REVERED DALAI LAMA SAFE IN INDIAN EXILE:
The Dalai Lama, having fled the terrors of Communist aggression in Tibet, is warmly welcomed in India by thousands of well-wishers upon his safe arrival. The God-king to Buddhist followers has been given sanctuary by Prime Minister Nehru.

CHRISTAN A. HERTER NAMED SECRETARY OF STATE:
AT Augusta, Ga., President Eisenhower formally announces the appointment of Paris-born, Harvard educated Christian A. Herter as Secretary of State. He succeeds cander-stricken John Foster Dulles who resigned.

SPECTACULAR BOLSHOI BALLET:
The Bolshoi Ballet makes its American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in a production of “ROMEO AND JULIET”. It is as lavish as Russian grandeur will allow.
49-year-old Ballet star Galina Ulanova – who was somewhat less than an ideal Juliet – found nonetheless that it was her evening. Greta Garbo and a celebrity packed house turned out for the Prokofieff presentation of “ROMEO AND JULIET”.

64-1 SHOT WINS WOOD MEMORIAL AT JAMAICA:
An unknown, Manassa Mauler – comes from behind to beat three Kentucky Derby eligibles. It is a thrilling upset we see – 1958’s a two-year-old champion, First Landing, had everyone in his corner at the start of the race. But- he placed ?’s of a length behind.

LEGALIZED BETTING at New York’s race tracks for the first time since 1909. Good news for record crowds of turf fanciers at Jamaica.

CHRISTIAN A. HERTER SWORN IN AS SECRETARY OF STATE AT WHITE HOUSE CEREMONY witnessed by practically every Cabinet member, leaders of both Parties and members of Mr. Herter’s family. President Eisenhower extols the new Secretary of State as the best man for the job of Foreign Policy Chief – and emphasizes his confidence in him. Sixty-four-year-old Mr. Herter is a former Governor of Massachusetts. And more recently under Secretary of State – assisting ailing Mr. John Foster Dulles whom the President intends to nominate for a $20,000 a year special duty job.

CUBA’S CASTRO IN NEW YORK:
The man who led the revolt against the Batista regime arrives in New York’s Penn Station and is greeted by some 20,000 cheering Spanish-speaking worshippers. He is very touched by the demonstration. Fidel gives New York’s ”finest” a real work out. Real tough assignment for the New York policemen- guarding the controversial Castro – whose secret formula for charm seems to be maximum courtesy – minimum information. But everything’s on the plus side so far.

QUEEN MOTHER OF ENGLAND AND PRINCESS MARGARET RECEIVED BY POPE JOHN IN PRIVATE AUDIENCE:
It was a very affable visit. The conversation was spoken in French. This was Margaret’s second audience with a Pope. She was received in private audience in 1949 by Pope Pius XII. Following the audience with Pope John XXIII, the Queen Mother dedicated a statue to the nineteenth-century English poet, Lord Byron, who spend much time in Italy. The statue, a joint gift by British and American nationals in Rome, was unveiled in the Villa Borghese, magnificent public park in the center of the city. The Princess visited five churches in two days in addition to visiting the Catacombs. In the evening she attended a party in Club Caballa atop an ancient three-story Inn over-looking the Tiber – where Dante, medieval Italian poet once frequented.

FOCUS-THE FURTHER USE OF THE TYPEWRITER:
In a little Spanish town – just look at this… A Civil servant proves his ingenuity as an artist of the keyboard – typewriter version. He turns out remarkably clear portraits and bucolic scenery – via typewriter keys. Something new has been added to the ever growing use of the t-----r!

BOSTON MARATHON:
A Helsinki, Finland detective, Eino Oksanen makes a stirring move a mile from the end and out ran America’s Johnny Kelley by 300 yards to win the 63rd Boston AA Marathon. It was the 13th Foreign triumph in the past 14 years. The third by a Finnish runner, in the grueling black top test dating back to Karvonen’s victory in 1954.

