LINCOLN DAY DINNER:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Six thousand gather for the Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day box dinner, and hear President Eisenhower plead for the faith in America that carried Lincoln to victory.

MILLROSE GAMES:
NEW YORK CITY – Top track and field stars turn out for the Millrose Games. Bob Richards, the vaulting vicar, wins his 8th title. In the 880, double victory by a repeat in the 660 – to win the Wanamaker trophy as outstanding competitor.

CHINESE NEW YEAR:
SAN FRANCISCO – 75,000 throng the narrow, winding streets of Chinatown to welcome in the New Year – the Year of the Horse. Dragon dances, plenty of music, and the rattle of firecrackers help make it the biggest celebration in Chinatown’s history.

JAPANESE BALL FANS GIFT TO PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower is presented with a seven-hundred year old suit of Samurai armor on behalf of Japanese baseball fans by Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick and New York Giants’ owner Horace Stoneham.

AUSTRALIA WELCOMES QUEEN:
AUSTRALIA – Queen Elizabeth arrives in Sydney and record throngs – an estimated million – pay tribute with one of the greatest, most enthusiastic popular receptions on record.

PALM SPRINGS RODEO:
CALIFORNIA – Spills and thrills in the 14th annual Palm Springs Rodeo – with pretty girls riding four horses abreast over the hurdles – and cowboys trying to stay aboard the bucking broncs and Brahmas.

CABLE CARS HEADED FOR LAST ROUND-UP:
SAN FRANCISCOO – Civic controversy greets the decision to abandon the O’Farrel-Hyde cable car run. Partisans of the historic mode of transportation vow a sit-down strike in the car barn – and sentiment is rife.

FRENCH RUSH TROOPS TO MEET RED INDO-CHINA DRIVE:
INDO CHINA – French and Vietnam forces conduct a scorched earth retreat, falling back for a last ditch defense of Luang-Prabang, capital of Laos, in the face of a savage Red drive. Meanwhile, French reinforcements are rushed in by air and sea – and French ask for more U.S. material – vital in this war of attrition, where transport can be decisive.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – ion response to French pleas, transport planes and 200 U.S ground force technicians are dispatched on a non-combatant basis. Defense Secretary Charles Wilson explains the move, as fear of another Korea is voiced.

U.N. TROOPS SALUTE DEPARTING INDIANS:
KOREA – India’s General K.S. Thimayya reviews U.S. 8th Army troops prior to the departure of his command for India, their job as custodial forces for POW’s completed after five stormy months.

CARNIVAL DAYS DRAW NEAR:
ITALY – As the famous Viareggio Carnival draws near, craftsmen begin work on the huge comic effigies that are the highlights of each year’s parade. The secrets of the huge images construction – rolling eyes and all – are shown.

AIR FORCE GETS 500TH SKY TANKER:
SEATTLE – The U.s. Air Force takes delivery of its 500th “Stratofreighter,” the giant cargo plane that has won fame as an aerial tanker, refueling bombers in mid-air to extent their striking range indefinitely.

GASPARILLA’S GOLDEN JUBILEE:
FLORIDA – For the fiftieth year, the jolly invasion of Tampa by the pirate crew of Gasparilla is on – bigger and more festive than ever as the city sets a full week aside to mark the golden jubilee of the yearly carnival.

WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW:
NEW YORK – The 74th Annual Westminster Kennel Club with 2572 entries representing 106 breeds draws the eyes of dog lovers across the nation. Best is show award goes to Champion Carmor Rise and Shine, a huff-colored Cocker Spaniel.

DIVING CHAMPS SHOW FORM:
CALIFORNIA – In Palm Springs, Joaquin Capilla, Mexican diving champ, and Pat McCormick, Olympic women’s champ show their form with a thrilling variety of dives. Comedy by a group of aqua-clowns ends the exhibition with a laugh.

INDO-CHINA – Defense Minister Rene Plevin arrives to survey the mounting crisis in the war with the Reds. Elsewhere, on all colonial fronts, training is stepped up for troops that may be skipped to the strategic theatre of war.

SOUTH AMERICAN TOUR SHOWS U.S. AIR POWER:
PANAMA – President Remon and other Latin American dignitaries visit a group of U.s. jets and other craft beginning a 30-day tour of eleven Central and South American nations.

CRASH TESTS WRECK CAR:
CALIFORNIA – Spectacular crash tests wreck old cars to yield valuable data from dummy passengers. Grim results from smashes point the way to greater road safety.

