SARATOGA JOINS FLEET:
BROOKLYN NAVY YARD – The new U.S.S. Saratoga, biggest, most powerful vessel ever built, is commissioned in full-dress ceremonies. With a four-acre flight deck, a complement of 100 super-sonic jets and a crew of 3,500, the colossal flat-top is the greatest one-ship concentration of sea power in all history.

GRACE KELLY WELCOMED TO NEW DOMAIN:
MONACO – Cheering, curious throngs of Monagasques crowd the shores of the principality’s harbor a Prince Rainier’s yacht docks, bringing their lovely Princess-to-be, Grace Kelly, and the bridal party

NEWEST SUPERSONIC JET, the Lockheed F-104 “Starfighter” makes its debut. The most advanced yet to be shown, it boasts a new ultra-powerful engine and razor-sharp stub wings that make it one of the most lethal craft in the air.

200 DAYS TO LIVE is the graduation gift of his classmates to 27-year old Jim Garner at San Francisco State College. Suffering from a rare form of hemophilia, he needs a transfusion a day to stay alive, and all out campus blood drive gives him an assured supply for 200 days.

CORDELL HULL HONORED with the unveiling of a bust in the Pan American Union gardens in Washington, D.C. The nations of Western Hemisphere join in ceremonies honoring the late, Nobel prize winning Secretary of State, the architect of the Good Neighbor policy.

U.S. WINS TABLE TENNIS CROWN:
TOKYO – A thrilling wind up to 10 days of top table tennis, the acme of international competition in the lightning-paced indoor sport. In the mixed doubles, an American team achieves the upset of the contest, to win the World’s Championship, smashing to outpoint a British-Czech twosome, the only Americans to win a Top event.

MT. ETNA ERUPTS, after years in which the historic Mediterranean landmark lay dormant. The snow clad peak springs into fiery life. Molten lava and howling blizzard menace the photographic party that climbs the rim of the great crater.

STOCK EXCHANGE FIRE in Vienna destroys one of the Austrian capital’s architectural landmarks, a venerable structure with which is lost much of a fine art collection. The fire blazes out of control through the night, searing a gap in the heart of the city.

MONTE CARLO – In a storybook setting, part one of a fairy-story wedding takes place as Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier exchange vows in a civil ceremony. There’s a reception, a glimpse of the wedding presents, and a glorious celebration that night – as all look ahead to the church ceremony next day.

EGYPT AND ISRAEL O.K. CEASE-FIRE:
ISRAEL – Hopes for peace rise in the troubled Near East as U.N. Secretary General Hammarskjold wins the agreement of Israeli Premier Ben Gurion and of Egypt’s Nasser to a cease-fire.

600,000 HINDUS BATHE IN GANGES:
INDIA – 600,000 Hindu pilgrims bathe in the sacred Ganges River, observing one of their faith’s most devoutly observed festivals. Infants and aged alike are laved in the holy water, as mystic Sadhu holy men look on some from beds of thorns.

BUMS PLAY IN JOISEY:
JERSEY CITY – Consternation across the river in Flatbush, but a tremendous show of popular enthusiasm in Roosevelt Stadium as the World Champion Brooklyn – or it Jersey – Dodgers played the first of 7 games here. Jersey City’s first big league ball since 1889!

RED LEADERS IN LONDON:
ENGLAND – Soviet Premier Bulganin and Communist Boss Krushchev arrive in London, where they receive a cool reception, from their official hosts and from large, curious, but undemonstrative crowds.

MISS TRUMAN BRIDE OF CLIFTON DANIEL:
INDEPENDENCE, MO. – Former President Harry S. Truman gives away the bride, his daughter Margaret, who weds New York newsman Clifton Daniel in simple ceremonies in the church where her father and mother were married. A crowd of fifteen hundred cheers the newly-weds.

RELIGIOUS RITTES FOR GRACE AND RAINIER:
MONACO – In a setting of medieval splendor, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco are wed in the eyes of God, an hour-long nuptial Mass. A Papal Nuncio delivers greetings from the Pope to the Prince and his new Princess, before they sail on his yacht, honeymoon-bound.