SUMMER STYLES – MEDITERRANEAN MOODS – BE KEEN IN A BIKINI, ETC. – Italy’s latest offerings to glamorize gals everywhere.

THE ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY IS OPENED TO SHIPPING:
Construction of the Seaway took five years. And it is the most extensive waterway cut since the Panama Canal. Over 2,000 miles inland to salt water shipping. Quite a ditch to be proud of.

TOUGH-TERRRAIN TRUCK:
The Army’s newest. A 2 ? ton job which proves its rugged durability over some troublesome terrain. The new 8-wheel truck-carrier is made of aluminum. Weighs 5,000 pounds less than the trucks presently in use.

WRAPS ARE REMOVED from a gleaming silver-and-orange – 600 m.p.h. Jet. The first of a trio of identical planes for the President and other top U.S. government officials. Its called the VC 137S. Big. Powerful. Fast. Safe. Modern. Equipped with the very latest in electronics and communications. Built at a cost of $5,500.000 – less plush than the Columbine III but that’s the way the Administration ordered it. The four-engine Jet – which extends half the length of a football field – will be for the use of President Eisenhower on long flights and will be at the disposal of high government and military men.

STYLE SHOWING IN SCENIC CURACAO:
A couple of American models delight the British West Indies vacation land with a display of fashion creations fresh from the U.S. style stables.

GERMAN GAL GYMNASTS, champion caliber, cut curvaceous hi-jinks on the horizontal bars. Real champions who look forward to the 1960 Olympics.

LAS VEGAS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS:
Mike Souchak withstood a deadly challenge by Art Wall, Jr., to win the $46,620 Tournament of Champions in dramatic style at the Desert Inn Country Club, Las Vegas. Souchak, husky native of Durham, N.C. and Grossinger, N.Y. finished the tournament like a groggy fighter. But his five over par 77 and 72-hole total of 281 was enough to beat Wall by two strokes. It was the Pocono Manor, Pa., Art Wall, Jr., who won the Masters Tournament at Augusta, Ga., three weeks ago. As second place winner of the Tournament of Champions he received $5,000.

PRIME MINISTER NEHRU MEETS WITH DALAI LAMA at the exiled God-king’s sanctuary in the Indian hill town of Mussoorie. Nehru, a man slow to anger, is sever in his criticism and denunciation of the Red Chinese Communist aggression in Tibet. Recalling when Chou En-lai, then visiting New Delhi, had assured Nehru that Peiping would honor Tibet’s sovereignty and would not force Communism on that little and deeply religious country. Events have proved the worthlessness of the Communist promise. For in bloody fashion Chou En-laid has broken not only the laws of humanity but his personal word to Nehru.

WEST’S UNITY COMPLETE ON POLICY FOR GENEVA:
At Paris, Western Foreign Ministers end their pre-Summit consultations with complete agreement. The secret Western package proposals contains some Western concessions and counter-concessions that the West expects of the Soviet Union. The Geneva meeting opens May 11. Western accord was reached without any wrangling. Nothing left up in the air. Everything’s now on paper.

PROJECT MERCURY NOSE CONE:
At a Virginia testing ground – a full-scale model of the capsule that will carry America’s first spaceman into orbit is rocketed aloft to test the parachute mechanism that is to return it safely back to earth.

EYES TO THE SKY AGAIN:
For Hawaii’s 50th Anniversary celebration of the China Clipper’s first trans-pacific flight. Back in 1935, 50,000 flights later – the hop is now routing. Here we see the first scheduled flight.

FASHION FUN:
In the Netherlands Antilles models display some versatile budget buys – that can amplify a gal’s wardrobe. Made possible by a many-splendored new synthetic material. Producing housecoats and even bare bikinis… as well as dresses, etc.

