INTO CHINA REDS LAUNCH DRIVE TO CUT LAOS IN TWO:
INDO-CHINA – French Union forces experience their worst military setback in the history of the 8 year old war as Red forces drive to the Siamese border, splitting the nation in two, despite powerful French resistance.

19 KILLED IN CASABLANCA BOMBING:
MOROCCO – 19 die, 30 more are wounded, some fatally, when a bomb explodes in the crowded Casablanca market place at the height of the business day. Of unknown origin, the bomb is believed to have been set by anti-government terrorists.

51 SURVIVE PLANE CRASH IN “MIRACLE”:
CANADA – The crash of a Royal Canadian Air force Transport with 51 aboard misses tragedy by a miracle as only two passengers are injured when the big plane cartwheels, rips off a wing, and bursts into flame.

SUGAR BOWL:
NEW ORLEANS – Georgia Tech and West Virginia clash with Tech quarterback rewriting the Sugar Bowl record books, as he leads the “Rambling Wrecks” to a 42-19 victory over West Virginia.

ORANGE BOWL:
MIAMI – Half a million spectators see the 20th annual King Orange Jamboree parade, and next day, watch the Oklahoma Sooners engineer a 7-0 upset of Maryland, rated the nation’s number one college team.

COTTON BOWL:
DALLAS – Rice defeats Alabama, 28-6, but the highlight of the game is a sensational tackle by Alabama’s quarterback Tommy Lewis, made from the bench to down touchdown bound Dicky Moegle. It’s thrilling – but illegal, and Rice is awarded the score.

ROSE BOWL:
PASADENA – The annual Tournament of Roses is a colorful prelude to the Rose Bowl grid classic. Michigan State, powerhouse of the Big 10, comes from behind to beat underdog UCLA, 28-20.

MUMMERS ON PARADE:
PHILADELPHIA – An estimated half a million watch the 54th annual Mummer’s Parade – a seven hour spectacle of fantasy and colorful capers by 7,500 marchers.

SNOW AND SLEET HIT WHOLE EAST SEABOARD:
The heaviest snow storm in five years blankets the entire middle Atlantic seaboard. In urban centers, traffic is at a standstill as snow buries roads and hundreds of thousands of commuters abandon cars for public transportation. But the eight inches and more of snow is a wonderful treat for the kids, after years of mild winters.

EARTH SLIDE WRECKS HOMES:
OREGON – Weakened by heavy rains, an entire hillside begins to slide in Astoria, turning a residential neighborhood into a disaster area. More than twenty families must abandon homes as pavements buckle, and foundations are crushed.

ROCKETS TEST HIGH SPEED WINGS:
CALIFORNIA – Rockets test new high-speed wing designs in unusual flight tests, ripping into the stratosphere with automatic cameras filming the wing’s reaction to super-sonic stresses.

MISS UNIVERSE WEDS:
CALIFORNIA – A Cinderella wedding for beauteous Christine Martel, Miss Universe of 1953. The seventeen year old French beauty marries department store heir Ronnie Marengo in colorful ceremonies attended by the bride’s Parisian family.

MARCH OF DIMES OPENS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – 4-year old Debbie Dains, this year’s poster boy for the March of Dimes is greeted at the White House by President Eisenhower as the anti-polio campaign is officially launched.

HOLLYWOOD ICE REVIEW BOWS:
CHICAGO – The 1954 edition of the dazzling Ice Revue opens, with Barbara Ann Scott reigning over show, telling the story of Goldilocks on skates. Among other stellar acts are the Lavonnes with a torrid dance routine.

EX-KING FAROUK IN ALPS:
AUSTRIA – Candid scenes of Egypt’s former playboy King, surreptitiously filmed as he greets guests in the courtyard of Mittersill Castle in Salzburg – a royal figure in ski clothes.

SKI CHAMPIONS MEET:
AUSTRIA – Jumpers from seven countries meet in the Tyrolean Alps for the German-Austrian title. Norway’s favored Olaf Bjornstad jumps 285 feet, but Austria’s Sepp Bradl touches down at 300 feet for the title and a new meet record.

BARREL JUMPING:
NEW YORK – The 1954 barrel jumping championship gets off to a bone crunching start as contestants unseat themselves in rapid order. Terry Brown of Detroit skates – or leaps – off with the title, clearing 14 barrels in a 25 feet 11 inch jump.

