NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1956 (UE56081)

1st SERIES NO-HITTER!
At Yankee Stadium, baseball history is made in the 5th game of the World Series as Don Larsen retires 27 batters in succession – not a single Dodger reaches 1st base, as the Yankee hurler achieves the first World Series no-hitter, and the first World Series “perfect game.” The sensational feat gives the Yankees a 3-2 edge in games over Brooklyn.

PRINCESS MARGARET, touring the lands of the British Commonwealth, visits the island of Mauritius, where the royal visitor opens a children’s orthopedic hospital, the visit of a real princess brightening the day for young patients.

SPANISH D.P.’s return home from Russia, after 20 years in exile. 500 of the many Spaniards who were taken back to Russia when Red forces withdrew from Spain’s Civil War in 1936 are repatriated, amid scenes of joyous, tearful reunion.

NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY is shown in Philadelphia – the incredible tools and techniques that make possible the remote control craftsmanship of nuclear devices for peace-time applications in industry and science.

FRENCH “CARAVEL,” twin-jet transport designed for the European market, is shown to the trade and public at an international air show in Holland. The high-performance craft boasts sleek lines, and unorthodox design.

FOOTBALL: Michigan State – Michigan
Michigan State defeats Michigan, 9-0, at Ann Arbor. The Spartans cash in on two scoring opportunities presented by the hapless Wolverines, an intercepted pass leading to a field goal and a fumble that paves the way to a touchdown.

FIRE FIGHTING, 1900 VINTAGE:
Saint Helens, Oregon, celebrates Fire Prevention Week, with a display of antique fire engines – and an unusual demonstration of just how the old time firebuggies actually worked when in their prime. After the steam boiler and hand-pumper take their turn, modern chemical methods cap the display.

YANKS WIN SERIES!
With the Series tied at 3 games each, the Yanks’ Johnny Kucks shuts out Brooklyn, as the New Yorkers’ hats slam out four homeruns, including 2 by Berra, and a grand slammer by Skowron. A decisive ending to a see saw World Series, as the Yankees score 9 runs, to regain the World Championship of baseball.

MILK FOR JAPANESE CHILDREN:
At Oakland, dockside ceremonies mark the shipment of 4500 tons of powdered milk, the first installment of a 4 year good will program that will provide lunches for 8 million Japanese youngsters.

MISS OVERSEAS FRANCE:
Curvaceous lasses with provocative Bikinis compete for the title of Miss Overseas France – and the right to represent their land in Parris and London contests for the “Miss World” crown.

HOT HYDROPLANES IN GOVERNOR’S CUP REGATTA:
Hydroplanes in the power unlimited class scorch along the Ohio River at Madison, Indiana, in the Governor’s Cup Regatta. The nation’s biggest, fastest speedboats and top racing drivers set a thrill packed pace, with Miss U.S., Fred Alter at the wheel, averaging a torrid 89 plus m.p.h. to cop the coveted trophy.

PARIS AUTOMOBILE SALON:
High style marks the 43rd Paris automobile salon, tops in prestige, attracting celebrities in the audience and the world’s most elegant, and advanced automotive designs from every industrial nation. Back in the U.S., the experimental Dart is tested – an aerodynamically designed car, hand built in Italy, that gives a glimpse of tomorrow.

A graphic summary of the events and achievements of Ike’s administration, climaxed by a brief talk by President Eisenhower himself. A special election year issue, to be followed by a similar presentation on behalf of Adlai Stevenson.

GRAPHIC SCENES AS AIRLINER DITCHES:
Scenes of unique pictorial drama – the actual ditching of a Stratocruiser with 31 aboard, 1,000 miles out from San Francisco. Films made from a Coast Guard cutter standing by record the big plane’s plunge into the Pacific, and the rescue of the passengers and crew – close-up drama at sea.

TOYLAND EXPRESS:
Toyland goes futuristic in an Atlanta department store, as youngsters ride a monorail train, suspended from the ceiling, for a bird’s eye glimpse of the toy department and its wonders.

LUXURY LINER:
Another ocean queen makes her debut. The S.S. Mariposa lies proudly at her Portland, Ore., dock, on the eve of her maiden voyage to Australia. A gala party aboard the luxury liner marks the event.

FOOTBALL:
MICHIGAN STATE vs. NOTRE DAME, at South Bend. An overflow crowd of 60,000 sees a power packed Spartan team move from a 7-7 tie at the half, to score 40 points in the 2nd half. Notre Dame fights hard, but the Big 10 powerhouse wraps up a jolting 47-14 victory.

SOUTHERN CAL. vs. WASHINGTON, at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. The Trojans rack up their old conference rivals in a lop-sided 35-7 victory. U.S.C. remains undefeated, hottest team on the coast with blazing ground attack.

A SCOUT REMINDS VOTERS of a basic lesson in good citizenship – “Get Out and Vote.”
