NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59021)

HAWAII IS VOTED INTO UNION AS 50TH STATE:
The Territory of Hawaii is voted into the Union as the Fiftieth state, after some of the swiftest action by Congress in years. Only the mechanics of admitting the state (some 2,000 miles from continental United States) remain. A two day celebration goes into high gear in Honolulu. Huge bonfires, aerial and offshore military pyrotechnics and of course hula dancing in the streets. Gestures of gratitude over the prospective ending of territorial status for the islands of Hawaii. Hail! Hawaii, U.S.A.

THREE NEW CARDINALS:
Pope John XXIII bestows red hat upon three Cardinals whom he appointed last December but who were unable to attend at that time. The three new princes of the Church are: Cardinal Fietta, Italy. Fernando Cardinal Cento, Portugal and Jose Maria Cardinal Bueno y Monreal, Spain.

SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN FOSTER DULLES leaves Walter Reed Hospital for another brief and leisurely drive thru Rock Creek Park. He stops at his home for a visit with his pet poodle, Pepin. Pepin has a slight cold, said Mr. Dulles.

VERTICAL VERONIQUE:
Trim, slim Veronique, a French research rocket soars 112 miles upward from the Sahara. Its one in a series of launchings to study the upper atmosphere. An enlightening glimpse of a member of France’s successful rocket program.

SIX-WHEEL “RUNABOUT”:
A new Swiss truck is demonstrated in Germany. A double-jointed chassis affair with a six wheel drive. It can climb a barrier higher than its front wheels. And can conquer just about any terrain it encounters.

CANADA DOWNS U.S.S.R. IN WORLD HOCKEY:
At Prague, Czechoslovakia, Canada’s Belleville McFarlands win the world amateur ice hockey championship. Canada scored 21 goals and allowed seven in its five games. One of Canada’s goal getters was Pete Conacher, one of several former professionals who augmented the Belleville team. It was Canada’s 18th world title in 27 competitions and the second in a row.

NCAA AT LAWRENCE, KANSAS:
Cincinnati wins over Kansas State. 85-75. And heads for the nationals to face California at Louisville, Ky. Cincinnati has something of a one-man team. And what a man! A six-foot five phenomenal package of power named Oscar Robertson! California – here he comes. That tricky dribbler and master of court strategy. The Big O.

NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59022)

SECRET TESTS OF PROJECT ARGUS REVEALED TO U.S. ADVANTAGE:
Scenes of the Norton Sound – floating laboratory, from which the three nuclear devices of Project Argus were launched secretly last September, in the South Atlantic. The Norton Sound served as a seaplane tender in World War II. Was converted in 1948 into an experimental guided-missile launching ship. Admiral M.M. Mustin was at the helm when the Argus project was carried out. Militarily the findings have great potential significance to the development of an anti-ballistic missile system and to the security of the nation’s early warning and global communications system.

LONDON:
Blazes, flames – reminiscent of Britain’s blitz – cause firemen to battle around the clock to bring under control London’s worst fire in a century. Large number of buildings were completely demolished. Destruction is estimated in the millions. Fortunately no lives were lost

STATEHOOD BILL SIGNED:
President Eisenhower, places his signature to the bill to admit Hawaii to the union as the fiftieth state. In the signing of the act the President used nine pens.

NATO ATTACHES VISIT MISSILE PLANT:
Representatives of a dozen NATO nations visit the Chrysler guided missile plant at Detroit. There they inspect the huge, complex twin assembly lines where the giant Redstone and Jupiter missiles are turned out.

HOLD ON TO THESE HATS:
They were inspired by Universal-International’s new film success “IMITATION OF LIFE” – and styled by fashion genius John Frederics for a beguiling showing in New York.

SKITTLES ANYONE::
The question arose in Texas where the British game has caught on. Skittles are sort of sawed-off ten-pins. A flat, heavy disk referred to as “cheese” takes the place of a ball. Bowling star Lou Campi finds it tougher than his special pursuit.

MOTORCROSS:
That is the name for cross country motorcycle racing. The season opens in Holland. And is an international contest. The Belgian challengers and the Dutch daredevils set the pace. A slam-bang race on the 2 ? mile track with thousands of enthusiasts rooting these stamina boys onward.

NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59023)

UNITED STATES – BRITAIN AGREE ON SUMMIT PARLEY FOR LATE SUMMER:
Top level talk at Walter Reed Hospital with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles participating. The discussions between President Eisenhower, Mr. Dulles, Britain’s Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd results in a formula for meeting the Soviet demands on agenda and representation at the Foreign Ministers’ meeting which will probably begin around May 11, to be followed by a Summit conference.

NOSTALGIC NEWS – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
Deep in the heart of taxis… a cab drivers’ strike is the answer to taxing taxi rides in New York. It was a turbulent episode – climaxed by a mass meeting outside City Hall.

F.D.R. addressed 4,000 representatives of Industry. He called for more jobs. Higher wages.

Globe trotting Mrs. F.D.R. finishes one of her famous junkets – Puerto Rico at that moment – to hurry back to Washington to observe her wedding anniversary.

A new type airplane appears on the scene. The inventor had a most novel notion. He designed the plane with a circular wing… shadows of the flying saucer.

The bogey-men, Boris and Bela – heros of horror to lovers of the macabre and gruesome. Karloff and Lugosi – of the weirdly-eerie portrayals presided over a Cat Show. Black Cat show – naturally.

Reckless and defiant in the face of adversity, members of Chicago’s Union League Club papered the dining room walls of the Club with worthless stocks and securities rendered valueless by the crash. Expensive and lamentable wall covering – and not exactly conducive to good digestion in this Dining Room.

CALIFORNIA HALTS WEST VIRGINIA FOR N.C.A.A. TITLE:
71-70. At Louisville, Ky., the National Collegiate basketball title goes to a Pacific Coast Conference team for the first time since 1942. Fighting off a spine-tingling late challenge – California defeats West Virginia in a thriller-diller witnessed by 18,498.

AINTREE, ENGLAND:
An 8-year old English gelding, OXO, outran and outjumped thirty-three rivals and won Britain’s Grand National Steeplechase. He was an 8-1 shot. And one of the four horses to survive the thirty jumps of the world’s toughest horse-racing course. The purse: $38,208. Jockey: Mike Scudamore. – 153 pounds.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER COMMENTS ON SUMMIT MEETING:
At his Press Conference, the President reasserted his long-standing insistence on advance progress as a pre-condition to a Summit meeting. He said that Nikita S. Khrushchev could not force him by “bluff” or “blackmail” to attend unless there were grounds for believing that “real measures can be discussed profitably by all of us”.

EISENHOWER GREETS KING OF JORDAN:
King Hussein is greeted by the President at the White House where the youthful monarch, wearing the uniform of field marshall was guest of honor at a luncheon.

LANA TURNER releases a barrage of balloons on the Great White Way in New York. The lucky catchers found the balloons contained guest tickets to Universal-International’s new hit film “IMITATION OF LIFE”. The stunt was also a salute to the 32nd Anniversary of the world famous Roxy Theatre.

TIGHT ROPE WEDDING:
The love bug – especially busy in Spring time – nips two young troupers with a touring Circus in France. The romance culminates in a wedding. Performed by the Mayor of the town where the Circus was appearing. The ceremony – unique and lofty affair – with bride and groom perched on the ropes,. The Mayor no doubt had some shaky moments even tho on terra firma.

T.N.T. It’s the Tiny Torpedoes vs. Tots:
At the pee-wee boxing bouts at Annapolis, Md. The off-spring of Navy families enter the squared circle swinging. They take swipes with gusto and oversized gloves… something to see, these twinkling starlets- bursting with sporting blood and enthusiasm. A performance of real promise.

NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59025)

TIBETAN REVOLT:
At Lhasa, Tibetan capital, uprisings against Chinese Communist rule. Shooting started after followers of the Dalai Lama, who is a symbol of national unity as well as the spiritual leader of the Tibetans, had staged a number of anti-Chinese demonstrations in the streets and squares of the ancient capital. Dalai Lama’s whereabouts are unknown. He’s said to be injured but still leading rebel forces in the South. Red China, by decree has striped him of political power. Replacing him with his rival the Panchen Lama. Scenes show both Buddhist leaders in Peiping on pilgrimage to holy places. The Tibetan revolt is evidence that anti-Communist fighters in Asia are acting in unison with the Chinese nationalists to end Communist domination of the China mainland.

