MASS NATURALIZATION FOR ALIEN G.I.’S:
GERMANY 104 soldiers in the U.s. forces, most of whom fled from Red-dominated countries following World War II, take the oath of loyalty to the United States.
U.S. STARS AT RIO CARNIVAL:
BRAZIL Thousands throng the streets of Rio in madcap Carnival merry-making. U.s. screen stars on hand for the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival join the fun at a gala dance.
OPERATION PHILIPPINES:
SAN FRANCISCO One million dollars worth of farm equipment collected in California and Nevada is loaded for shipment to the Philippines to bolster the island’s farm program.
RECORD HERRING CATCH:
CANADA Whales aid the British Columbia herring fleet to the biggest catch in years. Herring by the million are netted after the big fish show the fishers where they schools are funning.
ISOLATED ISLAND:
HOLLAND a one plane air lift supplies the keeper of isolated Rottum Island, Heer Toxopeus stationed on the barren speck in the North Sea for 19 years.

AUSTRALIA In Melbourne’s huge Cricket Ground, 17,000 Australian school children stage a remarkable display of precision marching, wheeling and counter marching in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit.

REDS, FRENCH LOCKED IN CRUCIAL BATTLE:
INDO-CHINA Forty thousand Reds lay siege to the isolated stronghold of Dien Bien Phu. Outnumbered 4 to 1, the French Union garrison kills or wounds 10,000 in the fiercest single battle of the war, a battle that may prove the turning point of the bitter conflict.
FIGHTER TAKES OFF VERTICALLY:
CALIFORNIA Just released films show two radical new fighter planes. Powered by turbo-prop engines, they take off and land vertically dispensing with the need for runways.
QUEEN SEES KOALAS:
AUSTRALIA One of the quietest points on Queen Elizabeth’s Australian itinerary is a visit to a state sanctuary for Koala Bears real-life prototypes of the Teddy Bear, found only in Australia.
NEWEST ATOM SMASHER:
CALIFORNIA At the University of California, the “Bevatron,” newest and mightiest atom smasher, aids scientists probing the fundamental mysteries of the universe.
SAINT PATRICK’S DAY PARADE:
NEW YORK 120,000 paraders march up famous Fifth Avenue to the skirl of the pipes. Dublin’s Lord Mayor Butler is on the reviewing stand, and the skies are smiling on the day of days for the Irish.
45th DIVISION LEAVES KOREA:
KOREA The 45th “Thunderbird” Division leaves Korea, embarking for the United States the first to come home since fighting began. Polish representatives view the embarkation.
BRITISH FUR FASHIONS:
CANADA Sending furs to Canada is like sending coals to New castle, but British styles appeal. It’s a complete collection of fur fashion, including fur earrings, hats and handbags.
KIDS CUT CAPERS ON SKATES:
CHICAGO Figure skater Mike Kirby, now the mentor of a surburban skating school, trains ‘em young, starting the tots on skates at the age of six. The kids fall all over themselves in their eagerness to learn.

GLOBAL JET BOMBER GOES INTO SERVICE:
SEATTLE The first B-52 Stratofortress comes off the production line as thousands of the workers who helped build the giant craft look on. It’s destined to become the Air Force’s first line atom bomb carrier, with its rumored jet plane speed and enormous range.
FRENCH GENERAL MEETS PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. President Eisenhower and Admiral Radford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confer with French General Paul Ely to review the serious situation in Indo-China.
18 DIE IN AIR EXPLOSION:
MARYLAND Scattered debris is mute testimony to the mid-air explosion of a Flying Boxcar in which all aboard 18 crewmen and passengers died as the plane crashed before they could parachute to safety.
FRENCH BATHING SUITS:
PARIS That oo-la-la look is given to milady’s bathing suits for the coming season. You see just how they are draped by the designers. Oo-la-la.
MARINE RAILWAY:
SEATTLE The Army goes amphibious again with a new portable Marine Railway. Riding on 9 ? foot tires, it’s designed to beach any craft up to seventy-five tons in weight, operating on any type of bottom.
BOWLING CONGRESS OPENS:
SEATTLE 45 days of bowling get under way. It’s the 51st American Bowling Congress Tournament, with nearly sixteen thousand keglers competing for fame and glory in the biggest event of the world’s most popular sport.
WEDDING ON SKIS:
CALIFORNIA Nuptial novelty in the High Sierras. A wedding on skis a mile and a half above sea level. Minister and happy couple defy freezing winds to tie the marital knot, but when the ceremony ends, its “schuss” down the mountainside, honeymoon bound.
STOCK CAR RACES:
ATLANTA Stock cars tear round a hundred mile course and they scorch the dirt track at a near suicidal pace. No fatalities, but there’s one serious injury and two others walk away from crashes that might have been fatal. Motor mayhem and stock car thrills.
LA SALLE TAKES BASKETBALL CROWN:
KANSAS CITY, MO. Bradley clashes with La Salle for the NCAA Basketball crown. All American Tom Gola sparks LaSalle to their first NCAA championship in a court thriller.
TEENAGE TRAFFIC TOURNEY:
CALIFORNIA The country’s first Safety-Economy Driving Competition sees 250 teenagers competing over a supervised course. Fuel economy and close observance of traffic rules, not speed, determine the winner.

