A massive clean-up job underway in four Southern sttes in the aftermath of floods that sent a dozen rivers overflowing their banks. Tornados followed in some sections and authorities fear the disaster will approach that of 1957.

U.S. RECOGNIZES NEW SYRIA REGIME
The seventh revolution in Syria since the French relinquished their mandate in 1941 sees a clique that favors Egypt's Nassar take power. The U.S. recognizes the government as long as they pledge to recognize their international obligations.

LAND MINE DOWNS TWO PLANES
A defective fuse triggers an aerial land mine prematurely and sends fragments flying that set two planes on fire during an Eglin Air proving Ground test. Both pilots bail out in this dramatic record.

SKIERS SMASH RECORDS IN FRANCE
The downhill tests at Chamonix bring out europe's best who set new speed records in the downhill. For the first time helicopters give us a bird's eye view of the proceedings.

YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY
December 15, 1939. The German pocket battleship Graf Spee is chased into Montevideo harbor by three British cruisers. She must leave the neutral port or be interned and her Nazi captain chooses to scuttle the Graf Spee rather than let her fall in Brittish hands.

MOTHER SETON: NUN TO BECOME FIRST UNITED STATES SAINT:
Mother Elizabeth seton has become the first native-bon American to be solemnly beatified by the Roman atholic Church, a prelude to the canonization and sainthood. Here are scenes that reflect the life of the newly proclaimed "Blessed" - her first school buildings in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she is buried and where she founded the parachial school system.
In Vatican City, Pope John XXIII leads thousands of the faithful in the first veneration of Mother Seton. Among the 4,000 pilgrims fromm the United States is Ann C'Neill, 15. Mother SEton is credited with curing her of blood cancer.

SUSPENSE STORY: NATIONAL PRESS CLUB HEARS HIRCHCOCK: The man who chilled movie patrons long before air-conditioning, Alfred Hitchcock is a guest of the National Press Club. The occasion is his 30th year in the movies and the release of his fiftieth movie: "THE BIRDS". He has the press club members laughing - - - - - - - nervously/

SKY THRILLER: "CHUTING STARS PLAY TAG ALOFT:
The Navy's crack stunt team, the "Chutting Stars" have a final dress rehearsal before beginning their third year of thrilling crowds all over the world. They fall free for two miles before opening their chutes - meanwhile they maneuver as if all of infinity was their stage....

U.S. -LATIN TALES: 7 PRESIDENTS CONFER IN COSTA RICA:
President Kennedy receives a tumultuois welcome in San Jose as he arrives in Costa Rica for a "Little Summit" conference with the heads of six Central American nations. Nearly everybody in San Jose - 250,000 people - turn out to cheer Mr. Kennedy on his way to the first session of the conference. At the National theatre a "Declaration of Central America" is drawn up calling for new measures to meet subveraive aggression from Cuba. Mr. Kennedy pledges new aid for economic development both in Central and South America.

THAW TRIGGERS LANDSLIDE IN JAPAN:
Roaring down the mountains that tower over the Japanese waterfront twon of Nou, a landslide cuts the village in two and pushes a crack passenger express train into the sea. Tons of dirt and rock crcush thrity hourses and despite the cataclysmic force of the slide, no one was killed.

HATS TO TURN A PRETTY HEAD:
Lades have something in their future to chase the doldrums of winter. A preview of hats for the Easter Parade features turbans... but they are not all severe. Flossy flowered fantasies are forecast, too. From turbans to cartwheels - there's something for every parader come Easter......

KING HASSAN AT WHITE HOUSE: King Hassan II of Morocco arrives in Washington for a two day visit with President Kennedy. Union Station concourse is cleared for the welcoming ceremonies, after which there is a gala parade through the sunny, sprintime-like streets of the nation's Capital.

ONE-MAN HELICOPTER:
A one-man helicopter called the "Gyro-Copter" is introduced in Florida as a possible boon to long distance fishermen. Easily maneuverable and carrying a load of 250 pounds (pilot included), it operates about as easily as an outboard motorboat, but with far greater range.

PIGEON RACE HERALDS OPENING OF "THE BIRDS":
Alfred Hitchcock's "THE BIRDS" opens on Broadway, and the Director with his new star Tippe Hedren, opens the cages for a 1,000 pigeons. They take off for home in the Alfred Hitchcock Homing Pigeon Handicap, celebrating the opening of the film.

SPORTS

BRITISH BOATING CLASSIC:
England's inter-collegiate sport classic, the Oxford-Cambridge boat race starts off with favored Cambridge well ahead. But the Oxford crew, stroked by American Duncan Spencer forge ahead and cross the finish line an easy winner in the Century-old rivalry.

