REDS CUT GERMANY FORCES:
Western military observers witness a token withdrawal of Red forces from East Germany, part of an announced over-all reduction of 1,200,000 men. 89 obsolete propellor-driven planes and the first contingents of 50,000 depart as Red photographers swarm over the scene.

EGYPT PARADES RED ARMS:
Russia’s new Foreign Minister, Dmitri Shepilov, is a pleased onlooker as Egypt closes a 3 day celebration of the withdrawal of the last British troops from Suez with an impressive parade of newly acquired Red Tanks, guns and other war material, presided over by newly-elected President Nasser.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
“AWAY ALL BOATS,” U-I’s new Technicolor, VistaVision saga of the amphibious war in the Pacific is officially cited by the U.S. Navy in a special preview at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

NEW “HEAT SUIT,” made of light-weight aluminum coated fabric, enables its wearer to stand at ease in a 1200 degree industrial furnace, a temperature higher than any previous similar garb has withstood.

FOR MEN ONLY. Nationally syndicated columnist Bert Bachrach imparts some valuable tips to the men, on good grooming. Advice from an expert, to meet a pressing need.

PARIS, FRANCE – 3,000 university students riot in the Latin Quarter, protesting conscription laws calling up more reservists for Algerian service. Gendarmes swinging capes restore order after bitter fracas.

FILM EXECS HOSPITAL TOUR:
SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – The annual directors meeting and inspection tour of the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital brings together leaders of the amusement industry whose humanitarian efforts are known to all.

SERENADE FOR “IKE”:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – An Army Band serenades President Eisenhower in his Walter Reed Hospital room, and a smiling “Ike” waves to the crowd below his window. Long lens cameras show the President enjoying his concert.

LIONS ON PARADE:
MIAMI, FLA. – The Lions Club International holds its annual convention parade in the resort city, with colorful floats from many states delighting huge throngs lining the parade route.

THE FASHION PARADE:
NEW YORK – The golden era of millinery takes a bow, with the latest in bonnets on display for fashion industry leaders. Pretty models show new creations for Fall, with the accent on taller and wider crowns enhancing the wearer’s beauty.

ROLLER-SKATING CHAMP:
ENCINO, CALIF. – A birthday party for Clikuita the Chimp, aged four, enjoys a roller-skating round of fun with his guests. The versatile birthday boy shows how handy are his long arms.

128 DIE IN WORST AIR DISASTER:
Two oil blackened spots on the sides of awesome Grand Canyon mark the spots where 128 met death in the crashes of two airliners a scant mile apart. A midair collision of the two giant transports is presumed to have caused the worst commercial air disaster in the history of commercial aviation.

IKE LEAVES HOSPITAL:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Wan but smiling jovially, President Eisenhower leaves Walter Reed Hospital after more than three weeks, during which he underwent major surgery. A radiant first lady accompanies him to his Gettysburg farm where he will convalesce.

GIRL SCOUTS MEET:
MICHIGAN – Girl Scouts from every state and territory meet in a mammoth gathering. Five thousand teenagers consume vast quantities of food and find out how young America from all portions of the country live.

STEEL MAKING STOPS:
All over the nation, steel mills grind to a halt as furnaces are banked 650,000 steel workers walk off the job, following a breakdown in wage negotiations.

SPORTS:
LOS ANGELES – Three new records are set and ten Olympic marks are broken as America’s top field and track athletes meet in the final Olympic trials. Highlight of the event comes when Charlie Dumas, of Compton college tops seven feet in the high jump for the first time in history.

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – A $71,000 purse at Roosevelt Raceway brings out trotting stars for the Messenger Stake. Belle Acton’s rhythmic stride brings her home a handy winner.

DOMINION DAY:
CANADA – This year, Canada marks ninety years as a nation with a graphic record on the way to prosperity. It is a panorama of peace and progress.

TWINING WARNS OF RED AIR STRENGTH:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Air Force Chief of Staff General Nathan Twining returns from his visit to Moscow, and comments to the press on his observations of the Soviet air armada. After giving his overall impressions to the press, he warns that numerically the Red air force equals our own – and is rapidly bridging the gap in quality.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
CATTLE FOR FORMOSA, donated by breeders of several Western States to aid development of the island, is shipped from San Francisco.

HERBERT HOOVER breaks ground for a $100,000 unit of the Boys Clubs of America in San Mateo, at a ceremony attended by every youngster in town.

TEA FOR CHIMPS at the London Zoo. People look on, funnier than anything, as the simian clowns do it deadpan for once, sitting through tiffin with magnificent aplomb.

PRECISION FLYING by the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s famed aerobatic team, is more spectacular than ever. The crack flight group performs their hair-raising stunts in new Supersabre jets, at sonic speeds.

