INDIANS WIN!
CLEVELAND WINS SIXTH GAME, 4-3 TO TAKE THE WORLD SERIES CROWN
BOSTON – The Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series, winning the sixth and last game, 4-3. Highlights of the other games, including the slug-fest 5th game, are shown in this thrilling round-up. Baseball’s greatest spectacle breaks new records, for huge crowds, and for sporting excitement. In the wind-up contest, Bob Lemon and Gene Bearden share pitching honors for the winners.

U.S. STANDS FIRM ON BERLIN
PARIS – Demanding the lifting of the Berlin blockade, the U.S. delegate, Dr. Jessup, tells the Security council that the U.S. stands firms and will not accept Four-Power talks on the entire German problem until the Berlin crisis is settled.

FOOTBALL!
U.S.C. 7, RICE 0
LOS ANGELES – Southern California’s Trojans stage an 80-yard surge early in the game to defeat a scrappy Rice eleven, 7-0. But 50,000 football fans witness a closely-fought contest from then on.

ARMY 26, ILLINOIS 21
CHAMPAIGN – The Cadets score four times and then hold off a determined Illini bid in the second half, to win a thriller before 71,000 fans. Illinois comes close, but the West Pointers eke out a 26-21 victory.

“IKE” TAKES OFFICE AT COLUMBIA
NEW YORK – Formally installed in the presence of 19,000 spectators from all parts of the world, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower becomes Columbia University’s 13th president. The popular war-time commander of Allied armies takes office with traditional pomp and ceremony.

RAM-JET HELICOPTER TESTED
ST. LOUIS – An amazing new helicopter, powered by two ram-jet units weighing only ten pounds apiece and applying power directly to the blade tips, goes through its paces at the McDonnell plant. Dubbed “Little Henry,” the unique craft lifts its own weight off the ground.

NEW YORK – A Penn aerial in the final 32 seconds of play at Baker Field eats Lou Little’s Columbia eleven, 20-14. 35,000 Alumni Day spectators see Sponaugle of the Quakers snare Bagnell’s toss to win the game, after the Light Blue had registered a 14-0 lead at the half.

MICHIGAN ROUTS N’WESTERN, 28-0
ANN ARBOR – The mighty Wolverines of Michigan maul the Northwestern Wildcats in a bruising struggle before 86,000 fans in a Big Nine contest. Koceski tallies three touchdowns for Michigan, two of them on forwards, as Michigan wins its 18th victory in a row.

U.S.A. – On the 173rd anniversary of our Navy, America salutes the men and ships and planes of the fleet. On the sea, under the sea and in the air, the Navy protects the peace it helped to win. On Navy Day, we honor our first line of defense – Guardians of the peace!

CLAY LAUDS BERLIN AIRLIFT
WASHINGTON – Gen. Lucius Clay, U.S. commander in Germany, says the airlift will be maintained throughout the Winter months, and tells of plans to increase the shuttle. Gen. Clay speaks upon arrival for conferences with official Washington.

LEGION WELCOMES PRES. TRUMAN
MIAMI – Arriving for the American Legion convention, Pres. Truman himself a Legionnaire, gets a big welcome from the thousands of veterans. The President also reviews a colorful parade, including the “40 & 8” hijinks.

DEWEY URGES UNITY FOR PEACE
NEW YORK – Demanding that partisanship be kept out of our foreign policy, Governor Dewey urges that the U.S. act now to solidify the free world against the threat of aggression. The G.O.P. standard-bearer speaks at the Herald-Tribune Forum.

BIG TOLL IN JAP FLOODS
JAPAN – Hard hit by the 1947 typhoon, the Honshu town of Ichinoseki again digs out its dead and surveys its destroyed houses, following a flash flood that rose seven feet in a few hours. Hundreds are dead and thousands of homes demolished.

WARFARE ON THE CAMPUS
NEW YORK – No holds are barred, and look out for your shirt as Freshmen and Sophomores at Columbia fight it out during the annual Class Rush. The Frosh win minor skirmishes but the Sophs come out on top in the greased pole climb.

DUCK HUNTING AT TULE LAKE
CALIFORNIA – It’s a duck hunter’s paradise, when millions of ducks and geese, on their annual migration southward, make wonderful targets. The quota is quickly filled, and still the skies are black with flying waterfowl.