YESTURDAY'S BIG STORY
In April 1945, Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President of the United States just four hours after the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt shocked and saddened the free world. Man and women wept openly as the funeral procession moved slowly through the streets of Washington en route to the final resting place at Hyde Park, New York.

NEW YORK HAS NEWSPAPERS AFTER LONG STRIKE:
There's a front page story in New York as the presses roll once more after a 114-day blackout of the City's major newspapers. Once again the City rooms hum --- the tickers click, the linotypes clank and the smell of printer's ink is in the air. The strike cost is estimated at $450,000,000 and the strikers won $12.63 weekly benefits. House-wives won, too - ever try to line a bureau drawer with a radio?

GOTHAM WELCOMES KING HASSAN:
After an official reception in Washington, King Hassan of Morocco gets the traditional one in New York - a parade up lower Broadway to City Hall. The 33-year-old Monarch breaks with precedent and walks part of the way.

"THE UGLY AMREICAN' FIRST FILM PREMIERE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: Merlon Brando, producer-director George Englund and H.K. Kukrit are the moving light behing "THE UGLY AMERICAN" which has its world premiere in Bangkok. President Milton Rackmil and Vice-PResident Americo Aboaf of UNIVERSAL PICTURES are also in attendance as the King and Queen of Thailand preside at the gala premiere of a picture that promises to cause more talk than any motion picture in recent years.

SPORTS

THE GRAND NATIONAL:
That supreme event in steeple-shasing, The Grand National, sees 47 horses go to the post in the Aintree classic. Gregory Peck has a horse entered, but he has better luck in the movies as "Out And About" leads most of the way over the 30 jumps four-and-a-half mile turf course. At the finish however, it's AYALA who comes out of nowhere to capture one of the most thrilling of all Grand Nationals.........

NEW CUBAN RAIDS: KENNEDY SAYS ATTACKS DON’T ADVANCE CAUSE:
Seventeen men aboard a small twin-engined boat are picked up by British authorities in the Bahamas as they prepare to attack Cuban shipping. President Kennedy calls these raids ill-advised and feels that the raiders would do more good by joining the United States armed forces as have some of their fellow patriots.

SIR WINSTON HONORARY U.S. CITIZEN
As Lady Churchill celebrates her 78th Birthday, it is announced that Congress has made Sir Winston Churchill an honorary United States citizen, the only man apart from Lafayette to be so honored. His leadership during World War II contributed greatly to the accolade.

TRAGEDY IN BALI:
Thousands die as volcano erupts. Nearly two thousand Balinese die as Gunung Agung erupts and showers the island with hugs rocks and molten lave. The natives believe it was an act of their angry Gods and pray for mercy in a ruined temple. The Indonesian government may evacuate the Island completely.

TYPHOID EPIDEMIC SWEEPS SWISS RESORT:
The town of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn is a ghost town after an epidemic of typhoid fever sweeps the village. More than 450 persons are hospitalized but few deaths are reported.

CHERRY BLOSSOM TIME IN CAPITAL:
When the Cherry Trees blossom in Washington can the tourists be far behind? They are out in full flower and the national capital is framed in a bower of beauty…..

EASTER AROUND THE WORLD:
The most joyous day in Christiandom sees churches from Maine to Hawaii thronged with the devout as they celebrate the Resurrection of Christ – each in his own way – each in his own faith. The glory that is Easter is reflected in the facades of churches majestic and humble; it is found in the hearts that worship the miracle that was Christ’s passion and the empty tomb on Easter Day. New Yorkers throng to parade along Fifth Avenue, services are held at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington and at the National Cathedral. As the nation rejoices they pause in sorrow – flags fly at half-mast in memory of those heroes who died aboard the submarine THRESHER. In Vatican City Pope John gives his traditional blessing, “URBI ET ORBI” – to Rome and to the world. Christ is honored in every corner of the earth on this Easter Day of rejoicing.

“THE UGLY AMERICAN” NEW MOVIE HAS DUAL PREMIERE:
Gala premieres on both coasts mark the debut of “THE UGLY AMERICAN”, adapted from the runaway best-seller. The Thai Ambassador heads the list of celebrities at the Hollywood premiere. Marlon Brando, the movie’s star, attends in Hollywood and then jets East to be present at the New York opening. The picture inaugurates a new theatre – the Translux East – and Mr. Brando presides at the official opening.

NAVY FLEDGLINGS LET FLY:
They launch a fleet of new light battle cruisers at the Naval Academy. They weigh 30 pounds and up (but not much) and like all Navy armament and personnel they are scrappers. Of course, thesee are the young boxers who stage a show each year at the Academy. The fists fly – but they play it cool – it winds up in an ice cream feast.
