NEW YORK – Aircraft darken the sky as service and commercial aircraft go through their paces to inaugurate Gotham’s $200,000,000 international terminal. President Truman and Governor Dewey appear on the same platform to dedicate the mammoth enterprise.

200 DIE IN GERMAN BLAST
LUDWIGSHAVEN – The Giant I.G. Farben plant in French occupied territory is reduced to rubble in the worst disaster in Europe since the war. More than three thousand were injured and American rescue teams were called in to help.

OLYMPIC GAMES
LONDON – Eighty thousand throng Wembley stadium to witness the opening of the 14th Olympiad – the first international contests since the war. King George opens the games in which the United States is heavily favored to win.

YANKS GAIN IN TRACK AND SWIMMING
LONDON, ENGLAND – Thee 14th Olympiad rolls on at Wembley Stadium. Adding to their impressive list of victories, the Americans chalk up new honors in thrilling track and swimming events. In the high hurdles, Roy Cochran hangs up a new record. Willie Steele is hurt but wins the broad jump. A photo finish in the 100-metre dash, with Harrison Dillard beating Barney Ewell by a whisker. Highlights of swimming and diving! Walter Ris scores in the 100, while Bruce Harlan and Lt. Sammy Lee are one-two in the diving. Pretty Vicki Draves thrills the fans as she wins the women’s diving. The weatherman provides some typically British climate, but the hardy spectators remain for further Olympic thrills, including Mal Whitfield’s impressive triumph in the 800-metre event.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OLYMPICS
LONDON – More thrills from the Olympics. Official pictures of the 14th Olympiad in progress. Sellout crowds at Wembley Stadium see spectacular triumphs in track and swimming. It’s a clean sweep for the U.S. in the shot put. The women have their day too, with great wins in various field events. Another Yank sweep takes place in the high hurdles. American champs have a field day in the diving, chalking up impressive victories. Sammy Lee, Bruce Harlan, Vicki Draves and teammates are unbeatable.

SUPERFORTS OUT OF STORAGE
TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Air Force “removes the wraps” from hundreds of World War II Superfortresses at the Davis Monthan base. The huge bombers, which will augment our expanding air force, are “depickled” by special crews and will be flown to reconditioning centers for improvements.

PUERTO RICO HOUSING BOOM
SAN JUAN – The largest private housing project in the world! On the city’s outskirts, veritable army of workers speeds construction on vast project, where 7,000 concrete homes rise at the rate of 50 a day.

BEAUTY REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
CHICAGO – Twenty-five lovely lassies, all six feet or over in their nylons, vie for the title “Queen of Height” at the Railroad Fair. Marie VanLeuven gets nod from judges and a necklace from an admiring Indian Chief.

WEST BRANCH, IOWA – Herbert Hoover, former President and grand old man of the G.O.P., returns to his birthplace to celebrate his 74th birthday. Members of his family, and old friends join to help him make it an unforgettable affair.

LONG BEACH – Five-thousand thrilled, happy youngsters, orphans and disabled kids of all faiths, are guests of David Soden on a pleasure-packed outing. With friendly cops to help, the kiddies swim and play and eat to their heart’s content.

LUGANO – President Celio of Switzerland leads the tiny republic in observing its 667th birthday, by inspecting the Boy Scout encampment at Trevano. More than 10,000 scouts greet him with a colorful program of scout activities.

MERMAID DISPLAYS TECHNIQUE
TAMPA – The Dixie premiere of “Mr. Peabody and The Mermaid” is heralded by pretty Nancy Tribble, in appropriate attire, cavorting in a pool. Right down to the last detail, Nancy is an eye-filling mermaid.

THRILLS FROM THE OLYMPICS
LONDON – The disputed 400-meter relay, which these official films later proved the U.S. runners had won, is among the thrills packed into this latest round-up of the Olympics. A spectacular exhibition of high-platform diving is put on by champions of many nations, including the victorious Americans.

NATION MOURNS BABE RUTH
NEW YORK – Babe Ruth is dead. The idol of millions passes after a lingering throat ailment that cost him his life. The beloved “Bambino” is shown in happier days, when, as the Home-Run King, he endeared himself to all Americans, young and old alike.

BUMPER WHEAT HARVEST
WASHINGTON – Harvest news, and a bumper wheat crop in the rich Northwest. Eastern Washington is a scene of over-flowing elevators, and wheat piled up on the ground. Cheerful news, for bumper harvests promise to bring lower prices.

