SEATTLE – A gala civic reception marks the homecoming of the Pacific Northwest’s own “Indianhead” Division, after 4 years in Korea. The big day is climaxed by a mammoth tickertape parade for the returning G.I.’s.

CAMPAIGN TEMPO INCREASES:
DENVER – Republican party and Congressional leaders meet with President Eisenhower, just before a nation wide address in which he urges the election of a G.O.P. controlled Congress.

LOS ANGELES – Adlai Stevenson addresses a huge Democratic rally at the Hollywood Bowl, attacking the record of the Eisenhower Administration, and denying the need for a Republican Congress.

RECORD RAIN FLOODS CHICAGO:
CHICAGO – A multi-million dollar freak flood inundates Chicago after the heaviest rain in the city’s history. City and suburbs are hard hit as skyscrapers are flooded, many forced from their homes, and traffic and industry disrupted.

STYLE NOTES FROM ITALY:
Italy’s “New Look” in fashions – and a far cry from Dior’s. Refined lines and graceful ornamentation are the keynotes here, while the feminine figure retains its curves in these new modes.

PURDUE 13, DUKE 13:
LAFAYETTE, IND. – Two unbeaten teams clash head on before a crowd of 47,000, and it’s a gridiron stand off. Aldridge of the Duke Blue Devils and the Boilermakers’ Murakowski star in the 13 all thriller.

LOS ANGELES – The grid upset of the week as Texas Christian topples U.S.C. before 52,000, with a combined air and ground attack that ousts the Trojans from the winners’ parade.

CHURCHILL LAUDS U.S.; FRENCH BACK ARMS PACT:
ENGLAND – Prime Minister Winston Churchill addresses the annual Conservative Party Conference, denouncing anti-American feeling, and receives a moving, spontaneous ovation.
PARIS – Premier Mendes-France receives a decisive vote of confidence from the National Assembly on the issue of re-arming Germany, a vote that marks a historic and difficult decision.

FREE CHINA MARKS FOUNDING:
FORMOSA – Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek reviews 8,000 crack troops as the anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Republic is observed, and pledges to free the mainland again.

INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW:
FRANCE – 107 manufacturers from 9 nations present their most glittering showpieces at the 41st International Auto Exhibit, a mouth watering treat for automobile fanciers, featuring sleek sports cars and some radical innovations.

REFUELING AT SEA:
AT SEA – Spectacular scenes of a spectacular performance. U.S. destroyers with the 7th Fleet in the South China Sea are refueled by a floating tanker as deck high waves and rolling seas turn the job into a ticklish and perilous operation.

WORLD WEIGHT-LIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
AUSTRIA – Muscle men from all over the world vie in the World Weight lifting championships. Shemansky of the U.S. wins the heavyweight title with a thrilling “snatch” of 300 pounds, a new record.

U.C.L.A. EDGES WASHINGTON, 21-20:
SEATTLE, WASH. – Underdog Washington comes within one point of a spectacular upset, staging a sensational late game rally against highly touted U.C.L.A., one of the hottest grid performances of the season.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an unusual gesture, President Eisenhower welcomes Secretary of State Dulles at the airport as he returns from the Paris conference which saw agreement on German sovereignty and rearmament finally achieved.

SMOG HITS L.A.:
LOS ANGELES – A fume-laden blanket of smog smothers the city. Citizens suffer and even the statues weep for 2 ? weeks until merciful autumn breezes clear the atmosphere.

QUEEN MOTHER DEPARTS FOR U.S.:
ENGLAND – The Royal Family bids the Queen Mother bon voyage as she entrains to begin her trip to the U.S. Young Prince Charles steals the show with some regal by-play with his sister, Princess Anne.

CORN FOR AUSTRIA:
TRIEST – The first shipment of American corn for Austrian farmers hard hit by recent Danube floods arrives in Trieste. Multi-national ceremonies welcome the good-will cargo.