CHILDREN’S HOUR AT CANADIAN ZOO:
With Mr. Penguin acting as host. He is in “formal attire” and lends dignity to the occasion. His guests include Cubs, Kittens, Baby Monkeys – all having a wonderful time in a mirthful mélange of merriment.

FOREIGN INVADERS OF PANAMA SURRENDER unconditionally. The Organization of American States – a five-nation investigating commission, supervised the surrender at the rebel-held “beachhead” – village of Nombre de Dios. Surrender came just one week after rebels who had organized and sailed from Cuba – landed on the Caribbean Coast of the tiny Panamanian Republic. Panamanian authorities knew the Inter-American alliance would restore peace – so they did not engage the invaders in battle. But surrounded the rebel-held bridgehead with National Guards and kept the invaders at bay. Thanks to the OAS there was no bloodshed.

SECRETARY OF STATE CHRISTIAN A. HERTER REPORTS TO PRESIDENT EISENHOWER AT HIS GETTYSBURG FARM immediately upon his return from the Foreign Ministers meeting in Paris where plenty of progress was made. Mr. Herter distinguished himself impressively.

SHE’S A FAIR FIFTY:
Holland salutes the 50th Birthday of their beloved Queen Juliana. It’s a jubilant celebration with scores of thousands gathering informally to cheer the monarch and to place bouquets before the Palace.

MAGNIFICENT MONTY VISITS MOSCOW:
The retired British World War II commander, Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery had two conferences with Nikita S. Khrushchev in as many days. He said their talks were interesting. Frank. Friendly and in a good atmosphere. His visit to Moscow, an unofficial call – was to learn what he could do to help improve East-West relations. He now has a better concept of what we are up against.

AT FAIRGROUNDS COLISEEUM, INDIANAPOLIS, FLOYD PATTERSON, 24, beats branding blows to Britain’s challenger, Brian London before delivering an 11th round coup-de-gras. A warm-up for his coming bout with Sweden’s Ingemar Johansson, in Yankee Stadium June 26. It’s going to take some doing to lift the Heavyweight Title from Floyd Patterson.

A DERBY WITH CLASS – AT THE DOWNS:
In the 85th Run For The Roses one of the most thrilling in Kentucky Derby history – its TOMY LEE! English-bred colt owned by Fred Turner, Jr., Midland, Texas. A cattle and oil man. Willie Shoemaker (another Texan, El Paso) rode Tomy Lee from behind to beat Sword Dancer by a nose. There was some bumping in the stretch – the two leading colts came together at the five-sixteenths pole – on the final turn. A foul was disallowed. TOMY LEE - $119.650 first money. Sword Dancer; $25,000 second money. On to the Preakness.

CHURCHILL VISITS IKE’S FARM:
A high point of Sir Winston Churchill’s three-day visit with Ike is a visit to Gettysburg, the President’s farm and the historic battleground. Sir Winston sporting a ten-gallon hat and big cigar, is chauffeured by Ike himself in a tiny electric cart, on a lively tour in spite of his 84 years.

SHAH & QUEEN:
A royal welcome for a royal visitor. Queen Elizabeth and top British dignitaries greet the Shah of Iran, whose arrival draws curious throngs. Reportedly, the hadsome, eligible Shah seeks a wife on his European tour.

UNION SHOW:
In San Francisco, the Golden Anniversary AFL-CIO Union Trade Show in which members of every craft proudly show their contributions to America’s life and economy.

ROBOT HELICOPTER:
The Navy’s newest sub-killer is tested, a helicopter that flies from a destroyer, “kills” a mock target returns and lands, all while the man aboard reads a book! In service, the remote controlled ‘copter will need no crew.

BALMAIN INVADES ITALY:
Pierre Balmain, one of the kingpins of haut couture, invades Italy, to challenge the great rivals of Parisian style leadership with a stunning collection of evening wear.