OIL FIRE IN SEOUL:
KOREA – Men of United Nations and ROK forces battle a furious blaze in a large oil distribution point. Explosions of burning fuel hamper fire-fighters, but hours later, flames are controlled.

MARATHON ON ICE:
HOLLAND – Thousands line the banks of frozen canals to watch the skating marathon, a 124 mile grind along the ice. Flares light a night start, 7? hours later, the finish is reached.

COL. SCHWABLE HEARING:
VIRGINIA – marine Colonel Frank Schwable faces a court of inquiry for his conduct in Korea. He’s admitted confessing to germ warfare while under torture as a Red POW. The court will decide whether he must face court martial.

FRENCH SKI MEET:
FRANCE – The cream of the nation’s ski speedsters flash down the slopes of one of the continent’s most grueling downhill courses. Only the best, and luckiest, reach the finish.

CRUSADE FOR FREEDOM DRIVE:
ILLINOIS – The balloons that carry Crusade for Freedom messages over the Iron Curtain float over Springfield as part of a civic drive to aid the organization.

U-I OPENS MODERN CAPITAL HEADQUARTERS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Film officials, distributors, and exhibitors gather for the opening of Universal’s new home in Washington, embodying the ultimate in design for film exchange buildings.

FRANCE – Near Paris, one of the greatest nuclear research centers in Western Europe, already in operation, nears completion. Radio-isotopes from the massive atomic pile further scientific research. A new 25 million volt cyclotron will help unlock new atomic secrets.

IRON CURTAIN REFUGEES ARRIVE:
NEW YORK – 82 refugees from behind the Iron Curtain arrive, on a plane chartered by the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration. Families with little children, nuns, and others face a new life.

ALOHA TOGS FOR SUNNY ISLANDS:
HAWAII – Fashions for a tropic holiday, styles combining the sophistication of the West and the exotic grace of the Orient. Breath-taking Sari dresses, colorful play suits, and languorous lounging outfits.

JET TRAINER TESTED:
CALIFORNIA – Safety is the keynote of the newest jet trainer – designed for the specific function of training pilots for supersonic jet fighters and bombers. Easy handling and hot performance make it ideal for the task.

MICHIGAN – “Skeeter races” – ice boats sizzling their way across the frozen surface of Lake St. Clair – occasionally threatening to turn turtle as the wind whips them over the ice.

DULLES DENIES CHANCE OF RED CHINA RECOGNITION:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of State John Foster Dulles reports to the nation, explaining the accomplishments of the Berlin conference – and assuring America that the coming 5 power meetings in Geneva will not lead to recognition of Communist China.

ROCKET SLED:
NEW MEXICO – A super-sonic rocket sled is tested at a desert proving ground. Live volunteers may soon take the spectacular ride to test the effects of super-sonic speed on the unprotected human body.

GOLDEN GLOVES:
NEW YORK – An exciting series of bouts thrills spectators at the climax of the city’s 28th annual Golden Gloves. Young competitors go at it with all their skill and power – ring talent of the future in an action-packed exhibition.

NICE CARNIVAL:
FRANCE – Gaiety and merry-making fill the air with laughter as the gala, grotesque carnival procession passes by. Huge paper mache effigies smile and wink – and paraders and onlookers duel with hurled confetti.

GOVERNOR JOHNS GIVES ACIEVEMENTS OF ADMINISTRATION:
FLORIDA – Commenting on the Supreme Court decision that he may succeed himself in office, Governor Johns reviews the achievements of his administration.

CITRUS FAIR:
CALIFORNIA – Happy Holidays, is the theme of the 52nd annual Citrus Fair, with exhibits of dazzling ingenuity vying for honors. All made from citrus fruits, they include a barbecue, a model of Squaw Valley Lodge, and the winner – a bigger than life size bass viol.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR FOR FASHION:
PARIS – Spring fashions accent the eternal feminine, with emphasis on trim waists, modeled bodice, and luxurious fabrics. Rich textures and languorous lines make an enthralling fashion combination.

ATHELETICS OPEN SPRING TRAINING:
FLORIDA – Manager Eddie Joost inspects the Philadelphia Athletics as spring training opens. Strengthened with young talent through winter trades, the emphasis is on speed and hustle.

EXTRA! SHOOTING IN CONGRESS:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ruthless fanatic violence strikes in the halls of Congress. Three men and a woman – believed to be members of the Puerto Rican nationalist gang that attempted to assassinate President Truman in 1950 – open fire on Congressmen from the Visitor’s Gallery. Five lawmakers are wounded, in an act of wanton violence that shocks the nation.

