ASBURY PARK – Tiny tots in novel homemade floats take the center of the stage during the annual Baby Parade on the boardwalk. Little Patricia Cozzens in an historical tableau wins first prize.

TRUMAN OPENS CAMPAIGN; STASSEN REPLIES FOR G.O.P.
DETROIT – Pres. Truman and Harold E. Stassen fire the opening guns in the 1948 political campaign. Mr. Truman, calling for labor backing, says that labor is threatened by the G.O.P. In his reply, Mr. Stassen denounces the President’s appeal as demagogic and says Mr. Truman attempts to set class against class.

JULIANA TAKES DUTCH THRONE
AMSTERDAM – Scenes of glittering pageantry and pomp unfold as Princess Juliana, with her family, rides through the city streets in the Golden Coach on her way to the Niewe Kerk to be invested as Queen Wilhelmina, and members of Europe’s royalty, are among those who witness the colorful ceremony.

THRILLS AT THE AIR RACES
CLEVELAND – Aviation’s big show provides thrills and suspense for thousands. The National Air Races feature speed races, military flying and winners in the Thompson event. Highlight is a new record of 669 m.p.h. set by an F-86 jet fighter.

LABOR DAY CELEBRATED
BOONEVILLE, IND. – Spotlight on Labor Day! As the nation pauses in its annual salute to the working man, Booneville and surrounding areas turn out en masse to stage a colorful parade of floats and marching workers.

A HARVEST OF DANCE RHYTHM
NEW YORK – A gala crowd of 18,000 jams Madison Square Garden for the Harvest Moon Ball. The staid waltz gives way to the jitterbug contest, a frenzied whirl of dancing nonsense with the hep-cats in the groove. Even our cameraman gets in the swing.

TENSION RISES IN BLOCKADED CITY
BERLIN – Latest films from blockaded Berlin! 250,000 jam British sector in anti-Red meeting which culminated in tragic shooting by Soviet troops. Threats by Russian officials, and interference with air shuttle, presage further trouble in this powder-keg area.

NEW SUPERFORTS IN PRODUCTION
SEATTLE – Production is underway on hundreds of the powerful new B-50 bombers, faster and more deadly than their predecessors. The big craft roll off the assembly line for test flights over the mountains.

WASHINGTON – Air Secretary Symington and Gen. Vandenberg, top Air Force chiefs, reveal rapid increases in airmen and production on Air Force’s birthday.

POPE BLESSES HUGE RALLY
ROME – Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Italian Catholic Action clubs, 250,000 girls from all parts of Italy convene in Rome. At St. Peter’s Square, Pope Pius XII is borne through the wildly cheering throng.

JALOPIES GO UP IN SMOKE
CHICAGO – Thousands of safety-conscious citizens cheer as 60 decrepit autos serve as fuel for a huge bonfire on Northerly Island. The jalopy funeral pyre dramatizes Chicago’s battle against traffic deaths.

COWBOYS BITE THE DUST
ELLENSBURG, WASH. – Gathering for the 25th annual Rodeo, top cowhands of the West match their wits with bucking broncs and cantankerous Brahma bulls. The crowds whoop it up as the buckeroo boys ride the bumpy trail from chute to dust.

GOV. DUFF LAUDS STATE
HARRISBURG, PA. – Gov. James H. Duff, Pennsylvania’s progressive and genial chief, praises the Keystone State’s record as he officially dedicates Pennsylvania Week.

MISS AMERICA OF 1948
ATLANTIC CITY – Beatrice (“Bebe”) Shopp, 18-year old farm girl from Minnesota, wins the coveted beauty title over 54 other shapely lovelies as the colorful contest ends. The 1948 winner receives crown from Miss America 1947.

200,000 PAY HOMAGE TO POPE
ROME – Celebrating the 80th anniversary of te founding of their organizations, 200,000 young men of Catholic Action jam St. Peter’s Square in a colorful demonstration of faith. Pope Pius XII is wildly cheered by the young workers for Christianity.

FLAMES RIP DUTCH WAREHOUSE
AMSTERDAM – One of the biggest refrigerating warehouses in Europe goes up in smoke, in a disastrous $2,500,000 ablaze. Thousands of pounds of precious meat, butter and other foods are lost in the three-day fire.

GOVT. HONORS RAILROAD
WASHINGTON – The Pennsylvania Railroad is honored by Uncle Sam for its outstanding record of employees in purchasing savings bonds. Treasury Secretary Snyder presents Pres. M.W. Clements with a special citation.

NEW LUXURY TRAIN TAKES BOW
NEW YORK – The new 20th Century Limited gets a gala send-off, with Beatrice Lillie doing the honors at the christening. The ultra modern streamliner reveals its luxury and comfort during a preview ride up the Hudson.

MATHIAS “YOUTH OF THE YEAR”
WASHINGTON – Bob Mathias, young Californian who won the decathlon at the Olympics, is the special guest of Pres. Truman, along with Arthur cook, youthful rifle champ. Bob has been named “Youth of the Year.”

