CHICAGO, ILL. – The reading of President Roosevelt’s statement on the third term by Senator Barkley precipitates the landslide that sweeps F.D.R. into another race for the Presidency.

After passing upon the platform, the delegates give Roosevelt the majority of their votes on the first ballot and the other candidates yield to make his nomination “unanimous.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pres. Roosevelt, in accepting an unprecedented third term nomination, tells the nation that he had hoped to retire in 1941 but that conditions at home and abroad caused him to change his mind. Only the people can “draft” a candidate, he says.

CHICAGO, ILL. – Democrats “pick” Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture, an ardent New Dealer, to be F.D.R.’s running mate for the 1940 campaign.

BRITAIN TIGHTENS DEFENSE
As the prelude to the Battle for Britain gets underway, with swarms of bombing planes the deadly overture to the long-heralded invasion. Britain tightens her defenses. Roads are blocked and fields are plowed to prevent enemy planes from landing! Civilians are trained to rush for air raid shelters! Housewives donate pots and pans for aluminum in making more planes! Youngsters by the thousands are sent out of the country to escape Nazi bombs!

IRISH SPEED “NEUTRALITY” DEFENSE
Big coast guns, patrol planes and war ships stand guard to preserve Eire’s neutrality at all costs. They will give the Nazis a “hot” welcome if invasion comes.

LONDON, ENG. – The biggest timber-yard fire in 20 years destroys thousands of tons of lumber, with flames rising 80 feet in the air. Several firemen are overcome, as timber and huge derricks crash in flaming wreckage.