FLYING BOAT TESTED:
CALIFORNIA – The “Tradewind,” the Navy’s newest flying boat, makes its first flight by ne turbo-prop engines, the 80 ton transport will enter trans-Pacific service.

RED HOSTAGES FREED:
GREECE – Bitter memories of guerilla war are revived with the return from Iron Curtain captivity of 1251 Greeks seized as hostages by the Reds as long as four years ago.

DODGERS TRAIN – DRESSEN ON COAST:
FLORIDA – Under the eye of their new manager Walter Alston, the Dodgers train for the coming diamond season, and another pennant battle. The return of big Don Newcombe strengthens the pitching staff, rouses hopes for another World Series – this year, a winning series.

CALIFORNIA – Charlie Dressen, erstwhile manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, looks over the Oakland Oaks, of the Pacific Coast League – his new team. Does he miss the Dodgers? Not so you’d notice. Too busy.

SULTAN TOURS MOROCCO:
MOROCCO – Sultan Sidi Ben Arafa of Morocco begins a 15-day tour that will carry him to all principal cities of the French colony in an attempt to ease unrest that’s grown since his appointment as spiritual leader.

MICRO MIDGETS – NEW AUTO CRAZE:
CALIFORNIA – Micro-midgets burn up the track in auto racing’s newest craze. They’re strictly limited in size and cost, powered by one lung engines, but they’re so close to the ground 60 mph is a thrilling pace. They’re fun to drive – and fun to watch.

COLDBAR SUITS SHOWN:
VIRGINIA – The Quartermaster Corps demonstrates the new Coldbar suits, developed with an eye to Arctic defenses. Made of an elastic foam-like material, they repel water, retain body heat to keep the wearer warm.

PAN-AMERICAN NATIONS OPEN TENTH PARLEY:
VENEZUELA – Twenty nations meet in the 10th Inter-American Conference at Caracas. The American delegation, headed by Secretary of State Dulles hopes to obtain cooperation of other nations in barring further infiltration of Red influence.

FRENCH BUILD SMALLEST JET:
FRANCE – The world’s smallest jet is the Payen Flechair – with 16 feet wingspan and weight of less than 1400 pounds, a spectacular sight with its needle nose and Delta wing.

YANKEES TRAIN AS RASCHI JOINS CARDS:
ST. PETERSBURG – Casey Stengle takes a look at the World’s Champions and sees a host of talent he hopes will carry the team to a 6th straight series triumph. Missing from the scene is ace pitcher Vic Raschi, now wearing Cardinal uniform, who works out under the eye of Manager Eddie Stanky.

MARDI GRAS:
NEW ORLEANS – The annual whirlwind of gayety sweeps through the streets of the Crescent City. The Proteus Parade is more colorful than ever, and the maskers make merry in the same mad way as always.

BRAVES EYE PENNANT:
BRADENTOWN, FLA. – The acquisition of Bobby Thomson from the Giants, sets pennant fever racing through the team. With Del Crandall, Joe Adcock, and slugger Eddie Matthews on hand, this could be their year.

BRAZIL FILM FESTIVAL:
BRAZIL – Movie stars visit the city of Sao Paulo, holding its first motion picture festival. Among the many screen luminaries present are Irene Dunne, Walter Pidgon, and Rhonda Fleming. The delegation from America is headed by Eric Johnston, Motion Picture Association, who explains the aims and aspirations of the industry.

KELLY KAYOED IN BELFAST:
BELFAST – It’s Kelly versus Cohen, a Frenchman, in Northern Ireland, a land of Kellys. Kelly holds the European bantamweight crown, but it’s not his night – and before a crowd of Kellys, Kelly’s kayoed.

THRONGS CHEER QUEEN ELIZABETH:
AUSTRALIA – Queen Elizabeth’s tour of Australia continues, to the same wild acclaim she’s received ever since her arrival. The streets of Melbourne are jammed by tens of thousands cheering themselves hoarse as the Queen passes.

SOX START 1954 TRAINING:
SARASOTA, FLA. – The Red Sox are hard at work – Mel Parnell, Jim Piersall, George Kell, Jackie Jensen, and the rest training busily for the coming season. But Ted Williams is on the sidelines, due to injuries, and Lou Boudreau is looking slightly worried.