ALLELUIA:
A day of rejoicing around the world. The annual sunrise service at Hollywood Bowl marks the occasion with traditional splendor and beauty. At Gettysburg, Pa., President and Mrs. Eisenhower attend Easter services. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, is the focal point for faith and fashion finery on parade. At St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, Pope John XXIII imparts his first Easter Blessing as Pontiff to a crowd of 30,000 in addition to 100,000 who filled St. Peter’s Square.

JET TAKE-OFF:
At Nevada testing ground. The Air Force shows a new rocket launching technique. Taking off from a truck-borne platform it hurtles a Super-Sabre jet aloft from a standing start. Reaching 300 m.p.h. in 4 seconds.

ANCIENT RITE RESTORED:
In Rome, Italy, Pope John XXIII revives the ancient Maundy Thursday custom. The washing of the feet. The ritual is observed this year for the first time since 1878.

LION ROAMS – CROWDS ROAR:
At a preview of the Greatest Show On Earth – that’s the Ringling Bros., etc., etc. Circus now at Madison Square Garden. Excitement not listed on the program occurs when a lion breaks loose from his cage. The big cat gets free to the lobby before he’s captured. Consternation Leo!

DOG-GIT SOCCER GAME:
At Frankfurt, Germany, a capacity crowd gets an added thrill at an all-star Soccer game. Frankfurt vs. Munich. It’s a scoreless clash. With the goalies impossible to pass. Then a pooch – lo! And behold! Decides to do something about the scoreless situation. He scampers on field – races away with the ball – and bang! Nets a goal… man’s best friend does it again.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER ADDRESSES NATO MEETING:
NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION marks its 10th Anniversary. The President addresses the Meeting of NATO Ministers in Washington, D.C. He forecasts long range tensions in the years that lie ahead.

MAHDI DEAD:
Vast throngs mourn one of the Sudan’s beloved religious and political leaders. At Khartoum impressive funeral ceremonies are conducted for Sir Sayed Abdel Rahman el Mahdi, leader of the dervishes.

FORMOSA HAILS TIBET REBELS:
On the Island of Formosa, more than 60,000 demonstrate and roar approval to encourage Tibet’s anti-Red uprisings. As news develops of the Dalai Lama’s escape to India, Chiang Kai-Shek predicts far greater revolts on the China mainland.

FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING IN WASHINTON, D.C.:
Acting Secretary of State Christian Herter confers with the Foreign Ministers of Britain, France and West Germany. A pep and prep session before they convene with the Soviet Minister prior to the Summit meeting.

SUMMER STYLES SHOWN IN A CARIBBEAN SETTING:
A couple of beautiful beachcombers – island hopping in the scenic surroundings of the Netherlands Antilles – displaying an eye-filling array of sun and fun vacation apparel. The flavor in fashion for summer looks mighty delicious from here.

S-P-R-I-N-G:
Beautiful Spring! The curtain rises on the vernal season in the animal kingdom. A regular variety show is given at a Zoo in England. Amusing antics by gamboling lambs and geese – with the show’s star attraction – Mama Bear and her Cub stealing scenes right and left. All these performers recently shook off winter hibernation – not too merry in dear old England this year.

ATOMIC SUBMARINE “SKATE” AT THE NORTH POLE:
The nuclear submarine SKATE penetrates the ice at the North Pole after a historic voyage under the winter Arctic ice. In all the submarine surfaced ten times through the ice while logging 3,090 miles in twelve days. A feat of great strategic value.

NATO ANNIVERSARY:
Germany and Italy observe the 10th Anniversary of NATO forces with impressive and stirring demonstrations of Allied unity.

INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE SHOW:
In New York’s Coliseum – hundreds of nimble and beautiful cars from all over the world compete in the Third International Auto Show. There’s a bundle from Britain. And it was bound to come from somewhere soon… A Do-It-Yourself-Car… Kit style: $885. Assembled – painted, ready to run - $998. Quite a crate… the audience is really bug-eyed at this one.

