IN MEMORIAM – JOHN FOSTER DULLES – 1888-1959:
A time of national mourning follows the passing of John Foster Dulles – for 6 years the maker and shaper of American foreign policy, and through life a courageous champion of peace. Scenes in this film obituary show highlights of his career in the momentous and crucial years of the Cold War, culminating in the gallant struggle against death that won the esteem and admiration of even his foes.

POPE JOHN XXIII GREETS GREEK ROYALTY:
King Paul and Queen Frederika of Greece are received by Pope John XXIII, in the first visit of Greek royalty to the Vatican in over 500 years!

ARGENTINE LABOR RIOTS:
An angry demonstration for higher pay by bank clerks and railroad workers in Buenos Aires erupts into a 4-hour pitched battle with police, dramatically highlighting the nation’s labor crisis for distinguished foreign visitors.

SHAH OF PERSIA VISITS HOLLAND:
Amsterdam Harbor is in festive array to welcome the visit of the Shah of Persia Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard are at dockside to greet the Royal visitor who is received with all the ceremony the historic capital can muster.

SPORTS:
Before 35,000 at Hollywood Park, Hillsdale becomes the top money-winning horse of the year with a terrific victory in the coveted Californian. The classy 3-year-old wins in a breath-taking 4-horse photo finish.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER MEETS BIG FOUR MINISTERS:
Following funeral services of John Foster Dulles, the President meets with the Big Four Foreign Ministers, and urges that upon resumption of the recessed Geneva conference, the strongest efforts be made for sufficient progress to warrant a Summit meeting.

BERLIN ON ULTIMATUM DATE:
Scenes of West Berlin on the deadline date set 6 months ago by Soviet Premier Khrushchev for Allied forces to get out of Berlin show the ultimatum period passed without crisis. Business is as usual in the Free City, except that flags everywhere are at half mast in tribute to Mr. Dulles.

RESCUE HOSTAGES OF MAD KILLER:
On-the-scene films as Dallas, Texas police lay down a tear-gas barrage to rescue four hostages of a crazed killer. Scenes show the escape of hostages and the climax of a 2-hour gun battle as police close in to find the killer’s riddled body.

QUEEN OF ENGLAND AT CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW:
In flower-loving Britain, a perennial favorite is the Annual Flower Show of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, London. The almost traditional visit of the Royal Family is marked by the presentation to theQueen of a new and un-named rose.

JOHN FOSTER DULLES GETS HERO’S FAREWELL:
In Washington, John Foster Dulles goes to his final rest with the highest honors in the power of the nation to bestow, and with the tributes of the world. Dignitaries from abroad include many of the world’s leading Statesmen including Adenauer and Gromyko. After services in Washington National Cathedral, Mr. Dulles is buried in Arlington National Cemetery among many great figures in the nation’s history. A hero’s farewell to a valiant champion of peace and freedom.

SPACE MONKEYS’ ODYSSEY:
Two monkeys, Able and Baker, become the first animal life to voyage into outer space and return safely to earth. Scenes show them in their space suits being placed aboard a Jupiter nose cone, the start o their flight, 300 miles out, the recovery of the nose cone at sea, and the heros reception at a Washington, D.C. press conference.

KHRUSHCHEV’S MYSTERY MISSION:
Soviet Premier arrives in the tiny Red satellite of Albania for a lengthy visit that turns into a convocation of top Red leaders from all parts o the Communist empire – purpose unknown. A strange counterpart to the current Geneva talks.

ROGUE RIVER RACERS:
Outboards battle Oregon’s fast and treacherous Rogue River – going all out downstream and back against the current of the fast-moving stream in thrilling defiance of rapids, riffles and white water for one of the year’s top outdoor sports events.

FASTEST INDIANAPOLIS “500”:
A record crowd of 200,000 at Indianapolis sees the fastest 500-mile auto classic in Speedway annals, and one of the most thrilling. Spectacular spins and crashes, but no fatalities mark the sizzling fast 200 lap event, won by Rodger Ward with the fastest ever speed of 135.857 miles an hour.