JET LEAVES TRAIL OF FIERY DEATH:
CALIFORNIA – Seven people are killed when a Sabre jet crashes in a landing approach after a super-sonic training flight. Smashing into a residential area at five hundred miles an hour spraying flaming fuel oil, and completely destroying two houses.

MEDALS OF HONOR AWARDED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the White House, President Dwight De. Eisenhower presents the Medal of Honor to Lieutenant Edward Schowalter, Private Ernest West, and Navy hospital corpsman William Charette, all veterans of Korean combat.

FIRST JET TURBINE CAR TESTED:
ARIZONA – America’s first jet turbine auto-mobile is tested. Styled after the supersonic Skyray fighter, it’s completely experimental. Driven by racer Mauri Rose, it reaches the scorching speed of 200 mph.

INTERNATIONAL DOLL SHOW:
ITALY – Dolls of 36 nations are put on display for the benefit of the Italian Red Cross and the delight of dazzled throngs of youngsters. Dancing dolls, and dolls in many colorful costumes thrill the little ones.

FROGMEN TRAIN IN RHINE:
FRANCE – NATO troops undertake a new kind of operation in the Rhine River as frogmen slip off fast-moving craft to practice bridge sabotage – and are picked up by vessels traveling at top speed – a tricky feat.

LIVING ROOM LION:
ILLINOIS – There’s a lion in the living room of the Porter family. The pet of daughter Bobby, who raised the 325-pound jungle cat from a cub, his cage is right in the living room. He’s practically one of the family.

SPORTS

GOLDEN GLOVES:
NEW YORK – Thrills and some spills in the ring as the Golden Glovers square off. In these sub-novice bouts, there’s more vim and vigor than finesse – but there’s action every second.

INTERNATIONAL SKI MEET:
SWITZERLAND – Top skiers from France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland compete for the Lauberhorn trophy, a top European meet. A sizzling slalom race and a breathtaking downhill event end with the Austrians taking the trophy.

UNDERWATER BOXING:
FLORIDA – The world’s first underwater boxing bout at Silver Springs, with pretty bathing girls for referees and Davey Jones as cameraman. Boxers Mike Bass and Willie Salmon flounder around in these fishy fisticuffs.

COLUMBUS WELCOMES GEN. DEAN:
GEORGIA – General Dean is the guest of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, receiving a hero’s welcome in a mammoth parade through the city. Later the Korean hero is feted at a dinner by the C. of C.

HUNDREDS BURIED IN EUROPEAN AVALANCHES:
Avalanches bring devastation and death to the Alpine nations of Europe, 700 villages are isolated, over 150 killed, hundreds injured as tons of snow and rock hurtle into the valleys. U.S. helicopters fly relief supplies and rescue workers to the area – where grim scenes o the mountain-dwellers’ ordeal are filmed.

FRENCH PRESIDENT INVESTED:
PARIS – Solemn ceremonies in the glittering, golden Salon of Ambassadors at the Elysee Palace invest Rene Coty – virtually unknown a month ago – as the 19th President of France.

BIGGEST TROOP HELICOPTER:
BRIDGEPORT – Secrecy is relaxed on the newest Marine helicopter, the twin-engined Sikorsky XHR2S, capable of carrying two combat squads and such heavy guns as 105mm howitzers.

SERUM FLOWN TO AUSTRIAN BOY:
AUSTRIA – A helping hand from the U.S. rescues little Gottfried Eder from death of dread hemophilia. Bleeding is halted when anti-hemophiliac globulin is flown from the U.S. at the request of the local U.S. Information office chief.

MOTOR BOAT SHOW:
NEW YORK – New boats of all sizes, types and purposes are on display as the Golden Jubilee Motor Boat Show opens. Interest is on a venerable old timer, the “Lillian Russell,” built in 1905, but there are modern lines a plenty in view.

MERCY GOODS TO KOREA:
CALIFORNIA – One million dollars worth of food, clothing and medical supplies are dispatched to Korea under the auspices of the American-Korean foundation.

FISHING FLEET FROZEN OVER:
BOSTON – Trawlers return to below-zero Boston harbor from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. A catch of 450 tons of fish plus tons of ice encrusted on hulls and rigging makes heavy work for crews.