BERLIN: AIRLIFT INCREASED AS RUSSIA VETOES PARLEY
BERLIN – As Berlin marks 100 days of the blockade, with the airlift speeded up as the answer to the Red blockade, the crisis continues. In Paris, where the United Nations deliberates the crisis, Dr. Jessup states the U.S. position, and a Soviet veto stalls the parley. World peace hangs in the balance.

RED STRIKES PERIL FRANCE
ST. ETIENNE – Rioting French miners, incited by Red-controlled unions, imperils France’s coal mines and cost the country untold millions. Loyal troops attempt to restore order and protect the mines, and violence flares at several pits.

40 DIE IN AIRLINER CRASH
PRESTWICK, SCOTLAND – Scattered wreckage is all that remains of a Dutch airliner, which struck high-tension wires and crashed while making a controlled-landing. Forty persons, including several Americans, met a horrible death.

THE PIGSKIN PARADE
ARMY CRUSHES CORNELL, 27-6
ITHACA – Sparked by Gil Stephenson, yearling fullback, the West Point grid machine rolls over hitherto-unbeaten Cornell. 35,000 fans see the grinding Cadet attack smash the big Red, 27-6.

MICHIGAN TOPS MINNESOTA, 27-14
MINNEAPOLIS – Out to make it “Number 19,” the Wolverines come from behind against the determined Gophers, to win a thriller before 64,000 fans in Memorial Stadium. The thrills come quickly in this classic.

FRANCE ACTS TO BREAK COAL STRIKE
FRANCE – Acting with stern counter-measures to halt the crippling mine strike, the French government sends troops into the embattled coal fields, with orders to shoot if necessary. Clashes between troops and Red-led miners dramatize the plight of post-war France.

FLYING LAB TAKES OFF
CALDWELL, N.J. – The hitherto secret Flying Laboratory reveals its mysteries, as the Air Force shows the converted B-17 bomber which is used to test a powerful new Wright Typhoon gas-turbine engine.

THE TRIAL OF ILSE KOCH
GERMANY – Dramatic Signal Corps films show the trial and sentencing of Ilse Koch in 1947. The alleged torturer who supposedly had men killed to use their skins for lamp-shades, was sentenced to life. Later the sentence was commuted to four years.

DEAN OF BASEBALL HONORED
PHILADELPHIA – Connie Mack, genial mentor of the “Athletics,” celebrates his 86th birthday. Surrounded by relatives and friends, including Commissioner Chandler, baseball’s grand old man cuts a big birthday cake.

MACHINE SPEEDS COAL MINING
NEW LEXINGTON, O. – A revolutionary new mining machine, known as Colmol, proves its worth during tests at the Sunnyhill Coat Co. pits. Cutting automatically and continuously, the machine mines coal quicker and better.

MRS. AMERICA ON AIR TOUR
MIDDLETOWN, OHIO – Lovely Marie Strohmeier of Philadelphia, Mrs. America of 1948, visits the Aeronca plant where she begins a nation-wide air tour. There’s nothing like flying “When You Gotta Stay Happy.”

OLE MISS 32, BOSTON COLLEGE 13
MEMPHIS – Pigskin thrills are sure-fire in this clash between old rivals. The visiting yanks unleash two tallies in the final quarter but the Rebels go on to win by a big margin.

CALIFORNIA 21, WASHINGTON 0
SEATTLE – The Rose Bowl bound Golden Bears make it five straight, defeating the Huskies, 21-0. Despite the damp weather, Jack Swaner gets loose for all three of his team’s touchdowns.

U.S. WELCOMES 813 DP’s
NEW YORK – The first group of homeless Europeans to arrive under the Displaced Persons Law come up New York harbor past the Statue of Liberty amid the thunder of welcoming whistles. 813 are in the group arriving on the Army transport Gen. William lack.

MARINE ANNIVERSARY MARKED
WASHINGTON – On the 173rd birthday of the Marine Corps, a huge birthday cake dramatizes a stirring anniversary, and new members of the Womens’ Reserve are sworn in.

PARIS ISLAND, S.C. – Also sharing in the Marine’s birthday celebration are new recruits at this huge training base. Thousands of “Boots” get their first glimpse of life in the famed Marine Corps.

