NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1959 (UE59091)

HAWAII VOLCANO IN NEW ERUPTIONS:
The spectacular series of eruptions of Hawaii’s Kilauea goes into a violent new phase, commenced by a sport of lava 1,000 feet high that showers tourist planes overhead with rocks. As an unending river of fire pours forth, volcanologists say Kilaueau is at its most violent ever, and “completely unpredictable.”

GIANT CRANE:
New Yorkers crane at the world’s largest construction crane, a looming 310 feet, which is topping off a new apartment house. It effortlessly lifts giant buckets of cement 30 stories to the top.

ART TREASURES:
In Dresden, East Germany, a rich trove of priceless and historic art treasures, including some of the world’s fabled gems, goes on exhibition after restoration by the Red Army.

TURKEY TIME:
At a Maryland farm, some 2,000 handsome Toms are culled for the finest specimens, to grace the holiday tables of the President and Vice President. The strutting gobblers are their usual selves, quite unmoved by the great cranberry controversy.

WINTER FASHIONS:
At Garmisch, one of the world’s finest winter sports centers, a showing of winter wear for town, for casual wear and for sports, from the Continent’s finest designers.

CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING IN CANADA:
In Toronto, Canada’s heavyweight champ George Chuvalo and lightheavy Yvon Durelle, champ of Canada and the British Empire, trade leather in a action filled bout that sees the rugged and game Durelle floored four times before he is finally kayoed.

NATIONAL SHRINE IS NEW CAPITAL LANDMARK:
With ancient rites of pomp and splendor, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, largest Roman Catholic church in the country, is dedicated. The huge Byzantine-style church with its gleaming dome and dramatic bell tower is a majestic new Washington landmark.

TEN OLD MASTERS FOUND:
A fabulous discovery of old masters is reported from the home of a California TV repairman. Family heirlooms, the classic paintings are claimed to be worth millions – but already controversy is stirring among art experts.

YOKOHAMA SUBURB SHATTERED BY BLAST:
A Yokohama chemical factory explodes with staggering violence. An entire suburb is devastated – hundreds injured. Firemen keep flames from spreading to another 100 tons of TNT stored nearby.

UCLA TOPPLES USC – 10-3:
The Bruins of UCLA topple Southern Cal’s mighty Trojans from the ranks of the unbeaten, aided by an interference call on USC’s interception of a 46-yard pass, that puts UCLA in scoring position for the key TD.

HARVARD BEATS YALE – 35-6:
In New Haven, Harvard wins the Big 3 title and racks up its greatest score against Yale in 44 years. The Crimson 11 turns the game into a rout, scoring three times in quick succession in the final period.

CARGO PLANE CRASHES INTO RESIDENTIAL AREA – 11 DIE:
Eleven die in a holocaust of shattered houses and twisted wreckage when a cargo plane returning to Chicago’s Midway Airport with engine trouble crashes in a residential neighborhood, just before dawn.

“GEORGE WASHINGTON” SEA TRIALS:
The A-Sub, “George Washington” leaves Groton, Conn., for its first sea trials. The first films at sea of the new craft – America’s first fleet ballistic missile submarine, designed to fire the Polaris missile.

SHAH’S FIANCEEE HAILED IN IRAN:
At Teheran, dignitaries and well-wishers crowd the airport to greet Farah Dibah, 21-year old beauty who will wed the Shah. She returns from Paris with 51 pieces of luggage, a trousseau fit for a Queen.

ILLINOIS CONQUERS NORTHWESTERN, 28-0:
The fighting Illinois shatter Northwestern’s hopes for the Big 10 title and a Rose Bowl bid. Holding the Wildcats scoreless, Illinois scores once in every period, spearheaded by Johnny Counts and Bill Brown in a 28-0 scoring spree.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:
A GOLD RUSH in Mojave, California has fortune seekers pouring in, recalling the fabulous boom of ’49.

In Chicago, kids join the President’s WAR ON CRIME, burning all their wooden guns in a towering bonfire.

A Dufur Oregon inventor shows a gun that hurls FIRE BALLS, unfortunately not very large or very far.

England hails the ROYAL WEDDING of handsome Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece in Westminster Abbey.