TOKYO PREPARES FOR ROYAL NUPTIALS:
In Tokyo, Japan accent is on the approaching wedding of Prince Akihito and Michiko Shoda. The festooned Ginza resembles an Oriental wonderland.

BOY OF THE YEAR:
In New York, ex-President Herbert Hoover officially proclaims 16-year old John Drupa of Binghamton, New York, as the Boys’ Club of America – “Boy Of The Year”.

AT AUGUSTA, GA.:
35-year old Art Wall, Jr., placid and immensely personable professional golfer wins the Masters Golf Tournament in what seems to be the strongest finishing round in the history of the notable event. With a closing 66 which included eight birdies, five of them in the last six holes, Wall came from six strokes off the lead carried into the fourth round by Arnold Palmer, the defending champion and Stan Leonard, Canadian. Art hopped over an even dozen in front of him to post a 72-hjole total of 284 made up of rounds of 73-74-71-66.

ZERO GRAVITY TEST FLIGHT:
We see spacemen training in Ohio. Accompanying them is a civilian reporter who experiences zero gravity during the flight. Floating in mid-air – with the ease of a breeze (??) suspending his body with strength of a single finger. Hand-stand style… all this and even harder to comprehend accomplishments from the Space Administration.

OSCAR HONORS:
Academy Awards Night in Hollywood. The film capital is aglow with scintillating stars. The elite of filmdom hails new royalty of the movie world at the Thirty-First Motion Picture Academy Awards. “GIGI”, French musical claimed nine Oscars.

ARCTIC-HAUNTING NUCLEAR POWERED SUBMARINE “SKATE” RETURNS HOME:
After her second historic transpolar voyage. This one in the dead of Arctic winter. The “SKATE’S” Captain, Commander Joames F. Calvert, 36-years oldd, and members of the crew receive awards at New London, Conn.

FASHION PIRACY:
Films from Germany uncover fashion pirates at work. They employ every trick of the trade to copy exclusive new designs. Results are admirable. The method, well, that’s something else again.

NOSTALGIC NEWS – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
Themes. Scenes. Schemes. They don’t change much over the years. Here we see Teachers in Chicago protesting pay injustice. 5,000 instructors are joined by sympathetic students and parents in a march thru the Loop in angry demonstration.

Strikes spread across the nation. Jolting the economy. Violence and hardship abound. Presidential intervention brings about settlement of the auto industry strike.

F.D.R. sails away on Vincent Astor’s yacht for a brief fishing holiday.

New cars rolled off the assembly lines… shiny, 1934 models.

In France, tests of a newly devised non-skid tire tread are interrupted when another car, with old-fashion tires skid-prone, skids in the rain – killing a woman pedestrian in this camera close-up.

JAPAN’S ROYAL WEDDING:
In a typically Japanese mingling of scenes of the modern and of medieval splendor, Prince Akihito weds the commoner he met on a tennis court, Michiko Shoda, as the nation rejoices. Scenes show the wedding, in accordance with 2600-year old ritual, the reception of the Royal Family, and the wedding procession of the story book couple past a throng of 1 million cheering Japanese – and the assault of the one disgruntled student that fails to mar the perfection of the great day.

SEA TRIALS OF SKIPJACK:
First sea trials of the nuclear submarine Skipjack. With its radical fish-type hull, and the mighty power of atomic engines, the Skipjack boasts sensational underwater speed and maneuverability, making it an even more revolutionary craft than the Nautilus.

ST. PIUS X FULFILLS VOW:
St. Pius the Tenth fulfills a vow made 56 years ago, on the eve of his becoming Pope, to return to his beloved city of Venice. Pope John X and 20 Cardinals follow the crystal casket of the Sainted Pope to the special train.

FASHION PARADE IN VIENNA:
Fashion voices of spring in Old Vienna. In settings of rococo grandeur, chic simplicity sets the style note on the banks of the blue Danube. A seasonal innovation is pretty perky parasols for big and little girls.

CANINE CIRCUS:
The big top is going to the dogs, in Berlin – and it looks like a good thing. A passel of performing pups and a monkey stooge or two show they can stage a jumping show without the aid of humans, (except maybe one or two for appearance’s sake).
