NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1956 (UE56011)

COLD WAVE GRIPS EUROPE:
One of the most savage winters in two decades brings the mercury to record lows, from Siberia to England. 175 have already perished. In Dutch harbors, ships are literally frozen to their docks, as temperatures plummet to as low as fifty below.

IKE AND MAMIE REGISTER:
GETTYSBURG – Citizens of this historic community register for coming elections, a rather well-known couple among them, and all goes without incident until the questions are asked: “Occupation?” “President.” “Hair?” “Brown, what there is of it.”

WINTER OLYMPICS END:
CORTINA, ITALY – Sensational performances mark the final stages of the Winter Olympics. Skating stars Tenley Albright and Hayes Jenkings, U.S.A., take Gold Medals with sterling displays of grace and precision, while Toni Sailer of Austria electrifies onlookers with a blazing run in the men’s downhill ski event, to sweep the men’s ski events with three gold medals, an incredible achievement.

BRAZIL INAUGURATES NEW PRESIDENT:
BRAZIL – Juscelino Kubitschek takes office as President of Brazil, as cheering throng defy 100-degree temperature in the shade. Vice-President Nixon leads diplomats of 60 nations in extending congratulations.

MILLROSE GAMES:
NEW YORK – Track thrills at the Millrose Games, premiere indoor event on the boards. In the straight-away race and the hurdles, near record performances draw cheers from the 14,000 crowd, with an ovation going to Bob Richards, the “Flying Parson,” as he tops 15 feet in the pole vault for the 89th time.

SLAP-HAPPY SLEIGH RIDE:
AUSTRIA – Tyrolean dare-devils shoot the slopes on bobsleighs – sitting upright on kids’ sleds, and streaking down a regular bobsled run for a hair-raising new sports thrill.

FASHION PARADE FEATURES GLAMOUR GLASSES:
NEW YORK – Eyeglasses with an extra something prove their place in the world of high style. Sequins, spangles, and spectacles are fashionmates, adorning ensembles for every occasion.

NEW GUIDED MISSILES:
AT SEA – The Navy tests its newest guided missiles, even as high-level controversy rages over the “push-button” weapons. Launched from shipboard is the Regulus – looking like a stub-winged pursuit ship. With long range and an atomic warhead, it extends a naval unit’s striking range vastly.

CONNIE MACK DIES:
As America mourns the passing of Connie Mack, “Mr. Baseball,” at the age of 93, we look back through the years to highlight scenes of his unequalled sports career, that spanned the history of the game from its very beginning, and made Cornelius McGillicuddy a sports legend in his own lifetime.

NICE CARNIVAL:
NICE – Carnival comes to Nice, a gargantuan celebration with a typical Gallic flair. Throngs lining the huge parade’s line of march are swept into the merry-making, as the pleasure capital of the French Riviera continues its centuries old tradition of pre-lenten gaiety.

OLYMPIC FINALE:
ITALY – Winter sports with the ultimate in skill and finesse takes the spotlight as the 1956 Winter Olympics draws to a close. Record leaps in the ski-jump are performed with superb form, an ease and grace that makes one of the most exacting sports feats seem one of the easiest.

FORMOSA FROGMEN:
FORMOSA – Chinese Nationalist trainees undergo a rigorous conditioning program under the supervision of U.S. advisors, to qualify for underwater demolition duties. Only 1 in 7 qualify for the hazardous service.

SALUTE TO BENNY GOODMAN:
CHICAGO – Civic officials, social leaders, and stars of the entertainment world gather for a “Salute To Benny Goodman Dinner,” raising funds for the famed settlement, Hull House. Next night, the King of Swing’s 2-day homecoming celebration culminates with the premiere of his film biography, U-I’s “The Benny Goodman Story.” Steve Allen, who portrays the clarinet star, Benny Goodman himself, and a host of notables are on hand for the gala occasion.

PALM SPRINGS’ RODEO:
PALM SPRINGS – A unique and amazing set-to between cowhand and Brahma bull makes Palm Springs’ 16th annual Rodeo more than a thrilling sports event. It’s one of those rare occasions in sports they’ll be talking about for years to come, the toss up of a lifetime.

NIAGARA FALLS STAGES WINTER BEAUTY SHOW:
Weather makes news at Niagara Falls by behaving normally, when freak climactic condition plague the rest of the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a winter beauty show, with ice sheathing trees in carapaces of crystal, and the frozen waters of the Niagara River imparting all the wintry splendor of the old-fashioned winters we seem to see so seldom today.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
U.S. RADIO IN BERLIN celebrates its 10th anniversary. Under-Secretary of State Herbert Hoover Jr. is guest of honor at ceremonies marking the highlight for the American radio station in West Berlin that’s proved a beacon of freedom in the years of the cold war.

QUEEN IN NIGERIA – Queen Elizabeth continues her tour of Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest British Crown Colonies, standing on the verge of self-rule. During the stay, one of the largest tin mines in the world is visited.