EARTHQUAKE ANNIVERSARY:
SAN FRANCISCO – A civic celebration marks the 50th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake and fire – and the resurgence of the city. Rare original films of the 1906 disaster contrast with the appearance today of the city.

GERMANY AIDS HEART FUND:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mrs. Richard Nixon accepts a German limousine from Ambassador Heinz Krekeler – donated by the City of Stuttgart to aid America’s Heart Fund.

WORLD OF SPORTS:
MOSCOW CIRCUS visits Paris, a high-wire troupe from behind the Iron Curtain abetted by an amazing and agile team of trained bears – all of whom captivate the French with a show that’s good fun, and good circus in an age-old universal tradition.

WOOD MEMORIAL, often considered a Kentucky Derby preview, sees the favorite beaten across the line by Golf Ace, not even entered in the Derby – and sees Golf Ace dropped to 2nd on a foul in the home stretch. Head Man, second runner, is head man after all.

“KRUSH & BULGE” FLOP IN BRITAIN:
Soviet leaders Marshal Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev fail in their role as good-will salesmen for the Kremlin, in Britain. Making the typical V.I.P. rounds, including Harwell Atomic Research Station, Oxford, and an impressive R.A.F. air review, they win only polite curiosity from crowds – and score no diplomatic victories in talks with the Government.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
IKE’S PRIMARY VOTE. In Gettysburg, the President is at the polls at 7 a.m. to cast his vote in the state’s preferential primary, where both parties claim victory.

STORM-TOSSED SEAS convert the everyday job of re-supplying an aircraft carrier at sea into a feat of seamanship, requiring skill, courage and nerves of steel. The placid Mediterranean shows a face of fury.

INDIAN JEWELS are displayed in New York – the fabulous collection of the Maharajah of Rewa, legendary in its magnificence. It includes a necklace of matched emeralds in a bed of pearls and diamonds, and one of the world’s largest gems.

WORLD OF SPORTS:
WHITE WATER on Oregon’s McKenzie River is the setting for a catch-as-catch can spring frolic on the river with daredevils running the rapids on anything that’ll float, from rubber rafts on up!

MOTORCYCLE TRAGEDY ends a race between Austrian and Polish speedsters in Vienna. The light-weight racers set a scorching pace when one skids on the last lap, plows into a wall with killing impact.

DOG RUNS ZOO. In the Berlin Zoo, a shaggy dachshund, a keeper’s pet, throws his weight around – chasing elephants and stealing the lion cub’s bone! A doughty Dachsy.

COLISEUM BECOMES NEW YORK LANDMARK:
The world’s biggest showcase is dedicated to serve the world’s biggest city. Opening day crowds jam the escalators of the twenty-story New York Coliseum on their way to exhibitions on its 0 acres of display floors. One of the gala events is a 2 million dollar International Auto Show, with sleek entries from all over the world – including a $17,500 hardtop.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
CANCER GUN goes into service at Stanford University in California, a six-million volt cyclotron gun that can direct a needle-beam of destruction at cancerous tissue without damage to surrounding, normal, cells.

WHITE HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHERS hold their annual contest for their best pictures of the year – and presenting the Grand Award is their number one subject, Ike himself, beaming at the winning snap of him in typical fishing attire.

SIX COUPLES WED simultaneously in Blenheim, Ontario. Four daughters and two sons of farmer Leo Dorsser are married in a six-way ceremony, with the entire town – population 3,000 – on hand to cheer the newlyweds.

WORLD OF SPORTS:
BERMUDA TATTOO, a traditional British Army ceremony, is highlighted by Signal Corps cyclists staging a thrilling show, featuring phenomenal feats of skill and courage – huge motorcycle pyramids, and riding through flaming hoops for a fiery finale.

APPLE BLOSSOM QUEEN CROWNED:
VIRGINIA – Miss Shenandoah XXIX is crowned by the Lord Mayor of London. Pretty Laura MacArthur reigns over Winchester’s gala spring event, which culminates in a colorful parade in praise of the glories of the apple capital’s luscious product.

