NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59051)

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER and QUEEN ELIZABETH IN GALA SEAWAY OPENING:
After a festive formal ball presenting Montreal at its most scintillating, Queen Elizabeth is joined on the royal yacht Britannia by President Eisenhower for a gala international ceremony formally opening the St. Lawrence seaway, an historic occasion observed with ceremonial splendor and nautical enthusiasm.

68 DIE IN ITALY AIR DISASTER:
All aboard an America-bound airliner die within minutes of take-off from Milan when the giant craft, flying through a violent thunderstorm, breaks up and burns in mid-air. Firemen can do no more than douse the flames and remove the bodies.

NEW LANDING LIGHTS:
At Dow Air Force Base, Maine, the Air Force tests a new all-weather landing system, using high-intensity “Narrow Gauge” lights to identify the runway for a test jet coming down in dense fog! The result a perfect, on-the-beam approach.

POPE JOHN XXIII AND PRESIDENT DE GAULLE:
A warm and gratifying finale to French President Charles De Gaulle’s successful State visit to Italy comes at the Vatican where, after a welcome of traditional pomp and ceremony, he enjoys a cordial audience with the Pontiff.

RED FAIR OPENS IN NEW YORK:
The Soviet Exhibition of Science, Technology and Culture opens in the Coliseum, an impressive panorama of Soviet advances in many fields topped off by scale models of the Red space satellites. Frol R. Kozlov, number 3 man in the Kremlin, flies in, setting a non-stop record from Moscow, aboard a new Soviet turbo-prop, the world’s largest commercial airliner. Climaxing the eventful day is an impromptu visit by President Eisenhower to greet Kozlov and see the show.

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER HONORS GENERAL MAXWELL TAYLOR
GREETS KOZLOV:
President Eisenhower continues the busy pace that earlier took him on a flying visit to the Red Fair in New York. At the White House, he confers the Distinguished Service Medal on retiring Army Chief of Staff Maxwell D. Taylor, then greets the Soviet’s First Deputy Premier Kozlov for informal cold war conversations.

LIONS PARADE:
Members of Lions International holding their annual convention in New York mark the occasion with a spectacular parade, in which all parts of the U.S. and 99 foreign nations take part.

VISIT TO WILL ROGERS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL:
The annual visit of officers and directors of the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital affords a glimpse of the activities of the famed Saranac Lake, New York, institution, the entertainment industry’s own. Many of the leading figures of the entertainment industry are on hand for a report of continuing achievement.

AVANT GARDE AUTOMATION:
A new revolution rocks the world of avant-garde art. Paris’ left bank is a-buzz over an incredible looking new mechanical artist that turns out incomprehensible modern art at a brisk clip, to the amazement of onlookers.

FASHION-STRAWAS IN THE WIND:
Fashion conscious femmes are flipping their wigs over rakish new raffia wigs – jauntily simulating in straw – every coiffure from the pigtail to the “wind-blown” look.

COMMAND PERFORMANCE OF QUEEN’S PLATE STAKES:
Canada’s turf classic, the Queen’s Plate Stakes, marks its 100th year with an appearance by the Queen herself. All the colorful pomp of an Ascot opening is mustered as the Queen arrives, and the race itself is Royal sport, a fast-paced thriller with the winner, New Providence, turning in one of the best performances in the history of the race.

CHICAGO’S OVATION FOR QUEEN ELIZABETH:
Chicago stages the greatest, most enthusiastic reception in the annals of the Windy City to greet Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, with a tumultuous harbor welcome and cheering throngs estimated at over a million on the shore.

STORY-BOOK WEDDING:
Belgium’s Prince Albert and lovely Princess Paola Ruffo di Calabria are wed in Brussels in civil and religious ceremonies with a storybook charm appropriate to the royal romance of the handsome young couple.

