NEW YORK – Helping needy children abroad is both a humanitarian gesture and also in our national self-interest, State Secretary George C. Marshall tells huge throng during “Crusade” rally at Madison Square Garden.

TRUMAN SEES ISRAEL PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman greets Chaim Weizmann, leader of the new Jewish State in Palestine, and receives from him a “Torah,” or sacred scroll. The Israel President, hoping for lifting of arms embargo, later sails from New York on first leg of journey to the Holy Land.

SHEEP CROSS COULEE DAM
WASHINGTON – In a unique pastoral scene, more than 2,500 sheep cross the gigantic Coulee Dam on their way to Summer pastures. The flow of the dam is at its peak, providing spectacular back drop for the crossing.

OIL WELL GOES ON RAMPAGE
LEDUC, ALBERTA – The entire Ledue oil field is ordered closed, as one of the wells goes on a rampage. Millions of cubic feet of gas and oil escape from well, bubbling up to the surface like some eerie volcanic lake.

NEW YORK – Soccer at its thrilling best is seen at Triboro Stadium, where members of touted Liverpool team, here on goodwill visit, decisively defeat the Metropolitan All-Stars, 5-1, in a downpour of rain.

SOLONS IN BASEBALL SLUGFEST
WASHINGTON – Congressmen slug it out, not over political issues but over baseball! The Republicans versus the Democrats – six innings of good fun, with the Demos winning 23-14. Five-thousand witness colorful Griffith Stadium classic.

FAMED WARSHIP GOES TO GRAVE
OFF CALIFORNIA – The “Salt Lake City” the Navy’s oldest heavy cruiser and nicknamed “The One-Ship Navy” for its heroic role in the Pacific fighting, goes to watery grave after being torpedoed during naval maneuvers. The warship had been condemned after Bikini test.

OIL WELL DRILLED AT SEA
OFF LOUISIANA – A novel drilling rig, built over the waters of the Gulf, is hard at work digging down for precious oil below the sea floor. It’s dangerous work, as water-spouts rise up during a storm to imperil the crew.

DREW DRAWS AWARD
NEW YORK CITY – Gen. Eisenhower makes the award of “Father of ‘48” to journalist Drew Pearson, who then explains the significance of the day.

LACROSSE THRILLS SPORTS FANS
BALTIMORE – Lacrosse, the ancient game played with sticks with the built-in basket, thrills a host of fans, as the Johns Hopkins U. team scores a close decision, 10-8, over the University of Maryland.

8 DIE IN BRITISH RY. WRECK
YORKSHIRE – Another railway accident takes a toll in dead and injured. In this one, in which a speeding express was derailed to plunge down an embankment, eight are killed and scores seriously hurt.

JOE TRAINS FOR JOE
POMPTON LAKES, N.J. – Joe Louis, the Brown Bomber, grimly wades through his training chores as he prepares to defend his world title against Walcott.

GREENLOCK, N.J. – Jersey Joe Walcott prepares for return match, intent on tilting crown from Joe Louis this time, for keeps.

BEAR CUBS TAKE FIRST STEPS
VIENNA, AUSTRIA – “Strupps and Blupps,” newest arrivals at the Vienna Zoo, go for their first walk with Mama Bear. The young cubs have difficulty learning to navigate, but Mama keeps ‘em in line with a cuff here and there.

U.N. STRIVES FOR ZION PEACE
PALESTINE – While the United Nations debates measures and calls for a truce to end the strife in the Holy Land, bitter fighting continues as Jew and Arab fights for possession. Latest newsreel pictures show Tel Aviv bombing and fighting along the Galilee front.

N’WEST HARD HIT BY FLOODS
PACIFIC NORTHWEST – With the death toll still unknown in Vanport, hardest hit city along the swollen Columbia River, the Northwest fears still more floods. Both in the U.S. and in Canada, thousands are homeless and flee for their lives, and damage runs into the millions.

COLUMBIA HONORS NOTABLES
NEW YORK – A distinguished array of notables, including Sen. Vandenberg, James F. Byrnes and others, receives honorary degrees during commencement exercises at Columbia University, where almost 8,000 are graduated. Gen. Eisenhower attends.

1st “MARSHALL” AID ARRIVES
GREECE and ITALY – First ERP shipments under the Marshall Plan arrive in Greek and Italian ports. American officials join with local notables in welcoming the ships, which bring wheat and other needed supplies.

BUMPER PINEAPPLE HARVEST
PERTO RICO – It’s harvest time on Puerto Rican pineapple plantations. Workers harvest a bumper crop, one of the world’s richest. Uncle Sam’s “Little Cousin” is raising a million crates of the fruit this year.