U.S. STEPS UP AID AS INDO-CHINA CRISIS NEARS:
INDO-CHINA With new American equipment, French Union forces launch an amphibious assault on the northern coast, the most bitterly contested theatre. Sappers brave destruction to clear mined jungle trails and one is severely wounded when his luck turns.
IN THE AGE OF THE ATOM:
JAPAN Fishermen suffering from serious radio-activity burns as a result of a “hot” ash-fall 300 miles from the Eniwetok hydrogen bomb tests, are examined by U.S. and Japanese doctors.
SAN FRANCISCO Another by-product of the stupendous mid-Pacific blast, the arrival of tuna fish possibly made radio-active during the tests, scrutinized by Federal agents armed with Geiger counters for contamination.
MASSACHUSETTS Personnel of the First Army Chemical Defense School are confronted with simulated atom bomb explosions frighteningly realistic, but non-lethal, developed for troop training.
WHITE HOUSE PRESENTATIONS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. President Eisenhower is presented with the Grand Order of the Cross of the Holy Sepulchre by Archbishop Michael of the Greek Orthodox Church, in recognition of his efforts for world freedom and peace. Later, California’s Senator Kuchel and Congressman Moss present a western-style sombrero.
REFUGEE FLOW CONTINUES:
BERLIN A new refugee registration center opens with U.S. aid, to help meet the continued influx of refugees from Red tyranny. As many as a thousand a day slip across the frontier for a chance for a new life.
IWO JIMA RE-LIVED:
IWO JIMA The Marines re-live one of their greatest hours, one of their bloodiest battles, with a spectacular re-enactment of the battle that ten years ago culminated with the planting of Old Glory on Mt. Suribachi.
INTER-CITY GOLDEN GLOVES:
NEW YORK Fistic fireworks fill the air as the Golden Gloves’ inter-city championships pit Chicago against New York for the most exciting boxing shown in this year’s tourneys.
AUTOMATIC SEAT EJECTOR TESTED:
NEW JERSEY The first fully automatic ejector seat is tested, a vital safety device to jet pilots in the supersonic air age. At 500 mph, seat and test dummy are ejected, the “pilot” automatically freed, and his chute automatically opened at pre-set altitude.

INCA BABY PRESERVED 500 YEARS IN ANDES:
CHILE The body of a young child perfectly preserved for 500 years under the snows of the Andes is discovered by a muleteer. Found with all the rich ceremonial trappings of Inca burial, it’s a historical find of interest and importance.
TURKISH PRESIDENT HAILED:
TURKEY Thousands stream through the streets to welcome Turkey’s President Celal Bayar, arriving in Istanbul after a highly successful good-will visit to the U.S.
CANOE SLALOM:
NEW HAMPSHIRE Something new in winter sports whizzing down the snowy slopes in Canoes. Nary a spill but plenty of thrills as they steal the toboggan’s stuff.
ABORIGINES DANCE FOR QUEEN:
AUSTRALIA Aborigines perform tribal dances never before seen by any woman in tribute to the visit of Queen Elizabeth, an exotic highlight of the Royal Tour.
ANIMAL STARS GET AWARDS:
CALIFORNIA Top animal stars of motion pictures, including Francis the talking mule, receive their “Patsy” awards, with Ruth Hampton and other stars on hand to give the four-footed troupers a big send-off.
HUMANITARIAN AWARDS:
TEXAS The Variety Clubs International present their annual Humanitarian Award, to Dr. Karl Friedrich Mayer. Barbara Stanwyck presents the annual Heart Citation to Grand Rapids Tent 17.
PARIS SHOWS SPRING HATS:
FRANCE A sign of spring from Paris chapeaux for the ladies. Mostly in straw, from wide-brimmed evening models to chic little pill-box styles, colorfully adorned with spring flowers to suit the season.
AMERICA’S OLDEST TRIPLETS:
MASSACHUSETTS America’s oldest triplets, Faith. Hope, and Charity all windows celebrate their 86th birthdays. One of the big events of this year’s celebration greetings from President Eisenhower.
CIRCUS COMES TO BIG TOWN:
NEW YORK The animals debark in the freight yards as thrilled kids look on Mlle. Toto the baby gorilla rides in an ambulance, but the elephants walk, leading the procession for six miles. The Circus is in town.

