ITALY – Even as the returns are counted, these first films arrive by air for newsreel audiences. Italy votes! By the millions, Italians flock to the polls, with early returns giving the anti-communists a majority. The world awaits the verdict – Communism or Freedom!

AFTERMATH IN BOGOTA
COLOMBIA – While sporadic fighting still goes on, Bogota counts its dead and starts digging out of the ruins of the tragic revolt. Troops patrol the sticken city, as relief supplies are flown in.

FIRST E.R.P. SHIP SAILS
GALVESTON, TEXAS – The first shipment of food under the new $6,000,000,000 European Reconstruction Program, a shipload of wheat, sails from Texas port.

PARIS, FRANCE – Canadian food and clothing are presented to young mothers at hospital by wife of Canadian ambassador.

GARDEN CITY, L.I. – Food and clothing for London’s needy poor, donated at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, are prepared for shipment overseas.

OHIO ON FLOOD RAMPAGE
MARIETTA – Rising many feet above the flood stage, swirling waters of the Ohio River inundate Marietta, routing thousands from their homes and crippling the business section. Row-boats replace autos for transportation.

WHITE HOUSE BALCONY SEEN
WASHINGTON – Center of controversy and political jibes by his opponents, Pres. Truman’s new balcony behind the White House colonnade has newsreel pictures taken. It affords grand view of the Washington Monument.

TINY TOT SWIMS UNDERWATER
LOS ANGELES – Sherry Lynn Whitford is only eleven months old but already a proficient swimmer, and can even swim under water. The precocious tot stays down for seemingly minutes.

16 NATIONS SIGN PACT
PARIS – Banding together to help stave off chaos and communism, leaders of the Sixteen Nations sign a pact for the political and economic union of Western Europe. A vital step in preserving the peace.

U.S. SUBS SAIL FOR TURNKEY
NEW LONDON – Four long-range submarines, presented to the Turkish Navy under the U.S. aid program, sail from the Navy base with mixed crews on board. American skippers will command the craft on voyage to Turkey.

VARIETY CLUBS HONOR MARSHALL
MIAMI – Headed by Chief Barker O’Donnell and picture men from all over country, Variety Clubs hold convention. Harold Stassen is guest of group, which present Humanitarian Award to State Secretary Marshall.

MASS HELICOPTER FLIGHT
LAKEHURST – Pilots and aircraft of the Navy’s Utility Helicopter Squadron Two stage impressive maneuvers at air station. Amazing craft take off in formation, and thrill watchers below during mass flight.

FILMDOM HOSPITAL DEDICATED
CALABASAS, CAL. – A picturesque country refuge, for the industry’s sick and needy, is dedicated as Motion Picture Country Hospital. Jean Hersholt, Robert Young, Shirley Temple and other stars attend ceremony.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

3-YEAR OLD SWIMMERS STAR
HOLLYWOOD – They learn to swim early out West. At Sherman Oaks, three-year olds stage a swimming meet, and prove adept at diving too. The small fry are Olympic champs in the making.

CELEBS IN GREENBRIER GOLF
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS – Famous names are guests of Robert R. Young at the re-opening of the Greenbrier Hotel. A golf match, featuring J. Arthur Rauk, The Duke of Windsor, Bing Crosby and many top-notch pros, is the picture news o the gala opening.

ROYAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
LONDON – Amid scenes of royal pomp and splendor, Britain’s King and Queen mark their 25th wedding anniversary. Historic films are shown of their wedding. By the thousands loyal Britons cheer the couple during the anniversary procession to and fro St. Paul’s.

VOTING IN SWITZERLAND
APPENZELL – In the quaint canton (state) of Appenzell voting is still conducted in the time-honored fashion – by the voters raising their hands in an open air election. There is no secret ballot here.

FRENCH MINE EXPLOSION
COURRIERES, FRANCE – Twelve miners dead and scores hurt, following an underground blast which shattered the mine buildings. The cause of the explosion, which sent many to hospitals, is unknown.

