ANSWER TO SUEZ:
VENEZUELA – As the crisis over Suez mounts, oil production and shipping facilities are drastically stepped up at famous Lake Maracaibo. As the wells are tapped for still more oil, docks and a channel to the sea near completion.

FLOODS IN AUSTRIA:
AUSTRIA – Picturesque Tyrol is ravaged by savage floods that come sweeping through the valleys following torrential rains. Hundreds are homeless as a result.

BERLIN POLICE GAMES:
BERLIN – A crowd of 100,000 is treated to an amazing display of motorcycle skill and gymnastics by its police. Night brings an awesome torchlight display in the enormous stadium.

JUMPING MEDICS:
FLORIDA – Teams of Air Force medics give a brilliant display of jumping as they compete for honors in accuracy. On target is the motto of the men who bring help to wounded in remote places.

SALMON DERBY:
WESTPORT, WASH. – Two thousand fishermen net 4,000 fish in the annual Salmon Derby, with fish cooperating heartily. A forty-eight pound king salmon takes the honors.

FRENCH FOREST FIRE:
GRASSE, FRANCE – A raging forest fire, that for two days threatens Grasse costs the lives of three fire fighters and the town is only saved by a shift in wind.

ONE OF THE FAMILY:
PORTLAND, ORE. – Chui is the house cat in the home of Doctor Nickelsen, only Chui is a one hundred and eighty five pound cheetah. Gentle as a kitten, he goes shopping with the missus.

CRIMEMOBILE:
AUSTIN, TEX. – A police laboratory on wheels, and complete in every respect is christened under the auspices of Governor Shivers, after being thoroughly inspected by Austin youngsters.

CONFERENCE EASES SUEZ CRISIS:
Cautious hopes for a peaceful solution to the Suez crisis rise as Egypt’s President Nasser negotiates with the five-nation committee headed by Australia’s Prime Minister Menzies. Meanwhile, Britain continues to amass huge supplies of military material, should a show of force become necessary.

PRINCESS GRACE:
Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco hold a press conference at the Monacan legation in Paris before sailing for the United States. The Princess, an expectant mother, announces she is definitely through with her film career.

CATHOLIC RALLY:
100,000 gather in the shadow of Cologne Cathedral for Germany’s 77th Catholic Congress. A huge open air rally and Mass closes the congress, which was attended by 25,000 from the Red zone.

AMERICAN LEGION:
The inimitable Big Parade opens the 38th annual National Convention of the American Legion, the biggest and most spectacular ever staged. It’s a ten hour “Parade of Patriotism.”

SAFETY SHOW:
At automobile proving grounds at Chelsea, Michigan, a Congression sub-committee witnesses dramatic demonstrations of how today’s cars are actually safer, in a series of road tests.

WORLD VOLLEYBALL CROWN:
The final round of the world’s volleyball championship pits America against Russia in Paris. Two women’s teams draw a standing room only crowd, and prove that volleyball can be a game of whip fast crackling action. Russia wins in three straight sets.

BRITAIN’S AIR MIGHT:
ENGLAND – England’s bid for air leadership makes an impressive start at Farnsborough. An experimental Fairey delta wing holds the world’s speed record and the Hawker Hunter is the first plane equipped with air to air missiles. Other merchants of speed and power impress the visiting Russian delegation of observers.

SUEZ IMPASSE:
CAIRO – After fruitless negotiations over the Suez Canal seizure, Prime Minister of Australia and his five man committee take their leave after a flat rejection by Nasser of the West’s proposals for international control of the waterway.

DOG HERO:
CHICAGO – Lassie, a Shetland shepherd, is decorated for saving the life of her master, 9 year old Gary Gustafson, who was bleeding to death following a tonsillectomy. She summoned his parents just in time. Lassie gets a medal, Gary a $1,000 bond.

ITALIAN HIGH STYLE:
SAN FRANCISCO – The Gate City is treated to another first as Italian designers send their cherished creations for a gala showing at a fashionable hotel. Italian high style proves itself very high style indeed in Rome or San Francisco.

HOAD UPSET IN NET FINALS:
FOREST HILLS – Aussie’s Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall square off in the finals of the U.S. men’s singles. Hoad is seeking a grand slam of amateur tennis, a feat not accomplished in 18 years. And little Ken Rosewall plays a blazing, unbeatable game, to defeat his hopes, and become the new U.S. singles champ, in a day of unforgettable tennis.

MILLION DOLLAR HOSPITAL:
PITTSBURGH – The million dollar Roselia Maternity Hospital and Foundling Home, another of the good works of the Variety Clubs of America, is dedicated. Loving care and kindness made possible for many unfortunate tykes through the contributions of people in show business.

