SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE – French anti-aircraft batteries go into action – with results! A “Flying Pencil” is shot down, and the crew of three taken prisoner.

British aviators, meanwhile, take off for dangerous photographic missions over Germany – and return with valuable photos.

BRITISH DESTROY NAZI MINES
ENGLAND – Dangerous work! British naval workers “dissect” a German mine, washed ashore by a storm. One false move as they remove the detonators and high explosives – and the men would be blown sky high!

LINCOLN HONORED BY THE NATION
NEW YORK, N.Y. – As the nation pays tribute to the “Great Emmancipator.” Republicans, including Mrs. Robert Taft, attack New Deal policies and say the government is leaving a terrible debt for the next generation to pay.

NEW SALEM PARK, ILL. – Postmaster General Farley officiates as the old Lincoln Postoffice, closed many years, is re-opened.

50 DEAD AS BLIZZARD HITS EAST
The worst blizzard in many years cripples the Eastern seaboard! At least 50 persons are dead, and big cities blanketed under drifts that jam roads and stall traffic.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The snowstorm, accompanied by high winds, blocks traffic and puts the city’s snow removal machinery to a real test.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Hundreds of motorists are forced to abandon their cars as a 9-inch snow fall stalls traffic.

BOSTON, MASS. – The storm causes heavy damage here, with life at a standstill.

F.D.R. OFF ON “MYSTERY” CRUISE
PENSACOLA, FLA. – Pres. Roosevelt has the nation guessing as he sails on the cruiser “Tuscaloosa” for a sea trip of unannounced destination. Later the President’s ship stops at Panama for a brief inspection of defenses.

POMP MARKS TWEEDSMUIR RITES
OTTAWA, ONT. – Impressive scenes as Canada, and the World, mourn the beloved Governor General at stirring last rites in Parliament and at St. Andrews Church. Thousands pay last respects before the Funeral train departs.

REPUBLICANS PICK PHILADELPHIA
WASHINGTON, D.C. – With high hopes for victory in November, G.O.P. leaders meet at the Willard Hotel and choose the “City of Brotherly Love” for their 1940 convention. Chairman John Hamilton announces the date as June 24th.

U.S. PEACE ENVOYS SAIL ON REX
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Diplomatic missions of far reaching import. Under Sec’y of State Sumner Welles sails on the S.S. Rex to discuss war and peace moves with the belligerents. Myron Taylor also embarks as F.D.R.’s envoy to Pope Pius.

U.S. WAR AMBULANCES BLESSED
PARIS, FRANCE – Twenty ambulances, donated by American Legion members and other Americans in France, are blessed in quaint ceremonies at the American Church, before being turned over to the French.

LIFEGUARDS IN BEAUTY CONTEST
MIAMI, FLA. – Florida’s pretty bathing lassies turn the tables on the beach “Tarzans,” with a lifeguard beauty contest that’s a wow! The winner gets a facial, manicure, hair curl – and plenty of dates!

YOU CAN’T CHEAT A CHEETAH!
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Mr. and Mrs. Armand Denis, well-known explorers, arrive home with two “tame” cheetahs, brought back from a recent expedition. The critters seem like nice pets – but they forget their manners over a raw steak!

TAMPA, FLA. – Big names from the “Big Leagues” – in a big time links tourney! The Fourth Annual Baseball Players match, with your old favorites showing their skill with clubs, not hats! Wes Ferrell of the Dodgers cops the award!

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Did you ever see a moose climb stairs? Well, one does at the Sportsman Show at Grand Central Palace, where a colorful cavalcade of sports is presented – log-rolling, fishing, and even trained seals and real Indians.

OAKLAND, CAL. – The Golden Bears take to the water for Spring training under Coach Ebright. The champions are getting in shape for a season, with Washington’s “Huskies” their chief rivals.

