“KITCHEN SINK” SATELLITE:
At Cape Canaveral, a towering Juno rocket hurls into orbit “Explorer VII”, carrying the most complex scientific payload, “everything but the kitchen sink”, to carry out seven key experiments in space.

“PILLOW TALK” PREMIERED:
Galas on the East and West coasts mark the debuts of U-I’s new comedy hit “PILLOW TALK”. Stars Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Thelma Ritter and Tony Randall are joined by hosts of screen notables and other dignitaries, at New York’s Palace, and the lavish new Murray Hill, where the event is a benefit for the United Nations school, and at Hollywood’s Egyptian where the premiere is marked by traditional screenland brilliance.

WILDCATS TOPPLE MINNESOTA:
At Evanston, Illinois, Northwestern stages a storybook scoring drive in the final quarter, sparked by a fourth string, 147-pound quarterback to topple Minnesota, 6-0, in one of the big Ten classics.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:
The newest marvel of aviation thrilled the nation. The wingless autogyro demonstrated its abilities in the nation’s capital. In New Jersey, a young inventor tested his flying bicycle – which fortunately never got airborne. An amazing robot was shown in New York, and heard speaking of love, robot-style! In the world of fashion, hairdos, millinery, and a fabulous fur show all made headlines.

MEXICAN PRESIDENT SEES POLITICS IN ACTION AT JOHNSON PARTY:
On the ranch of Senator Lyndon Johnson, a typically huge Texas barbecue honoring visiting President Lopez Mateos of Mexico turns into a political shindig that sends Senator Johnson’s five-gallon hat into the Presidential ring.

OPERATION SUB-SCAPE:
Off Key West, Navy volunteers test new submarine escape gear in an ascent from the greatest depth ever, a full 50 fathoms, or 302 feet. From the jaws of Davy Jones’ locker to the surface and safety.

ROCKEFELLER FAMILY VISIT:
A retired seaman and Norwegian storekeeper, Kristian Rasmussen is the guest of the Rockefeller family on their 4,000 acre Westchester estate. He’s young Steven Rockefeller’s father-in-law, just here from Norway.

MICHIGAN STATE DOWNS NOTRE DAME, 19-0:
At the M.S.U – NOTRE DAME game, Hollywood history is in the making as one of the stars of the $10 million production “SPARTACUS”, soon to be released by Universal-International, records the roar of 74 thousand fans, for sound effects use in a thrilling final scenes of the epic drama. The game itself is a thriller as Michigan State’s Spartans batter the Irish to a final 19-0 tally.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:
One of the worst storms in the area’s history ravages Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Slum clearance gets under way as Secretary of the Interior Ickes dynamites a rickety Atlanta, Ga., tenement. President and Mrs. Roosevelt pay homage at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Women in the News: Heiress Barbara Hutton, just wed to Prince Alexis Mdvani; Princess Marina of Greece soon to be wed to Britain’s Duke of Kent; rough and tumble gal footballers in Ohio. The war on crime – Chicago’s far fetched effort to thwart bootleggers with a coin in every bottle of hard spirits!

WRIGHT MUSEUM STIRS HUBBUB:
The Guggenheim Museum, last creation of the late Frank Lloyd Wright, and the most controversial building in New York City’s history, is finally opened, giving gallery goers the first look at the continuous spiral ramp that runs the height of the structure, and forms one of the most controversial features of this new showplace for modern art.

WORLD AUTO SHOW:
Britain’s annual Earls Court Motor Show gives a world-wide cross section of the automotive scene, ranging from Britain’s own ultra-luxury cars and Detroit’s newest models to Russian bids for export trade, Europe’s new “baby” cars, and the ultimate – a do-it-yourself car builder’s kit!

MOTOR POLICE SHOW:
Rome’s elite motorcycle police stage a spectacular demonstration of precision drill and free-wheeling in fancy patterns, before the President, high dignitaries and cheering grandstands.

FINGER WRESTLING:
Burly, beefy, beer-filled Bavarians knuckle down to the province’s traditional pastime of “finger-hackeln” or finger wrestling, a grunt and groan effort in which two mighty men, one finger linked through a leather loop pit their strength until one comes flying over the table.

UNBEATEN HUSKIES BOW TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA:
At Seattle, two grid titans clash – Southern California and Washington, both unbeaten. Trailing 14-0, the Huskies surge back to a 15-14 lead in the fourth period – and then Southern Cal rallies again to score and emerge one of the West Coast’s strongest teams in years.