KIDS IN SOAP BOX DERBY
AKRON – Tops for thrills in the sporting annals of youth, the All-American Soap Box Derby brings out a big field of little speed kings, speeding down the incline in their amazing home-grown buggies. A happy winner is Donald Strub of Akron.

LATEST PALESTINE NEWS
PALESTINE – While Irgun forces hail return of Menachem Beigin, underground chief who eluded the British. United Nations truce team accompanies Haganah group in negotiating return of Jewish dead from no-man’s land.

CANOE JOUSTING IN FRANCE

WASHINGTON – Commemorating the first issue of a “Salute to Youth” stamp, Pres. Truman plays host to a large gathering on the White House lawn. The ceremony is a colorful prelude to the nation’s Youth Month.

LONDON – The 14th Olympiad comes to a spectacular close, on a note of ceremony and good fellowship. Thrilling military jumping events are shown in these official films, and the American team is victorious in the Olympics with a staggering tally of 662 points.

LAST RITES FOR BABE RUTH
NEW YORK – While thousands stand in reverent silence outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral, last rites are held for Babe Ruth, the King of Swat. Baseball’s greatest hero is laid to rest following the high mass celebrated at the cathedral. Thousands filed past his bier at Yankee Stadium

KOREA HAILS INDEPENDENCE
SEOUL, KOREA – Despite the presence of hostile forces in the northern zone, the majority of Korea’s population celebrates its independence. President Rhee greets Gen. MacArthur who flies from Tokyo to take a leading role in the freedom ceremony.

HIGHEST DIVE IN THE WORLD
PALISADES PARK – Sol. Solomon, who claims to be the highest diver in the world, proves it by plunging 128 feet from the top of a tower into a small pool only 5 feet deep. Hold your breath… here come suspense and chills to end ‘em all!

BIGGEST OIL RUSH IN CANADA
ALBERTA – Spectacular pictures of the great Ledue oil field, one of the greatest discoveries in the world. More than 100 wells have been dug and 300 more are planned. One well has gone wild, flooding a vast area, and all efforts to plug it have failed.

LASSIES UNLIMBER LOVELY
OCEAN PARK, CALIF. – Shapely Pat Hall wins the title of the girl with “The World’s Most Beautiful Legs” during novel Venus contest. The judges include Ava Gardner, film star, and Varga the artist. Gorgeous gams capture the spotlight.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Secrecy surrounds the meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the War College. Secretary Forrestal and the heads of the various military agencies confer, as world tension mounts over the stalemate between East and West.

U.S. OUSTS RUSS CONSUL
NEW YORK – Jacob Lomakin, Soviet Consul General who was mixed up in “L-Affaire Kasenkina,” talks to reporters following ouster requested by State Department. He refuses to talk, during interview at consulate where Mrs. Kasenkina jumped from window.

OUTSTANDING DAUGHTERS CHOSEN
LOS ANGELES – Ann Blyth of the movies and Dorothy Warren, daughter of the Vice-Presidential candidate, are among those selected as outstanding daughters of the year by the All-American Congress.

“AXIS SALLY” HOME FOR TRIAL
WASHINGTON – The Nazi radio wartime “Axis Sally” returns to the U.S. to face treason charges. Mildred Gillars, 47 lands under guard in an Army plane, after being flown here from Germany where she was arrested.

MISS CANADA IS CROWNED
HAMILTON, ONTARIO – Betty Jean Ferguson, American-born lassie from Halifax, is crowned as “Miss Canada of 1948,” during pageant in which 36 contestants vie for title before 10,000 spectators. “Miss America of 1947” does the honors.

BEVERLY HILLS – Pretty models and gorgeous new fur coats blend harmoniously during a swank preview staged by Al Teitelbaum. These original fashions for the Fall will make colder weather an absolute “must.”

NEW YORK – In first interview since jumping from the window of the Soviet consulate, Mrs. Kasenkina blasts the Russian version of her leap as all les. She says that she jumped to escape from clutches of Consul Lamokin, whose ouster caused repercussions.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SPY PROBE
WASHINGTON – The spy probe hits a dramatic high as Alger Hiss, ex-State Department official, and Whittaker Chambers, who accused him of having been a Red agent, confront each other before House Un-American Activities Committee. They both deny the other’s charges.

