NEW YORK – Penthouse parade of plaids – in pedal-pushers, slacks and skirts. A barbecue atop the city’s skyline is scenic backdrop for a high-style display of fashions for casual summer living.

U.S. STUDENTS AID IN REBUILDING STRICKEN TOWNS:
AUSTRIA – Austrian President Koerner visits one of the towns devastated by last spring’s terrible avalanches, and sees U.S. students along with those of other nations aiding in the task of rebuilding.

EMPIRE GAMES OPEN:
CANADA – Following the opening ceremonies in which athletes of the British Commonwealth take part, presided over by Field Marshal Alexander, the Empire games get under way in earnest, with a thrilling victory in the 100-yard dash by Trinidad’s Mike Agostini.

HOME TOWN HAILS MISS UNIVERSE:
GREENWOOD, S.C. – A gala parade greets the return of Miriam Stephenson, first American girl to war the coveted crown of Miss Universe. The lovely 21-year old college senior reigns over a proud and festive day.

MODEL PLANE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
CHICAGO – Glenview naval Air Station plays host to the National Model Airplane Championships. 2,000 young model-makers present their handiwork in a spectacular series of speed and acrobatic events.

POGO STICK PLANE FLIES:
CALIFORNIA – The first free flight test of the Navy’s “pogo-stick” plane is successful as the delta wing craft takes off vertically, rises 150 feet, and descends to a smooth landing on its tail.

DISASTER AVERTED IN JET CRASH:
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – The heroic sacrifice of a jet pilot averts disaster for the town of Wantagh. Landing his burning Thunderjet at a wide intersection, the pilot – who died in the crash – avoided a nearby residential area, saving countless lives.

LOS ANGELES’ KING AND QUEEN:
LOS ANGELES – Kids on parade, togged out in their cutest finery to vie for the title of King and Queen of Los Angeles. 400 enter – torn between tears and laughter. The winners, a weeping Queen and a perplexed consort.

37 ESCAPE IN TRANSPORT CRASH:
CONNECTICUT – A miraculous escape from death for 37 passengers and crew members of a trans-Atlantic transport that crashed and burned following an unsuccessful landing attempt. All aboard live to tell the tale of their escape from the shattered wreckage.

44TH DIVISION HONORS AUDIE MURPHY:
FT. LEWIS, WASH. – 18,000 men of the 44th Infantry Division stage a mammoth review in honor of the soldier turned actor. The most decorated hero of World War II receives an honor never before accorded a person outside government or military life.

NAZI BLOCKHOUSE BLOWN UP:
HOLLAND – Demolition crews blast a massive blockhouse built during the Nazi occupation. Over a ton of high explosive is required to destroy the ferro-concrete bunker in a titanic blast.

“NEWPORT DREAM” WINS HAMBLETONIAN:
GOSHEN, N.Y. – 21,000 fans on hand for the 29th running of the Hambletonian, the Derby of Trotting, see Newport Dream, an even money favorite in the second heat, win by a neck – a thrilling victory after an injury crippled Spring.

“GIRLS’ NATION” MEMBERS AT WHITE HOUSE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – 98 teenage members of the “Girls’ Nation,” representing all the sates in the union, and the Canal Zone, meet President Eisenhower in the White House Rose Garden.

WESTPORT SALMON DERBY:
WESTPORT, WASH. – Fog doesn’t dampen the ardor of anglers entered in the 5th annual Westport Salmon Derby. 1,000 fishermen are out after the big King Salmon, and the big prizes - $2,500 in all. Eugene Kinsman of Seattle makes the big catch.

QUINTUPLET DIES IN CANADA:
CANADA – Emilie Dionne, one of five famous sisters whose birth 20 years ago astounded the world, and whose life story has been followed by millions, dies of an epileptic attack in a religious rest home near St. Agathe, where she had gone to begin preparations for becoming a nun. Her sisters and other members of the family tender their last respects.

“POGO STICK” PLANE FLIES:
BURBANK, CAL. – Lockheed’s XFV-1 experimental fighter designed to take off straight up is the first craft of its kind to make a free flight. The amazing vertical rising plane can “hang on a cloud,” as its test pilot reports.

GOLD CUP SPEEDBOAT RACE:
SEATTLE, WASH. – Averaging 99-plus MPH in the second heat. Slo-Mo-Shun V wins a torrid race against time and other nautical skip-jacks on Lake Washington. Having won the first heat, Slo-Mo-Shun V takes a long lead toward the speedboat crown it last won in 1951.

INDO REFUGEES FLEE REDS:
INDO CHINA – Pitiful pawns of war, the old, the young and the infirm, leave northern Indo China as the hour approaches for the Vietminh communists to take over. It’s part of a mass evacuation of 700,000 civilians to the south, undertaken with American help.

“SAY HEY” HAS HIS DAY:
NEW YORK – Willie Mays, the “Say Hey Kid” of the pennant contending N.Y. Giants, is honored in pre-game ceremonies at the Polo Grounds. The popular center fielder receives gifts galore, but Willie is sad when the Braves win the game.