BOSTON, MASS. – The new airplane carrier, U.S.S. Wasp, latest addition to Uncle Sam’s “flying fleet,” leaves the South Boston dry-dock for exhaustive trials off Rockland, Maine. A thrill for all Americans!

KING AND QUEEN REVIEW TROOPS
ALDERSHOT, ENGLAND – Klag George and Queen Elizabeth get a royal ovation as they inspect various units at the big army base. Cold weather keeps the “boys” stepping, but the Queen’s smile warms their hearts.

LEBRUN INSPECTS NAVAL BASE
SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE – President LeBrun visits the French “Sea Front” – to review the men and ships. Awards for heroes, and plaudits for the fighting craft.

CHOP WOOD TO HELP WIN WAR
SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND – All the way from Newfoundland – to help Britain’s economic front! North American lumberjacks are hard to work in English forests, cutting valuable timber and making their own log cabins.

AQUARIUM GETS SPRING CLEANING
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – “Marineland” the famous aquarium where fish, porpoises turtles and other sea life attract thousands of tourists – gets it annual cleaning. Divers descent to feed the porpoises and scrub the turtles’ backs!

NEW YORK, N.Y. – “Papa” takes his three young daughters to Sally Victor’s to see Milady try on hats for Easter. That’s where he made his mistake. Even a 7-year old Miss has that feminine instinct for swanky headwear.

FINLAND – Flames of war sweep over Helsinkl! Russian bombers leave a trail of fire-gutted homes in their wake, but many are shot down!

ENGLAND – The British cruiser “Ajax,” victor in the epochal Graf Spee battle, returns home. It’s captain and crew get a tremendous ovation!

SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE – Spectacular scenes as French patrols fight their way through heavy snow to attack enemy positions. Meanwhile, huge 16-inch trench mortars open up on Nazi forts!

IN THE ATLANTIC – French battleships and smaller warships safely escort a merchant convoy through waters infested with U-Boats!

NEW ARMY PLANE HOVERS IN AIR
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The Air Corps’ newest observation plane – a tiny craft with special wing flaps, can fly almost straight up and then “hover” in the air at 25 M.P.H. It’s trial flight will amaze you!

CIRCUS ANIMALS LOST IN FIRE
ROCHESTER, IND. – Smoking ruins is all that’s left of the Cole Brothers’ Circus winter quarters, where hundreds of animals were trapped in their cages and burned to death. A tragic fate for circus favorites.

HUGE BOMBING PLANE TESTED
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Thrilling scenes of test flights of the Army’s new Consolidated bomber – a four-motored giant with a wing span of 110 feet. The craft has a top speed of over 300 M.P.H. and can carry 4 tons of bombs!

VENEZUELAN EMBASSY OPENED
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The beautiful new embassy on Massachusetts Ave. is host on its gala opening day to Colonel Medina, Venezuelan army and navy chief, who is visiting the U.S. Ambassador Escalante and his family greet him.

GIRLS UP A TREE OVER ART!
OAKDALE, CALIF. – The almond trees are blooming! The signal for an art class of scantily clad lassies to hasten to the orchards for the first outdoor art class of the year. The paintings are only fair – but Ah, Spring!

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Chuck Fenske, outstanding mile runner of the season, repeats his recent triumphs over Glenn Cunningham in a thrilling race at the A.A.U. championships. Other spectacular events of the meet are shown!

“LONG SHOT” WINS $50,000 RACE
ARCADIA, CALIF. – A thrilling climax to a day of upsets as “Sweepida,” a 33-to-1 shot, romps away with the coveted Santa Anita Derby, leaving the favorites far behind. A victory that left turf fans breathless!

ON THE WAR FRONT
FINLAND – American volunteers, supported by funds from the U.S. drive ambulances at the front! Their work has saved countless lives.

A new Russian Mystery Bomb, eight feet long and used as a container for incendiary bombs, is discovered intact. These have caused most of the country’s horrible fires following air raids.