PRINCESS GETS “GARTER”
WINDSOR – Princess Elizabeth and fourteen others are installed in the Most Noble Order of the Garter, England’s highest chivalric order. Members of the royal family attend the impressive ceremonial at St. George’s Chapel

DIVERS “DISCOVER” MERMAID
SANTA CRUZ – When deep sea divers come up after searching for the “Old Man of Monterey Bay,” during city’s annual festival, they find not a myth but a “Miss” – Miss Ann Blyth of the movies. She makes a lovely mermaid.

SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS
HIGH-WIRE HIGH-JINKS
GERMANY – Famous for 300 years, the “Traber” Show present spectacular tight wire acrobatics. Forward and then back again on a motorcycle! And – a human pyramid on the teetering wire. It will take your breath away while you watch!

THRILLING YACHT REGATTA
BALBOA, CALIF. – The International Governor’s Trophy Yacht Race to Mexico gets underway, with a big fleet of trim craft bucking heavy seas as the skippers jockey for an advantageous start.

MAY DAY CELEBRATED
Here and abroad, May Day is marked by mass parades, although New York’s “Loyalty Parade” overshadows the march of communists and Red sympathizers. In Norway, Denmark, and in Japan, anti-Reds stage own demonstrations to counteract rallies by leftists. In New York, veterans swell the ranks of marchers in impressive demonstration of patriotism.

“IKE” ARRIVES AT COLUMBIA
NEW YORK – Making his departure from Army life, General Eisenhower arrives to take over as president of Columbia University. Mrs. Eisenhower makes trip with “Ike,” after gala military send-off at Fort Myers, Va. He reiterates his stand on a possible nomination, and also says he doesn’t believe war is inevitable.

APPLE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
WINCHESTER, VA. – Against a picturesque Shenandoah Valley setting of apple trees in bloom, pretty Gretchen Merrill, Olympic skater, is crowned festival queen, and poses with her court in a richly garlanded orchard.

“CITATION” WINS THE DERBY
LOUISVILLE – The 74th running of the Kentucky Derby draws 100,000 racing fans to Churchill Downs. Turf classic of the year! It’s a small field, only six entries, but a big thrill when the favored Citation goes ahead in the stretch to win by 3 ? lengths. Coaltown is second, and My Request third.

“MOTHBALL FLEET” READY
BREMERTON, WASH. – While America looks to its defenses to preserve a shaky peace, the Navy provides a welcome look-see at its “Mothball Fleet” at Bremerton base. Pictured are six carriers, five battleships and a host of smaller warships.

TRUMAN LAUDS FAMILY UNIT
WASHINGTON – Speaking before the National Conference on Family Life, the President says the problems requiring solution include housing, health and social security, and sees the family unit as the basis for all government.

ONE DEAD IN GAS BLAST
NEW YORK – Blasted into rubble as though struck by an air attack, a Queens home is tragic graveyard for man killed by flying bricks. Nearby homes are damaged in explosion caused by leaky gas main.

PRINCESS IN COAL MINE
LIMBURG, HOLLAND – Dressed in a miner’s coveralls, Princess Juliana goes down 2000 feet under the ground to inspect coal-mining operations. She gets grimey and dust-covered but endears herself to all the miners.

FLY HELICOPTER INSIDE BUILDING
SAN FRANCISCO – Said to be the first time on record, a helicopter flies inside. Jay Demming pilots a small Hiller-copter around the Civic Auditorium. Bumpy air makes it a hazardous occupation.

TWISTER LEVELS TEXAS TOWN
McKINNEY – Battered and twisted beyond recognition, factories and homes leveled, McKinney digs out of its storm-strewn rubble and counts three dead and fifty injured in wake of tornado that struck savagely.

CHIMPS DO SPRING CLEANING
ST. LOUIS – Spring brings the St. Louis Zoo’s prize chimpanzees out to help with the spring cleaning, but the cute rascals soon tire of work and set out to prove that monkey-shines are batter fun. They are.