GAY NINETIES FESTIVAL HELD
NEWPORT, R.I. – Newport, fabulous playground of the elite at the dawn of the century, brings out the ancient vehicles of that era for a colorful often time carnival. Native in bustles, beards and bowlers are on parade!

MRS. AMERICA OF 1948
ASBURY PARK – The American house-wife gets the nod, as judges at Convention Hall come up with a winner in the Mrs. America contest. She’s green-eyed, blonde Mrs. Maria Strohmeier of Philadelphia, and she wins over 26 other beauties.

GIANTS CLAW BEAR GRIDDERS
NEW YORK – 33,000 football fans see the rejuvenated Giant gridders tackle the favored Chicago Bears and score a thrilling 17-7 upset at the Polo Grounds. Undaunted by the heralded power of the Westerners, the Giants lead all the way in thrilling Herald-Tribune Fresh Air Fund charity game.

COUNT BERNADOTTE MOURNED
The peace-loving world mourns Count Folke Bernadotte, slain by terrorists in Palestine where the famed U.N. mediator sought permanent peace. In Paris, a special session of the United Nations hears a eulogy by Britain’s Sir Alexander Cadogan.

TRUMAN AND DEWEY CAMPAIGN
The 1948 Presidential campaign enters its intensive phase, with both major party candidates on transcontinental speaking trips to the West. In Iowa, President Truman appears at farm rally where he described his opponents as “gluttons of privilege.” While in Albany, N.Y., Governor Dewey gets a royal send-off as he begins his campaign aboard the “Victory Special.”

JET SETS NEW SPEED MARK
MUROC, CALIF. – A new official world’s speed record of 671 m.p.h. is established by Air Force major Richard Johnson, flying a production model F-86 jet fighter. Spectacular pictures of a spectacular aerial feat.

MARSHALL FLIES TO PARIS
WASHINGTON – Secretary of State George Marshall leaves by plane for the important U.N. meeting in Paris. Prior to departure, he receives the Variety Club’s International Humanitarian Award for his efforts on behalf of world peace.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS
“BEARS” SCALP “REDSKINS”
BALTIMORE – Football! The Chicago Bears clash with the Washington Redskins before 20,000 fans in a Variety Club sponsored exhibition game. The Bears tally ten points in the closing minutes to win, 17-14.

INTERNATIONAL TUNA CONTEST
WEDGEPORT, NOVA SCOTIA – Here’s sporting thrills, with the accent on fish – Big Fish. In the 5th International Tuna Match, the U.S. team hauls in the most to win over teams from Cubs, Argentina and the British Empire.

HURRICANE LASHES FLORIDA
FLORIDA – Dramatic, on the spot pictures of the hurricane as it lashes coast towns during its devastating course from Cuba northward. Nine are known dead, and property damage tops $25,000,000, in the wake of the howling tropical storm.

TRUMAN AND DEWEY “GO WEST”
While Governor Dewey tells huge throngs that he will undertake big house-cleaning job next January, Pres. Truman’s special train carries him to the West Coast, where again Mr. Truman attacks Congress and Wall Street.

MEXICO MARKS INDEPENDENCE
MEXICO CITY – 50,000 troops parade before Pres. Miguel Aleman and foreign diplomats on the 138th anniversary of Mexico’s independence. Countless thousands view the spectacular freedom review.

BERNADOTTE RITES AT PARIS
PARIS – Diplomats of the U.S., Britain and France stand in solemn tribute as the casket of Count Folke Bernadotte, slain U.N. mediator, is removed from plane for special services, before being flown home to Sweden.

MOVIES AND GREEK CHILDREN
ATHENS – Financed by the motion picture industry, a special refugee camp for children, orphaned by the war, is opened by Queen Fredericka as Psychico. Film executives attend the colorful dedication.

RANDOLPH FIELD – Massed formations and spectacular aerial acrobatics feature the huge Air Force birthday celebration. 50,000 people witness the thrilling show, the biggest air maneuvers ever held in the U.S.

FLYING TIGER AIR CIRCUS
WILKES BARRE – Deliberately crashing his plane into a stone wall is all part of the show’s work for Tommy Walker, whose aerial feat is the highlight of the Flying Tiger. Air Circus. Hold your breath!

“PARASITE” PLANE TESTED
MUROC, CALIF. – The McDonnell XF-85 “parasite” jet fighter, designed to protect the bomber that carries it aloft, undergoes dramatic tests above the dry lake bed. Special trapeze holds tiny craft in bomber’s bomb-bay, and parasite returns after defense mission.

TRUMAN AND DEWEY SEEK VOTES IN CALIFORNIA
LOS ANGELES – Both Pres. Truman and Gov. Dewey continue their vote-seeking tour by appeals for support from the key state of California. Screen stars and many others attend giant rally and give the President a rousing welcome. On his part, Mr. Dewey attacks the administration for its stand on communists and promises laws to deal with subversives if he’s elected.

18,000 AIRMEN ATTEND REUNION
NEW YORK – “Operation Wing Ding.” 18,000 Air Force veterans, including Generals and hospitalized G.I.’s, rub elbows during a colorful reunion get-together at Madison Square Garden. Bob Hope gets a big laugh when he “mixes it” with Jack Dempsey in the ring.