GERMAN BOXERS IN SLUGFEST
BERLIN – At Berlin’s Olympic stadium, 50,000 boxing fans see the clash between the champ, Heinten Hoff, and his challenger, Arno Kolbin. It’s never in doubt, and Hein finally puts Arno away for keeps.

MIDSHIPMEN GRADUATION
ANNAPOLIS – Amid scenes of traditional ceremony and color, the Navy presents commissions to 410 graduating Midshipmen at Dahlgren Hall. Highlight is the customary tossing of hats in the air, and of course, sweethearts make June Week ceremony a romantic “must.”

TRUMAN ON WESTERN TOUR
CHICAGO & OMAHA – Pres. Truman arrives on pre-election tour of Western States. Huge throngs cheer him as he drives through the city. In Omaha, Nebraska, Mr. Truman marches with veteran buddies, and also lays wreath at tomb of Father Flanagan of Boys’ Town fame.

CANADA TRADE FAIR OPENS
TORONTO – Canada’s Governor General, Viscount Alexander, officially opens the great International Trade Fair in Toronto. Exhibitors from practically all countries display their goods, and a swanky style show is an alluring highlight.

COPS TAKE KIDS FOR RIDE
NEW YORK – Off for a day’s outing by steamer up the river to Bear Mountain, go 2,500 excited Manhattan youngsters, as guests of the Police Athletic League. There’s fun and frolic and food for happy “PALS” and their cop benefactors.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS
MIDGET RACERS IN N.Y. DEBUT
NEW YORK – Midget auto racing in the home of the “Giants” (The Polo Grounds). 23,000 thrilled spectators see the racing premiere, called the Mechanical Mosquito Derby. Ray Nester of the Bronx, cops the opening classic after spirited duel with George Price.

LONG-SHOT WINS THE DERBY
EPSOM, ENGLAND – Nearly a million racing fans, including the Royal Family, see French horses win top honors in the 16th running of the Derby. “My Love,” the Aga Khan’s entry, comes in first, followed by “Royal Drake” and “Noor.” The winner pays 100-9, a long-shot!

VANDENBERG BLASTS ERP FUND SLASH
WASHINGTON – In a blistering attack on the “meat axe techniques” by which The House slashed more than $1,500,000,000 from European recovery funds, Senate leader Arthur Vandenberg urges restoration of the funds in the name of American leadership for world peace.

TRUMAN GOES SIGHTSEEING
IDAHO – Continuing his Western pre-election tour, Pres. Truman greets new thousands during rides through city streets, and also finds time for sports and sight-seeing. At Sun Valley, he rides the lift chair, goes fishing, and also tries his luck at skeet-shooting.

$400 EXEMPTION FOR TOURISTS
CANADA – An increased spending exemption for U.S. visitors ($400 instead of $100) makes travel in Canada more enjoyable for those who wish to buy Dominion woolens, coats and other merchandise. The first visitors under the new plan take full advantage of the relaxed restrictions.

WEST POINT GRADUATION
WEST POINT – Welcomed into the Army and Air Force as soldiers for peace, 301 Cadets receive commissions during colorful commencement exercises. Brilliant full dress review precedes the indoor ceremony, and forty-seven “Shavetails” take brides following graduation.

3rd GENERATION MIDGET IS TWO
AUSTIN – Nancy Gayle Swenson, third generation midget, celebrates her second birthday. This dramatic picture story also shows the wedding of Nancy’s parents, and her birth which astounded medical science. Little Nancy has a wonderful party, cake and all.

OLYMPIC DIVERS IN TRY-OUTS
LOS ANGELES – At the Olympic Swimming Stadium, the nation’s top-ranking divers, boys and girls together, go through their intricate paces in preliminaries for the coming Olympics. These slow-motion studies portray them at their most thrilling and wonderful best.

PLANE FLIES FASTER THAN SOUND
MUROC AIR BASE, CALIF. – The fastest plane in the world, the Air Force’s XS-1 rocket plane, is shown in spectacular tests. The sleek craft has flown much faster than the speed of sound, according to Air Force officials. It is carried aloft in bomb bay of B-29.

NORTHWEST GREEST TRUMAN
WASHINGTON and OREGON – The President meets more admirers as he visits Spokane, Grand Coulee Dam, Bremerton and Seattle. He also tours stricken flood areas near Portland and sees terrible damage done by raging Columbia River.

WEDDING OF MICHAEL AND ANNE
ATHENS, GREECE – In quaint Greek Orthodox ceremony, King Michael of Rumania and Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma are wed in presence of Greece’s royal family and others. Anne renounced her church to become wife of exiled Michael.

ZOO CHIIMPS THRILL THE KIDS
ST. LOUIS – For thrilled youngsters, Summer time at the Zoo means fun-time, when the versatile chimpanzees stage their weekly carnival. Trick pony riding, with extra fillips of excitement as the chimps swing on and off the saddle!