And a showman’s dream comes true, as MIDGET WEDS FAT LADY – 38” high Jackie Clicken and Mildred Conti, who tips in at 425 lbs. The biggest blushing bride in a long time!

GETTING READY FOR SANTA:
In Hollywood, New York and London, pre-Yule processions and preparations. The film capital hails Santa’s imminence with a gala glittering parade featuring truly remarkable entertainment. In New York, Rockefeller Center’s annual Christmas tree is raised, a noble forest giant from Podunk (un-huh!) Mass. And London lights up high-toned Regent Street with the most brilliant festive display the British capital has ever seen.

PERSONALITITES IN THE NEWS:
POPE JOHN XXIII, shortly after celebrating his 78th birthday, performs the never before filmed rite of blessing the Lamb of god, a rare and sacred event that occurs only once in 7 years.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL celebrates his 85th birthday, and free men everywhere join in well wishes for the great statesman and leader of the West.

SHAH MOHAMMED PAHLEVI and his lovely young bride to be Farah Dibah pose in official films with the Queen Mother and Princess Shanez, daughter of the Shah by his first wife.

NAVY TORPEDOES ARMY- 43-12:
The annual inter-service classic turns into one of the most exciting upsets of this or any season, as the Tars, sparked by the pin point passing of Joe Tranchini and the sensational running of Bullet Joe Bellino, swamp the Kaydets, running up the highest score in the history of the game, 43-12!

IKE STATES HIS MISSION:
Just before departing on his historic visit to 11 nations, the President states to America the goal of his unprecedented mission, to dispel the doubts lingering abroad as to America’s good-will and peaceful intentions with all the prestige he has to muster.

MacARTHUR GETS GRID AWARD:
At the annual dinner of the National Football Foundation, General Douglas MacArthur emerges from his secluded retirement to receive the Foundation’s gold medal to the applause of a cheering array of gridiron immortals.

GATES NEW PENTAGON CHIEF:
Shortly before his departure, Ike is present as Thomas Gates is sworn in as new Secretary of Defense, succeeding the outgoing Secretary Neil McElroy.

REFUGEES TORCHLIGHT PROTEST:
In a solemn and dramatic protest against Red oppression in their homelands, refugees from Iron Curtain lands march by torchlight up the steps of Montmartre to the Sacre Couer church of Paris.

MUSIC HALL HONORS CARY GRANT:
In New York, Cary Grant receives an illuminated scroll from the world’s largest theatre, the Radio City Music Hall, on the occasion of the premiere of his newest film, U-I’s “OPERATION PETTICOAT” as the Christmas film of the famed showplace.

BOWLING MAKES NEWS:
In Chicago, 192 top bowlers compete in the World’s International Match-Game Championships. And in Wilton Manor, Florida, Don Newport makes history with a 5 day and night kegling marathon, playing a skein of 1,000 games for the new endurance championship.

FIRST LEG OF IKE’S PEACE MISSION:
Ike begins his epic three continent peace tour in Rome. Pelting rains for most of his stay keeps crowds to a minimum but the President’s visit has considerable impact. In extended consultations with Premier Segni and other leaders, paying homage at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and in audience with the Pope, the President’s intensive agenda of consultation and ceremonial sets a pattern for the remainder of his historic trip.

HUNDREDS DIE AS RIVIERA DAM BURSTS:
Near Cannes on the French Riviera, the world’s thinnest dam proves unequal to the burden of a river swollen by torrential rains. It breaks and a wall of water smashes down the valley of the Reyran River, bringing havoc and desolation.

MOB STORMS FIELD AS GIANTS TOP BROWNS:
The New York Giants win the pro Eastern Conference Championship in an awesome display of gridiron power as they down their arch rivals 48-7, but their brilliant showing is far overshadowed by the frenzied mob of fans that storms the field when there’s still 113 seconds left to play. The 20-minute fracas is the worst in any sports arena in many years.