SPORTS:
SWAPS WINS AMERICAN HANDICAP, for $103,000 at Hollywood Park. The sensational thoroughbred romps home ahead of the field in a blazing performance that nails down the fourth successive track record!

SHOOTING THE RAPIDS, with Bavarian mountain streams more turbulent than ever, swollen with melting snows from the surrounding mountains. Frail kayaks and rugged oarsmen challenge the roaring stream in a thrilling contest.

SCORES DEAD IN GREEK DISASTER:
In minutes of pre-dawn terror, an earthquake with the force of 10 A-bombs and 13-foot tidal waves smash the Aegean islands of Greece, leveling thousands of homes, injuring hundreds, and killing scores. One of the area’s worst natural disaster in recent history.

“NO-HANDS HELICOPTER” is tested at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. A remote controlled whirly-bird that can be put through its paces out of the pilot’s visual range – a new robot workhorse of the air.

AIR AGE AND OLD WEST meet as Abilene, Texas celebrates its 75th anniversary. Old Timer’s Day is coupled with dedication of a new Strategic Air Command base – and a spectacular jet air show.

HELI-BOAT SPORT at Cypress Gardens, Florida, a startling new aqua thrill. A light weight bull with a helicopter type propellor, towed by a powerboat, soars high above the water, letting the proud inventor look down on his water-skiing friends.

JAPANESE FASHIONS FOR U.S.:
The first collection of western fashions designed and crafted in the Orient takes a bow in New York. Basically American dresses and hats with definitely exotic style elements, for the true originality and attractiveness that comes from a fusion of East and West.

SPORTS:
TIMBER CARNIVAL at Albany, Oregon, heart of Pacific Northwest’s timber country. Brawny woodsmen take a busman’s holiday for an exciting round of log-rolling, axe-throwing, and similar Paul Bunyan-esque exploits, climaxed with a speed climb, up and down a bare hundred foot spar, a real chiller-diller.

WOMEN’S A.A.U. SWIMMING championships at Tyler, Texas, thrilling competition that reaches its peak in the 100 meter butterfly race, won by Shelley Mann of Washington, setting a new world’s record. Karen Cone sets a new U.S. mark in the 100 meter backstroke.

IKE TO RUN:
The President announces his decision to run for re-election to G.O.P. leaders during a conference at Gettysburg College, and the Republican bandwagon starts to roll, with the return of Vice-President and Mrs. Nixon from their round the world tour, and the New York launching of one of six official campaign units.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
BIG JETS ON SMALL CARRIERS – The Navy operates its newest, hottest, jets from an Essex-class carrier – a spectacular air exhibition that reveals how new landing techniques enable smaller carriers to handle jets designed for Forrestal-class super carriers.

ALPINE ‘COPTER RESCUE – The helicopters’ ability to eliminate the inaccessible makes it a guardian angel to injured climbers atop Mont Branc, airlifting them down from a lofty hostel.

SHRINERS PARADE in Detroit, 10,000 strong. Harold Lloyd, Mayor Cobo of the Motor City, and Governor Mennen Williams are among the V.I.P.’s but the antics and intricate drill patterns make the show.

JUGGERNAUT FESTIVAL – Half a million Hindu pilgrims gather for the festival of Jagannatha – Hindu Lord of the World, known to us as Juggernaut. The enormous shrine is pulled through the thronged streets on a cart of many wheels – an inexorable force that gives meaning to the word.

VENEZUELA INDEPENDENCE WEEK – Venezuela celebrates its 145th year of independence with a week of parades, sports exhibitions and other observances that mark the red-letter event for the thriving nation.

SPORTS:
CALGARY STAMPEDE – Canada’s great annual salute to the Wild West is bigger and more exciting than ever, with broncos and bulls fiercer and ornerier than even the toughest rodeo hand cares for. But it makes a wonderful show – and no one’s really hurt – but what a shake-up!

PLAYER OF THE DECADE – Stan “The Man” Musial receives a grandfather clock trophy to mark his selection as Baseball’s Player of the Decade. Bob Feller makes the presentation in Washington, D.C.

FREEDOM FLIGHT ACROSS IRON CURTAIN:
Seven Hungarian students seize a Red airliner in a savage mid-air battle with crewmen, passengers, and security police, landing on a NATO airstrip in west Germany for a successful conclusion to one of the most daring coups in years of struggle against Red oppression.

FIRE CRIPPLES N.Y. SUBWAYS:
Raging for 48 hours, New York’s worst fire in thirty-four years razes Wanamaker’s Department Store building, a 94-year landmark. 150 out of 600 firemen were felled while fighting the blaze, which took millions of gallons of water – a torrent which washed out a subway station, crippling service on the city’s East Side for at least two weeks.