DULLES ASKS AID IN OUSTING REDS FROM HEMISPHERE:
VENEZUELA – Secretary of State John Foster Dulles addresses the Tenth Inter-American Conference, urging a united front in preventing further Red infiltration. Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Toriello warns against interference in internal affairs.

PUERTO RICAN TERRORISTS SEIZED:
PUERTO RICO – Pedro Albizu Campos and other leaders of the terroristic nationalist Party are seized after gun-battle with police in the aftermath of the group’s assassination attempt in Congress.

MAU MAU LEADER CAPTURED:
KENYA – As Britain’s Colonial Secretary Oliver Lyttleton visits Kenya and joins a typical jungle patrol, a leader of the terrorist group, General China, is captured – offering the first contact with the upper levels of the Mau Mau.

SPRING TRAINING CLEVELAND INDIANS:
TUCSON, ARIZ. – Manager Al Lopez has his Indians hustling. Pitching looks good as usual, headed by Bob Lemon, Mike Garcia, and Early Wynn, and the Cleveland club is looking ahead to a big season.

AIR FORCE TOUR VISITS CUBA:
CUBA – The U.S. Air Force “Wings Over The Americas” squadron visits Cuba. Spectacular aerial displays of stunts and precision flying by jets winds up the month long tour of the Western Hemisphere.

NEW YORK GIANTS:
PHOENIX, ARIZ. – Manager Leo Durocher is all smiles at the return from Army service of the inimitable Willie Mays. Reinforcements for the mound staff, obtained from the Braves, brighten hopes for the coming diamond year.

JEWS HONOR PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower is presented with a medal commemorating the first Jewish settlement in America by American-Jewish Tercentenary Delegation.

CYCLING:
ITALY – The pedal pushing under pressure as Europe’s top cyclists vie in a rugged cross country race combining features of a steeple-chase with a speed test.
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Motorcycle maniacs gather for the Nationals – a thrill-packed event with spills a plenty – 100 miles of scorching along the sand, in the sports top event of the year.

DUTCH OIL FIRE:
HOLLAND – Near the port of Rotterdam, two huge gasoline tanks explode, burn for two days threatening a conflagration that could paralyze the port. Firemen battle round the clock to stem the flames.

PRESIDENT PLEADS FOR RACE EQUALITY:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower addresses the Freedom Fulfillment Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, assuring this full support for the goals of the organization, as the NAACP launches the strongest campaign in its history.

MOROCCO SULTAN ESCAPES GRENADE:
MOROCCO – New violence in French Morocco. As the pro-French Sultan prays, a grenade explodes in the Mosque, wounding the elderly leader, his Grand Vizir, and two others.

TOTS PREVIEW TOYS:
NEW YORK – The Toy Fair offers youngsters a preview of what’s in store for ’54 from the nation’s toymakers. Among the outstanding items, a mechanical man and some huge Teddy Bears.

WHEAT STORED IN MOTHBALL FLEET:
SEATTLE – With grain elevators glutted, 30 million bushels of surplus wheat find storage space on freighters of the mothball fleet, laid up at Northwestern piers in case of future need.

ICE BREAKERS BATTLE NORTH:
ARCTIC – Led by the ice-breaker West Wind, the navy and Coast Guard battle the frozen Arctic Ocean to supply the Air Force’s installations at the top of the world.

INTERNATIONAL HAIR STYLES:
NEW YORK – New hair-dos are introduced by top stylists at the International Beauty Show. Most are convertible to suit the mood. Featured are the Manhattan, the Venetian, and the Parisian.

KOREAN POOCH PARADE:
KOREA – Marine mutts are on parade – a non-thoroughbred dog show staged by the Marines to aid the March of Dimes. Almost every rice paddy pup entered gets an award of some kind.

4-H CLUBBERS MEET PRESIDENT:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As 2 million members of the farm youth group celebrate 4-H Club Week, the 6 outstanding members visit the White House to present the organization’s annual report to the President.

WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS:
SWEDEN – Spectacular speed skiing in the downhill race of the World Skiing Championships. Top skibirds of two continents plummet down the slopes. The winner, Austria’s Christian Pravda, who led his team to a clean sweep of the thrilling event.

NASHVILLE EXHIBITOR GETS FILM AWARD:
Kermit C. Stengel, Director of the Tennessee Theatre Owners Association, receives the 1953 Film Achievement Award of Look Magazine for his work with the Red Cross, Boy Scouts, church and civic welfare groups.