LATIN AMERICAN FIELD DAY AT WIMBLEDON:
In the Wimbledon finals, Alex Olmedo of Peru and the United States wins the world’s most famous tennis trophy with 72 minutes of flawless play against Aussie Rod Laver. Next day, Brazil’s Maria Bueno emerges as a superb contender winning the women’s singles in straight sets form California’s Darlene Hard. Two great matches in classic court competition.

NEWS NOSTALGIC – TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY:
A legendary bad-man’s reign of terror ends as JOHN DILLINGER is cut down in a gun battle with G-Men outside a Chicago movie house. Scenes show the nation-wide man-hunt following his escape from the lady Sheriff of Crown Point, and the grim ending to his incredible one-man crime wave.

BANK FAILURES No longer menaced the little depositor as Federal Deposit Insurance assured their money’s safety.

IN AVIATION the introduction of the REVERSIBLE PITCH PROPELLOR, with a demonstration of fantastic feats made possible, was to revolutionize flying. And- one gadgeteer proudly showed off a model ORNITHOPTER, a crazy craft with wings that flapped like a birds.

PREVIEW OF SPACE FOR U.S. ASTRONAUTS:
At Langley Research Center, Virginia, the 7 Astronauts chosen for America’s man-in-space program inspect developments in the passenger satellite program, and get a taste of zero-gravity in a special flight.

COLIN KELLY 3RD:
Son of America’s first combat hero of World War II, enters West Point, a distinguished name in the class of ’63, but he is there strictly on merit, after passing a competitive exam.

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE IN AFRICA:
President De Gaulle tours former French colonies in Africa, now heading towards independence. His “fence-mending” trip to meet the colonial problem comes while another crisis looms at home with the withdrawal of U.S. warplanes from French bases.

SAAR REUNITED WITH GERMANY:
The rich industrial region of the Saarland, under French economic control since World War II ends, and is reunited with West Germany in a major shift of frontiers in Free Europe.

EUROPE’S LARGEST BRIDGE:
And France’s first toll bridge, is readied for its gala dedication with a final load test. Long lines of heavily laden trucks and tankers crawl across it in an impressive demonstration.

NATIONALS WIN ALL-STAR GAME – 5-4:
The 26th All-Star Classic, at Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, turns into a see-saw slug-fest, as the Nats break a 3-all tie in the bottom of the seventh, the A’s pull ahead in the next frame, and the Nats surge back in a thrilling rally capped by Willie Mays’ booming triple.

CASTRO “RESIGNS” IN SHOW OF STRENGTH:
A flamboyant show of strength by Fidel Castro, whose “resignation” as Premier has Havana throngs demonstrating in fervent appeal to the Revolution’s leader. One result, the removal of Castro’s hand picked President, Urrutia, now out of favor with the leader. In an emotional four hour broadcast, Castro shows he is still Cuba’s “maximum leader”.

KHRUSHCHEV IN POLAND:
Nikita Khrushchev continues his Jolly Folksy tour of Poland, drawing on an amazing reservoir of amiability for Iron Curtain consumption while keeping up his power diplomacy towards the Free World, with an abrupt snub to Scandinavia.

PREVIEW OF MANNED SPACE FLIGHT:
Artist’s conception films preview the first flight of a manned craft into space beyond the earth’s atmosphere. In thrilling detail is seen the rocket plane X-15, from the moment it leaves its mother plane until it arcs through space and hurtles – to a landing.

PAMPLONA FESTIVAL:
The famous “running of the bulls” through the streets of Pamplona in the traditional prelude to the City’s classic bull-fight fiesta. It’s every man a matador for a day as the brave bulls thunder through the streets and into the arena.

U.S. – SOVIET TRACK MEET:
In Philadelphia, a re-match between American and Soviet track and field stars. As last year, in Moscow, our men and girls dominate the events, with sensational performances by Greg Bell in the broad jump, Parry O’Brian in the shot putt, and Dyrol Burleson and Jim Grelle in the metric mile.