KID CIRCUS TRAIN SPECIAL:
WINNEMUCCA, NEVADA – For 1400 youngsters of Northern Nevada countries, big thrill of the year is the Shrine Circus, and the train ride to the big show in cars the kids themselves help paint. It’s a red-letter day from start to finish.

“MILE OF THE CENTURY”:
VANCOUVER, B.C. – The mile race at the Empire Games becomes the “Mile of the Century” – with Dr. John Bannister of England beating Australia’s record holder John Landy with both men coming home in less than four minutes. Bannister passes Landy in last 100 yards in a pulse tingling finish.

HOOVER FETED ON 80TH BIRTHDAY:
WEST BRANCH, IOWA – Former President Herbert Hoover comes back to his boyhood home to celebrate his 80th birthday. The small Iowa town is jammed with out-of-towners here to hail the venerable engineer statesman who is still serving his country.

PIN-PINT PARACHUTING:
FRANCE – Diving head first off a tiny biplane, parachutists from many countries including Russia, compete in a pin-point parachute contest. With themselves as the arrow, they aim at a painted mark on the ground – and some even hit it.

BEAUTY QUEEN SEES STARS:
DUBLIN – Film star Rock Hudson, on location in Ireland for his new picture, “Captain Lightfoot,” presents the first prize to the Irish winner of a beauty contest, and seals the award with a kiss. The winner literally is “seeing stars.”

EJECTION SEAT FOR JET BOMBERS:
GULF OF MEXICO – “Seat to Safety” from speedy jet bomber: Tests of a new downward automatic ejection seat are successfully completed, from a B-47 bomber flying at 10,000 feet above the Gulf. The parachute is opened automatically by explosive and timing devices.

FUR FASHIONS ON PARADE:
BEVERLY HILLS, CAL. – A fur collection featuring fashions for the boulevards of the world, brings an eye filling display of mink and sable to the screen, with lovely models showing the latest in fashion finery to full advantage.

ST. LAWRENCE POWER PROJECT:
MESSENA, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence power project – a $600,000,000 undertaking designed to harness the mighty waterway and turn its energy into abundant cheap electricity for much of New York State and a stretch of Ontario – gets underway at ground breaking ceremonies attended by Gov. Dewey.

PRE-SEASON FOOTBALL THRILLS:
PORTLAND, ORE. – A “big first” for football, and a “big win” for the Los Angeles Rams. In a professional exhibition game, the Rams, sparked by former Oregon grid great, Norm VanBrocklin, trounce the New York Giants by a lopsided score of 30-7.

LAST DAYS OF INDO FIGHTING:
INDO CHINA – Late films from Indo China bring a pictorial record of the last days of the struggle for the rice-rich delta region, where an outpost falls to the Reds on eve of armistice. POW’s are exchanged under terms of Geneva treaty.

PRESIDENT SIGNS TAX BILL:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The new tax bill passed by Congress, with big savings for the American taxpayer, is signed into law by President Eisenhower at the White House ceremony attended by congressional leaders.

SOAP BOX DERBY:
AKRON, OHIO – Colorful doings at the All-American Soap Box Derby, where young Kemp of Los Angeles streaks down the incline at Derby Downs to win the coveted trophy and college scholarship.

AUTOS WHIZ BY AIRPLANE:
TETERBORO, N.J. – The Helio Courier, a new stall-proof plane that can hit a top speed of 157 and land as slow as 30, has its debut. Flying along a highway, the craft is passed by traffic below.

OLD-TIMERS OF BASEBALL:
NEW YORK – Everyone’s favorite ball players are at Yankee Stadium for the Hall of Fame baseball game, diamond immortals demonstrating their talents to the delighted throngs. Eighteen living members of Hall Of Fame are here.

RICHEST GOLF TOURNEY:
CHICAGO – The biggest golf prize in history, worth $100,000, is captured by the smallest Pro in the game. 127-lb. – Bob Toski of New Jersey, Toski holes out before 40,000 thrilled spectators at Tam O’Shanter with a card of 274.

COLLEGE GRID STARS BOW:
CHICAGO – The College All-Stars have a rough and rugged time when they clash with the Detroit Lions at Soldiers Field. The Pro champs roar loud and long, administering a 31-6 defeat to the collegians.

100 YEARS OF TELEGRAPH:
MARSHALL, TEXAS – The 100th anniversary of the first telegraph line into Texas is signal for celebration, with Gov. Shivers on hand for enactment of historical event of 1854.

FREE WORLD MOURNS TWO STATESMEN:
RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil is shocked by the suicide of President Getulio Vargas, following a series of stormy political crises in which he had been deposed by the army. Grief stricken mourners gather at the presidential bier, as the nation is thrown into political chaos by his death.

ITALY – Rome is the scene of deep and solemn mourning for Alcide de Gasperi, long time Prime Minister of Italy, and a staunch proponent of Western unity. Throngs follow the funeral cortege through the streets of the Eternal City to the 73-year old leader’s final resting place in the magnificent Basilica San Lorenzo.

MENDES-FRANCE MEETS CHURCHILL:
ENGLAND – French Premier Mendes-France meets Winston Churchill and Foreign Minister Anthony Eden, following the deadlocked Brussels conference which upset European Army plans and put the Continent at a new turning point in its history.