BEAUTY ON PARADE:
ATLANTIC CITY – At the annual Miss America beauty pageant, judges make the difficult choice from a dazzling array of charm and talent. Wearer of the coveted crown is 19 year old Marian Ann McKnight of South Carolina.

ASBURY PARK, N.J. – Educational aspects of beauty are highlighted as college queen vie for the national title, and Betty Co-ed shows she’s mastered anatomy, made it a pleasant subject indeed. College Queen is Texas’ Marilyn Meyer.

IKE OPPOSES FORCE IN SUEZ CRISIS

AT HIS WHITE HOUSE PRESS CONFERENCE, PRESIDENT EISENHOWER VOICES HIS FIRM CONVICTION THAT FORCE SHOULD NOT BE EMPLOYED IN THE SUEZ CANAL CRISIS IN THE PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS.

AUTO-BRIDGE:
French Army engineers demonstrate a new means of crossing rivers, using an amphibious truck that can carry 200 men or tanks, or serve as a pontoon, linked with others to form a bridge.

AIR FORCE BEAUTY:
At Floyd Bennett Field, the 436th Reserve Troop Carrier Wing selects its own beauty queen, in a morale building session that should stimulate recruiting, too.

GEOPHYSICAL YEAR:
The French Alps are the setting for another in the world-wide series of experiments probing deeper than ever into the secrets of our Earth. Scientists set off huge blasts to study shock waves.

GRANDPA’S HOT RODS:
Historic Greenfield Village. Mich., plays host to hundreds of antique jalopies, all gleaming like new – and running smoothly. Dozens of horseless carriages, whose names are legend today, ride again.

INDIAN’S FISHING FAREWELL:
Northwestern Indians gather to say farewell to their traditional salmon netting grounds at Colilo Falls, Oregon – soon to be the new Falles Dam. Picturesque sport pursued for the last time.

FLEET REVIEW:
LONG BEACH, CAL. – Two hundred ships of the line and scores of planes stage an impressive display as they steam by Secretary Thomas and four finalists in the Mrs. Navy contest. It is the biggest salute given by the First Fleet since 1934.

EGYPTIANS TAKE OVER:
En route home to Australia, Prime Minister Menzies stops in Washington to discuss further moves in the Canal crisis since the failure of his mission to President Nasser. Meanwhile in Port Said 46 Egyptian pilots are mustered to carry on the canal work – an impossible task, say resigning foreign pilots.

COLISEUM REPAIRED:
ROME – The Eternal City’s busy traffic causes vibration that threatens the uncemented stones of the 2,000 year old structure. Workmen try feverishly to prevent further damage.

A DAY AT THE FARM:
GETTYSBURG, PA. – President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower relax with three of their grandchildren on the farm. Most of the pets get into the act and the chief executive has a rare good time.

SPORTS:
PENDLETON, ORE. – As usual, the Pendleton Roundup, which attracts the star riders of the country, proves to be a bone rattling affair – a continuous battle between man and animal. Some thrilling exhibitions of riding and bull dogging mark the day.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Although Swaps is scratched at the last minute in the United Nations Handicap, Career Boy wins in a downpour, with Find and Mister Gus running second and third. Princess Grace, Prince Rainier of Monaco and Mister Kelly, president of the track are interested onlookers.

LAKE FOREST, ILL. – Harvie Ward one of the few to accomplish the feat, comes through for the second year and wins the amateur golf title by downing Chuch Kozcics 5 and 4 to play.

DULLES SUEZ PLAN WINS:
LONDON – After prolonged debate Secretary of State Dulles’ plan for a shipper’s association to operate the Suez Canal, employing its own pilots, wins approval of the eighteen-nation conference.

CHEAPER BY THE SCORE:
CANADA – Mr. and Mrs. Bert Whyte of Ontario are mama and daddy to end them all. Not content with 5 children of their own, they have taken 52 more under their wing and things are pretty crowded. But all that is being remedied with aid of friends and builders who are pitching in to help out.

DUTCH TRAFFIC PROBLEM:
HOLLAND – The Dutch, even as we, have their traffic violator problem. But they are using the all seeing eye of the camera to nail the wrong doer in his tracks. They can’t talk their way out of the picture.

GYMNASTIC GRACE:
NEW YORK – The famous Sofia girls of Stockholm create a sensation on board the Kungsholm as the liner steams down the bay. Their lithe and graceful performance masks the difficulty of the performance.