FLAMES RAVAGE FREIGHT YARD
MONTREAL, QUE. – A spectacular three-alarm fire devastates the Bonaventure Freight Yard, and seven firemen are injured during the height of the blaze which destroys two sheds and 130 freight cars loaded with merchandise.

AFRICA HAILS DONALD O’CONNOR
SO. AFRICA – The populace young screen star gets a hearty welcome during his African visit. He takes part in a polio drive parade, and later provides natives with hearty laughs by taking part in a ceremonial war dance.

5 YEAR OLD WATER SKIER DEBUT
DAYTON, TENN. – Little Frances Roller, nicknamed “Fancy,” proves to be fancy on the water skis, and performs with grown-up skill. She also goes for an aquaboard ride, with her pet duck “Junior” as companion.

FIRST PEACETIME DRAFT BEGINS
U.S.A. – Across the nation, young men of twenty-five begin registering for the nation’s first peacetime draft – a draft aimed at preventing a war rather than winning it. In New York, 70,000 sign up, while the Army expects a 9,000,000-man pool, from which to draw a peacetime force for 20 months’ duty.

RED CONSUL SAILS FROM U.S.
NEW YORK – Yakov Lamokin, ousted Red Consul General, leaves for home aboard the liner “Stockholm.” His daughter and aides accompany him, as official displeasure over his handling of the Kaseukina case ends in his departure.

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
AMSTERDAM – The first World Council of Churches, representing most of the Christian group, opens with a colorful procession and service. More than 3,000 delegates take part, and John Foster Dulles speaks to the assembly.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS
ICE STARS IN SPARKLING SHOW
ATLANTIC CITY – The Ice Capades of 1949 bring a talented troupe of ice stars in a scintillating program of lilting dance numbers, graceful duets and novelty routines. A sure fire cure for those mid-Summer blues.

OLYMPIC CHAMPS COME HOME
NEW YORK – The S.S. Washington brings home 164 members of the victorious Olympic team. The group includes champion swimmers, basketball players, weight lifters, and boxers. Decathlon champ Bob Mathias arrives, and is also shown receiving hero’s welcome in his hometown of Tulare, California.

CITATION WINS AMERICAN DERBY
HOMEWOOD, ILL. – The renewal of the American Derby at Washington Park brings out the thoroughbreds, and the turf fans. With Eddie Arcaro up, Calumet Farm’s great “Citation” moves fast in the stretch to annex first prize money.

LATE FILMS FROM BERLIN
BERLIN – While diplomats of the Big Four confer on the Berlin crisis, and a satisfactory ending of the blockade is expected momentarily, the city itself is beset by further difficulties, including bad weather which hampers the great air shuttle. A huge cargo plane crashes, but its precious coal cargo is salvaged.

U.S. SEIZES TOP RED SPY
NEW YORK – J.V. Peters, alias Alexander Stevens, alleged to be the top communist spy in the U.S., appears at special hearing where he meets his accuser, Whittaker Chambers. Immigration officials are considering deportation proceedings.

TOWN CRIERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP
ENGLAND – Hear ye! Oyez! Listen to the champs raise their voices. From all over Britain come the Town Criers to compete for the national championships. They speak for themselves, loud and clear.

DUTCH HAIL QUEEN’S JUBILEE
AMSTERDAM – A gaily-bedecked city welcomes Queen Wilhelmina, as she arrives to celebrate both her birthday and the 50th anniversary of her coronation. At night, millions of lights make the city a bejeweled wonderland.

GOV. GREEN HAILS YOUTH
CHICAGO – Gov. Dwight Green of Illinois outlines his state’s broad program of youth guidance, as the nation inaugurates Youth Month. The Governor praises the film industry for its part in aiding the youth of the nation.

IT’S PENNSYLVANIA WEEK
HOLLYWOOD – Motion Picture Producer David Selznick echoes the sentiments of all Keystone State citizens when he provides the commentary for a colorful pictures commemorating the state’s history and progress.

ARMY, NAVY & N.D. GRIDDERS OUT
At West Point, at Annapolis, and at South Bend, football is the cry that brings out big squads to train for the Fall gridiron clashes. Under the watchful eyes of their coaches, new hopefuls join the letter men in preliminary skirmishes and calisthenics.