IKE ACCLAIMED ON TOUR’S ASIAN SWING:
In Turkey and in Pakistan, President Eisenhower receives overwhelmingly enthusiastic popular receptions. Arriving in Ankara to begin a 17-hour visit, he is cheered by hundreds of thousands, and throughout his intensely busy 17 hours, in a city in festive array, he receives warm demonstrations of friendship. In Karachi, another stupendous reception marks what is one of the most momentous events in Pakistan’s 12-year history. Ike sees and enjoys the sights and sounds of the fabled and spectacular East.

POPCORN STUFFING:
Popcorn not for eating but for stuffing packages to prevent breakage of fragile and delicate lamps in an innovation at a New York plant. Hundreds of pounds are popped daily, to protect the product and delight the packers.

HYDROFOIL ON VOLGA:
Russian engineers run a radical craft down the Volga – no doubt startling the legendary boatman. It runs almost completely out of the water, on hydrofoils, at speeds of 50 m.p.h. Big enough to carry 150 passengers, it’s a local sensation.

L.S.U.’s BILLY CANNON GETS HEISMAN TROPHY:
At ceremonies in New York City, Vice-President Nixon presents the Heisman Trophy to America’s top collegiate football player of the year, L.S.U.’s Billy Cannon. Scenes recall one of the season’s most spectacular plays, an 87-yard runback by Cannon against Ole Miss.

INDIA GIVES IKE GREATEST ACCLAIM:
The President’s Mission of Peace and Understanding brings him to India, most populous of the world’s democracies, where he spends 4 momentous days and receives tribute and acclamation that outdoes even his sensational earlier receptions in Turkey and Pakistan. On arrival, opening the Agricultural Fair and at every public background, against a dazzlingly colorful setting of the ancient land of the moguls, Ike scores a brilliant triumph.

YULE GREETINGS FROM EMBASSY TOTS:
In Washington, D.C., the children of the various embassies, colorfully garbed in their national costumes, join to sing season’s greetings to all America!

ROUND-UP TIME IN CANADA:
North of the border, it’s round-up time on Canada’s largest ranch, where the spirit of the Old West lives on. On the 510,000 acre spread, hard-riding cowpokes drive fast herds to winter ranges throughout the great panorama of the last western frontier.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:
Twenty-five years ago, JAPAN DENOUNCES NAVAL TREATY, withdrawing from the 1922 Washington Pact that limited the size of Nippon’s war fleet.

LADY PILOT Helen Richey becomes the first to fly the mail. Olympic swimming queen ELEANOR HOLM JARRETT tops her own mark in a Miami meet.

AMELIA EARHART conquers the Pacific in an historic flight from Hawaii.

MRS. ROOSEVELT goes Christmas shopping for the White House family.

And – in Rome, motorists buddy up to the traditional foes, the traffic cops – really living up to the spirit of “good will toward men”.

IKE’S MISSION CONTINUES:
Ike’s mission passes the halfway mark and in one eventful day brings him from India to the shores of the Mediterranean. In Athens, he receives a fervently enthusiastic reception on a par with those at every earlier stop on his route. Earlier, in Iran, his motorcade through Teheran was cheered by vast throngs as it rolled over Persian carpets strewn in the streets.

VENERATED RELIC SHOWN:
In the ancient German city of Trier, American Air Force personnel are among those privileged to view a sacred relic – a vestment purported to have been worn by Christ, which has been publicly shown only three times in over a century.

ODD-BALL FLYING MACHINES:
At Princeton, N.J., a series of strange flying scooters and aero-mobiles go through their paces, weird craft that bob along only a few inches off the ground, poised on drafts of air from giant fans.

ICE SHUTS DOWN HARBOR:
Poland’s busy harbor of Gdynia is paralyzed by plummeting mercury and icy winds. Every ship in the key Baltic port is sheathed with inches of tough ice. Heavy chipping ahead for the crew!

REDS REPATRIATE KOREANS:
Tumultuous scenes of departure in Japan, as 5,000 Korean refugees elect to be repatriated to Red-ruled North Korea, and police hold back South Korean sympathizers in the crowd who try to prevent the return.

SOVIET, GERMAN GYMNASTS VIE:
In Germany, a near upset as German gymnasts hold heavily favored Soviet contestants to a surprisingly narrow 6-point margin. In each event, champions show their finest in a series of awesome performances.