CYCLE CLIMBERS:
At Modesto, California, the Modesto Cycle Club’s annual assault on the steep sides of Ospital Canyon. Motorcycle mania, and luckily no mayhem as the handlebar jockeys storm the near vertical slopes.

AUTO CIRCUS:
French drivers, noted for wild antics in normal traffic show how hair’s – breadth things can get in a fantastic auto circus that culminates in an incredible feat of two wheel driving that must be seen to be believed!

GENEVA PARLEY OPENS AFTER SOVIET DELAY:
The pre-Summit meeting of Foreign Ministers in Geneva formally opens after a delay of hours caused by the Soviet demand that East Germany be recognized as a bargaining equal. The impasse is resolved by a delicate balance of protocol, and talks on the problem of Germany begin.

SHAH AT OPERA:
Opera at its most grand and glittering in London. The visiting Shah of Iran attends together with the Queen and the Royal Family, and every notable of Britain from Prime Minister MacMillan on down, all in their most dazzling finery.

VIVIAN BLAINE WEDS:
A surprise wedding makes show business headlines as Vivian Blaine, star of stage and screen, marries Milton R. Rackmil, industrialist and top entertainment industry executive.

BIKES FOR HEALTH:
Ike’s heart specialist, Dr. Paul Dudley White, leads a bicycle crusade from Cambridge to Boston, dramatizing the cause of safe and practical exercise to better the nation’s health.

NOSTALGIC NEWS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
25 Years Ago Today – Political turbulence in CUBA. Police and troops shoot down crowds demonstrating against the BATISTA-dominated government.

Financier SAMUEL INSULL is returned to Chicago to face criminal charges growing out of the collapse of his multi-million dollar utilities empire.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW YORK’S PERFORMING ARTS CENTER:
The President breaks ground to formally commence construction of New York’s Lincoln Square Art Center. In an area now largely lofts and slum tenements will rise a modern center for all the performing arts – dance, theatre and music.

VENERATION OF TWO SAINTS:
200,000 crowd St. Peter’s Square, Rome, as His Holiness Pope John XXIII prays before the caskets of St. Pius X and St. John Bosco, friends in life whose remains are united in a ceremony without precedent in memory.

MERCY HUNT IN AFRICA:
A handful of men defy the dangers of poisonous snakes, crocodiles, and fear-crazed animals in a last ditch effort to rescue wild-life from the fast rising waters behind the giant new Zambezi River dam.

NEWS NOSTALGIC – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
CHICAGO’S WORST FIRE since the Great Fire of 1871 lays waste to the Union Stockyards. Every fire-fighter in the City is called out.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER tours the modernistic Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. The President’s visit was prompted by complaints from Congress that the newest service school is too costly. He receives an honorary degree during the visit to the Academy. And in an address to the 1,000 cadets gives some words of advice from an old soldier – before flying to Denver for a family reunion.

INDIA BUILDS CITY FOR TIBETAN REFUGEES:
On a former U.S. airstrip – built to supply Free China during the War, India erects a City of thatched – roofed, bamboo huts to house the more than 12,000 Tibetans who have fled the terrors of Red Chinese repression.

KING BAUDOUIN OF BELGIUM visits America’s automobile capital – Detroit, for a first hand look at the marvels of modern automated assembly lines.

HOOFING HEIFERS IN HOLLAND:
Prize dairy cattle released into the field for the first Spring grass – react with fancy stepping in their welcome to Spring. An unusual and wonderful scene.

CAMPBELL SETS NEW SPEED MARK:
On Lake Coniston, England, speed king Donald Campbell hurtles his jet hydroplane, Bluebird III, to still another world’s speed mark. Topping his own record in a blazing exhibition of power.

ROYAL ORBIT WINS PREAKNESS:
At Pimlico, Maryland, in the world’s richest race for 3-year olds. ROYAL ORBIT comes from tail-end last place in the back stretch to win. Moving away from the favorites. An amazing 4 length triumph in one of turfdom’s blue ribbon events.
