CHARLESTON, S.C. – James F. Byrnes, former Secretary of State, issues a blunt warning of communist intentions and urges that the army be brought up to full strength and that we have an air force that will give America control of the air.

RANK RECEIVES DEGREE
BOSTON – J. Arthur Rank, British film magnate, receives an honorary law degree from Boston University during the school’s Founders Day celebration, for his contributions to good entertainment.

FILM AGREEMENT SIGNED
LONDON – Good news for movie goers on both sides of the Atlantic. Eric Johnston of M.P.A. and Harold Wilson of the Board of Trade announce signing of the new reciprocal film agreement.

NEW YORK – Crippled veterans from Army hospitals compete in a game of wheelchair basketball. The boys from Halloran defeat the Cushing team, 20-11, in a heart-warming exhibition of nerve and pluck.

SEATTLE – It’s early for water skiing, even in Seattle, but the Olympic Club members just wear coats over their bathing suits to keep warm while staging an exciting field day of aquatic thrillers.

THE WORLD CRISIS

TRUMAN WARNS U.S. OF REDS
WASHINGTON – Bluntly accusing Russia of plotting the subjugation of all Europe, Pres. Truman tells Congress that America must build up its armed strength to keep the peace and remain free. He asks for a temporary draft, Universal Military Training, and quick passage of E.R.P. aid to the sixteen nations.

NEW YORK – The President addresses the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick dinner at the Astor and firmly turns his back on Henry Wallace. He rejects any aid from the former Vice President. Cardinal Spellman also attacks the forces of appeasement and prays for Italian rejection of Stalinism.

U.N. PRESSES CZECH INQUIRY
LAKE SUCCESS – Despite the protests and “no” vote of Russian bloe, to stall off an inquiry into the Czech coup, the U.N. Security Council votes 9-2 to debate the controversial issue.

A GREAT DAY FOR THE IRISH
NEW YORK – Under balmy skies Fifth Avenue is alive with marching thousands and cheering millions, including Pres. Truman, Gov. Dewey and James Farley. 80,000 loyal sons of Erin parade in a colorful St. Patrick’s Day festival.

ISLAND RETURNED TO GREECE
RHODES – The Dodecanese Islands, lost to Italy during the war and recaptured by the Allies, are returned to Greece. King Paul leads his countrymen in colorful rites commemorating the return of the famed islands in the Mediterranean.

SCORES DEAD IN TORNADOES
MIDDLE WEST – Tornadoes cut a swath of death and destruction in many Western states, killing at least 52 persons and injuring more than 300. Entire towns are leveled, and the storm damage reaches into the millions. Spring floods add to the misery of the victims.

NET JET FIGHTERS TESTED
AT SEA – The Navy’s latest type jet fighters practice take-offs and landings aboard the carrier “Boxer” in the Pacific. Speedy FJ-1 shipboard fighters undergo exhaustive trials with spectacular results.

COLMAN WINS ACADEMY AWARD
HOLLYWOOD – Ronald Colman, veteran film star, wins the coveted Oscar for his performance in “A Double Life,” during annual Academy Award ceremony. Hundreds attend filmland ceremony, where pictures and stars receive honors.

50 to 1 SHOT WINS GRAND NATIONAL
AINTREE, ENGLANE – “Skella’s Cottage,” nine year old mare, wins the 102nd running of the famed steeplechase, world’s greatest hedgehopping classic. 300,000 spectators rim the course with its 34 jumps, spectacular spills and thrilling finish.

BUZZ BOMBS SHOT DOWN IN AIR FORCES TESTS
ELGIN FIELD, FLA. – A dramatic preview of what war in the air may be like unfolds at the Air Forces training center, with buzz bombs being launched from ground installations. Speedy P-80 jet fighters overtake the guided missiles and shoot them down.

AUSTIN FLAYS RED TACTICS
LAKE SUCCESS – U.S. Delegate Warren Austin attacks Soviet propaganda and coercion methods as the Security Council airs the Czech coup. Austin calls for full hearing on what he terms communist aggression.

FINNS LEAVE FOR MOSCOW
HELSINKI – Bowing to Soviet demands for a parley to discuss a military treaty, Finland sends a delegation to Moscow. Prominent among persons at station are Russian officers, some who leave with the Finnish group.

FLOODS PERIL MANY STATES
U.S.A. – From upstate New York, and into the Mid-west, flood waters peril hundreds of communities, as ice-choked rivers and Spring thaws send flood water surging over river banks. Thousands are homeless.

RANK VISITS WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON – J. Arthur Rank, visiting British film magnate, visits the White House with Universal’s Daniel M. Sheaffer. Mr. Rank also attends a press conference with Eric Johnston of M.P.A.

GEORGIAN BAY, ONT. – Hitting speeds as high as 100 m.p.h., drivers of airplane-engine powered “scoots” skip along the ice in a thrilling winter classic. One of the vehicles is badly damaged in a collision.