WORLD’S TALLEST BASKETBALL PLAYER:
SEATTLE – A camera close-up of Wade Halbrook of Oregon State, shown in a game against Washington, and off the court – trying to relax under difficulties. At 7’3” he’s the world’s tallest player – and finds that hotel rooms weren’t built to his proportions.

KIDNAPPED REALTOR SAVED AFTER 64 HOURS A CAPTIVE:
SAN FRANCISCO – Unique films of real life drama in the kidnapping of Leonard Moskowitz. In the Hall of Justice, the camera shows Newsreel and press being briefed – shows ransom letters arriving – the finding of the victim’s car – and 64 hours after the case broke, the kidnappers brought into headquarters, and wealthy realtor Leonard Moskowitz reunited with his family.

ATOM SUB LAUNCHED:
CONN. – Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower christens the Nautilus, the world’s first atomic – powered submarine. With unlimited undersea range, the Nautilus promises to revolutionize naval warfare – and offers a forerunner of commercial atomic power.

COIFFURE CONTEST:
PORTUGAL – An international contest in Lisbon has 36 master hairdressers exposing their finest styles in hairdos to the judges. Woman’s crowning glory, glamorized in distinctively different ways.

MUDD FLOOD:
CALIFORNIA – Torrential rains following a forest fire loosen tons of soil on the slopes over Sierra Madre, and brings an avalanche of ooze that buries parts of the town in up to four feet of mud.

MIAMI SALUTES “GLENN MILLER STORY” DEBUT:
MIAMI – Film star Jimmy Stewart arrives for the world premiere of his latest picture, “The Glenn Miller Story,” held simultaneous in three theatres, a top event of the winter season.

EISENHOWER CUP:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower is presented with a handsome crystal glass cup by Vice President Nixon and Cabinet members on his first anniversary in office. It’s a masterpiece of glass-etching, depicting his career from Kansas farm boy to President.

BRITISH EXPLODE NEW A-BOMB:
AUSTRALIA – A sand storm delays Britain’s third Atomic Bomb test. Secrecy governs details of the bomb – but the blinding flash, and ensuing mushroom cloud have a sinister familiarity.

WEST BARS RED CHINA IN BIG 4 PEACE TALK:
BERLIN – Foreign ministers of the western nations – Secretary of State Dulles, Britain’s Eden, France’s Bidault, arrive for talks with Russia’s Molotov on European affairs that may affect history for years to come. In a pre-conference meeting, the western envoys agreed that Red China will be barred from any discussion of European affairs.

ANTI-REDS ARE FREED IN KOREA:
KOREA – 22,000 anti-Red Chinese and North Korean POW’s leave the stockades of the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission, to begin the trek southward. The cheering, singing, flag-waving column gets a triumphal reception passing through Seoul – a hero’s welcome for the thousands who rejected Communism.

SKYRAY INTO SERVICE:
Aboard the carrier “Coral Sea,” the super-sonic “Skyray” jet fighter undergoes its first carrier takeoff and landing tests. It’s the Skyray that recently set a 753 mph record.

INTERNATIONAL PRESS AWARDS:
CALIFORNIA – The Foreign Press Association of Hollywood presents awards to “stars of tomorrow,” and in a turnabout, “Miss International Press” Mamie Van Doren presents an award to the President of the foreign press group.

URGE HEALTH INSURANCE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a hearing of the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Benjamin Lorber, Director of Insurance for Universal Pictures sets forth a comprehensive, far-reaching program of health insurance and medical services for all Americans.

ANOTHER “AMBLING ALP”:
ITALY – Shades of Primo Carnera: Italy unveils a worthy successor to the “ambling Alp,” in the person of Milo Malagoli, 6’8” high, and hitting the scale for a groaning 290 pounds.

AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION AWARD:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – General Carl A. Spaatz, National Director of the Air Force Association presents a citation of honor to Jimmy Stewart, star of the “Glenn Miller Story,” who accepts on behalf of Universal International Pictures.

KITCHEN OF THE FUTURE:
NEW YORK CITY – Push button wizardry makes the “kitchen of the future” a housewive’s dream with all sorts of convenient wonders from refrigerators to cabinets materializing at the wave of a hand or the touch of a fingertip.

MOTOR SPORTS SHOW:
NEW YORK CITY – Tomorrow on wheels is on view at the new Motor Sports Show. Sleek foreign imports and home grown custom models reflecting the continental touch have sports car enthusiasts in high gear.

