PHILADELPHIA – Winding up their spirited convention, the Republican delegates unanimously select Gov. Earl Warren of California to be Gov. Dewey’s running mate for the 1948 elections. Gov. Warren accepts the V-P spot on the G.O.P. ticket.

MOUNTBATTEN LEAVES INDIA
INDIA – Lord Louis Mountbatten, retiring Governor-General of India receives a tremendous ovation as he and Lady Mountbatten attend last functions before flying home to England. His successor, a native Indian, takes over.

TELESCOPIC LADDER SHOWN
ENGLAND – A London repairman comes up with a handy gadget for working on light poles. A telescopic ladder, convenient, easy to use, and a jiffy to set up. It works like a giant scissor and can be hauled on the back of a bicycle.

FRENCH TIRE WORKERS STRIKE
CLERMONT-FERAND – Communist inspired rubber workers in the “Akron of France” clash with police and mobile guards in the country’s worst labor unrest in months. Many cops are badly hurt by acid, hurled by defiant strikers.

WATER SKIERS “JOIN” FLEET
NEWPORT, R.I. – Ushering in the 1948 water-ski season Bruce Parker and a talented troupe of experts go sight-seeing through the fleet. Pretty girls too, giving the sailors a rare and welcome treat.

NEW “INVASION” OF HOLLAND
HOLLAND – The worst invasion since the Nazis. This time it’s the Colorado beetle, which arrives in boards to ravish crops in the field. Spraying from trucks and helicopters help control the unwelcome visitor.

ELECTRIC SURFBOARD TRIED
LOS ANGELES – Patricia Alphin, lovely picture starlet, goes for a spin on an electric surfboard, latest wrinkle in bathing sports. Patricia looks alluring and the surfboard looks practical.

GERMAN KIDS’ SOAPBOX DERBY
GERMANY – The Grand Prix of Enwangen gives young German speed kings a chance to show their stuff and down they come with a rush in their gravity specials. Speed aplenty and a couple of bone-jarring crack-ups.

MAILLE, FRANCE – The grateful villagers turn out to honor their American benefactors, the Girard Hales of California, here to visit the war-devastated town which they ”adopted” and have provided with many necessities of reconstruction.

JOHNSTON HITS FILM QUOTA
WASHINGTON – Eric Johnston, head of MPA, visits the State Dept. to protest the recent British restrictions on the import of American films. He says ruling violates spirit of agreement which he signed in London previously.

TRUMAN AWARDS HONOR MEDALS
WASHINGTON – In ceremony at the White House rose garden, Pres. Truman presents Congressional Medal of Honor to three World War II warriors for heroism above the line of duty. Defense Secretary Forrestal attends ceremony.

NAPLES HONORS U.S. WAR DEAD
ITALY – As the first of America’s war dead start home from Italian graves, Italians turn out in sorrowful tribute in dramatic ceremony at the Piazza Plebescite. Flag-draped caskets are preceded by guard of honor.

DEWEY AND WARREN CONFER
PAWLING, N.Y. – The G.O.P. standard bearers for the Fall elections discuss campaign strategy at the farm of the Number One man on the ticket, Gov. Dewey. Gov. Warren’s wife and three daughters make trip and enjoy visit with Dewey family.

COLORFUL FLOWER FESTIVAL
GENZANO, ITALY – Flowers “bloom” in the streets in this quaint old Roman castle town. The Corpus Christi festival, with spirited competition from the artisans who create intricate and lovely mosaics with petals and leaves.

NEW YORK – The battleship “New Jersey,” veteran of Pacific fighting, moves majestically past the city skyline on her way to decommissioning at Bayonne. The 45,000 ton warrior goes to join the Atlantic reserve fleet, in mothballs.

U.S. ISRAEL HERO MOURNED
NEW YORK – The body of Col. David Marcus comes home. An honor guard meets the casket of the former New Yorker, slain in the Holy Land, as it arrives by air. At City Hall, Mayor O’Dwyer leads officials in city’s final tribute.

$7,500,000,000 CHECK SIGNED
WASHINGTON – The largest check ever issued – worth seven and a half billion dollars! – is signed by Treasury Secretary John Snyder. The check covers a special account of the Unemployment Trust Fund.

SMALL STORY ON A BIG SCALE
MADRID, SPAIN – Here’s an automobile line factory where they do small things in a big way. Off the assembly line comes miniature autos and trucks, and they can be operated by remote control. Something to delight the kiddies.

PRINCE VISITS U.S. SCHOOL
TOKYO – Crown Prince Akahito, son of the Emperor, visits the American school at Washington Heights, formerly the Imperial troops parade grounds. His instructress, Mrs. Vining, accompanies the young prince on his visit.

KIDS BUILD “JUNIOR CITY”
KANSAS CITY – Future civic leaders are in the making in “Junior City” – novel program of training youngsters in the fundamentals of urban leadership. In tent camp, the kids elect their own mayor and campaign for clean government.

TOKYO – A new record for the 800 meter free-style event is set by 20 yr. olf Konoshin Furahashi, fresh at Nippon University. Clocked by his coach, Furahashi plows through the water in spectacular record-breaking time.