NEW YORK – America’s best amateur boxers gathered from two cities, meet in the 21st Inter-City Golden Gloves bouts. Chicago and New York tie. Here’s action and bruising knock downs to delight the boxing fans.

POPE WARNS OF RED MENACE AS EASTER IS CELEBRATED
VATICAN CITY – Pope Pius XII appears before 150,000 in dramatic personal appeal for Italy to shun communism as Easter is celebrated in most parts of the world.

NEW YORK – Following traditional services in the churches, gala Easter throngs parade on Fifth Avenue. Despite chilly weather, the hats are outstanding.

GLENDALE, CALIF. – Easter Sunrise Services draw thousands to spectacular ceremony of devotion and peace at Forest Lawn Park.

HYATTSVILLE, MD. – Thousands of happy youngsters take part in an Easter Egg hunt, with 3,000 eggs keeping them busily engaged.

U.S. OUSTS EISLER
NEW YORK – Dr. Hans Eisler, composer and brother of avowed communist Gerhardt Eisler, leaves by plane for London. Facing deportation proceedings, Eisler decided to leave voluntarily.

LIFT STUNT MAN BY HAIR
MEMPHIS, TENN. – The goofy season is on, with Eddie Polo, movie stunt man, being lifted seven stories by his hair. He sells charity benefit tickets, and drinks milk, on way up. It’s hair-raising.

24 DEAD IN TORNADO
COATESVILLE, IND. – One of hardest hit in west-central Indiana, this town of 350 persons counts 13 dead and scores injured in wake of twister that leveled homes, toppled trains and scattered autos.

NAVY’S “ROCKET TOWN”
INYOKERN, CALIF. – A desert Naval Rocket Research Station comprises 1,000 acres and 12,000 persons, and has turned sagebrush country into busy testing area for latest type weapons. Scientists develop new fuels and missiles for atom age warfare.

U.S. HAILS ARMY DAY
Army Day has renewed significance for all Americans in this year of uncertain peace. Dramatic pictures of what might happen here and what our Army is doing to keep the peace are shown in this thrilling Army Day salute, entitled ”Preamble to Peace.”

COPES NAB WALL ST. PICKETS
NEW YORK – Police and striking financial workers clash at the entrance to the Stock Exchange, following “lie-down” tactics of picketers. Several are injured and scores arrested for disorderly conduct.

YOUNG MEN OF DISTINCTION
NEW YORK – Designed specially for the discerning young man of four or five, these Aladdin fashions, inspired by the motion picture “All My Sons,” give junior a look of jaunty case and freedom of motion.

CHURCHILL CHRISTENING
ENGLAND – The center of attraction is not Winston Churchill this time, but his two month old grandson, Arthur Soames. But “Winnie” gives his grandson an early initiation into Churchillian fun poking during christening.

“BUSHMAN” HAS BIRTHDAY
CHICAGO – It’s cake and candles for the Lincoln Park gorilla. While keepers keep close watch, Bushman goes through the motions of celebrating his 20th, toying with his cake and throwing his 550 pounds around.

OILERS BEAT KENTUCKY COURTMEN
NEW YORK – Basketball provides thrills and excitement for 18,000 plus rabid fans, as the Phillips Oilers defeat the Kentucky stars in a 53-49 Olympic play-offs decision. Tied at half-time, the Oilers race to a last minute lead.

TRUMAN SIGNS EUROPE AID BILL
WASHINGTON – Hailing it as “America’s answer to the challenge facing the free world,” Pres. Truman signs the historic European Recovery Plan bill only hours after Congressional passage.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Honorary degrees are conferred upon two outstanding visitors from Canada, Viscount Alexander and Prime Minister King, and the President of the U.S. during Canadian-American Day at William & Mary College.

FINNS WEIGH RUSS PACT
HELSINKI – Pres. Paasakivi meets with his ministers and members of the Finnish delegation who flew from Moscow with Russia’s latest demands. The free world awaits the outcome of the treaty talks.

“IKE” MEETS GRANDSON
WEST POINT – A famous general greets his first grandson for the first time. Dwight Eisenhower, accompanied by his son and others of the family, looks in on his namesake, aged five days, and baby’s proud mama.

MOUNTBATTEN IN BURMA
BURMA – Returning to the scene of war-time triumphs, Early Mountbatten and his wife are principals in several colorful Oriental ceremonies, including walking bare footed in an ancient temple, as Burma celebrates its independence.

WAVES LASH BARCELONA
SPAIN – Huge waves driven by hurricane winds smash the Catalonian coast, sending towering breakers 90 feet into the air. Homes are threatened as the surging combers roar in over the sea walls.

WISCONSIN – Harold E. Stassen wins a majority of votes in hotly contested race for state’s convention delegates. Gen. MacArthur is a poor second, while Gov. Dewey of N.Y., who made last minute campaign, is shut out in the voting.