FIRST FILMS… H-BOMB BLAST:
The awful destructive power of the H-bomb is shockingly demonstrated in just released films of last year’s test the detonation of the first “baby” fusion bomb sinks the island it’s fired on. The sinister mushroom cloud rises 25 miles, spreads over 100 miles wide a sinister portent of a new era in the atomic age.
HOLLYWOOD FASHION HOLIDAY:
CALIFORNIA Starlets Mamie VanDoren, Ruth Hampton, Myrna Hansen and other lovelies model an eye-appealing array of summer styles, ranging from travel suits to swim wear, lovely picture.

INDO-CHINA AIR STRIKES AID BELEAGUERED FRENCH:
INDO-CHINA As the tempo of combat mounts at the besieged fortress of Dien Bien Phu, Flying Boxcars turn bomber in an all-out air effort to relieve the pressure of the Red assault. One of the great defensive actions of military continues.
BEIRUT STUDENTS RIOT:
LEBANON A Red-inspired student mob riots outside the American University to protest the Turkey-Pakistan defense pact. One is killed, 29 injured when clubs and fire hoses fail to halt the mob, and police are forced to open fire.
INTERNATIONAL DOG SHOW:
GERMANY An international pooch parade with a Fancy Dan Boxer kibitzing the other entrants from vest-pocket Chinabua to the big St. Bernard.
ROYAL TAN WINS GRAND NATIONAL AS STEEPLECHASE KILLS 4 HORSES:
ENGLAND The 108th running of the Grand National Steeplechase, one of the world’s most grueling turf classics. 29 entries get away but the pitfalls of the rugged course prove the doom of 4, and take out 15 more as Royal Tan wins by a neck in a thrilling finish.
JAPAN PRESENTS TEMPLE LANTERN:
WASHINGTON, D.C. As the annual Cherry Blossom Festival begins, Japanese Ambassador Sadao Iguchi presents a 300-year old temple lantern, in commemoration of the first Japanese-American treaty.
“IRISH” START SPRING TRAINING:
SOUTH BEND, IND. Notre Dame gridders turn out for spring training under the eye of their new coach, Terry Brennan six years ago a star in Frank Leahy’s backfield today his successor.
SAFETY BELTS TO CUT CAR INJURIES:
CALIFORNIA Newest safety measure adopted by the Highway Patrol are safety belts for all cars to end the hidden menace of the “suicide seat” next to the driver, till now a perilous place in the event of any sudden stop.
VICE-PRESIDENT SEES H-BOMB AS WEAPON FOR PEACE:
DETROIT Vice-President Richard Nixon addresses the Republican dinner and points out possibilities of the effective utilization of the H-bomb’s enormous potentialities in the cause of peace.

NATO FORCES STAGE MANEUVERS:
Air and sea forces of America, Britain, and France join in NATO maneuvers in the Mediterranean. The exercise deals with a simulated submarine attack between Gibraltar and Malta a stern test of the might international fleet’s readiness.
SPAIN GREETS RETURNEES FROM REDS:
SPAIN 286 Spaniards held prisoner by Russia since World War Two come home. Members of the Blue Brigade, which fought under Hitler’s swastika, they spend almost a decade in forced labor camps.
AID TO KOREA:
CALIFORNIA An aerial Noah’s Ark flies to Korea, loaded with goats, rabbits and bees, collected by church and civic groups to re-stock war ravaged farms. In Korea farmers settle in U.N. territory north of the 38th Parallel. They’re welcomed by U.S. Maj. Gen. Magruder. Land that was once a battlefield will soon yield badly needed crops for Korea.
FRISKY FILLY WORLD’S SMALLEST:
NEW JERSEY The tiniest filly ever is shown. Just two weeks old, the foal stood only twenty inches at birth, wasn’t expected to survive. But she’s frisky as can be today though still less than half the size she should be.
NARCOTICS RING SMASHED:
SAN FRANCISCO The arrest of seven men smashes one of the biggest dope smuggling rings in years. Heroin and opium worth millions on the illicit market is seized by Federal agents.
YO-YO CONTEST:
NEW YORK Yo-yo’s are back and all the kids have got them. Demonstrators are mobbed by avid school kids as they show the latest techniques and stunts with the up again down again toy.
ATOMIC SAFETY SUIT:
WASHINGTON At Hanford Plutonium Works, a new safety suit for atomic technicians is shown. It’s a hollow plastic man that rests in “hot” rooms. Technicians crawl in through a “tail,” slip inside, and work in comfort and safety.
WATER SKI CHAMPIONSHIP:
FLORIDA The seventh annual Water Ski tournament, with top stars skimming the lagoon. Dick Pope Jr. gives a breath-taking slalom run, and Alfredo Mendoza jumps a record shattering 99 feet.
“FAITH” STAMP ISSUED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. President Eisenhower, Secretary of State Dulles and Postmaster General Summerfield take part in the biggest ceremony of its kind in Post Office history, marking the release of the first stamp with a religious message.
DENVER SEES ANTIQUE AUTO RACE:
DENVER Antique cars and costumed drivers “race” to Brighton and back commemorating the famous British road event. After the round trip, there’s an award for the best costume and the best restored car.

