ON THE WAR FRONT
HELSINKI, FINLAND – Scenes of destruction and horror, in the wake of “Red” bombing planes that have turned the city into a mass of smoking ruins. But life goes on as usual, despite repeated raids.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Help for Finland. The first of 44 pursuit planes are crated and loaded aboard the Finnish freighter, Astrid Thorden, off to aid the Finns in repelling the Soviet invasion.

SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE – A stately chateau is turned into a war hospital, where the wounded are stitched up and cared for until fit for further duty.

SCOTLAND – Graphic evidence of Britain’s blockade at sea. Scores of German freighters, captured by British warships and their cargoes confiscated, are assembled in a marine “graveyard.”

SEATTLE, WASH. – Thrilling scenes at the Boeing Aircraft factory, where 6,000 men are working night and day to turn out the huge 22-ton “Flying Fortresses,” with a new one coming off the assembly line every four days!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pres. Roosevelt in a humorous mood as he addresses $100-a-plate dinners at the Jackson Day Dinner, is silent as his 1940 plans, but twits Republican leaders for not attending.

DEWEY FORGETS 1940 FOR DAY
PAWLING, N.Y. – The “racket-busting” Republican aspirant for the presidency doffs his political garb for a day, with his family at “Dapplemere Farm,” where he frolics in the snow with his two sons and “Bounty,” the pet dog.

FILM STARS AID PARALYSIS FUND
HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. – Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, young favorites of the silver screen, do their bid in aiding the “March of Dimes,” the infantile paralysis fund drive, and ask everyone to do likewise.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – Topping a field of crack links champs with some amazing putting. Lawson Little “holes out” with a beautiful “282” to win the $1500 L.A. Open, although handicapped by a wet course.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Little tough guys in a big show! The 1940 Golden Glove tourneys, featuring amateurs with “professional” enthusiasm for swapping hard “rights,” start with knock-outs and thrilling slug-fests.

ATLANTA, GA. – Snow on palm trees in Dixie! Amazing scenes in the sunny (?) South, where the worst Winter on record piles up deep drifts and causes untold misery!

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Terrific winds and blizzards isolate hundreds of homes and block all ralds leading to this lake-side city.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The famous cataract is a mass of ice! Utility company crews blast the ice floes to get water for their power plants.

SANDUSKY, OHIO – Sub-zero weather proves a boon for fish-shipping business. Thousands of tons of ice are “harvested,” to be stored for Summer use.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Old Man Winter turns the Logan Square fountain into a frozen spray of crystal. The statue’s nymphs are left icy-cold!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Colorful scenes as a thick mantle of snow adds lustre to the Capital’s famous monuments, shrines and other buildings.

IN NORTH SEA – The Allied blockade at work! Warships of the French contrahand control tighten the economic strangle-hold on Germany by seizing thousands of tons of cargoes heading for the Nazi war machine.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Bishop John O’Hara leads memorial rites for Father Duffy, famed chaplain of the Fighting 69th at the Duffy Statue in Times Square. James Cagney and Pat O’Brien, appearing in a motion picture based on the regiment, take part in the ceremonies.

KIDS IN CHIC FASHION SHOW
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Dainty, and quite grown-up, are the latest styles in party dresses and school ensembles for the modern Miss, shown in a colorful fashion parade at Sak’s Fifth Avenue. Wearing these creations will be like “eating candy” for the youngsters.

DOG RACES THRILL SPORT FANS
MIAMI, FLA. – Thousands of Winter tourists get a kick out of the canine classics at the West Flagler Kennel Club, where the high-priced pooches set new speed records in their mad chase after the iron “rabbit.” A sport with a new zest!

NAZIS BOMB BRITISH SHIPS
ENGLAND – British fighting planes take off to fight German bombers which have bombed many vessels, including a light-ship which limps into port with holes in her decks.

An English passenger train is badly demolished in a head-on collision due to the black-out. Miraculously, not a person is killed.

FRENCH SPEED PLANE OUTPUT
FRANCE – Speedy new pursuit planes take shape at the Marcel Block plant, where women and boys work side by side with men in building a huge air fleet.

General Gamelin, Allied war chief, and General Ironside, British staff head, inspect front line positions, while heavy French guns open on German fortifications.

U.S. HAILS F.D.R. ON BIRTHDAY
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pres. Roosevelt’s 58th birthday is celebrated with a hail at the Mayflower, where the First Lady cuts a huge cake, as Gloria Jean and other film “celebs” look on. From the White House, the President broadcasts a message of thanks.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The President’s mother attends gala party, one of many whose proceeds go to the infantile paralysis fund.

RECORD ICE JAM IN OHIO RIVER
CINCINNATI, OHIO – Spectacular scenes of the worst freeze since 1918, with the huge waterway frozen over for more than 300 miles. Ferry boats are jammed in the floes further upstream, and in many places people cross the river on foot.

SNAPPY NEW BEACH WEAR SEEN
MIAMI BEACH, FLA. – For chic new bathing suits displayed by lovely “eye-fuls,” you’ll have to go far to beat this snappy style parade at the Roney Plaza. New gadgets too, to liven up the trick slacks and seaside toggery.

FIRE MASCOT BURIED WITH POMP
CHESTER, PA. – “Tippy,” doggy pal and mascot of the Franklin Fire Company, goes for his last ride. Fatally hurt when he fell “in line of duty.” “Tippy” gets a hero’s funeral as his friends, young and old, pay their last respects!

GOLDEN GLOVERS IN SLUGFEST
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Here’s action for you fisticuff fans, with young amateur hopefuls providing the thrills in Golden Glove bouts at the Odd Fellows Temple. One slugger gets knocked out of the ring, but comes back to win!
AQUAPLANE ACES TRY THE JUMPS
MIAMI, FLA. – Tops for nautical thrills! Jumping over high ramps with aquaplanes is no feat for “softies.” Aquatic cowboys provide exciting moments as they take the hurdles behind high-powered motorboats.

NOTED FINNISH ATHLETES ARRIVE
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Paavo Nurmi and Taisto Maki, famous Finn runners, arrive for a tour of the U.S. to raise funds for their country’s defense. Meanwhile, hundreds of Americans of Finnish descent sail for Finland, to lay down their lives to save the homes of their ancestors.

WATER SHORTAGE MENACES CITY
NEW YORK – Millions are faced with serious crisis if huge upstate Dams, N.Y. City’s water supply, are not fed by Winter snow and rain. The reservoirs are at the lowest depth on record, and still falling!

HIGH COURT JUSTICES CELEBRATE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes celebrates his tenth anniversary as head of the nation’s highest tribunal. Justice James Reynolds marks his 78th birthday, while Justice Frank Murphy poses in his new judicial robes.

GROUNDHOG FAILS TO SHOW UP
