NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1956 (UE56092)

UN AT SUEZ
In New York, U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold boards a plane for Cairo, where he will personally supervise operations of the international U.N. Police Force. In Port Said, the wreckage of war awaits him, in the wake of the Anglo-French amphibious assault. Still blocked by sunken ships in the key Suez Canal – waiting for uncertain peace.

STRIKE IT LOVELY:
In Los Angeles, thirty beautiful contestants vie for prizes that include a U-I contract. The winner, shapely Phyllis McLeen will tour to publicize the forthcoming film “Written On The Wind.”

GREEK PRIME MINISTER:
Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis arrives in New York, where he’s greeted by representatives of Greek-American organizations. He’ll raise the question of Cyprus at the U.N.

ICEBREAKER SAILS:
In Seattle, the Coast Guard icebreaker sails for a tour of duty in the Antarctic, part of the massive “Operation Deep-freeze II.” Lingering farewells are the order of the day for crewmen.

MAMIE’S BIRTHDAY:
In Washington, D.C., the first lady celebrates her 60th birthday. As all the nation joins in greetings on the occasion, she is presented with a portrait of herself in her first inaugural gown.

SKI PATROL SAVES AVALANCHE “VICTIM”:
In the Canadian Rockies, ski patrol trainees stage the rescue of an avalanche victim. A buried volunteer is located by probing the snow covered area, and rushed to hospital care via toboggan.

SPORTS:
GIANTS TOP CARDS – In Yankee Stadium, the pro football Giants tackle the Chicago Cardinals for first place in the pro’s eastern division. The hard-hitting, driving Giants carry the day in a thrilling contest, with a clear cut 23-10 triumph.

PATTERSON, MOORE, TRAIN – Youth v. age for the heavyweight crown. Scrappy young hopeful Floyd Patterson and wily veteran Archie Moore train for their coming bout, which will determine possession of Rocky Marciano’s vacated heavyweight crown.

UN TROOPS TAKE SUEZ POSTS:
The long awaited arrival of United Nations police troops injects a new note into the trouble spot of the Middle East. Truce observers keep a close eye for violations of the cease fire in Egypt as the UN forces, wearing distinguishing arm bands, take up their posts.

HUNGARIAN REFUGEES WELCOMED:
THE NETHERLANDS – Like every country in the free world, Holland opens its doors and hearts of refugees fleeing from their ravaged homeland. 1300 will be offered new lives, and new hope, in little Holland.

FAMED JURIST IS HONORED:
NEW YORK – The late Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, a founder of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, is honored at a ceremony establishing “Charles Evans Hughes Hall” in the home of the Brotherhood.

MISSILE-LAUNCHING SUBMARINE:
AT SEA – Two key instruments of modern war, guided missiles and long-range subs, are joined in a new weapons system. The “Regulus” missile extends the Navy’s striking potential far inland, anywhere in the world.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!
SEATTLE – The big northwest city once again is first to get Santa off to an early start. The season is officially underway as thousands turn out to watch a spectacular parade of storybook balloons, and of course, Santa!

THE PIGSKIN PARADE:
TENNESSEE-MISSISSIPPI – Knoxville – Clinching a bowl bid and retaining its ranking as one of the nation’s top teams, Tennessee turns back Mississippi after trailing early in the game to sin, 27-7.

YALE-PRINCETON – New Haven – The Yale Bowl is jammed as the Elis live up to their potential, administering a startling 42-20 pounding to Princeton. Long runs, nifty aerials, and new plays enliven the classic Ivy League game.

U.S. WELCOMES FIRST HUNGARIAN REFUGEES:
NEW JERSEY – The first 60 of 5,000 Hungarian refugees admitted to the U.S. arrives at McGuire Air Force base. After welcome ceremonies, they’re transported to Camp Kilmer, newly converted to a reception center, where hundreds of nearby residents greet them – modern pilgrims from tyranny, arriving as a free America celebrates Thanksgiving.

U.N. UNITS TAKE POSTS IN SUEZ:
EGYPT – United Nations contingents take up the police job in the Suez Canal zone, hampered in their duties pending withdrawal of British and French forces. On the Israel front, Arab refugees by the thousands stream out of the Sinai peninsula.

EMPERORS MEET:
TOKYO – Two emperors meet – descendants of the world’s oldest imperial dynasties. Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is greeted by Japan’s Hirohito as the African ruler passes through on his world trip.

DOCK STRIKE:
60,000 longshoremen strike during contract negotiations in New York, paralyzing the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Hundreds of ships are trapped in port, their cargoes unloaded, while mountains of goods clog the piers.

FASHION PARAD:
NEW YORK CITY – Leading American designers pool their talents to present a cosmopolitan wardrobe for metropolitan mademoiselles. New and chic from top to toe, with a new shape emphasizing the feminine silhouette.

PRO FOOTBALL – REDSKINS TOPPLE GIANTS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A stunning upset in pro football, as the Washington Redskins upset the Eastern Conference leaders with a dazzling aerial attack. Final score, a decisive 33-7.