COLOMBIA METHUSELAH:
NEW YORK – Four feet, four inches tall, Javier Periera of Colombia, arrives with the claim that he is 167 years old. He will undergo medical examination and doctors say that if he is a mere 120, he will still be the oldest of us.

JAPANESE HIGH STYLE:
NEW YORK – Japanese splendor in fabrics and opulence are adapted to the use of the occident. They’re exotic, these creations, and they give the western Miss an aura of mystery.

FRENCH EXHIBITORS ARRIVE:
NEW YORK – A group of French Theater Owners arrive for the annual convention of the Theater Owners of America. They will discuss problems of mutual interest with their American counterparts, then go to Washington and Hollywood to view the studios.

NEW TRANS-OCEAN CABLE:
The first trans-Atlantic telephone cable is completed, a 2,000 mile strand of heavily armored wire that will for the first time carry voice signals fro hemisphere to hemisphere. The $45,000,000 project is the fruition of path finding engineering research.

ON THE POLITICAL FRONT:
IOWA – As the presidential campaign moves into high gear, Ike and Adlai visit the National Field Days at Jasper on successive days, to greet and address the 100,000 attending, a tailor made cross section of the farm voter.

INDIA FLOODS:
Devastating floods in the low lands follow torrential rains. Four rivers overflow, inundating 200,000 acres of crops, and bringing famine to the area. Refugees from 15,000 wrecked homes overtax relief centers.

REVOLUNTION HERO:
Eire honors a native son who became one of the heroes of the American Revolution. Commodore John Barry, father of the U.S. Navy, is honored in his native County Wexford with an imposing statue.

SYRACUSE UPSETS MARYLAND:
At College Park, Maryland, the grid season gets under way with Syracuse a two touch down underdog, against Maryland – everyone’s pick for the top 10. And in a thrill packed session, the Orange team comes from behind, attacking in the air and on the ground, to trample the Terrapins, 26-12.

DUTCH PARLIAMENT:
Scenes of royal pomp and panoply unfold in the Hague with the opening of the Dutch Parliament. In traditional ceremony that has changed little through the years, the Queen rides in her Coach of State to Knight’s Hall where the Parliament has met to hear their sovereign.

16 DIE IN HURRICANE FLOSSIE:
Hurricane Flossie, first of the year to strike the mainland, smashes over the seawalls and levees of Louisiana. 16 die in the swathe of destruction as the storm ravages northward across six states, before sweeping out to sea on the mid-Atlantic coast.

‘BABE’ DIDRIKSON DIES:
“Babe” Didrickson Zaharias dies of cancer at the age of 42, and sports lovers everywhere mourn the passing of the beloved “world’s greatest woman athlete.” Highlights of her truly fabulous career, from the 1932 Olympics, where she burst into fame, to the present are reviewed.

HAT FASHIONS:
In New York, creations of the country’s foremost milliners for the November to January season are previewed. Ranging from chic miniature pillboxes to resplendent toques and turbans, the mood is appropriately festive.

OLD WEST COMES TO BIG CITY:
The rodeo comes to New York City – cowboys, brahmas, broncs, out where the East begins. But geography counts for nothing – it’s a slam bang show, packed with thrills, and laughs contributed by a posse of clowns.

STAR OF THE YEAR:
In New York, William Holden receives the Theatre Owners of America’s “Star of the Year” award, from Myron N. Black, president of the organization.

KING-SIZE KITTENS:
British Columbia breeds predatory pets, Tamer Paul Hertel calls “kitty” and two cougars come running, to nuzzle affectionately and lick his pate lovingly!

WORLD SERIES: MAGLIE TRIMS YANKS, 6-3:
BROOKLYN – Behind the sterling pitching of Sal Maglie, 39, the “come-back guy” of baseball, the Brooklyn Dodgers win the first game 6-3. President Eisenhower tosses out the first ball, as 34,400 fans cheer the start of baseball’s autumnal classic. It’s a battle of home runs, with Hodges’ 3-run homer the big blow of the game.

DELTA JET CRASHES:
ENGLAND – The RAF’s delta-wing Vulcan bomber crashes in landing, as it completes a 26,000 mile flight, at an average speed of over 500 mph. The loss of the big bomber is a sharp set back to Britain’s air expansion program.

MAMIE SEES CD GARB:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mrs. Eisenhower gets a special preview of new uniforms for women Civil Defense workers. Trimly tailored in “CD Blue-grey,” they include one and two piece dress uniforms, and smartly functional coveralls.

HURDLING HOUNDS:
HOLLAND – Greyhound racing with a novel twist, added steeple-chase thrills. Two races for top speedsters of the breed, and the pack covers the course with lightning-swift sleek grace, at better than 50 mph average over the distance.