GALA GOLDEN JUBILEE PARADE
NEW YORK – More than a million New Yorkers join in rousing Fifth Ave. parade depicting the 50th anniversary of Greater New York, Bicycle cops in Gay 90’s attire lead the Mayor’s tally-ho.

FANS HONOR BABE RUTH
NEW YORK – The one and only Babe Ruth, the “Sultan of Swat,” appears in uniform during colorful Silver Anniversary celebration at Yankee Stadium. The “Bambino” and other famed greats of the 1923 team take part in gala program.

NEW FLOOD PERIL IN CANADA
BRITISH COLUMBIA – The Fraser Valley floods rage on to greater violence. Road and rail connections are ripped, and relief supplies are brought in by plane and by boat to relieve the stricken residents.

CITATION WINS TRIPLE CROWN
BELMONT PARK – Citation, Calumet Farm’s great colt, wins the coveted “Triple Crown” of turfdom by annexing the Belmont Stakes in an outstanding performance. Equaling the record and coming home first by more than six lengths, Citation boosts his earnings to over the half-million mark!

DANISH SHIP HITS MINE
DENMARK – Only the superstructure remains above water following the explosion and sinking of the Danish ship “Copenhagen,” which went down with the loss of 150 lives. Capsized lifeboats tell a grim story of sudden death at sea.

FRENCH HONOR YANK HEROES
PARIS, FRANCE – In the “Invalides,” where French heroes rest, a shrine to American war dead is unveiled by Pres. Auriol. U.S. Ambassador Caffery attends ceremony, during which earth from U.S. graves in France is placed in the shrine.

PUERTO RICO RAISES CANE
PUERTO RICO – The biggest sugar crop in ten years is “sweet” news to Uncle Sam’s island possession. On a 100-mi. front, everybody pitches in to help harvest the cane, and afterwards the fields are burned to prepare for next year’s crop.

FLYING BARNYARD TAKES OFF
NEW YORK – A flying “Noah’s Ark” takes off for Italy from LaGuardia Field. Loaded on board a huge cargo liner are 7 bulls, 2 heifers, 50 pigs, 5 dogs and 16 chickens – all pure stock for breeding purposes. Lots of flying barnyard.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS
RODEO ACES RIDE ‘EM ROUGH
LIVERMORE, CALIF. – This Old West town’s annual buckaroo runs true to form, with the cowhands coming in second best in their encounters with ragin’ steers and rampagin’ broncos. But it’s highly successful for the spectators.

TRICK PISTOL SHOOTERS
YORK, PA. – Bob Geesey and his troupe of trick pistol artists put on a breath-taking exhibition of target skill. They’ll astound you with an unbelievable demonstration of shooting from all angles and positions.

STEEPLECHASEE THRILLS AND SPILLS
NEW YORK – The two-day United Hunts Meet winds up to a thrilling climax, with the running of the Temple Gwathmey Steeplechase Handicap. Several spectacular spills occurs during this race, tops for speed, daring and endurance. There’s a spectacular finish!

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
G.O.P. LEADERS MEET TO PICK CANDIDATE
PHILADELPHIA – Will it be Dewey? Taft? Stassen? Or a “Dark Horse” candidate? All eyes are on Convention Hall as the nation’s Republicans gather to begin their quadrennial task of picking a presidential candidate. In keynote speech, Gov. Green of Illinois attacks Truman administration and predicts a G.O.P. landslide in November.

U.N. GUARDS FLY TO ZION
NEW YORK – The United Nation’s first international police force – 49 men bound for Palestine to help protect the truce – pose just prior to departure by plane for the Holy Land. The volunteers, from seven countries, carry revolvers but no ammunition.

ATLANTIC CITY – Against picturesque hotel pool background, lovely and scantily-clad lassies strut their stuff for the judges in the annual “Photogs” beauty contest. A very eye-filling winner is a Lone Star charmer, Peggy Sullivan.

HOLLYWOOD – “Jane,” a windsome Chimpanzee from Cincinnati, arrives in the motion picture capital and takes it by storm. She gets “made up” by Buddy Westmore, and has lunch with Jimmy Stewart, with whom she holds a delightful conversation, all one-sided.

DEWEY WINS!
N.Y. GOVERNOR SWEEPS G.O.P. NOMINATION ON THE THIRD BALLOT AT PHILA. CONVENTION
PHILADELPHIA – Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York and Republican candidate in 1944, wins the G.O.P. nomination for 1948. Gov. Dewey receives unanimous support of delegates on the third ballot, after gaining strength in second ballot. Dramatic newsreel round-up shows the climatic event, from the nominations and demonstrations for the various contenders, to the balloting and final victory for Mr. Dewey. Former Pres. Hoover addresses the convention.