ORIENTAL TOUCH TO NEW HATS:
NEW YORK – East meets West in fall millinery fashions – an eye appealing array of chapeaux combing Parisian chic with the hues, delicacy and richness of age-old Oriental art – an exotic and exciting fashion innovation.

TEXAN FLIES ATLANTIC:
IRELAND – Texan Tom Danagher lands at Shannon Airport after a daredevil solo flight across the Atlantic in a single-engined light plane. 13? hours from Newfoundland to the Emerald Isle.

NAVY BEGINS FOOTBALL PRACTICE:
ANNAPOLIS – Navy’s gridders take the field to begin fall practice pointing for their opener with William and Mary, and for victory in this year’s Army classic to avenge their ’53 defeat. Coach Eddie Erdelatz has lost most of his linemen – but a powerful backfield has returned.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD “RHINO”:
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Perhaps the first major improvement on the wheel in history is demonstrated. The “Rhino,” is a vehicle rolling on tilted hemispheres that give it amazing maneuverability and traction on any terrain.

INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
GERMANY – European cycle stars in a grueling 144-mile endurance marathon, defying pouring rain to wage a thrilling battle for the International Bicycle Championship. The winner – Louson Bobet of France.

CAVALCADE OF WAVE’S FASHIONS:
SAN FRANCISCO – The Waves celebrates their 12th anniversary with a gear and glamour fashion show – modeling uniforms from World War One and Two as well as the latest in service fashions. On hand to salute the gals, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz.

PRESIDENT URGES ARMY RESERVE BUILDUP TO LEGION:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Legion gathers in Washington for its 36th annual convention, to hear President Eisenhower pledge a continuing fight against subversion, and warn of the urgent need for a strong military reserve – a need we have “failed miserably” to meet.

DISORDERS FOLLOW VARGAS DEATH:
BRAZIL – Street violence racks Brazil following the suicide of President Getulio Vargas. His successor, Joao Café Filho, takes the reins of government, and swift action by troops and police curbs disorders. Guards posted outside the U.S. Embassy and other key points maintain armed vigil against renewed mob outbursts.

PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA SHRINE:
PORTUGAL – Hundreds complete a National Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, patroness of Portugal. Through the long march, the devout pay no heed to physical needs until they reach their goal.

FRENCH LIBERATION ANNIVERSARY:
PARIS – The famed Gardes Republicaines lead the parade celebrating the 10th anniversary of the World War II liberation of Paris, climaxing 3 days of celebrations in which France remembers her deliverance by her allies, even as a new crisis faces the Western nations.

MUD FISHING FREE-FOR-ALL:
FAYETTEVILLE, GA. – All come but it’s not really free. All the fish you can take home from a lake being drained. Only $5 a head – and go into the mud after them. A few bass and plenty of mud cats – what a fish story.

“OPERATION MERCY” AIDS FLOOD AREA:
PAKISTAN – The U.S. Air Force speeds aid to Pakistan from bases on three continents, in the wake of floods that left 15 million homeless, inundating some 60,000 square miles. Food, clothing and medicines to fight threatening epidemics are the cargoes of mercy.

RAMS BEAT BROWNS IN GRID PREVIEW:
LOS ANGELES – 58,000 see the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams clash in a pre-season pro grid preview. Passing ace Otto Graham stars for the Browns – but the power-packed Rams repeat last season’s exhibition upset, 38-10.

HURRICANE RIPS NORTHEAST; 53 DEAD:
Hurricane Carol rips across New York, Long Island, and New England – in her wake a panorama of devastation – thousands homeless, at least 53 dead, and property damage that may reach five hundred million dollars.

ICE BREAKER CONQUERS NORTHWEST PASSAGE:
Above the Arctic Circle, the ice-breaker U.S.S. Burton Island slashes through the frozen McClure Strait to conquer the last link of the long sought Northwest Passage – the direct sea route across the top of the continent.

McCARTHY HEARINGS CONTINUE; PICTURE PRESS BARRED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Watkins Committee hearings on charges made against Senator McCarthy continue. With cameras barred from all hearings, nationwide controversy has been roused.

LOCOMOTIVES FOR KOREA:
LOS ANGELES – 6 locomotives are turned over to Korea by the American Korean Foundation, to help rehabilitate the nation’s ravaged transportation system – a weighty gesture of friendship.

HOT ROD KIDDY CARS:
HOLLAND – Souped-up kiddy cars scoot along the beach at a scorching pace for the grand championship. The daredevil winner gets a silver cup and bashfully accepts a kiss from a young admirer.

75,000 LEGIONNAIRES PARADE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – 75,000 Legionnaires parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, a ten hour spectacle that lasts into the evening. New commander Seaborn Collins of New Mexico takes the cheers of the marchers.

ICE CAPADES PREVIEWED:
ATLANTIC CITY – The Ice Capades 1955 edition glides into the screen, with its inimitable glitter and glamour – lovely ballet, graceful Donna Atwood – and of course the clowns’ hilarious antics – a thrilling preview of a thrilling show.