DIAMOND DAZZLER:
NEW YORK CITY – A new addition to the legendary great gems of history, the 62 caret Winston diamond makes its dazzling debut modeled by screen beauty Merle Oberon.

DACHSHUND ON WHEELS:
SAN JOSE, CAL. – Crippled by a back injury a gallant little dachshund is enabled to walk by an ingenious corset and sling contrivance fitted with wheels by an ingenious yet.

LOS ANGELES – In a game with Rose Bowl implications, U.S.C. edges out California, 29-27.

QUEEN MOTHER BEGINS U.S. VISIT:
NEW YORK – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth arrives aboard her namesake ocean liner to begin a tour of the U.S. and Canada. Following a harbor welcome, she receives members of the diplomatic corps, and next day visits the Canadian Club to unveil a portrait of her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

STRIKERS RIOT AT TOKYO MARKET:
JAPAN – 1,600 Stock Exchange workers demonstrate for 7 hours until a force of 500 policemen breaks up the mob with a club swinging flying wedge.

FASHIONS FROM ITALY:
ITALY – New fashions by Fernandi, who discards the Dior Look to retain the feminine figure’s curves. Chic simplicity and striking ensembles highlight the collection of suits, evening wear, and furs.

WASHTUB PUTS TO SEA:
WASHINGTON – Intrepid Roy Bergo sets off for Alaska, 1,200 miles away, in a sea going washtub he built himself, with a cargo of candy bars and coffee. Engine trouble turns him back, 1,188 miles from his goal.

WRECKING THE RAMBLING WRECKS:
GEORGIA – Homecoming day at Georgia Tech sees a parade of vintage cars and wrecks before the big game with Kentucky. The Wildcats wreck the embryo engineers, 13-6.

GOV. DEWEY OPENS NEW HIGHWAY LINK:
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Governor Dewey opens a new link in the New York State Thruway, extending the superhighway’s total mileage to 366 miles, from Buffalo to Newburgh.

NEW YORK CITY – Britain’s Queen Mother Elizabeth steals the spotlight from international notables at observances of Columbia University’s 200th anniversary. In ceremonies at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, honorary degrees are presented to her, Chief Justice Warren Adlai Stevenson, and German Chancellor Adenauer.

FLOODS RAVAGE ITALY:
ITALY – Devastated towns and shocked survivors in the wake of Italy’s most catastrophic floods. Cloudbursts sent torrents raging into coastal towns. The grim toll – over 20,000 homeless and at least 400 known dead.

TURBO-PROP TRANSPORT:
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – An impressive demonstration of America’s first commercially built turbo-prop transport plane. Powered with the efficient new engines, the standard type transport displays fighter plane rate of climb!

LOCUSTS PLAGUE CANARY ISLANDS:
CANARY ISLANDS – The worst insect plague of recent years hits the Canary Islands’ fertile fields. Aided by crop dusting planes, farmers battle to save at least part of their crops from the locust hordes.

NOTRE DAME vs NAVY:
BALTIMORE – A rain soaked gridiron and determined opposition makes it a thriller right down to the closing minutes, as a fumble on the one yard line ends Navy’s drive to score and tie. The Irish win, 6-0.

INTERNATIONAL BEAUTIES ARRIVE:
UNIVERSAL CITY, CAL. – Continental beauties selected after many months of search arrive to be screen tested in the role of Mary Magdalene in U-I’s forthcoming production, “the Galileans.”

OHIO STATE vs NORTHWESTERN:
EVANSTON – Homecoming day for Northwestern – pitted against favored Ohio State. It looks like an upset in store, at first but Buckeye power blasts the Wioldcats’ hopes, with a 14-7 final score for Ohio.

ELECTION RESULTS:
Nationwide round-up of results in key Gubernatorial and mid-term Congressional contests. Despite bad weather, a record number of voters went to the polls, in what emerged as one of the closest elections in recent years, with recounts ordered in several states.

LINGERING LOOK AT LINGERIE:
ENGLAND – Synthetic fabrics star in new nightgowns and negligees shown in Picadilly. The latest in lingerie styles, featuring the fashionable new H-look.

GRUNT AND GROAN GRIDDERS:
SEATTLE – Pro wrestlers from the Northwest don football togs to tackle the Seattle Ramblers in the annual “Muscle Bowl” charity match. Despite arm-locks and flying mares, the gridders put the grunt and groaners down for the count.

LIONS CLAW RAMS, 27-24:
LOS ANGELES – A thriller right down to the closing minutes as the Detroit Lions, pro grid champs, overcome an early lead by the Los Angeles Rams to take an important game by a narrow 27-24 margin.

SEA DART CRASHES IN TEST FLIGHT:
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – The mid-air explosion of the Navy’s radical Sea Dart jet fighter. The unexplained blast comes when the plane is only 300 feet above the water. Test pilot Charles Richburgh dies within minutes after rescuers reach him.

POGO PLANE MAKES FIRST LEVEL FLIGHT:
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Another unorthodox Navy fighter, the vertically rising “pogo plane” makes its first horizontal flight, displaying perfect control in its unique vertical take-off and landings as well.

IOWA vs PURDUE:
IOWA CITY – Homecoming Day for the Hawkeyes, who delight the fans by blasting out a 25-0 lead over Purdue by the half, and staving off the Boilermakers’ desperate drive, to win 25-14.

STASSEN AND FRANCO MEET:
SPAIN – Foreign Operations Administrator Harold Stassen visits Generalissimo Franco to discuss the mutual aid treaty between Spain and the U.S.A.

U.C.L.A. vs OREGON:
LOS ANGELES – Grid thrills in the Coast Conference, Powerful U.C.L.A. gets off to an early lead and rolls over Oregon for a crushing 41-0 victory margin.

MAMMOTH TRIESTE RALLY:
TRIESTE – Italy’s President Einaudi reviews crack troops, as Italy formally takes control of the city’s Zone A. An enormous crowd jams the streets to cheer the occasion.

“HIGH AND DRY” PREMIERE:
SAN FRANCISCO – The skirl of bagpipes and a wee bit of a highland fling mark the premiere of “High and Dry.” J. Arthur Rank’s delightful new film comedy.

BOSTON – Addressing the National Council of Catholic Women, President Eisenhower strikes a hopeful note on the prospects of world peace, stressing the role of mothers and the home in achieving international harmony.

PRESIDENT GREETS NEW CITIZENS, JAPANESE PREMIER:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – 20 prospective citizens are welcomed at the White House by President Eisenhower, as a prelude to later mass naturalization of 50,000 throughout the country. Later, the President greets Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshida, who arrives to confer on his country’s economic problems.

IWO JIMA MEMORIAL DEDICATED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Solemn ceremonies dedicate the Marine Corps War Memorial – a massive replica of the historic scene of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima. President
Eisenhower and 3 survivors of the original group are among the many honored guests present.

DAZZLIGN DALI JEWELRY:
SPAIN – Surrealist jewelry by Salvador Dali ranges from his artistic trade mark – a limp watch – to beating heart or rubies. A modern master extends his unique fantasy into gems and precious metals.

MOVIES HONORED FOR BOND SALES AID:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Screen star Judy Holliday receives the Minute Man award in recognition of the motion picture’s generous efforts in furthering government bond sales drives.

PARIS DOG SHOW:

MIAMI-AUBURN GRID BATTLE:
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – A spectacular grid clash. Trailing 13-0 in the fourth quarter, Auburn catches fire and scores two touchdowns, plus both conversions – the last in a hairbreadth play – to outpoint previously unbeaten Miami, 14-13.

WACO, TEXAS – At Baylor U.’s Second Annual Conference on American Ideals, evangelist Billy Graham and Governor F.G. Clement receive honorary degrees.