CUBA IN CRISIS:
A rising tide of opposition confronts Fidel Castro. After anti-revolution leaflets rain on Havana from the air, and terrorist raids wound 45, killing 2, he takes to the air for a 5 hour broadcast, denouncing the United States for harboring his foes, and summoning a rally of one million peasants.

LIFE ON A POWDER-KEG:
Lublin, Poland, discovers that for 15 years its been living atop an enormous Nazi landmine – 27 truck-loads of high explosive planted in World War II but never set off. Bomb crews work round the clock for 3 weeks, under terrific tension, to end the threat of fiery doom.

VIENNA AQUARIUM:
On the shores of the Blue Danube, a new aquarium brings strange and exotic denizens of the deep to a fascinated Vienna. Ranging from squid and devil-fish to tiny but flamboyant tropical fighters, the new residents are greeted by throngs at the famed Schonbrunn Castle Zoo.

OLE MISS ROUTS ARKANSAS:
At Crump Stadium, in Memphis, one of the South’s classic gridiron rivalries ends in a rout as a red-hot Mississippi eleven downs Arkansas, 28-0.

SYRACUSE BLASTS WEST VIRGINIA:
In Syracuse, the unbeaten Orange devastates the Mountaineers of West Virginia, with a slashing, variety filled, powerhouse attack, that runs up forty-four-nothing shutout. The Orange adds luster to an already impressive record.

IKE: “NO COMMENT” ON ASTRO ATTACK:
In Havana, a quarter of a million Castro supporters mass to hear the Cuban revolutionary leader denounce the United States in a three hour speech for letting planes flown by his opposition “bomb” Havana. At his White House press conference, Ike declines to comment on Castro’s motives.

FLYING PLATFORM:
Santa Barbara, Calif. The maiden flight of a new four-propeller “flying platform” for the Army. With ample forward speed and vertical take-off and landing ability, it’s midway between the jeep and the helicopter.

GORILLA BABY:
In a Basle, Switzerland, one of the rare births in captivity of a gorilla baby, whose Dad isn’t very excited, but whose keepers are. Little Goma gets care as good or better than any human infant.

GYMNAST CHAMPIONSHIPS:
In Copenhagen, the gymnastic championships of Europe, Russia’s Titow carries off 5 out of 7 events, despite terrific performances by rivals from East and West.

WISCONSIN CLAWS OHIO:
Playing in the rain at Madison, Wisconsin’s Badgers score in every possible way, including a safety, to beat the Buckeeyes for the first time in 13 years of rivalry, 12-3.

26 DIE IN BLUE RIDGE AIR CRASH:
An intensive search for an airliner missing with 27 aboard ends just as hope is almost abandoned. The missing craft is found on a densely forested ledge in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with only one aboard still alive, trapped in the wreckage in a 36 hour ordeal.

SHAH’S BIRTHDAY:
Resplendent birthday ceremonies for the Shah of Iran, who disappoints rumor by not announcing his wedding. After receiving felicitations in the Palace, the Shah is hailed in a spectacular mass torchlight display.

VAN DOREN FACES QUIZ PROBERS:
Charles Van Doren faces the Harris Committee in the dramatic high point of the investigation of rigged and fixed quiz shows. In a moving apology to the millions whose friendship and respect he won, he retracts his earlier denials of getting help, and admits receiving the questions, and many of the answers.

“SAPPHIRE” THRILLER:
A galaxy of brilliant figures from the world of entertainment are present for the glittering “show biz” preview at New York’s Sutton Theatre of the new J. Arthur Rank thriller “Sapphire,” released by U-I.

FOOTBALL AIR FORCE TIES ARMY:
In Yankee Stadium, the inaugural of a new inter-service classic, and one of the year’s gridiron thrillers. Trailing 13-6, the Falcons surge back in the final minutes to tie up the game 13-all and narrowly miss the field goal that would win.

L.S.U. BEATS MISSISSIPPI:
At Baton Rouge, L.S.U. and Mississippi, both unbeaten and untied in a clash of titans. Ole Miss leads in the final quarter until the Tigers’ Billy Cannon explodes from the 11-yard line for a ninety yard run that wins the game for L.S.U., 7-3.

1,500 DIE IN MEXICO’S WORST STORM DISASTER:
Hurricane and floods batter central Mexico, carrying havoc from the Pacific coast where numerous ships including a 1,800 ton freighter are swamped to far inland where whole villages are wiped out by earth slides. With the death toll near 1,500 and still mounting, the grim decision is made to abandon the search for bodies, as Mexico concentrates all its resources on relief for the stricken areas.