ALLIED AERIAL SHUTTLE ANSWER TO RED BLOCKADE
BERLIN – In blockaded Berlin, food and fuel are short, but the Allies are determined to stay despite all Russian counter-measures. Hundreds of British and American transport planes fly daily to and from the beleaguered city, bringing food and other necessary supplies. The world watches the great struggle between East and West.

EARTHQUAKE RIPS JAP CITY
FUKUI, JAPAN – Almost totally destroyed by B-29 raids during the war, Fukui is again a shambles, with thousands dead, following disastrous earthquake. Fire breaks out after the temblor, adding fresh horrors to the catastrophe. Medical units and Red Cross workers are hard pressed to cope with the disaster.

TRUMAN HONORS BOLIVAR
BOLIVAR, MISSOURI – Pres. Truman and Romulo Gallegos of Venezuela join in honoring Simon Bolivar, South American liberator, at stirring dedication rites. The President, who unveils heroic statue, hails Pan Americanism as hope for peace in world.

SUMMER SKI MEET AT PLACID
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – A hot weather spectacle – ski jumping at the famed Winter resort. Blocks of ice are shaved into snow and dumped on the slope, and from there, the jumpers take it away… and down.

CRACK-UPS MAR AUTO RACE
ATLANTA – The 100-mile stock car race at Lakewood brings thrills and chills; speeding straight-aways, dusty turns, and several nasty accidents. One driver is badly hurt when he crashes into another car.

DELEGATES CONVENE IN PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA – Assembling to pick a Democratic slate for the Fall elections, over 1,200 delegates, many of them in a rebellious mood and some still pledged to Gen. Eisenhower, engage in typical pre-convention hoopla. Keynote speech by Senator Barkley sets the stage for the serious business of nominations. The civil rights plank and the choice of a Vice President divides the factions.

OLYMPIC TEAMS ARE SELECTED IN TRACK AND SWIMMING
EVANSTON, ILL. – The nation’s top track and field stars gain berths on the 1948 Olympic team following spectacular time and distance trials. Mel Patton qualifies for three events, with Barney Ewell and others chosen. Two record holders, Fonville and Dillard, fail to qualify.

DETROIT, MICH. – Olympic diving and swimming! Uncle Sam’s best swimmers, along with their high-flying highboard cousins, thrill capacity crowds with breath-taking exhibition. Ann Curtiss wins the 400-metre event. Sammy Lee, Vicki Draves and Zoe Ann Olsen qualify for diving competition.

TRUMAN NOMINATED
PRESIDENT CALLS FOR SPECIAL SESSION IN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH AT PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA – In a dramatic Democratic convention marked by open revolt of some Southern states and by noisy demonstrations for insurgent candidates, Pres. Truman receive a majority of the votes on the first ballot for re-nominations. Senator Barkley is picked as Mr. Truman’s running-mate. In his acceptance speech, in which he calls for party harmony, the President issues a call for a special session of Congress to deal with “must” legislation.

RACING THRILLS!
CYCLE CLASSIC IN HOLLAND
ASSEN, HOLLAND – Over 100,000 spectators come by auto, motorcycle, train, bike and bus to witness the International speed races. One motorbike driver has a close brush with death when he skids on the wet pavement.

CRASHES MARK “MIDGET” DEBUT
LOS ANGELES – The opening of the Coliseum’s new board track provides the fans with plenty of excitement and palpitations. A crash involving three cars spotlights the thrill department, as the midgets skid dangerously around the turns.

HERO’S BURIAL FOR GEN. PERSHING
WASHINGTON – Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the AEF in World War I, is given a hero’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery. The nation mourns the great war-time leader, whose passing at 87 ended a great career. The impressive funeral procession is witnessed by thousands on route from the Capitol.

ANTI-TRUMAN TICKET NAMED
BIRMINGHAM – Revolting against the civil rights plank of the Truman-Barkley ticket, angry Dixie Democrats hold own convention. Gov. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and Gov. Fielding Wright of Mississippi will head the State’s Right party ticket.

MEDIATOR RETURNS TO ZION
NEW YORK – A new truce in Palestine accomplished, U.N. Mediator Count Bernadotte leaves by plane for Rhodes, where he will attempt a final settlement of the Arab-Jewish war. Security Council threat of sanctions speeded new truce.

WORLD’S LARGEST BLAST
BRISTOL, VA. – The world’s largest commercial blast, of more than 420 tons of explosives, sends a gigantic cascade of rock crashing into the valley near South Hoston Dam. You’ll be thrilled as huge blast lifts entire top of mountain!

NEW YORK – Moving swiftly in a surprise round-up, government agents arrest the top-ranking communists in this country. William Foster, Ben Davis and other accused foes of U.S. democracy are attested under provisions of Smith bill.

IZMIR, TURNKEY – Turkey takes formal title to four undersea craft, veterans of Pacific fighting, turned over by the United States. Turkish and U.S. officials take part in impressive ceremony, following arrival of craft from U.S.

