AT SEA – The Navy tests its new steam catapult, launching the heaviest types of carrier-planes. The “steam slingshot” offers greater power and more safety than hydraulic types now in use.

INDO-CHINA – Evacuation begins from the key northern city as Red forces close their pincer movement. Refugees crowd the roads out of the city, a lucky few getting space on transport planes being flown to safety as the battle nears Hanoi.

CENTRAL EUROPE HIT BY FLOODS:
GERMANY – Swollen by a week of torrential rains, the Danube and a dozen tributaries overflow in Central Europe’s worst flood in centuries. Thousands are homeless, many killed, on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

BEAUTIES GATHER FOR GLOBAL TITLE:
NEW YORK CITY – New York greets lovely visitors passing through en route to the Miss Universe Pageant. Among them, beauty queens from France, Italy, Argentina, Chile and six other nations.

VENEZUELA PARADE:
VENEZUELA – Venezuela celebrates Fatherland Week, marking 143 years of independence with a series of gala parades and anti-communist demonstrations – an impressive show of prosperity and progress.

WATER SKIER GOES FOR AMAZING FLIGHT:
SACRAMENTO – Water ski wizard Vern Crary takes to the air hanging from a giant kite that carries him 65 feet aloft. He touches down neat as you please on his skis the first time but makes a splash landing second time around.

ROUGH SAILING FOR HAWAII RAFT:
SAN FRANCISCO – A modern argosy of adventures and misadventures befalling the raft Lehi and her amateur crew attempting to drift to Hawaii without food or water – trusting to the bounty of Nature and meeting nothing but trouble.

HOME TOWN HONORS COLLEEN MILLER:
TOPPENISH, WASH. – Colleen Miller comes home to a town that gives the rising young actress a royal reception. At the 32nd annual Toppenish Pow-Wow she’s made an honorary princess of the Yakima Indians.

HOPES RISE FOR INDO-CHINA TRUCE:
Savage fighting pushes the French defense perimeter back towards Hanoi as Communist forces continue their Red River offensive. But on the diplomatic front, Premier Mendes-France returns to Geneva after talks with Secretary of State Dulles confident on honorable truce will soon be reached.

SCORES DEAD IN WAKE OF DANUBE FLOODS:
The worst European flood in centuries continues as the rampaging Danube and its tributaries inundate 400 miles in Germany and Austria, killing scores, leaving an estimated 70,000 homeless and wreaking nearly 1 billion dollars damages.

AIR FORCE “KINDER-LIFT”:
GERMANY – The U.S. Air Force’s annual “kinder-lift” flies some 1400 Berlin children to West Germany for summer vacations, leap-frogging hundreds of miles of Red enslaved East Germany.

AMERICAN LEAGUE WINS ALL-STAR GAME:
CLEVELAND, OHIO – The under-dog American Leaguers out-slug the senior circuit team to bring Manager Casey Stengel his first All Star victory. Al Rosen and Gus Bell star in the record-breaking 11-9 slug-fest.

“FATHER OF PHOTOGRAPHY” HONORED:
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The issuance of a special commemorative postage stamp and memorial services at the home of George Eastman mark the centennial of the “father of photography.”

SUMMER SKI MEET:
SALISBURY, CONN. – 20 tons of crushed ice and bales of hay are the recipe for mid-summer ski-carnival. Hurtling head first into bales of hay at the bottom of the run, these die-hard ski-birds can hardly wait for December.

11 DEAD IN MUNITIONS BLAST:
CHESTERTOWN, MD. – A day of grief and terror as a munitions and fireworks plant blows up – a 90 minute series of blasts that kills 11, wounds 50, and sends a thousand townspeople fleeing their homes in terror as the 24 acre plant is razed by the titanic concussion.

POWERHOUSE IN A MOUNTAIN:
BRITISH COLUMBIA – The grandeur of the Canadian Rockies is a scenic backdrop for one of the greatest engineering feats of modern times – a 13 story powerhouse carved out of the very heart of a mountain – part of the immense Kitimat project.

TOYS OF TOMORROW:
NEW YORK – Santa’s toyland preview modern toys for the modern youngsters – all the way from space suits to back-flipping toy dogs. The cameraman “dances” off with top honors.

“MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION” PREMIERE:
CLEVELAND – Jane Wyman, Agnes Moorhead, and producer Ross Hunter arrive for the premiere of Lloyd Douglas’ compelling love-story “Magnificent Obsession,” made into a great motion picture drama.

JET TRANSPORT TEST FLOWN:
SEATTLE – The Boeing 707, America’s first entry in the jet transport field is test-flown for the first time. The giant craft can serve as a super speed luxury transport or as an aerial tanker for the Strategic Air Command.

BRITISH DEFENSE MINISTER ARRIVES:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – British Defense Minister Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis arrives for a 2-week visit. He’s greeted with full military honors by General Matthew Ridgway.

HOLLYWOOD GOLD CUP:
INGLEWOOD, CAL. – Betting favorite “Rejected” makes a stirring bid to overtake front running “Correspondent,” but jockey Johnny Longden staves off the last minute try to win the $100,000 turf classic by a length.

WORLD BEAUTIES IN “MISS UNIVERSE” PARADE:
LONG BEACH, CAL. – Beauty queens from every part of the globe gather for eye filling preliminaries to the final selection of the world’s prettiest girl, “Miss Universe 1954.”

GENEVA TRUCE ENDS INDO CHINA FIGHTING:
The Geneva conference ends with the signing of a cease-fire between French and Vietminh forces – a truce that places 12 million behind the Iron Curtain in ending the cruel and costly 8-year conflict. In Washington, President Eisenhower says the U.S. will observe the truce terms, and calls for a collective security pact to guard Southeast Asia.