TRUMAN SEES ARMY PARADE
WASHINGTON – With high Army and gov’t. officials, Pres. Truman reviews units of Third Infantry on Army Day. Thousands cheer as the snappy troops march on World War I anniversary.

HOFFMAN NAMED TO AID POST
WASHINGTON – Paul Hoffman, Studebaker Motor head, who was appointed to direct six billion dollar European Aid Program, holds press conference following his confirmation by the Senate.

51 DEAD IN JAP R.R. WRECK
OSAKA, JAPAN – Terrible toll of 51 dead and 250 injured follows tragic wreck at Hanazono Station. Crash occurred when express went out of control on grade and ploughed into rear of standing local.

ROYALTY GREETS MRS. FDR
LONDON – Mrs. Roosevelt poses with members of the royal family on top of Buckingham Palace. The King and Queen, Queen Mary, Princess Margaret Rose and Duke Philip greet the visiting former First Lady.

GREECE – American warships and fleet personnel are hailed in Greek waters. King Paul goes aboard cruiser “Rochester,” where he is met by honor guard under Admiral Sherman.

COLOMBIA – Secretary Marshall and delegates from other nations arrive for the 9th International conference of American States. Grave questions of reconstruction and unity will be discussed.

PRINCE VISITS CAPITAL
WASHINGTON – Belgium’s Regent, Crown Prince Charles, is greeted by President Truman at White House ceremony, and later he lays a wreath on the Unknown Soldier’s Tomb at Arlington.

CYPRESS GARDENS, FLA. – Water ski champions, boys and girls together, provide thrills and excitement as they cut aquatic capers during the Dixie Championships. Amazing stunts and death defying jumps!

WASHINGTON – The coal strike ends! Dramatic truce between John L. Lewis and Coal Operators, brought about by House Speaker Martin, brings agreement on an umpire, Senator Bridges, and speedy settlement of the crippling mine tie up. Government contempt actions, however, continues against the Mine boss.

U.S. TROOPS MARCH IN TRIESTE
TRIESTE – Backing up the new U.S. stand of active aid to nations fighting communism, American occupation troops stage greatest show of force in the vital Trieste territory. 5,000 soldiers march as spectators cheer.

ITALIAN “PROTEST” PARADE
NEW YORK – Thousands of Americans of Italian descent stage a spectacular protest parade in the Lower East Side, calling for defeat of Reds in Italy voting. Placards urge persons with relatives in Italy to write more letters.

NAVY BALLOON RISES 20 MILES
CAMP RIPLEY, MINN. – A specially built plastic balloon, capable of rising twenty miles above the earth to test the upper atmosphere, is inflated and launched by the Navy. The “Skyhook” probes the unknown.

NAVY MIDGETS IN SLUGFEST
ANNAPOLIS – Scrappy sons of naval families at the Academy embark on the annual Junior Boxing tournament, with a broadside of rights and lefts. The youngsters display plenty of pep and punch in the amusing bouts.

WORLD’S CROOKEDEST RACE
SEATTLE – Famed far and wide as the world’s most crooked race, the Sammamish Slough Outboard classic pits 30 of the best racing skippers in a thrilling speed dash along the narrow, twisting inland waterway.

HARMON WINS MASTERS GOLF
AUGUSTA, GA. – The coveted masters title, golf’s blue ribbon event, goes to Claude Harmon of Winged Foot, who finishes first in a big field, with three 70’s and a 69, tying the 279 course record. Middlecoff is second.

BOGOTA, COLUMBIA – First pictures of the bloody revolution that shook the western hemisphere and delayed the Inter-American Conference. Dramatic, on the spot films of rioting and bloodshed, as angry mobs fire buildings, overturn streetcars and endanger lives of Secretary Marshall and other Americans. Crazed mobs go beserk following assassination of Liberal leader Gaitan.

FDR MEMORIAL UNVEILED
LONDON – In a stirring tribute to our war leader, King George and his subjects look on as Mrs. Roosevelt, FDR widow, unveils the heroic statue and memorial at Grosvenor Square. Memorial is British tribute to a famed American.

PREIMIERE AIDS BOND DRIVE
NEW YORK – The gala premiere of U-I’s “Are You With It?”, starring Donald O’Connor, draws thousands to the Winter Garden and opening of the Security Loan drive. Film and radio celebrities are among those attending the colorful opening.

BANGOR, MAINE – Flying in spectacular formations, speedy P-84 Thunderjets of the 14th Fighter Wing stage impressive maneuvers at Dow Field. Group is first to get the swift new interceptors, for defense of our N’East.

NEW YORK – Francis Cardinal Spellman, spiritual leader of New York’s Catholics, makes a stirring appeal for funds to aid the Catholic Charities. He plays host to little crippled children at his residence.