FRENCH MARK BASTILLE DAY
PARIS – A stirring display of France’s armed might is unveiled along the Champs Elysee in celebrating Bastille Day. Ranks of soldiers, sailors and airmen pass in review before Pres. Auriol and Premier Schuman.

FARMER BROWN’S “MAGIC CELL”
MIDDLEBORO, MASS – Farmer John Brown, who received publicity galore because of his “mastercell” which allegedly increases the size of his crops, demonstrates the novel cement blocks which started all the fuss.

NEW ARRIVALS AT THE ZOO
NEW YORK – Among the latest arrivals at the Bronx Zoo are three scrappy Tiger kittens, and other rare offspring of zoo inmates. The visiting children are thrilled with the triplets and with other gangling zoo tots.

HERSHEY EXPLAINS NEW DRAFT
WASHINGTON – Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, war-time head of Selective Service, has been appointed to head up this country’s new draft. He explains the new set-up in a newsreel interview, and stresses that all men between 18 and 25 must register.

CLAY SEES NO WAR OVER BERLIN
WASHINGTON – An optimistic note on the Berlin crisis is sounded by Gen. Lucius Clay, American occupation commander in Germany. Here to discuss strategy with official Washington, Clay sees no war over the Berlin blockade. He flies back to Berlin, to supervise speed-up of the Allied air shuttle.

PROGRESSIVES NAME WALLACE
PHILADELPHIA – The city’s third political convention in a month brings out the crowds, the demonstrations and the hoopla. This time, the Progressives go through the motions of nominating their leader, Henry Wallace, and also override attempts of minority group to castigate Red foreign policy.

POPE WAR WOUNDED KIDDIES
VATICAN CITY – Pope Pius XII receives pitiful sufferers of the war. Mutilated children, hearing the scars of war, are special guests of the Pontiff, who blesses them and presents them with medals.

180-PASS. PLANE SPANS U.S.
PATUXENT RIVER, MD. – A new aerial giant, the 180-passenger Lockheed Constitution, lands here after spanning continent from Moffet Field, Calif., in ten hours plus. The 92-ton craft will undergo exhaustive tests by the Navy.

STARS GREET CONTEST WINNER
LOS ANGELES – Bud Abbott and Lou Costello greet Mrs. Bessie Lawrence of Iowa, who arrives with her husband to personally collect auto, trailer and other prizes. She wrote winning essay on juvenile delinquency.

COLORFUL AQUATENNIAL PARADE
MINNEAPOLIS – Spectacular floats, pretty girls, and countless thousands of onlookers give Minneapolis a holiday atmosphere for its annual Aquatennial festival.

REFUGEES FLE REDS BY SEA
BOSTON – Twenty-nine Latvian refugees, who fled from the Reds to escape persecution, arrive aboard a small ketch, after a barrowing crossing of the Atlantic. Customs and medical authorities delay their landing on American soil.

“SHOOTING STARS”
WASHINGTON – Roaring down low over Andrews Field, Lockheed “Shooting Stars” put on a breath-taking display of aerial power. The noise is deafening as the sleek jets pass over the field, singly and in formation. A new two-seater version takes off with a rocket boost!

TRUMAN ASKS CONGRESS TO ACT ON ANTI-INFLATION PROGRAM
WASHINGTON – Appearing before a special session of what he has termed “the worst Congress,” President Truman makes an appeal for passage of his anti-inflation program. He says it may be too late to act on prices and housing if Congress delays.

“NEW LOOK” AT THE BEACH
WILDWOOD, N.J. – Overweight gals anxious for that svelte “new look” work hard at calisthenics classes held on the sands at Wildwood. Off come the pounds, the hard way, and it’s no laughing matter for those involved.

CANADA WHALERS SET UP SHOP
BRITISH COLUMBIA – For the first time since the war, the whaling industry returns to British Columbia. From a new plant at Coal Harbor, the whalers set out for a colorful and highly successful expedition, returning with a valuable haul.

U.S. RIDERS IN AACHEN WIN
AACHEN, GERMANY – The 18th International Riding Tournament provides 33,000 turf fans with top-notch jumping by teams from the U.S. and other nations. Several nasty spills ensue at the obstacles, and the American team scores impressively.

CALGARY STAMPEDE A WHOPPER!
ALBERTA – The famed Calgary Stampede – “world series” of all rodeos, gets off to a flying start, with a spectacular display of rough riding. For sheer laughs, you can’t beat Slim Pickens, who’s an old hand at “buffalo-ing” Brahma bulls.

ARGENTINE FIGHTS LOCUSTS
CORDOBA – Desolation and destruction follow advancing hordes of grasshoppers in rich farm country. Primitive traps are used, but the use of chemicals and flame-throwers really tells as farmers and government authorities go to war.

“INFLATION” HITS THE ARMY
FORT BRAGG – Pneumatic weapons go to war. ROTC students see a demonstration of rubberized tanks, guns and jeeps, which, when inflated, look like real thing and draw enemy fire. When a blow-up blows up, whammo!