DROUGHT SEARS MID WEST:
MID-WEST – No rain, and temperatures over 100 degrees dry up creeks and rivers, parching the land and crops. Farmers anxiously search the sky for signs of rain as the drought goes on, with little hope it will abate soon.

DANCING FINGERS:
GERMANY – Tom thumb ballerinas perform with remarkable grace and realism – a charming performance that showcases the digital dexterity of their “creator”, Senta Lenz.

ARMY SHOWS SUPER CAMERA:
NEW YORK – The Army shows its giant new “Peeping Tom” camera. It’s 100-inch focal length makes possible clear photos at 30-mile ranges. It’s tested on the New York skyline from 26 miles off, with amazing results.

MISS UNIVERSE HOPEFULS VISIT MOVIE STUDIO:
UNIVERSAL CITY, CAL. – Contenders for the Miss Universe title, from every part of the world and every state of the Union, are special guests at the Universal-International Studios. Lex Barker, Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler are among the stars greeting the lovely visitors.

CHIMP AT CARNIVAL:
PALISADES PARK, N.J. – Mambo the chimp sees the amusement park the way people do – taking all the rides with his pals, Kathy, 4, and Warren, 6. It’s an outing with all the trimmings from the merry-go-round to cotton candy.

PRESIDENTS PORTRAIT PRESENTED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – British Defense Minister Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunnis presents President Eisenhower with his portrait by the late Sir Oswald Birley, one of Britain’s finest artists.

INDO CHINA – 3,000 Vietnamese march in Hanoi, protesting the partition agreement that puts their homeland in Red hands. Meanwhile, 100 exchanged POW’s board LST’s for evacuation and social services mobilize to aid refugees flooding into the city.

WALTER BEDELL SMITH ARRIVES:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Under-Secretary of State Walter Bedell Smith arrives home from Geneva after completing one of the most delicate diplomatic assignments of recent years.

SUMMER SANTAS:
NEW YORK – Five Santas stroll the sweltering streets handing out free gifts to young and old – but when the mercury hits 90, they call it quits and head for an air-conditioned restaurant.

“ANGEL OF DIEN BIEN PHU” WELCOMED:
NEW YORK – A gala parade up Broadway welcomes the “Angel of Dien Bien Phu,” Nurse Genevieve de Galard-Terraube, the first foreign notable invited to the United States by Congress since Kossuth and Lafayette.

FLYING CARS:
CHICAGO – Newest carnival chiller-thriller, the “Flying Cars.” Scooting up and around inside a giant wheel they carry the rider head over heels in a dizzying dare devil’s delight.

EUCHARISTIC YEAR OPENS:
RIO DE JANEIRO – 200,000 throng Rio’s huge Maracana Football Stadium for services inaugurating the Eucharistic Year. Cardinal Jayme de Barros Camara, Archbishop of Brazil, presides.

“MR. MUSCLE” CHOSEN:
NEW YORK – Veteran physical culturist steals the spotlight from “Mr. Muscles” as he does a hand-stand and a jig to show he’s still the old master – in his 80’s – before presenting the winner’s cup.

HISTORIC TRAINS ON PARADE:
BALTIMORE – A rolling review of railroad progress as historic trains from the “Tom Thumb” of the 1820’s up to a modern Diesel locomotive parade past the camera.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Korean President Syngman Rhee urges U.S. air and naval support in an attack on Red China, addressing a Joint Session of Congress. A standing ovation greets the fiery Asian patriot, though response to his appeal is cautious.

‘ANGEL OF DIEN BIEN PHU’ HONORED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – French Nurse Genevieve de Galard-Terraube, first foreign woman ever invited to the U.S. by Congress, receives the Medal of Freedom from President Eisenhower in White House ceremonies.

U.S., CANADIAN CADETS IN JOINT MANEUVER:
VIRGINIA – U.S. and Canadian Naval Cadets join battle-hardened Marines in a mock amphibious assault, hitting the beaches at Camp Pendleton in an impressive demonstration of international service “unification.”

EGYPT CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE, SUEZ PACT:
EGYPT – Egypt stages a spectacular double celebration marking the second anniversary of its independence and the signing of the pact under which Britain will evacuate the Suez Canal Zone.

100-MILE WALKING RACE:
ENGLAND – Determined Britishers are undaunted by pelting rain as they set forth on a walking race from Blackpool to Manchester and back – 100 miles in all. The champ, 43 year old Vic Stone with record time of 17 hours and 22 minutes – a walk-away!

FRENCH PRESIDENT VISITS HOLLAND:
HOLLAND – French President Rene Coty is received by Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard as he arrives in the Netherlands on a state goodwill visit, renewing the two nations’ traditional friendship.

GLOBETROTTERS’ COURT COMEDY FOR CHARITY:
MONTICELLO, N.Y. – The Harlem Globetrotters show the unique brand of basketball that has brought them international fame, in an exhibition game with the House of David team. Ace court comic Goose Tatum dazzles the eye with his wizardry – for fun and sweet charity.

HAILE SELASSIE VISITS TITO:
YUGOSLAVIA – Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie receives an enthusiastic popular greeting as he visits Yugoslavia en route home from this tour of the United States.

BOSTON – Governor Christian Herter signs a proclamation for “Jimmy Fund” time as civic and sports leaders look on. A visit to the Fund’s building shows why the hopes of thousands of young cancer victims are centered there.