MISS UNIVERSE contest gets under way with a gala parade in Long Beach, Cal. Glamorous contestants typifying every type of beauty, representing every clime, take part in the fabulous 105-unit procession.

DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY for Heer and Vrow Reeffer, celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary in Holland. 161 direct descendants, 60 grandchildren, and ninety-five great grandchildren, and six children take part in the unique celebration.

SPORTS:
BULL RUN – Havoc in the streets of Pamplona, Spain, as the bulls are turned loose to celebrate the feast day of San Fermin with traditional annual mayhem, the “folding of the bulls.” It’s crazy, but it must be fun – they keep doing it year after year.

RENO RODEO honors Jimmy Stewart, no stranger to boots and saddle, for his role in the forthcoming movie “Night Passage” - and to make the occasion doubly memorable, turns loose some of the roughest orneriest broncs and steers ever, a slam-bang exciting time for all.

NASHUA ROMPS to the fore in the Monmouth Handicap, at a mile and a quarter. 38,000 rain defying fans see turfdom’s leading money winner streak to his easiest victory in a blazing display of turf power.

BUMPER GRAIN CROP FLOODS ELEVATORS:
CHICAGO – A bumper wheat crop overwhelms storage facilities, pouring in a rate of almost a million bushels a day. This year’s 900 million bushel harvest – six bushels for every American – will add to the surpluses that now burden storage facilities, and trouble economists – in addition to spelling overtime for the hard pressed elevators.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
MINE-SWEEPER – At San Francisco, a brand new mine-sweeper, latest of its type, is transferred to the Japanese defense forces. In ship-board ceremonies, the Stars and Stripes is replaced by the Rising Sun.

BRONZE BUILDING – Bronze, man’s oldest alloy, receives the ultimate test as a structural material for a planned new skyscraper. An airplane engine and a water spray give a realistic simulation of hurricane conditions.

KING FEISAL of Iraq arrives in London. He’s extended a royal welcome by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, as he begins a 5 day state visit, of special significance to Britain for Iraq’s role in the Bagdad Pact.

JET TANKER PLANE – At Renton, Washington, the first of a new series of 4-jet tanker planes, designed for mid-air refueling of Strategic Air Command craft, rolls off the assembly line.

MISS UNIVERSE contestants visit the Universal-International studios. Busloads of beauty converge on the land of movie make believe, greeted by cinema celebrities including Fred MacMurray and Jeff Chandler, star of “Away All Boats.”

GAS EXPLOSION – A gas explosion caused by an attempted suicide flattens three homes in Long Island City, New York, killing a 6 week old baby girl, and seriously injuring 5, including the would be suicide.

IKE AT PANAMA MEETING:
President Eisenhower meets with the heads of 17 American nations in Panama, a two day Presidents’ Conference that culminates with a five-point declaration of common ideals reaffirming the unity of the Western Hemisphere, and highlighted by Ike’s proposal of an inter-American atom development plan.

OPERATION ALERT:
A full-scale mock air raid tests the nation’s civil defense preparedness. 75 key targets are hit by mock H-bomb raids, as the populace takes shelter. Estimates of defense effectiveness are secret except for New York City – where it is estimated over 4 million would have died in a real raid.

JAPAN ENTERS AIR AGE:
Japan’s small air defense force is catapulted into the air age with the arrival of American F-86 Sabrejets. Assembled by U.S. and Japanese technicians, they carry the Nipponese insignia aloft, an important new alignment of power in the Orient.

IOWA COED NAMED “MISS UNIVERSE”:
An Iowa coed, 20 year old Carol Morris is chosen Miss Universe from seventeen of the world’s most beautiful girls, in Long Beach, California.

MOTOR MANIA:
Motorcycles and auto daredevils stage a hair-raising show in Chicago. The sensational group has just returned from a 76-city tour of Europe, and they’re the wildest seen in these parts for some time.

MIRACLE AT SEA:
2,500 escape death, when the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria is sunk off Nantucket in a collision with the Swedish liner Stockholm. All aboard the Italian vessel were rescued in a large-scale co-operative operation involving other liners and the Coast Guard. 4 later die of injuries, but the toll is miraculously light, in what could have been one of the sea’s worst disasters.

FULL-RIGGED SAILING SHIP enters New York Harbor, bringing a scene from long ago to the busy port. A Norwegian training ship, she carries 150 cadets – perpetuating the days of wooden ships and iron men.

ITALIAN WATER CLOCK ticks off its seventieth year. Powered by the flow of a mountain stream, this unique work of craftsmanship has stood the test of time, running seven decades without faltering.

FASHION PARADE spotlights the latest creations of Italy’s high style designers, with a gala presentation of elegant evening ensembles, in a setting of opulence that complements the gowns’ splendor.

SPORTS:
