FRENCH REINFORCED AS INDO-CHINA CRISIS MOUNTS:
INDO-CHINA – French Union para-troops attack the outer ring of Communists besieging Dien Bien Phu in a new measure to relieve pressure on the isolated garrison, as both sides fight to the last ditch for mastery of the fortress before the Geneva conference convenes.

THE CASE OF THE POCK-MARKED WINDSHIELDS:
SEATTLE – The case of the pock-marked windshields, currently plaguing motorists throughout the Northwest, is no nearer solution as scientists study the mysterious pits that have been appearing in the glass of thousands of cars. It’s the nation’s most baffling mystery since the flying saucers.

ROYAL YOUNGSTERS SAIL:
ENGLAND – Prince Charles and Princes Anne begin their own exciting Odyssey as they embark on the Royal yacht Britannia for North Africa where they’ll meet the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, homeward bound from their Commonwealth Tour.

LILLIPUT VILLAGE:
HOLLAND – The lowlands’ own lilliput village is opened with the coming of spring. Leading the guided tour for happy young visitors is none other than Gulliver, perfectly at home amid the small-scale surroundings.

TULIP TIME STYLES FOR DUTCH MAIDS:
HOLLAND – No wooden shoes here. Lissome Dutch maids model Jacques Fath’s latest creations, and their color and grace is a treat to the eye. They steal the show from the tulips.

45TH DIVISION COMES HOME:
NEW YORK – Joyful tears of thousands of relatives and loved ones greets the 45th “Thunderbird” Division at the docks. The first division to return from Korea en masse, they’re reunited with loved ones after 21 months overseas.

SPRING TONIC AT THE ZOO:
ENGLAND – Even animals get spring fever, and all hands are in line for a dose of spring tonic – halibut oil. The seals flip with glee, penguins give it the cold shoulder – and the chimps turn the tables on their keeper, giving him a taste of his own medicine.

ANTI-RED RIOTS:
FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Hundreds of shouting, demonstrating anti-communists tax police as they protest the Red kidnapping of their leader, Dr. Alexander Trushnovitsch, in Berlin. A militant anti-communist, he was abducted and returned to East Germany and almost certain death.

HERO DECORATED:
KOREA – Sergeant Ola L. Mize is honored by his regiment and General Canham as he receives the Congressional medal of honor for killing 65 Chinese Reds during one of the last major engagements of the war.

MIDGET GYRO GLIDER:
RALEIGH, N.C. – Igor Bensen takes the wraps off his tiny gyro glider which has less than one hundred dollars worth of parts and soars beautifully on its test.

FREEDOM TRAINS:
NEW YORK – The first of three trains bearing supplies to war-ravaged Korea, leaves for its cross country trip after ceremonies at its departure point. It is hoped that 600 cars will be eventually filled.

WORKMAN’S FASHIONS:
PHILADELPHIA – Fashions come to the mere males during lunch hour at the factory. Male models show the latest in men’s attire to the cheers of the ladies.

CITY CHEERS 45TH DIVISION:
NEW YORK – Hundreds of thousands cheer the “Thunderbird” division as it marches to City Hall to receive the city’s honors from Mayor Wagner and other dignitaries.

DEAF MUTES ‘SING’ HYMNS:
TORONTO – In a moving demonstration of religious faith, deaf mutes follow in gestures and cadence the singing of one of the great hymns, “The Old Rugged Cross.”

CANCER TRAILER:
Audrey Hepburn and her co-star Mel Ferrer make an eloquent appeal on behalf of the American Cancer Society during its annual drive for funds.

WORLD PEACE HOPES CENTER ON GENEVA:
Ministers of the 5 ranking powers arrive in the Swiss City for parleys on peace and Southeast Asian tensions to be held at the former League of Nations Palace. For the first time, Western leaders come face to face with Chon En Lai, one of the Red masters of China.

RED ASSASSIN REVEALS PLOT:
GERMANY – Intended victim and killer meet as Nicolai Khoklov, sent into West Germany to assassinate refugee leader Georgi Okolovich, tells why he bolted his Red Secret Police assignment to seek political asylum in the free world.

CLOWNS CHEER MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY CHILDREN:
NEW YORK – Circus clowns bring a comic carnival to cheer young sufferers who are guests at the birthday party of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which combats the dread, little known disease.

SOLAR BATTERY:
NEW JERSEY – Scientists show the newly developed solar battery, which draws sufficient power from the sun’s rays to power a toy ferris wheel today – and points the way to fuelless power for the world of tomorrow.

MRS. AMERICA CHOSEN:
FLORIDA – Fifty lovely young wives vie for the title of Mrs. America. Chosen from six finalists is pretty Mrs. Wanda Jennings of St. Louis, who can hardly believe the good news.

FIRE WHEEL:
GERMANY – A millennia –old rite of spring is revived as farmers launch the spectacular fire wheel – a six foot disc that blazes across pastures and farmland – according to legend bringing good fortune to the ground it sears.

CORRELATIONS WINS WOOD MEMORIAL:
NEW YORK – “Correlation” romps home by three length for victory in the Wood Memorial and a $120,000 purse. The victory over a field of Derby entrants establishes Correlation as a strong favorite for the coming turf classic.

AVALANCHE KILLS 9 IN ALPINE TRAGEDY:
AUSTRIA – Rescuers end 9 days of exhausting search and waning hopes with the discovery of the frozen bodies of a party of students and teachers trapped by avalanches. A photograph taken by one of the party shows the group just hours before death, huddled in prayer.

REDS BLOCK EARLY GENEVA PEACE HOPES:
GENEVA – The first sessions dealing with Korean and Indo-Chinese problems get under way. Red China’s Chou En Lai demands equality at the conference table, and warns America to stay out of Asia, as France seeks a cease fire for the evacuation of Dien Bien Phu’s wounded.

PLANES FOR INDO CHINA:
ALAMEDA, CALIF. – The carrier Windham Bay loads a vital cargo for Indo China – Grumman Bearcat fighters destined for French forces in Indo China, urgently requested in the face of the Red surge.

NEW STRENGTH FOR ROK ARMY:
KOREA – Three new Army Corps are turned over to the Republic of Korea. In an address of congratulation, U.S. General Maxwell Taylor speaks of Korean – and a surprised President Rhee turns to English in reply.

LARGEST ARMY AUCTION:
CALIFORNIA – Twelve million dollars worth of Army surplus goods goes on the block at Sharpe General Depot in the first Army surplus sale conducted by public auctioneers on a public bidding basis.

NEW MOROTCYCLE SPEED MARK:
GERMANY – Racing driver G.A. Baum sets a new record for the small 100 cc class, piloting a super-streamlined torpedo shell that leaves his feet dangling, but whips over a mile course at 110 mph.

OPERATION “WALKOUT”:
SPOKANE, WASH. – Spokane becomes the first city to carry out a civil defense exercise to meet the threat of H-bomb attack – mass evacuation by all citizens – a grim foretaste of a future America seeks to avert.

MOTORCYCLE MUD RACE:
SEATTLE, WASH. – The Seattle Cycle Club celebrates the coming of spring with a splash – of mud, whipping 15 laps through a mired course that leaves all concerned oozing a thick coat of goo.

“DETERMINE” WINS RICHEST DERBY PURSE:
Turf history is made at Churchill Downs as “Determine” wins the richest Kentucky Derby in history. He’s the smallest horse ever to win- and the only grey – but Determine runs a great race overtaking “Hasty Road” in the stretch for a thrilling finish.

ARGENTINE ELECTIONS:
BUENOS AIRES – Peronista candidate for Vice-President Alberto Teisare wins by a wide margin in nation wide elections – a victory taken as a personal triumph by President Peron, who campaigned actively for Teisare.

SCHOOL FOR HAT:
CHICAGO – The “do-it-yourself” craze extends to hats. Hundreds wearing their own creations compete in the Park Department’s hat parade. It’s graduation day for student milliners – and they pass with flying colors.

MOTHER OF YEAR:
COLUMBUS, GA. – Named 1954’s Mother of the Year is 65-year old Mrs. Love Wheeler Tolbert, with five grown sons all successful in business and the professions. She now devotes her time to the county school library and to her flower garden.

YOUNG MEN ON FLYING TRAPEZES:
WEST BERLIN – Three talented young trapeze artists, aged 8, 9, and 11, learn the aerialists art in the living room of their West Berlin apartment. Crowded surroundings don’t bother them a bit as they go through paces under the tutelage of one-time circus great Cimarro – a refugee from the Soviet zone.

FLYING YANKEES:
CONN. – Governor John C. Lodge joins the flying Minute Men of the Air National Guard in defense maneuvers over the New England coast. Thunderjet fighters streak aloft in an impressive display of the “weekend warriors” prowess.

CENTRE AS DENVER SHOWPLACE:
DENVER – A star-studded opening night for the Centre Theatre, Denver’s newest showplace. Among the many figures on hand for the opening of the imposing new theatre are Mary Pickford, Buddy Rogers and Charles Coburn.

ATOM VAULT:
AZYANTE, CAL. – A former railroad tunnel becomes a storage vault for precious property and records – the mountain above offering protection against even an atomic blast.

APPLE QUEEN CROWNED:
VIRGINIA – Patricia Priest, daughter of U.S. Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest is crowned Queen Shenandoah XXVII, reigning over the picturesque Apple Blossom Festival and heading the beautiful procession that culminates the seasonal celebration.

DULLES TELLS PRESIDENT OF GENEVA IMPASSE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of State Dulles reports to President Eisenhower on developments at the Geneva Conference, where Red obstructionism prevented any agreement on Korea, and where the Indo-China crisis has assumed even direr proportions.

CANADA’S GOVERNOR GENERAL ADDRESSES CONGRESS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Canada’s Governor General Vincent Massey, in the Capital to return President Eisenhower’s 1953 state visit, addresses a joint session of the Congress on the importance today of the two nation’s long standing mutual friendship.

MISS BERLIN CHOSEN:
WEST BERLIN – 25 of Berlin’s loveliest Madchens vie for the title of Miss Berlin. Fairest of the fair is 19-year old Kaethe Holz Wunderschon.

TIMBER TOPPER TOGGERY:
NEW YORK CITY – A special showing of fashions for timber-topping gals who stand over 5ft. 7in. tall. A group of giraffes lend atmosphere as the new fashions – which solve a style problem for long-legged lovelies – are paraded.

FREEDOM BALLOONS OVER IRON CURTAIN:
GERMANY – Films from a secret balloon launching site in free Germany, where volunteer prepare millions of leaflets for Czechoslovakians opposing their Red overloads – a message of hope from out of the blue.

MOTOCYCLE HILL CLIMB:
SEATTLE, WASH. – The Jolly Rogers, the Northwest’s famed motorcycle club, get the season under way with an assault on Jolly Roger Hill, a 65 degree grade that has the handlebar jockeys gasping, and clutching dust.

MOROCCO UPRISING QUELLED:
MOROCCO – Swift action by French police nips a Nationalist uprising in the bud as police round up some 300 suspected terrorists – latest skirmish in the terrorist campaign against the French sponsored Sultan.

KOREAN PILOT ARRIVES:
SAN FRANCISCO – North Korean pilot Noh Kum Sok arrives in the U.S. where he’ll spend a year studying. Last year he received a $100,000 reward for piloting a Russian built MIG to a U.S. airfield.

YACHTING SEASON OPENS:
SEATTLE – The city’s giant fleet of small craft opens the yachting season with a colorful regatta on Lake Washington – a day marred by a minor collision which sends two deckhands overboard but does no other damage as the season gets off to a brisk start.

TRUMAN MARKS BIRTHDAY, WARNS PRESIDENT MUST GUARD POWERS:
NEW YORK CITY – Celebrating his 70th birthday, at a party attended by top Democratic leaders, former President Harry S. Truman speaks on the importance of the Constitutional separation of Presidential and Congressional powers, and warns that the President must be master in his own house.

TEMPLE BELL RETURNED:
JAPAN – After a 10 year Odyssey, the 262-year old temple bell of the village of Chara is returned to its traditional home by the U.S. Navy. Taken by the Japanese military during the war, the bell became a prize of war until its importance to the devout village was learned.

NAPOLEONIC ACCENT ON N.Y. STYLES:
NEW YORK CITY – Napoleon and his Empress Marie Louise are central characters in a fashion presentation entitled Paris in New York – regal gowns, stately beauties, and truly imperial gems in ensembles fit for an emperor.

VARIETY CLUBS HONOR LEADER:
NEW YORK CITY – 900 of the motion picture industry’s leading figures gather to honor Bill German for his work as President of the Variety Club Foundation to combat epilepsy.

DOG RAISES TIGER CUBS:
HOLLAND – An unusual ménage – an Alasatian wolf-dog, her pup, and a little tiger cub neglected by its mother. Mother-love overcomes instinctive enmity to bring about a rare family scene.

FOREIGN LEGIONNAIRES’ HOME:
FRANCE – A moving visit to the first home for crippled veterans of the Foreign Legion – hard-bitten fighting men who have served France in every corner of the globe find peace and rest on this 200 acre farm.

ELEPHANT ANTICS:
LA HABRA, CAL. – Animal show performer Wally Ross gets together with his elephant friend Big Bab and things happen! Wally’s the only man who’ll put his head in an elephant’s mouth and hang by the neck – a truly hair-raising performance.

AMATEURS STAGE THRILLING RODEO:
OROVILLE, CAL. – The 6th annual Oroville amateur rodeo officially opens the state rodeo season. The riders may be amateurs – but their steeds are as ornery as any, and the show is filled with thrills and spills – a spectacular curtain-raiser for the rodeo season.

LONDON – Pageantry recalling the splendor of the Coronation marks the return of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh from their 6-month world tour. A spectacular parade through crowd lined streets to Buckingham Palace, where a massed ovation from the enormous throng greets the popular monarch.

BRITAIN SHOWS NEW TANKS:
ENGLAND – The Royal Armored Corps shows its newest, mightiest armored vehicles, including the mammoth 60 ton Caernavon, in an awesome action display for high military officials.

HELLDORADO KIDS’ PARADE:
LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Helldorado Week in the Silver State gets under way with a festive parade of kids in old-time garb. The youngsters kick up their heels as Nevada pays homage to the good old days.

GEN. DEAN GREETS G-I’S:
SEATTLE, WASH. – Gen. William F. Dean, hero of Korean combat and captivity is at the dockside as 3200 veterans return from overseas. A gala civic reception, including can-can girls, completes the ceremonies, part of nation-wide observances of Armed Forces Day.

PLANES & AIRMEN OF TOMORROW:
NEW YORK – 1000 model plane enthusiasts gather at the annual flying fair held at Floyd Bennett Field. Airmen of tomorrow display their handiwork, ranging from an ingenious “flying saucer” to radio-controlled models that can do everything a full-sized plane can.

FIRST JET TRANSPORT:
RENTON, WASH. America’s first jet transport plane rolls out of the factory two months ahead of schedule. The 95 ton Jet Stratoliner is planned to carry up to 150 passengers across the Atlantic in less than 8 hours – or serve as a military aerial tanker.

KING COTTON IS MONARCH FOR A DAY:
MEMPHIS, TENN. – The annual Cotton Carnival is bigger and better than ever. After the crowning of King and Queen Cotton, a gala parade brings back the good old days with a series of breath-takingly beautiful, nostalgic scenes of the Old South.

WOUNDED EVACUATED FROM DIEN BIEN PHU:
INDO-CHINA – Helicopters evacuate the most critically wounded of the gallant fighting men captured by the Reds at Dien Bien Phu, under a shaky agreement with Communist leaders. But when Red forces use the evacuation routes to steal a march, the wounded still remaining must suffer – pawns in their ruthless diplomacy – as French bombers blast the insurgent force.

PRESIDENT AT “FREEDOM DAY” OBSERVANCE:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – President Eisenhower takes part in state wide observances of “Freedom Day,” commemorating the signing of Mecklenburg County’s Declaration of Independence in 1775 – over a year before the national Declaration of Independence.

MRS. EISENHOWER GETS FLORAL DEFENSE BOND:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mrs. Eisenhower is presented with a huge floral replica of the Government Series E Saving Bond, by Mrs. George Humphrey, wife of the Secretary of the Treasury, a floral reminder to invest in the future of America.

DEFENSE SECRETARY IN KOREA:
KOREA – Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson arrives in Seoul, first stop on a three week tour of the trouble spots in Asia were the worst foreign policy crisis since World War II has arisen for the U.S.

6 YEAR OLD MOTORCYCLE ACE:
FRANCE – Daniel Lescovac whizzes across a rugged cross-country course on his midget motorcycle to startle spectators and in a kiss from his little girl friend – a dare devil at the age of 6.

MOTION PICTURE ANNIVERSARY:
FORT LEE, N.J. – Fort Lee stages a double anniversary celebration – marking the 50th year of the New Jersey borough, and commemorating the country’s first permanent motion picture studio. On hand, a hand-cranked camera and a bevy of turn of the century bathing beauties to recall the movies’ earliest days.

KID RODEO:
JOHN DAY, ORE. – Thrills and spills for boys and girls from 9 to 19 in the annual Junior rodeo. Man sized steers and broncos, though for a show ever bit as good as the grown-ups can do.

CRASH WAGONS MEET HIGHWAY EMERGENCY:
CALIF. – San Mateo sets the pace in dealing with highway emergencies with a new fleet of crash wagons, equipped to speed to the scene of accident or disaster carrying rescue and first aid gear including boats and pulmotors – the last word in high speed mission of mercy.