Traditional commencement ceremonies at the Service schools. Highlights of the colorful and stirring observances include the graduation at West Point of Pete Dawkins with outstanding academic and athletic honors, one of the Military Academy’s most distinguished graduates ever – and at Annapolis, the first midshipmen ever to be sworn in to the Army!

CLEVELAND HIT BY FLASH FLOODS:
Sudden torrential rains sweep Cleveland bringing flash floods that tie traffic and communications at the peak of rush hour. Many homes are devastated – property damages reach $2 million – and many are injured or suffer shock and exposure.

RED CHINA ELECTS NEW CHIEF:
In Peiping, elaborately staged elections for Mao Tse Tung’s successor as formal chief of state are followed by a “people’s celebration” on a massive and truly impressive scale.

“PARTHIA” WINS RICHEST EPSOM DERBY:
Derby Day, and the 180th running of Britain’s turf classic is in the tradition of holiday mood, colorful spectacle, and stirring sports excitement as 2 British colts, faced by strong French challengers, fight out a sensational stretch battle. “PARTHIA”, the winner, takes the richest Derby purse ever.

Sea-To-Shore Special Delivery, the test flight of a cargo of mail from a Navy missile sub to a shore station by a test rocket foreshadows the day when mail will speed thousands of miles by guided missile, a postal revolution.

ADENAUER STIRS POLITICAL TEMPEST:
West German Chancellor Adenauer touches off one of the nation’s fieriest political controversies when he reverses his prior decision to step up to the honorific post of President, and to keep the reins of power instead. The sudden development came when his likely success, Ludwig Erhard, was visiting the United States.

ROYAL WEDDING:
A Royal wedding with stormy repercussions in Belgium. The marriage of King Baudouin’s brother Prince Albert and Italian Princess Paolo Ruffo di Calabria, arranged without government consent, to be held in the Vatican rouses a storm of protest that forces a change of plans.

FASHIONS – ANTICIPATION OF AUTUMN:
In New York, top designers parade new styles for Autumn ’59; everything from chic suits to sports outfits and big bold coats to defy the nip in the air. An attractive array of apparel on the fashion horizon.

WOMEN’S GOLF:
At Summit, N.J., Betsy Rawls captures the 7th Annual Triangle women’s round robin, beating Louise Suggs for top honors in a tourney marked by fine play, including some breath-takingly long putts.

FIRST FREE FLIGHT OF X-15:
The X-15 rocket plane that may be the first to carry a man into outer space and return goes aloft under the wing of its giant mother plane for its first free flight, gliding 7 miles to earth.

HUDSON CELEBRATION:
New York celebrates the 350th Anniversary of the discovery by Henry Hudson of the great river that bears his name. Units of the Second Fleet fill the harbor as Vice-President Richard Nixon, Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Governor Robert Meyner and Mayor robber Wagner take part in ceremonies.

LAUNCH POLARIS-FIRING A-SUB:
At Groton, Connecticut, the submarine “GEORGE WASHINGTON” is launched, the first nuclear powered sub designed to fire the Polaris missile, bringing into being a whole new strategy of warfare.

BEAUTIES AND THE BEASTS:
Beauties upstage the beasts at the San Diego Zoo with a fashion show drawing on the basic patterns and themes of nature. Glamor girls ranging from the sleek and pantherish to the formal, a la penguin, parade the new modes.

NEWS NOSTALGIC – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:

TORNADO RIPS MIAMI:
A night of terror and calamity in Miami, as a rare tornado smashes through the city, unroofing houses, overturning autos, and hurling telephone poles like monstrous arrows. Casualty lists top one hundred, and property damages exceeds $1 million.

COMMEMORATE ANTI-RED UPRISING:
West Berlin and all West Germany join in observances commemorating the 1953 anti-Red uprisings in East Germany. In Berlin, Mayor Willy Brandt leads wreath-laying ceremonies. Library films show the day of desperate and gallant revolt when civilian workers fought Red Army tanks and guns.