DULLES REJECTS RED “GREAT POWER” RULE:
BERLIN – At the conference of French, British, Russian, and U.S. Foreign Ministers, deadlock on an agenda continues as the Reds seek to delay German peace talks with a demand for a parley on world issues to include Red China – a bid for “spheres of influence” denounced by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.

DISPUTE IN MOROCCO:
SPANISH MOROCCO – Thousands of Arab tribesmen protest the French appointment of a new Sultan and spiritual leader, and ask the help of Spain in spiritual secession from his leadership. Promised support by Franco is an omen of new troubles in North Africa.

SPORTS STARS OF THE HALF-CENTURY:
PHIADELPHIA – Great names in sports of yesterday and today are honored at the Philadelphia Sports Writers’ Golden Anniversary celebration. Al Rosen, outstanding athlete of 1953, shares the spotlight with George Mikan, Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, and many other greats.

ATOM BATTERY:
NEW YORK – Scientists show the first model of a new “atom battery,” which solves the problem of converting radioactivity to useful electricity. Only enough power is generated to produce a whine in an earphone – but it’s an important first step to a new power source of possible world-shaking importance.

10 OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN NAMED:
SEATTLE – The U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce names its 10 outstanding young men of the year at a gala banquet. Among the 10 chosen are a Governor, a reporter, a Bishop, a Congressman – a cross-section of achievement.

TURKISH PRESIDENT AT WHITE HOUSE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Bayer of Turkey arrives in the nation’s capital. An official greeting by President and Mrs. Eisenhower at the White House is the first stop on a month long tour of the country.

GLENN MILLER MUSIC TO LIBRARY OF CONGRESS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mrs. Helen Miller, widow of the great musician, presents Glenn Miller’s music manuscripts to the Library of Congress, as Jimmy Stewart, star of “The Glenn Miller Story” looks on.

FASHIONS ON A HULA HOLIDAY:
HAWAII – To sunny Honolulu via Northwest Orient Airlines for a happy hula hello by some of the islands prettiest cover girls, modeling travel and resort bags by Josef – all attuned to the colorful holiday atmosphere.

EUROPE LASHED BY WINTER GALES AND SNOWSTORMS:
ENGLAND – Bitter winds sweeping across Europe from the heart of Siberia blanket the British Isles with snow and ice. As far south as Portsmouth, a rare snowfall mantles Nelson’s flagship “Victory.” A bitter winter for Britain.

GIBRALTAR RIOTS:
MADRID – 10,000 students throng the streets, protesting the forthcoming visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Gibraltar, demanding the return of the Mediterranean fortress.

GOLDEN GLOVES:
BROOKLYN – Fistic fireworks as Golden Gloves gladiators in the heavyweight division mix it up. There’s not too much pugilistic polish - but there’s slugging a-plenty.

3 ALARM TIRE FIRE:
TORONTO – Fire guts a rubber factory as 1 million salvaged tires and tubes blaze. Smoke is visible 25 miles off as firemen – delayed by a street level rail crossing, battle to turn back the flames.

SPEED SKATERS:
ST. PAUL – It’s chilly and spilly for the National Outdoor Skating Championships, as tricky turns take their toll of speedsters out for the ice crown.

KOREAN ORPHAN ARRIVES:
SAN FRANCISCO – Five year old Kim Ku Pil arrives in a new land for a new life. He’s greeted at the pier by Airman Bill Pond, veteran of Korea, and Bill’s mother. They’ll adopt the waif of war.

SKI CHAMPIONS VIE:
AUSTRIA – Ski champs from the world over meet to warm up for the coming world championships in Sweden. The downhill course is scenic but speedy – a breath-taking descent.

CHIANG VISITS WASP:
FORMOSA – Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek visits the U.S. aircraft carrier Wasp. The 67-year old chief of Nationalist China observes flight operations as guest of Admiral Pride.

MOVIES HOLD COMMUNION BREAKFAST:
NEW YORK CITY – At the fourth annual Communion Breakfast of the Motion Picture Industry well known stage and screen stars hear the most Rev. James H. Griffiths representing His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman, as principal speaker.

ST. PAUL WINTER CARNIVAL:
ST. PAUL – Walter Dorle is crowned King Boreas as the 18th, and the annual St. Paul Winter Carnival gets under way with the parade more brilliant than ever. 5,000 marchers take part.