BALTIMORE – Recording their most crushing victory in the long rivalry, the Fighting Irish sink a determined but helpless Midshipmen eleven before 64,000 grid fans. Sitko shines for the winners.

GEORGIA TECH 19, DUKE 7
DURHAM – The Georgia Tech Engineers come from behind to vanquish the Duke Blue Devils, 19-7, for their sixth straight triumph. Long runs and spectacular aerials feature the game.

S.M.U. 21, TEXAS 6
AUSTIN – Paced by dazzling Doak, Walker, Southern Methodist overpowers the University of Texas gridders, 21-6, before the biggest crowd (68,000) in Southwestern Conference history. Walker scores two touchdowns.

N’WESTERN 21, OHIO STATE 7
EVANSTON – Boosting high their Rose Bowl hope, the Wildcats of Northwestern, aided by the fine running of Johnny Miller, halt the Buckeyes of Ohio State, 21-7, before 47,000 spectators.

TRUMAN GETS CAPITAL OVATION: LEAVES FOR FLORIDA VACATION
WASHINGTON – It’s a hero’s homecoming for President Truman, the man who wouldn’t be beaten, and whose re-election astounded the country. Countless thousands cheer him as he returns to the White House.

KEY WEST – A much needed vacation awaits the President in Florida, where he relaxes after his vigorous, hard-won campaign.

FIRST INDUCTEES SWORN IN
NEW YORK – The Army welcomes the first men conscripted in New York under the nation’s first peace-time draft. At Fort Dix, the 25-year olds receive their uniforms and start out on a new career as men helping defend the peace.

FIRES RAVAGE COAST TOWN
TOPANGA CANYON, CALIF. – Raging out of control along a wide front, brush fires roar down Topanga Canyon, leveling everything in their path. More than 50 homes are destroyed and thousands of acres of valuable forest land burned.

PENN STATE TOPPLES PENN
PHILADELPHIA – 80,000 football fans see Penn State’s Nittany Lions topple Penn from the unbeaten ranks, with long marches and spectacular passes. Rogel sparks the Penn State 13-0 victory. A big upset!

S.M.U. TOPS TEXAS A & M
DALLAS – Led by All-American candidate Doak Walker, the Mustangs of Southern Methodist top the Texas Aggies, 20-14. Walker scores two touchdowns and passes for a third, during a close colorful clash.

ARMY CRUSHES STANFORD
NEW YORK – Army’s unbeaten grid forces ride roughshod over the West Coast Indians at Yankee Stadium. Touchdown runs by Stuart, Galiffa, Schultz and Cosentino provide the thrills for thousands as Stanford is shut out, 43-0.

FRENCH MINERS RETURNING TO WORK AS REDS ARE BEATE AT THE POLLS
FRANCE – The French mine crisis is easing. Thousands of miners return to work, following determined action by the government I sending troops to quell the communist-led strike. As coal arrives from the U.S., and the Reds take a trimming in the latest elections, the outlook appears brighter.

ARMY TESTS NEW M-46 TANK
ABERDEEN, MD. – Preview of the “General Patton” tank. At the Aberdeen proving grounds, the huge vehicle goes through exhaustive tests. The “Patton” packs a king-sized wallop but rolls along as gently as a queen.

DUTCH SMOKIG CONTEST
ZWOLLE, HOLLAND – To celebrate the plentiful supply of cigars, the Dutch hold a cigar smoking contest. One hundred contestants puff and puff, trying to see who ends up with the longest ash and the shortest butt.

TEXAS TESTS JET JALOPY
DALLAS – John R. Mitchell, the Fix-It man who took an old car and turned it into a jet-propelled whiz, tries out his novel contraption on the highway. Mitchell really “burns up the road” in his fire-spouting, hot-rod.

LITTLE POPPY QUEEN CHOSEN
MONTREAL, QUEBEC – In a child beauty contest sponsored by the Canadian Legion, five-year old Mary Slattery wins the Poppy Queen title over 230 other youngsters. The cute winner will walk off with your heart strings.

MT. RAINIER, WASH. – The skiing is back in the Pacific Northwest, one of the nation’s ski playgrounds. Ardent fans get their first thrills in picturesque Paradise Valley, where the snow is deep and the excitement at high pitch.
