from twenty-seven universities go to art classes by scooter. They really get around the glory that was Rome.

MISS UNIVERSE:
Gals from Finland, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Panama and Greece display their charms for the camera in contests to determine who shall represent her country in the Miss Universe contest to be held in Long Beach, California.

ATOMIC SUBMARINE

PRESIDENT OFFICIATES AT KEEL LAYING:
GROTON, CONN. – A new era in undersea warfare is launched, as Pres. Truman arrives for the keel-laying of a submarine to be powered by an atom engine. The “Nautilus” will speed with almost unlimited range on a few ounces of uranium.

KOJE MOP-UP CONTINUES:
KOJE ISLAND, KOREA – American Paratroops move in to help subdue the riotous communist prisoners on Koje Island. Violence is less severe as the work of herding the POW’s into smaller compounds is speeded by Gen. “Get Tough” Boatner.

RAIL STRIKE HITS COMMUTER:
LONG ISLAND – A strike of Long Island Railroad engineers halting travel on the railroad serving hundreds of thousands of commuters causes quick traffic snarls, as buses and highways are jammed.

GUIDED MISSILE HITS REDS:
U.S. & KOREA – A new-type guided bomb, released from a B-29 bomber, is tested in this country before being tried out on the commies. The pin-point accuracy of “Tarzon” is graphically demonstrated on two Korean targets.

PORTLAND ROSE PARADE:
PORTLAND, ORE. – The 44th Annual Rose Festival is climaxed with a spectacular float parade of gala floats festooned with millions of blossoms. Childhood theme is exemplified by winning circus-train float.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

SOCCER THRILLS U.S. FANS:
NEW YORK – 25,000 fans turn out at Yankee Stadium to see England’s two top soccer teams, the Tottenham Hotspurs and the Manchester Uniteds, fight it out on the soccer field.

COLLEGIATE COWBOYS:
PORTLAND, ORE. – A Wild West atmosphere for the Rose Festival. Undergrad rodeo riders compete for laurels at the city’s Rose Festival Rodeo. Bucking Brochos, bulldogging, and bull riding. Class dismissed!

U.S. AND REDS CLASH IN U.N. OVER GERM-WARFARE CHARGES:
NEW YORK – America’s UN delegate-at-large Ernest Gross replies to communist charges of germ-warfare use in Korea with a flat denial, as the June meeting of the Security Council gets off to a heated start, with Russia’s Malik chairman.

HUMAN GUINEA PIG:
JOHNSVILLE, PA. – Scientist at Naval medical test lab go for spin in biggest centrifuge – giant whirling device to test man’s endurance under extreme flight conditions. New clothing also tested to make tomorrow’s airman safe in combat.

GREEK KING VISITS TURKEY:
ISTANBUL – First visit to Turkey of Greek royal family presages growing alliance between two vital members of NATO guarding the eastern Mediterranean. Former enemies, Greece and Turkey are now bulwarks against aggression.

IKE BACKER ASKS HONEST CONVENTION:
PENNSYLVANIA – Senator Duff of Pennsylvania, one of General Eisenhower’s leading backers, airs the squabble in Texas over separate delegations and says the American people want a fair convention, not one rigged by corrupt methods.

WORLD BEAUTIES HERE FOR BEAUTY CROWN:
U.S.A. – A world of beauty from many parts of the world converge on this country, selected to represent their countries in the coming Miss Universe Contest at Long Beach, California. The pretty lassies from many lands will vie for the world beauty crown, and for chance to star in films.

NEWEST SEA QUEEN GETS HARBOR OVATION:
NEW YORK – The S.S. United States puts into New York, her home port, after the first shakedown cruise for America’s newest, biggest, fastest, and most luxurious passenger liner. Vessels crowd the harbor to welcome the new Atlantic blue ribbon contender, in the biggest reception in the port’s history.

SHRINERS’ CONVENTION:
MIAMI – Thirteen thousand Nobles of the Mystic Shrine parade down the Orange Bowl’s Touchdown Lane. Garish garb, grotesque floats, fun and hilarity brighten the evening for hundreds of thousands, kids and grown-ups alike.

TRIBUTE TO WILL ROGERS:
SARANAC, N.Y. – On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital, founded to treat and combat tuberculosis, the Variety Clubs of America unveil a statue of the great humorist.

CHURCH BUILT IN JIG-TIME:
CALIFORNIA – Willing hands make light work, and with the aid of modern methods, an enthusiastic congregation pitches in, erects a new church in a mere five-and-a-half hours.

ARCTIC PREVIEW:
ALASKA – ‘Neath the light of the Midnight Sun, an all-time Alaska first – the world premiere of “The World In His Arms”. Visiting stars light up G.I. eyes for the first showing of this epic drama of pioneer days in our northern territory.