OLYMPIC GYMNASTIC TROUTS in Philadelphia, combined with AAU championships, bring together outstanding competitors in the difficult events, staging a top-notch show while vying for a berth on the team that will represent the U.S. in Australia.

SEA SENTINEL:
AT SEA – The Navy’s first off-shore radar station takes up its vigil. A huge platform atop pilings anchored in the ocean floor, it carries a complex array of radar equipment to guard the water approach to the nation’s shores – and it boasts all the facilities to make it a home for its crew of technicians. The first in a coastal chain of sea sentinels.

FINAL RITES FOR SEN. BARKLEY:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Final rites for the late Sen. Alben Barkley, the beloved Veep, are attended by President Eisenhower, members of the Supreme Court, and a host of other dignitaries, as well as hundreds of Washingtonians whose love and friendship he won in 44 years of public service.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
YOUTH REIGNS FOR A DAY in Patterson, California. High school winners of the School Safety Poster Contest take over for Youth Day. Mayor, Chief of Police, every city employee steps aside to let youth run the show.

FRANCE CALLS RESERVES to the colors. To meet the mounting crisis in Algeria, 250,000 are called up for a year’s service, which may extend the length of the crisis, as France fights with her back to the wall in North Africa.

GEN. McAULIFFE RETIRES as Commander of U.S. Army Forces in Europe. Military leaders of a dozen nations are on hand as he takes his farewell review at Mannheim, Germany – the Army’s full-dress tribute to a great soldier.

5 DEAD IN ITALIAN ROAD RACES:
ITALY – Five are dead, sixteen injured, during the grueling Mille Miglia, Italy’s 992-mile road race. Two drivers and three onlookers are killed when speeding cars go out of control on turns, made slick by heavy rains. Italy’s Castelotti comes home the winner.

FLORAL BIRTHDAY GREETINGS for Juliana of the Netherlands, one of the world’s most beloved monarchs. 20,000 of her subjects disregard chilly weather to heap the palace stairs with blossoms, as a beaming Queen looks on.

NEEDLES WINS KENTUCKY DERBY:
LOUISVILLE – An 8-5 favorite wins the classic for 3-year olds with a sensational drive in the stretch, moving from 7th place to the lead in one of the most thrilling Kentucky Derby finishes, before a record crowd at Churchill Downs.

NEPAL CORONATION:
NEPAL – With all the splendor and pomp of a millennia-old culture, King Mahendra of Nepal, Asia’s only Hindu monarch today, is crowned ruler of his strategic mountain land, in ceremonies enacting ancient tradition.

FOLSOM DAM DEDICATED:
FOLSOM, CAL. – Folsom Dam, already storing vast quantities of water and aiding flood-control, is formally dedicated. 50,000 attend the ceremonies dedicating the 100 million dollar dam, the world’s 10th largest.

FASHION PARADE:
NEW YORK CITY – Fashions inspired by fragrance take the spotlight, from the drawing board of designer Samuel Winston. Frothy and exhilarating styles are emphasized – organza and Renaissance lace to the fore.

BAILEY WINS OVER LANDY:
LOS ANGELES – The four minute mile barrier is toppled again – for the first time in the United States – and a major upset achieved as Jim Bailey sweeps past record-holder John Landy to win in 3:58.6. 40,000 fans at Los Angeles Coliseum witness one of the sports highlights of the year.

TITO VISITS PARIS:
PARIS – The full force of France’s security measures is displayed as Marshall Tito of Yugoslavia pays a state visit with his wife. He is decorated by President Coty and lays a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

MOTHER OF THE YEAR:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The first lady receives the Mother of the Year and members of the committee who chose her. Mrs. Jane Maxwell Pritchard has a pleasant visit with Mrs. Eisenhower.

TURBULENT KOREAN ELECTION:
KOREA – Tragedy marks the Korean elections as P.H. Sinicky, President Rhee’s strongest opponent to date, dies suddenly. His followers demonstrate through the streets and storm Rhee’s palace.

IKE GREETS CHAPLAINS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Members of the Military chaplains are greeted by President Eisenhower who, in an informal speech, gives high praise for their work in the armed forces.