OLYMPIC DIVING QUEENS
LAS VEGAS – In pre-Olympic workouts for the games trials at Flamingo Pool, Coach Fred Cady sends his pretty charges through their intricate highboard paces. Lovely to look at, and their form is lovely to watch. The comic clown winds things up on a mirthable note.

U.S. ACTS TO PREVENT TRAIN STRIKE
As the zero hour for the threatened railroad strike approaches, the government moves quickly, seizing the roads in an 11th hour effort to head off a tie-up. Last minute parleys between two opposing factions fail. Seizure notices are posted. Army Secretary Royall urges nationwide cooperation, as entire nation awaits final outcome of dramatic events.

ATOM AGE “HAND” SHOWN
NEW YORK – Amazing mechanical hands, designed by research engineers for handling deadly radio-active materials, are demonstrated. The intricate “hands” pour water, cut metal and perform other amazing feats.

BRIDGE COLLAPSE KILLS 22
FORLI, ITALY – Under reconstruction after war-time destruction by Nazis, the Forli bridge collapses and sends twenty-two workers to their deaths below. Scores of others were injured when the span gave way.

MIDDIES “DUNKED” IN DRILL
ANNAPOLIS – Aviation dunking drill – practice in getting out of a submerged airplane – is held for Third Yearmen, as Latin American Naval Attaches look on. The Middies land hard, get out fast, and swim to nearby life-raft.

JAP POLICE ARREST QUACK
ICHIKAWA, JAPAN – Police arrest the self-styled “Ole Man Salvation,” phony physician who claimed he could cure kids of certain nervous disorders. Films show goofy rites, and climax in police court.

BARRON WINS GOODALL GOLF
NEW ROCHELLE – Herman Barron of Fenway captures the $10,000 Goodall round-robin tournament by a margin of six points, with Bobby Locke second. Ben Hogan and Bob Hamilton tie for third, in tourney which sees sixteen pros competing.

MEXICO FILM STUDIO BURNS
COYOACAN, D.F. – In spectacular $2,500,000 fire, the Azteca Picture Studio in Mexico’s Hollywood is completely gutted. For hours firemen battle inferno, which destroys much valuable film equipment.

MARSHALL DENIES RED TALKS:
URGES PEACE MOVES IN U.N.
WASHINGTON – Denying any idea of U.S. talks with Russia to end the “cold war,” State Secretary Marshall tells news conference that the Soviet must seek peace through the United Nations. He says our discussions indicated no U.S. aim for bi-lateral talks.

CHURCHILL URGES EUROPE UNION
THE HAGUE, HOLLAND – Britain’s famed war leader delivers an impassioned plea for unity and concerted action to delegates of the Congress Of Europe. Princess Juliana and other key figures attend. Churchill gets rousing reception from the Dutch.

NEW WATER REPELLENT TRIED
NEW YORK – An amazing new water repellent named Aqua-Pruf is demonstrated by pretty girls on a golf course. The liquid, which is easily sprayed on, protects clothes, hats, shoes, and other porous materials.

AID FOR STARVING CHILDREN
NEW YORK – a check for $10,000, to help feed starving children of Europe and Asia, is presented to Spyros Skouras, N.Y. chairman of the Overseas Aid Appeal, by Henry R. Luce, Editor of Time & Life.

MOTORCYCLE HILL CLIMB
TACOMA, WASH. – Fifty-two hill climb champs take a crack at Blue Baron Hill, but only a few make the grade. Others run into all kinds of grief, spilling, running into the spectators, and even looping the loop. Excitement galore!

MASS PARACHUTE JUMP
KENTUCKY – “Exercise Assembly” spectacular mass parachute drop in maneuvers designed to oust “enemy” force, brings the famed 82nd Airborne Division into action. 2,200 paratroopers, guns and equipment shower down during thrilling war games.