FURNITURE IN MID-AIR makes news in home styles. An Oakland, California home achieves the ultimate in modernism, with not a single piece resting on the floor. Everything is suspended from the ceiling – even the fireplace. It’s no joke – it’s an actual home.

YEAR OF THE MONKEY, 4654 by the traditional Chinese calendar, is welcomed in by San Francisco’s Chinatown with the choice of a Queen for the New Year. She’s chosen in a unique way, that reflects true Oriental wisdom. You can’t argue with the judge.

CASHMERE FASHIONS:
NEW YORK – The long and short of the fashion picture, in a special collection of resort and spring coats, presented by slim gals in a setting of sleek sports cars. Spring is in the air, even though it’s Winter outside.

GASPARILLA RAIDS TAMPA, bringing back the lusty merriment of buccaneer days, to sweep in a week of merry-making with his pirate crew. It’s the Florida city’s annual carnival, one of the country’s most famous, and spectacular.

SPORTS:

GOLDEN GLOVES QUARTER FINALS – A quarter-final card full of action and excitement, as young amateurs slug away in hopes of ultimate victory. Plenty of fistic fireworks as lightweights and heavyweights hit the canvas.

WINTER SPORTS CAR RALLY at Franconia, New Hampshire, features hot cars on a cold track. An array of streamlined speedsters whip around a snow covered track in the Sports Car Club of America’s annual winter meet.

DOCTORS OKAY IKE FOR 2D TERM:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower undergoes an exhaustive physical checkup by his team of doctors, after which Dr. Paul Dudley White reports on the President’s condition, as fit for 5 to 10 years of normal activity.

EUROPE ICEBOUND:
Europe’s record cold wave continues, reaching a new extreme. Major cities of the continent are shrouded in snow, and waterways frozen, as temperatures plummet. A heavy toll is taken – nearly 600 have died so far as a result.

TOY POODLE WESTMINSTER WINNER:
NEW YORK CITY – At the Westminster Kennel Club Show, canine blue-bloods battle it out for the highest honor of dogdom. The pick of the six group winners, each a magnificent specimen, is a toy poodle, Wilber White Swan, the first toy to win the coveted Blue Ribbon.

INFLATED AIRPLANE:
AKRON, OHIO – Presenting, a rubber airplane. Deflated, it folds small enough to fit in the trunk of a car, light enough for one man to handle. Inflate it, and she’s airworthy.

PHOTOPLAY AWARDS:
BEVERLY HILLS, CAL. – At the annual Photo-play gold Medal Award Dinner, George Nader, star of U-I’s forthcoming “Away All Boats,” is named “Most Promising Actor of 1956.”

SPLENDOR IN OLD VIENNA:
AUSTRIA – The glories that were old Vienna return as the regal Opera Ball is held for the first time in 17 years. Vienna regains her fabled grace and glory to the strains of the waltz, a truly splendid spectacle.

BROTHERHOOD APPEAL:
Frank Sinatra appeals for observance of National Brotherhood Week.

MARDI GRAS GAIETY RULES NEW ORLEANS:
Mardi Gras reverlers throng streets in a final fling before the Lenten Season, one of America’s gayest, most colorful carnivals.

REDS INFLATE BALLOON ISSUE:
MOSCOW – American-launched meteorological balloons are exhibited to the press by Soviet authorities to bolster the Red claim that the balloons were intended for espionage purposes – but all the exhibit displays is standard weather equipment. Hot air makes news again in Moscow.

UNIVERSITY HONORS HERO PARSON:
OHIO – At 121st anniversary ceremonies, Marietta College confers an honorary degree on a famous native son, Col. Dean Hess, the “Flying Parson,” who left the pulpit to fly combat missions in World War II and Korea, and later dedicate his life to children – a thrilling career to be brought to the screen by U-I’s forthcoming film “Battle Hymn.”

FASHION PARADE:
NEW YORK CITY – Rayon takes the fashion spotlight, in a wide range of new fabrics ranging from the simple, chic and stylish, to the down right sumptuous. New styles for every occasion, from basic afternoon apparel to a stunning evening gown that surpasses description.

SPORTS:

CAROL HEISS wins the world’s figure skating championship at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, with a brilliant display of grace and precision, that brings her first victory over arch-rival Tenley Albright.

SKIING at Leavenworth, Washington, the 25th anniversary meet of the Leavenworth Ski Club, with the Northwest’s top ski-birds taking off in the teeth of a blizzard, which cuts the distances but not the thrills.

NASHUA enters the million-dollar winner bracket in his first race since the death of owner William Woodward Jr., winning the Widener Handicap at Hialeah in a thrilling photo-finish.

GOLF:

DIAMOND STARS take to the links at Miami. Time out from spring training for Alvin Dark, Mickey Mantle, and Joe Black, among others taking part in the Baseball Players Gold Tournament. The winner, Lou Kretlow.