HONEYMOONERS AT BULLFIGHT:
MAJORCA, SPAIN – Prince Rainier and Princess Grace come ashore from their honeymoon yacht to witness a bullfight held in their honor.

THE FASHION PARADE:
NEW YORK – The Dresden Figurine look is fashion’s latest, in which the current importance of pleating, stitching and embroidery is brought out in evening gown designs by Miss Helena Barbieri.

WORLD OF SPORTS:
KAYAK SLALOM – Down the turbulent waters of a mountain stream in Germany come daring kayak skippers, in an exciting kayak slalom race. Many a brave boatsman comes to grief in the white water.

MOTORCYCLE HILL CLIMB – The annual hill climb at Lewiston, Idaho, is a definite sign that Spring is here, as daredevil drivers roar up the steep 60-degree slope. Spills galore.

REVOLT IN ALGERIA:
French troops round up thousands of rebels and suspects in an all-out drive to quell a revolt that has spread throughout the colony, leaving a trail of death, arson and pillage. Fire blackened buildings and dead litter the landscape, as the rebellion gains momentum.

A-SUB HAS GUESTS:
The atom submarine Nautilus plays host to civilian newsreel cameramen for the first time during a cruise from Groton, Conn., to New York, and puts on a dazzling show of her maneuverability. Some of her workings are seen for the first time.

DOGGY FASHION PARADE:
SEATTLE – Fashion really “puts on the dog” for this novel show around a swimming pool. Attired in Spring finery, canine blue-bloods strut their stuff firmly guided by style-conscious mistresses.

TRUMANS LEAVE FOR EUROPE:
NEW YORK CITY – Former president and Mrs. Harry Truman board the S.S. United States for six-week vacation trip to Europe. Daughter Margaret, now Mrs. Daniel, is there to see them off.

SPRING AT THE ZOO:
ST. LOUIS – Sneak preview of St. Louis Zoo’s new show has ‘em rocking with laughter, as baby elephants and cute Chimps perform the tricks they learned during the winter. “Capt. Roy” and his chimpanzee shipmates steal the show with amazing stunts.

QUEEN OF THE BALL:
LONDON – Queen Mother Elizabeth leads the ball, following the award of degrees at the University of London. The queen is chancellor of the university.

FILM STAR IN BOND APPEAL:
Film star Jeff star Jeff Chandler takes time off from acting chores to issue dramatic appeal for Americans to Buy Bonds… to save for their, and their country’s, future.

LATE FILMS FROM CYPRUS:
CYPRUS – Latest pictures from the Mediterranean island where the British are striving desperately to preserve law and order. The hanging of two Cypriot rebels brings on renewed violence, and British troops are hard pressed to retain control.

INDO CHIEF WELCOMED:
WASHINGTON – It’s a warm welcome for President Sukarno of Indonesia, arriving for an 18-day goodwill tour. President Eisenhower walks down White House steps to receive visitor in effusive welcome.

COURAGE OVER HANDICAP:
WASHINGTON – Dr. Arthur Abramson of Yeshiva University, crippled during Battle of Bulge, receives top award at annual President’s Committee On Employment Of Physically Handicapped committee meeting. He was Canadian by birth.

MONKEY BUSINESS BOOMS:
RUSSIA – Black Sea town boasts monkey nursery, where amusing critters receives best in medical care but get big kick of simian hi-jinks that will provide many a chuckle. Monday is wash day, even here.

JET CRASHES CONVENT:
OTTAWA – Fifteen persons, crew of the Canadian jet fighter, and thirteen occupants of Catholic rest home, are dead in crash of aircraft into the building. Plane was on “alert” that proved unnecessary – ironic disaster.

WORLD OF SPORTS:
GRAND PRIX – Skidding around dangerous curves in Grand Prix of Monaco, top racing drivers of Europe hit spine-tingling speeds as they roar full speed ahead. Britain’s Stirling Moss cops top honors.

OVER THE JUMPS – Curtain raiser to Olympic equestrian meet in Sweden is an international jumping meet outside Rome. Teams from six nations send spectator hearts skipping, with daring and graceful rides.