CHILDREN PLEDGE PEACE
BLAINE, WASH. – In an impressive ceremony commemorating 130 years of peace between Canada and the United States, 2,000 children carrying massed flags of both friendly countries parade under the International Peace Arch.

NOTRE DAME 28, PURDUE 27
SO. BEND – It’s close, and it’s a thriller. The Fighting Irish, trailing by two points in the last period, come on to win by one point, to edge out the Boilermakers from Purdue, 28-27.

CALIFORNIA 21, NAVY 7
BALTIMORE – Deadlocked 7-7 at the end of the half, the Golden Bears of California come back fast to score two touchdowns and defeat a scrappy Midshipmen team, 21-7.

BEVIN WARNS RUSSIA
PARIS – Voicing the Western Allies’ suspicion of Soviet acts, Britain’s Foreign Minister, Ernest Bevin, delivers an impassioned speech before the Security Council, calling for peace and arms reductions. Bevin’s grim warning comes as West places entire Berlin crisis in lap of U.N.

PRES. TRUMAN VISITS TEXAS: DEWEY HAILED IN NORTHWEST
The campaign swings into high gear, with the presidential candidates leaving California and heading in opposite directions. Pres. Truman gets a big welcome in Texas, where he “has breakfast” with “Cactus Jack” Garner. Meanwhile, Gov. Dewey swings north, corralling votes in Oregon and Washington.

DUTCH ROYALTY AT THE HAGUE
HOLLAND – Returning from the investiture at Amsterdam, the Royal Family takes up residence in the Noordeinde Palace at The Hague. Thousands cheer Queen Juliana, and Prince Bernhard, as they arrive in the Golden Coach.

SEATTLE – Stalled for 3 ? periods by the Huskies of Washington, the Gophers of Minnesota score three times, once via a 40-yard aerial and again by a 68-yard romp, to win a 20-0 decision before 43,000 fans.

TULANE 21, ALABAMA 14
NEW ORLEANS – Aided by the passing arm of Joe Ernst, the Tulane Green Wave rolls over Alabama as 60,000 fans whoop it up. Tulane is outrushed by Alabama, but Ernst’s aerials turn the tide.

TRUMAN AND DEWEY WIND UP EXTENSIVE CAMPAIGN TOURS
Both candidates wind up extensive campaign swings to the Far West and return, confident of victory. Pres. Truman, who makes a major speech in W. Virginia, is greeted back in Washington – Gov. Dewey, meanwhile, is cheered by big crowds as he comes home through the Mid-West.

STRIKES CRIPPLE PARIS
FRANCE – Striking despite the government’s offer to boost wages 15 per cent, trade unionists stage a two-hour strike that cripples Paris and threatens to spread. Transportation is at a stand-still, and millions are forced to walk home from work.

DARING DESIGNS IN SWIM SUITS
CATALINA ISLAND – In a style parade led by Miss America of 1948, the latest fashions for next Summer’s beaches take a bow. The models are eye-filling, and the suits? Well, you’ll just have to see them to be convinced that they’re daring.

GRIDIRON HIGHLIGHTS
PENN 26, DARTMOUTH 13
PHILADELPHIA – 60,000 football fans see a powerful Penn team, aided by four Indian errors, score four times to keep their 1947 winning stride intact. Dartmouth is beaten, 26-13.

MICHIGAN 14, OREGON 0
ANN ARBOR – Throttling Oregon’s vaunted passing attack, the U. of Michigan Wolverines win a thriller before 65,800 roaring fans. It makes the 16th in a row for Michigan.

NO. CAROLINA 21, GEORGIA 14
ATHENS – Led by Charley Justice, the Tar Heels rip through the Georgia Bulldogs. A spectacular 85-yard punt return by Justice is the thrill play of the contest.

THE WORLD SERIES
BRAVES WIN FIRST GAME, 1-0; INDIANS TIE SERIES IN 2ND, 4-1
BOSTON – Baseball history in the making at Braves Field, as the 1948 World Series gets underway before a packed stadium. In the first game, Bob Feller loses a two-hitter, with Sain the winner as the Braves win, 1-0. Next day the Tribe comes back fast, blasting Spahn and chalking up four runs to win, 4-1.

TRUMAN PLEDGES FIGHT FOR PEACE
PHILADELPHIA – Addressing cheering thousands at Convention Hall, Pres. Truman sees “dead hand of reaction” as leading nation to war, and pledges himself to work for amity. He says he would rather have peace than be president.

CUBA HIT HARD Y HURRICANE
HAVANA – Driving rain and lashing winds smash the Havana water-front, in the wake of devastating hurricane – the second in as many weeks – which takes the lives of scores. The Florida Keys and Miami are also hit by the storm.

PRISONERS HOLD OWN RODEO
HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The 17th edition of the famed “Prison Rodeo” packs its usual wallop of thrills, with hard-riding inmates finding a novel “Out” for those “IN” blues. Broncs and steers give the bad boys a bad time.