GRUENTHER HONORED:
PARIS – A final review is held for Gen. Alfred Gruenther, retiring chief of NATO forces. As his successor, Gen. Lauris Norstad looks on, Premier Guy Mollet awards him the French Military Medal.

HUNGARY EXODUS CONTINUES:
Dramatic scenes on the Austrian border as Hungarian refugees cross to freedom. Under the cloak of darkness, they inch across a log spanning a 14 foot canal. In early dawn, they dash across marshland to safety in Austria. At the rate of 6,000 a day, they arrive to swamp relief facilities.

FREAK BLIZZARD:
Parts of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio are virtually paralyzed by early storms. Whole communities are isolated. Emergency stores are carried to East Springfield, Pa., by helicopter.

STRONG-ARM MAN:
Tonisko the strong man stars in a Spanish circus, performing amazing feats of strength and balance with one arm, high over the ring. A breath-taking, unbelievable performance.

DUTCH ST. NICK:
In Amsterdam, Saint Nick makes his traditional entry into the city on horseback, signaling the start of one of the national feast days for half a million children and parents.

U.N. TROOPS:
U.N. Troops arrive in Port Said, Egypt, and are virtually mobbed by unruly demonstrators – whose fervent greetings nearly boil over into a riot. British tummies, soon to evacuate, restore order with swinging rifle butts.

FOOTBALL:
TENNESSEE 20, KENTUCKY 7 – The unbeaten Volunteers of Tennessee fight their way from behind in the fourth quarter to preserve their #2 national ranking. All American Johnny Majors shines in the blazing Volunteer attack.

OREGON STATE 14, OREGON 14 – Rose Bowl bound, Oregon State’s Beavers clash with Oregon’s hard fighting Ducks – the state’s big game of the year. And the mighty Beavers are held to a draw in an action packed grid thriller.

BRITISH START SUEZ WITHDRAWAL:
British warships enter partly-cleared Port Said harbor, and thte withdrawal of British troops begins. The United Nations’ police force, still growing in number, makes its influence felt to relax tensions. Meanwhile, Israel displays large stocks of modern Russian arms captured from Egypt.

PARIS AIR CRASH:
Twisted fire-blackened wreckage marks the crash of a New York bound airliner, seconds after take-off, in which at least 33 perished.

ITALY AMBASSADOR:
San Francisco businessman James D. Zellerbach receives word of his appointment by the President as Ambassador to Italy. He’ll succeed Clare Boothe Luce.

IKE’S VACATION:
President and Mrs. Eisenhower arrive in Augusta, Ga., for a short vacation. Ike’s host – chairman of the Augusta Country Club, his favorite golfing retreat.

‘CARGO COPTER:
At Quantico, Va., the Marines show off a new twin-engine cargo helicopter – capable of carrying 26 fully equipped Marines or a jeep and light artillery piece.

STOCK SHOW:
Prize beef on the hoof at the International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago. The Grand Champion is Troubador, a ?-ton shorthorn calf. Winners of the 4-H Clubs Health Program receive their awards, too.

SPORTS

BOAT SHOW:
In Seattle, a multi-million dollar display of the latest in power plants and pleasure plants regales sea-going citizens. Everything from plaid water-skis to deluxe cruisers.

IOWA vs. NOTRE DAME:
Iowa’s Rose Bowl bound Hawkeyes wind up their best season in years with a smashing assault on the Irish. Quarterback Ken Ploen shines as they romp to a 48-8 win.

GIANTS vs. BEARS:
New York’s pro grid Giants clash with the Monsters of Midway in Yankee Stadium, and it’s a thriller long to be remembered. As the Bears roar back against a 17-0 deficit to tie the game the highlight play is End Harlon Hill’s fantastic show string catch, of a 69 yard pass.

FRANCE WELCOMES 1200 HUNGARIANS:
As the number of Hungarians who have fled Red terror mounts past the 100,000 mark, twelve hundred refugees arrive in France – the first to be welcomed for resettlement here.

IKE AND DULLES CONFER:
In Augusta, Ga., President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles attend Sabbath services together, going on to confer on the troubled world situation.

INDIA RAIL DISASTER:
One of the worst rail disasters in India’s history. Over 160 die, hundreds more are injured, when 7 cars are telescoped into a ditch by the collapse of a flood-weakened embankment.

SPINNING REEL TARGET:
Over California, a jet interceptor shows a new aerial low-target designed for super-sonic target practice. Resembling a fishing plug, it’s let out at the end of a 5-mile line.

CHURCHILL’S BIRTHDAY:
In England, Sir Winston Churchill celebrates his 82nd birthday. As greetings pour in from all over the world, he marks the event with his grandchildren, and a huge cake.

TRUCK RODEO:
On a Detroit testing ground, ace stunt drivers stage a road rodeo with stock trucks instead of stock cars – soaring high over another truck criss-crossing below, and giving a close shave to a daring clown.