BRITISH SPEED ATOMIC RESEARCH:
ENGLAND Behind the scenes at Windscale, largest plutonium plant of the world’s third ranking atomic power. Two separate atomic piles transmute uranium into the basic nuclear fuel, as research is pressed on industrial development of atomic power, a field in which Britain is highly advanced.
U.S. TRAINS SPANISH PILOTS:
GERMANY At a U.S. Air Force Base, Spanish officers join Turks and Danes learning to fly jet aircraft under American instructors. Over 200 students form all the Western nations will go through the school.
SUZAN BALL PUTS CRUTCHES ASIDE TO WED:
CALIFORNIA Suzan Ball weds actor Dick Long in a happy ending to one of Hollywood’s most heart-warming love stories. The girl who lost her leg to cancer puts aside her crutches to walk to the altar, a moment of great happiness, and of triumph over tragedy.
KOREAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR ARRIVES:
SAN FRANCISCO The Korean Children’s Choir arrives to begin a nation-wide tour to aid their war ravaged land. U.S. school kids meet them at the airport for a heart-felt welcome.
KID FISHING CONTEST:
SEATTLE 2,000 hopeful small fry optimistically dangle their lines in the annual kids’ fishing derby. There’s a record turnout, and a record catch of shoes, cans, and starfish. But there are fish hooked, too and proud kids haul in a few whoppers.
ROYAL TOUR HOMEWARD BOUND:
AUSTRALIA Thousands turn out for a farewell glimpse of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh as the Royal Couple end their triumphal tour, embarking for the homeward leg of the world journey.
NAVY KIDS BOX:
ANNAPOLIS Midget maulers get under way full steam ahead. It’s a great show until a collision takes the wind out of their sails.

REDS HAMMER AT INDO SUPPLY LINES:
INDO-CHINA Reds, seeking to cut vital supplies to besieged Dien Bien Phu, mine roads and rail lines linking the seaport of Haiphong, and Hanoi, take-off point for the airlift to Dien Bien Phu another phase of the all out assault that has produced the war’s greatest crisis to date.
RUMANIAN PRISONERS ARRIVE IN AMERICA:
NEW YORK Teenage Constantin and Peter Georgescu, held by Rumania’s Red government 7 years in effort to force their father to spy on the U.S. are greeted at the airport by their mother a happy family reunion.
SPONGE FLEET BLESSED:
GREECE The annual departure of the Greek sponge flotilla, following a whirlwind of preparations for the 7-month voyage, brings solemn and impressive ceremonies of blessing, and heartfelt farewells from families and loved ones.
NEW BRITISH TANK:
ENGLAND Just released films show the latest model of the new model Conqueror, Britain’s latest. Figures are hush-hush, but it’s looks and performance alike are impressive.
GALA PARADE WELCOMES ORIOLES TO NEW HOME:
BALTIMORE A major league town again after 52 years, Baltimore welcomes its boys to their new diamond home with a gala parade. Vice-President Nixon leads the march, and just about everyone is on hand to cheer the team.
FRENCH FIRE FIGHTERS:
FRANCE Foremen demonstrate new aluminum foil fire-suits. Wearing the armor, only three-thousandths of an inch thick, they plunge into a 3,000 degree inferno, and emerge unsinged.
A BOY AND HIS PONY:
CALIFORNIA Youngster Ronnie Graham and his pony Socks put on an amusing and impressive demonstration of the stunt repertoire worthy of any circus or rodeo team. At 8 years, Ronnie is tops as a trainer.
BERLIN BARGES COLD WAR VICTIMS:
BERLIN Unsung victims of the Cold War are the families who own and live on almost 200 canal boats. Their only trade routes are between West Berlin and surrounding Red East Germany so they remain in idleness, a unique community afloat.
SEN. JOHNSON TALKS ON H-BOMB:
WASHINGTON, D.C. Discussing the enormous destructive power of the H-bomb, Senator Lyndon Johnson stresses that frictions between America and Russia must be smoothed to avoid atomic devastation.