What these bombs can do is shown in an unnamed village just after the raiders have flown away. Fortunately, many inferior bombs failed to explode.

ENGLAND – Three Nazi fliers, shot down by the R.A.F., receive a military funeral. Meanwhile how England has sharply cut her shipping losses during recent weeks is vividly illustrated in these pictures of mine-sweepers at work.

FRANCE – For the first time since the war began, President Albert Lebrun visits the British Expeditionary Force with their chief, General Gort.

SAVE STARVING IN CHINA
SHANGHAI, CHINA – During the worst cold wave in twenty years, the Salvation Army feeds thousands of war refugees who have flocked to the city. Still, hundreds freeze to death each night – grim reminder of a forgotten war.

NEW AIR SAFETY DEVICE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new fire extinguisher to smother fires while the airplane is in flight is demonstrated in Washington. Expelling carbon dioxide, this new safety measure conquers one of flying’s greatest hazards.

THEY’RE STILL IN THE LEAGUE!
CLEARWATER, FLA. – The National League Brooklyn Dodgers try to get in shape early as they open Spring training. The players are taking those excess inches off their waist lines and limbering up muscles before they head north.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Everything you would want in the way of Spring fashions is shown in this group of new styles. All the gowns are of Swiss fabrics – materials that will appeal to all tastes and to all ages.

AN ENTIRE TOWN GOES FISHING
KELSO, WASH. – Once a year hordes of smelt make their way up the Columbia River to spawn and then young and old turn out for a fisherman’s field day. Each person is limited to a 20 pound catch and has no trouble getting his limit.

WELL, DO YOU WANNA WRESTLE?
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Maurice (The Angel) Tillet, a Frenchman termed the ugliest man in the world, grunts his way to victory in his big city wrestling debut. His wrestling technique, at that, is not as bad as it looks.

FINLAND – Soviet air raiders meet their doom when Finnish gunners bring down several huge Russian bombing planes.

In the far north, Lapland Finns round up the reindeer, to make warm coats for the soldiers.

For the “proletariat”! Finns broadcast propaganda messages at the “Red” front lines, in the war of words!

ENGLAND – Victory parade for crews of the cruisers “Ajax” and “Exeter,” heroes of the Graf Spee battle. King George salutes the victors!

EGYPT – Newly-arrived “Anzac” forces visit the Sphinx and Pyramids, before starting Near East war maneuvers.

BIGGEST LINER ARRIVES IN NEW YORK
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The S.S. Queen Elizabeth, sistership of the Queen Mary, reaches port after dodging U-Boats on a daring ocean crossing from England. The great luxury liner is expected to remain here for the duration of the war.

13 DIE IN MEXICAN TRAIN WRECK
LAS ADJUNTAS, MEXICO – Incredible scenes of wreckage and horrow after an express train crashed head on into a freight, killing thirteen and injuring scores. Shattered cars are graphic evidence of the terrible tragedy!

MISS FLORIDA 1940 CHOSEN
MIAMI BEACH, FLA. – Pretty Cecille Perkins wins the coveted title from a bevy of lovely “eye-fuls,” in the annual beauty parade and contest at the McFadden-Deauville Pool. A gala pageant of feminine charm and oomph!

FLAMES SWEEP LUMBER PLANT
BALTIMORE, MD. – Spectacular scenes as a $300,000 fire roars through a huge lumber yard. Three hundred firemen battle the raging inferno for hours, and many are injured as the flames rage through two entire business blocks!

CITY CAVING IN OVER COAL MINE
SHENANDOAH, PA. – Horrified residents of this coal mining town watch as their buildings and streets sink – inch by inch – into old mine shafts which run under the city. Engineers try to halt the tragic sinking!

QUAINT ITALIAN FESTIVAL HELD
VIAREGGIO, ITALY – The colorful seaside resort town is a mecca of gala floats and happy revelers as the annual Carnival opens on a note of pageantry and pomp. Amazing animated figures adorn the floats!