MOBS STORM CANAL ZONE:
Panama-American relations reach a new low as nationalist mobs storm the Canal Zone. Repelled by tear gas and high-pressure hoses, they turn on U.S. business in Panama itself, and tear down the flag outside the Embassy.

POPE JOHN MARKS ANNIVERSARY:
Rites of high splendor and solemnity mark the first anniversary of the Coronation of Pope John XXIII. Twenty-thousand in St. Peter’s Basilica receive the apostolic blessing.

MIDGET POWER SCOOTER:
The closest yet to vest-pocket transportation is an Illinois student’s 12-pound power scooter. With roller skate wheels and a model airplane motor, it put-puts him to and from the campus at a miserly 100-miles per gallon.

NATIONAL HORSE SHOW:
In New York City, the 70th annual National Horse Show with the traditional display of precision horsemanship by the Royal Canadian Mounties, and breath-taking equestrian competition between Canada and the U.S.

SOUTHERN CAL DOWNS CALIFORNIA, 14-7:
Unbeaten and untied Southern Cal meets California at Berkeley, and the mighty Trojans have to rally in the fourth period to preserve their skein. The underdogs’ surprisingly tough defense, plus a seized fumble that results in a tally gives the Bears a 7-6 lead until Southern Cal’s final display of power in a pinch.

STEEL STRIKERS GO BACK TO WORK:
Across the nation, steel mills idle since the beginning of the 116 day strike rouse into activity as workers return to the job following the upholding by the Supreme Court of a Taft-Hartley Act Injunction.

HOUSTON BATTLES AGAINST DISASTER:
A giant tanker loaded with 135,000 barrels of aviation gas and fuel oil blazes fiercely after a series of midnight blasts. It’s only a stone’s throw from high octane gasoline storage tanks nearby – in the heart of an industrial and petroleum storage center. Firemen battle for 19 hours to check the flames – whose spread could mean another Texas City disaster. Tons of foamite are poured in to smother the blaze.

SOCIETY GALA AIDS CHARITY:
In Los Angeles, society leaders and Hollywood celebrities meets royalty at the Imperial Ball, in the cause of charity – the World Adoption International Fund. Guest of honor is Princess Marie Cecile of Prussia.

FOOTBALL

SYRACUSE BEATS PENN STATE, 20-18:
University Park, Pa. – The Orange powerhouse holds off a last minute drive by Penn State’s hard-playing Nittany Lions, and Syracuse emerges from the thrill packed contest the winner and the top football power in the East.

WISCONSIN TOPPLES NOTHRWESTERN, 24-19:
Titans of the Big Ten clash at Evanston, and the Wisconsin Badgers topple high-riding Northwestern, handing the Wildcats their first defeat of the season, 24-19, with a smashing second half assault.

U.S.S.R. FILM PREMIERE OPENS CULTURE EXCHANGE:
In Washington, D.C., Hollywood luminaries, members of the diplomatic corps, and high government officialdom mingle at the full-dress premiere of a new Soviet film that opens the Russian-American cultural exchange of motion pictures, to be distributed in the U.S. under Hollywood auspices.

BIGGEST SIDEWAYS LAUNCHING:
Outside Detroit, the biggest sideways launching in history. The biggest Great Lakes ore carrier ever goes down the ways sending up a spectacular wall of water that sends workmen and spectators on the opposite side scurrying.

HELI-CRANE CARRIES CAR:
In Connecticut, the newest giant experimental helicopter, a flying crane, demonstrates its mighty lifting power by carrying aloft a full size four door 1960 sedan.

HATS TO TURN MILADY’S HEAD:
Hat styles for winter shown in Rome are enough to turn milady’s head, and make the men’s heads spin. Somewhat resembling sputniks, they’re “way out”, the dizziest fashions news of the season.

THRILL FINISH IN TROT CLASSIC:
At Hollywood Park, California, seven top trotters in harness racing in the $75,000 American Trotting Classic, with one of the all-time thrill finishes as Charming Barbara at 17-1 shades Trader Horn by a whisker to win.

TEXAS SQUEAKS BY BAYLOR, 13-12:
At Austin, Texas, unbeaten Texas is nearly toppled by the Baylor Bears, who rampage through most of the game until the Longhorns recover a fumble and rally in the final minutes for a do or die scoring stampede.