CHINESE ART TREASURES:
Some of the world’s most priceless art objects, national treasures of Free China, are removed from the air conditioned bomb-proof cave on Formosa where they have come to rest after decades of flight from China’s stormy recent history.

W-A-R-N-I-N-G “THE MUMMY” IS HERE:
An eerie herald of a new screen horror classic, Universal-International’s “THE MUMMY”, arrives in New York to begin a national tour. THE MUMMY, insured for a million dollars with Lloyd’s, is escorted by exotic Norma Maria, who bears a striking family resemblance to an ancient Egyptian Queen, and by one of Britain’s top Egyptologists.

HEEL AND TOE CHAMPIONSHIP:
In Baltimore, half a hundred heel and toers hoof it down the pike in the National AAU 20 kilometer Walking Championship. The winner strides across the line at an average 8 m.p.h., while a winded observer rides!

JUNIOR WATER-SKIING CHAMPS:
At celebrated Cypress Gardens, Fla., Junior Water-Skiing Championships, with 15 year-old Barbara Cooper and 12-year old Perry Boswell making record jumps to become pace setters for aquatic American youth.

CANADA HAILS ROYAL VISITORS:
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip begin the most extensive tour of Canada ever undertaken by British royalty. Their passage from Newfoundland, where they arrive by plane, to the St. Lawrence in Quebec, where they board the Royal yacht Brittania, is cheered by excited throngs lining the route.

POPE JOHN XXIII and RAINIERS:
A Papal audience is accorded Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco by Pope John XXIII, a 25-minute private conversation that touches off an odd rumor – quickly denied – of plans for a Vatican high seas fleet.

KHRUSHCHEV IN CANADA:
Nikita Khrushchev arrives in Niagara Falls and touches off a wave of startled confusion. Not the real Mr. K, just an amazingly life-like wax image, part of a gallery of the famous and infamous being opened here.

UPSET IN 40 GRAND HARNESS RACE EVENT:
27 thousand harness race fans see a terrific upset in the $40,000 Good Time Race at Yonkers Raceway, as under-dog Bye Bye Byrd outpaces the favorite, Speedy Pick, and stands off a terrific finish-line challenge by 14-1 Widower Creed.

NEWS NOSTALGIC – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
Events that made news in 1934, and still stir the memory. The birth of the DIONNE QUINTUPLETS, a miracle of life that thrilled the world.

EX-PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER emerges from near-eclipse to dedicate Pasadena’s MORRIS DAM. Chicago’s dazzling CENTURY OF PROGRESS EXPOSITION goes into an exciting second year.

CARDIAC PACE-SETTER:
An electric pace-setter frees a cardiac case from the near disability of an intermittent heart interruption. The portable pocket-size device, wired directly to the vital organ, will sting the patient’s heart back to life whenever it stops beating.

CRACKDOWN ON OPIUM:
Rare scenes inside a Bangkok opium den just prior to shutdown imposed by a new government ban on opium smoking. Thousands of addicts will be treated at a new State sanatorium, in an historic effort to eliminate the costly vice.

LION ON THE LOOSE:
A social evening with a British zoo keeper who takes his pal Simba out for a social evening – at home with the family, and at the pub, where Simba laps up a tankard of bitters like a regular.

“THIS EARTH IS MINE” – HAILED IN SAN FRANCISCO:
San Francisco hails the world premiere of Universal-International’s new drama of the Napa Valley, “THIS EARTH IS MINE” with civic ceremonies including the “launching” of a cable car. On had are Rock Hudson, Cindy Robbins, Jean Blake, Anna Lee, and co-producer Casey Robinson.

LE MANS AUTO CLASSIC:
The 1959 Le Mans auto classic, with 53 top contenders whittled down to 13 survivors by the blasting pace over a 24 hour stretch. Round the clock, the winners average a blazing 112 m.p.h., to cover all of 2,720 miles.

GIRL GYMNASTS:
Girl gymnasts in a display of grace, poise and precision, in an international championship meet held in Poland. A rare fusion of athletics and aesthetics in this favorite European sports event.