IKE enjoys his first day of gold since his heart attack, at Thomasville, Georgia. The weather smiles, and so does the President, despite some agonizingly near-miss putts. Ike’s score? Over par, but he doesn’t mind a bit.

ARCTIC DEFENSE TEST:
ALASKA – 10,000 men take part in Operation Mooschorn, as the Army tests its ability to survive and to fight along America’s far northern frontier. On a footing of 40 inches of snow, battling 60 mph gales, men and machines win the battle with nature, and stand ready for human foes.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
U.S. ARMS TO SPAIN – Tanks and other military equipment arrive in Spain as the U.S. keeps its part of the bargain that gives the use of Spanish bases to the Navy.

BILLY GRAHAM IN JAPAN – In Tokyo, a capacity crowd of 30,000 throngs to see evangelist Billy Graham. Americans and Japanese mingle in the vast audience.

TRAIN WRECK – 6 are killed, and 90 injured, when the Washington-New York flyer jumps the tracks near Severn, Md., at an 80 mph speed. Rescuers work for hours to cut the dead and wounded free of the twisted wreck.

DELAYED XMAS – Yuba City, California, celebrates Christmas late. The festive season was put off when last winter’s record floods devastated the town. Now, rebuilding begun, Yuba City can afford merriment.

BEACH FASHIONS:
NEW YORK – A swanky setting on Long Island’s south shore for cashmere blend beach fashions inspired by the film musical “The Benny Goodman Story.” A fashion touch for every fashion need during a season at the sea.

SPORTS:

AUSTRIAN SKI CHAMPS show the stellar form that won this tiny nation 2nd place in the winter Olympics. Blazing speed marks the slalom events, while ski birds fly high and far in the jumps.

DAYTONA RACES – Stock car races at Daytona Beach, Fla., reach a sizzling climax with the 160 mile Circuit Championship, a grueling 30 lap test of men and machines. At speeds of over 100 mph, there are spectacular skids and flip-overs, but no fatalities in the motor event of the season.

Ike announces to the nation the decision that has dominated political speculation for months. He’ll run – and leave the final judgment on his fitness to his party and to the people.

TRAIN WRECK:
SWAMPSCOTT, MASS. – 13 die, 100 are injured in a rear end rail collision at the height of a blinding snowstorm. Cars are crushed and twisted, one split open like a melon, in the 3rd major wreck within 2 months.

LID’S OFF ON BASEBALL’S SPRING GRIND:
TUCSON, ARIZ. – First scenes of spring training, with the Cleveland Indians. Under the sharp eye of Manager Al Lopez, the Tribe begins flexing its muscles and sharpening up for this season’s pennant race.

POPE PIUS XII celebrates his 80th birthday with a ceremony unique in Vatican annals as children of 40 nations gather to pay their tribute to the Pontiff.

NEW LORD BISHOP OF LONDON is enthroned in solemn ceremonies at historic St. Paul’s Cathedral, in London, with all the pomp and tradition of a rich history.

MOTION PICTURE AWARD;
HOLLYWOOD – Milton Rackmil, President of Universal-International Studios, receives the Annual Look Award for leadership in studio progress.

NATIONAL BOWLING CONGRESS:
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – 6,000 teams of keglers from all over the world gather for the biggest event in bowling, with half a million dollars in prizes, to “strike” it rich.

ONE MAN “ROTOCYCLE”:
LONG ISLAND – The newest and smallest helicopter yet – the one-man rotocycle, powered by a 40 hp putt-putt, and nimble as they come.

IKE SAYS HE’LL QUIT IF HEALTH DECLINES:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Highlights of the President Press Conference: Ike says he’ll quit if his health declines to the point where he’s unable to carry the burden of office. Asked about the Vice-President, Ike says he’s only asked Nixon to make his own decision.

KOREAN TOTS ARRIVE FOR MOVIE ROLE:
25 Korean war orphans arrive on the West Coast, and a touching reunion ensues, as they’re met by Col. Dean Hess, “the Flying Parson,” who saved their lives during the Korean conflict. They’ll play themselves in U-I’s forthcoming “Battle Hymn,” the dramatic film story of Col. Hess’ career as parson and combat air ace.

DULLES AT SEATO MEETING:
PAKISTAN – Secretary of State Dulles arrives for South-East Asia Treaty Organization meetings, as Asian affairs reach a critical point of tension.

KOREAN SNOWSLIDES:
KOREA – A series of avalanches buries scores of villages in South Korea, taking over 100 lives, and isolating 20,000 troops. Bitter winter disaster.

SPORTS:
OREGON – Bantum battlers fight it out in man-size bouts sponsored by Portland’s Columbia Athletic Club. Man-sized shorts and billowy gloves don’t slow these atom-sized high-powered flyweights down a bit.

PORPOISE BASKETBALL:
MARINELAND, FLA. – Aquatic athletics adds up to something new in sports. There’s nothing fishy about it, even though Splash, a porpoise, shows amazing all-around talent, sinking a basket neat as you please.