ARMY, NAVY, BATTLE TO 7-7 GRID TIE:
Traditional pageantry ushers in the annual Army-Navy gridiron thriller. 102,000 in Philadelphia’s Municipal Stadium, including high Service officials, see Midshipmen and Cadets battle to a stand-off, with the biggest thrill in the closing seconds as Navy battles to the tying TD – is called back on a penalty – and does it again.!

NEW NATO CHIEF:
Naples welcomes General Lauris Norstad, newly named commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as the western alliance meets in an attempt to heal the rift caused by the Anglo-French invasion of Egypt. Gen. Norstad reviews international contingents of NATO forces.

KOREAN TURNCOATS:
Two U.S. GI’s who defected to Red China return, homesick and weary. From Hong Kong, where they cross the border, they’re flown to Seattle, where newsmen interview them.

PIER FIRE PROBED:
Investigators search the debris of Brooklyn’s devastating pier fire and explosion, which killed 10, injured 400, and did $15 million damage, for the full story of the blast, including an explanation for the presence on the pier of 18 tons of explosive detonator, without Fire Department authorization.

U.N. TROOPS IN EGYPT:
New contingents arrive as the build-up of U.N. troops continues rapidly in Egypt. The force numbers 2500, as British forces begin evacuation over an estimated 2-week period.

PARIS XMAS:
Paris, City of Light, is a city of light hearts and shops full of toys as the Yule season nears. French youngsters tour the shops and see all the newest toys, including handsomely ferocious caged Tigers.

FASHION PARADE:
Sunny styles from southern isles. An eye-catching parade of chic beach and patio wear from the Bahamas. Things are definitely on the bright side as fashion follows the sun. Big hats, and lots of decoration are twin themes.

SPORTS

GIANTS v. REDSKINS:
At Yankee Stadium, the pro grid Giants avenge a previous drubbing by the Redskins. New York’s Frank Gifford plays like Frank Merriwell, starring repeatedly as he notches three touchdowns, leading the team to a 28-14 win.

SPEED-BOAT TRIAL:
On Lake Washington, famed speedboat Shanty the First, skippered by Air Force Colonel Russ Schleeh, sets out to assault the unlimited hydroplane speed mark for the mile.

SUEZ SALVAGE BEGINS:
Tensions in Egypt ease as reinforced U.N. troops occupy Suez in the wake of evacuating British forces. Divers and salvage crews begin the long task of clearing the blocked canal.

’57 AUTO SHOW:
In New York, the first National Auto Show in 16 years opens – a gala, glittering spectacle featuring 124 new models – long, low and dramatic.

DEFENSE BUDGET TALKS at the Winter White House in Augusta, Ga. Defense Secretary Wilson urges a $2 billion increase as Ike meets with Administration leaders.

ISRAEL WAR BOND DRIVE is launched in Tel Aviv by Prime Minister Ben Gurion, seeking $20 million, to meet costs of Israel’s recent Sinai desert campaign.

BABY GIRAFFE BOWS in the London Zoo. Only two weeks old, little Terry sticks a long but timid neck out into the world.

OLYMPIC STARS HOME. Arriving at Los Angeles, the first of America’s Olympic contenders to return from Games at Melbourne.

PRO FOOTBALL – BROWNS V GIANTS:
At Yankee Stadium, heavy snows almost blot out a gridiron thriller as the Cleveland Browns defy weather with an aerial attack that snows under the Giants, 24-7, and their hopes for a conference title.

U.N. WALK-OUT BY HUNGARIAN PUPPETS:
After repeated denunciations of the Hungarian puppet regime by the U.N. General Assembly, Imre Horvath, Hungary’s foreign minister, leads his delegation an angry walk-out. The Assembly goes on to vote a sweeping condemnation of Russian brutality in Hungary.

SPACE-TRAVEL PREVIEW, as the first man made satellite takes form at a Washington, D.C. research center. Also shown, a model of the rocket which will carry it aloft.

“BATTLE HYMN” PREVIEWED in New York. Industry leaders, celebrities, Air Force officials, and Korean representatives are on hand for the showing of the dramatic, inspiring film story of Col. Dean Hess – preacher, soldier and humanitarian.

REFUGEES WELCOMED to a new life. 100 Hungarians arrive in California for resettlement, and are greeted by Gov. and Mrs. Knight, and throngs of well-wishers, in moving scenes.

GOOD NEIGHBORS GOLD at Augusta’s National Gold Club. President Eisenhower is joined by Prime Minister St. Laurent for a friendly round on the links. Team score – even.

FASHIONS IN LEATHER:
Leather comes into its own, style-wise, for the life of leisure. From boots to hood – including skirts, halters blouses, and what-have-you, it’s at home everywhere in the wardrobe.

SPORTS:
BEARS MAUL CARDINALS at Wrigley Field. An all-Chicago pro gridiron show, rough, tough and thrilling. Two Cardinal touchdown runs are cancelled because of penalties, and near riot breaks out on the field at game’s end!

HEISMAN TROPHY, football’s greatest individual award, is presented to Notre Dame’s quarterback Paul Hornung, in ceremonies at New York’s Downtown Athletic Club.