VICE-PRESIDENT NIXON’S MOSCOW MISSION:
Vice-President Nixon briefly confers with President Eisenhower before going on to Baltimore’s Friendship Airport to board a jet for Moscow where he will tour for 11 days, accompanied by his wife and a party that includes Admiral Hyman Rickover.

WORLD’S FIRST NUCLEAR-POWERED MERCHANT VESSEL:
At Camden, N.J., Mrs. Eisenhower launches the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant vessel, N.S. SAVANNAH. When fitted out, the pioneering craft will cruise the world’s sea-lanes to dramatize President Eisenhower’s “atoms-for peace” program.

BOY SCOUT JAMBOREE:
12,000 Boy Scouts from 54 lands meet in the Philippines for the 10th World Jamboree, the first ever held in Asia. A spirited and impressive march-past marks the opening, to defy a persistent drizzle.

MISS UNIVERSE PARADE:
Long Beach welcomes pulchritudinous visitors from every corner of the world, the beautiful contenders for this year’s “Miss Universe” crown, with a gala parade.

MID-SUMMER FUR PREVIEW:
The calendar says mid-summer, which on the fashion calendar means time to preview furs for the coming season. At New York’s Cloisters, the Young Designers Collection for next Fall is modeled – coats, boleros, shrugs, in a stunning array of styles and skins.

JUMP DERBY:
Under a broiling sun, a stunning, near-incredible series of performances on a grueling course marks Hamburg’s “Jump Derby”, one of the world’s elite Equestrian events.

NIXON IN U.S.S.R.:
Highlights of Vice-President Nixon’s tour of the Soviet. His party views the Reds’ nuclear-powered ice-breaker “Lenin”, after a clash over whether the visitors are being permitted the same close inspection granted Kozlov of America’s nuclear ship, earlier. On many of his points of call, Nixon is greeted by Hecklers, primed with anti-American questions.

HAWAIIAN ELECTIONS:
The Fiftieth State goes to the polls in its first election since admission to the Union, with top posts at stake including 2 Senate seats and one in the House. Two of the three sent to Capitol Hill are of Asian descent, reflecting the colorful melting pot that is Hawaii.

HOVERCRAFT SKIMS CHANNEL:
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the first flight across the English Channel, Britain’s saucer-shaped “Hovercraft” skims from Calais to Dover, only inches above the surface.

FASHIONS:
The bright and light look for Fall – in London, new ladies’ suits and luxury gowns, and in Milan the new continental look for the men, with buttons that glow!

SPORTS:
On Chincoteague Island, Virginia, the Annual Wild Horse Round-Up. The quarry are the great herds of feral ponies descended from Spanish mustangs cast ashore in the 16th century, and the round-up is an exciting carnival of action and excitement.

IKE and KHRUSHCHEV TO EXCHANGE VISITS:
In a special press conference, President Eisenhower announces plans for a dramatic exchange of visits with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev this Fall, to “further the cause of peace”.

AIR COMMANDOS:
Spanish paratroops in thrilling maneuvers, plummeting from the heights into Casa de Campo Lake. The Captain of the elite corps is snagged in a tree-top and shows the steel-nerved calm of a torero while waiting rescue.

BATTLE OF FLOWERS:
A Mediterranean-style carnival in the English Channel. The Isle of Jersey’s “Battle of the Flowers” wins fame for its lavish color and high spirits.

P.G.A. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP:
In the P.G.A. tourney in Minneapolis, Bob Rosburg, a pro rated with hardly a chance at the first tee, comes through under terrific pressure with a 4-under-par last round to win the coveted crown.

INTERNATIONAL TROT:
The first International Trot, at Roosevelt Raceway, lives up to all the advance glamour. Jamin, the artichoke-eating French champion comes from behind in the stretch, after breaking stride and losing ground on the first turn. It’s a terrific duel to the finish between top international trotters as Jamin crosses the line first by half a length.
