NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1963 (UE63053)

KENNEDY VISITS POPE: AUDIENCE CLIMAXES EUROPEAN TRIP:
Vatican City is one of the last stops for President Kennedy on his European visit and he is received with pomp and ceremony. He has a private, 40-minute conversation with Pope Paul VI and then Secretary of State Dean Rusk and the other 14 members of the party hear the Pope reads a statement lauding the United States for its role in world affairs. It's an historic meeting between two world leaders.

CANADA RESTORES FRENCH FORTRESS:
In the 18th Century when France ruled in the New World, Cape Breton Island played a key role in coastal defenses. Fort Louisbourg was a mighty citadel that changed hands many times between the English and the French as they fought for control of Quebec and Eastern Canada. Now the Fort is being restored and frogmen are recovering artifacts from beneath the waters near the redoubt where many ships were sunk. The Canadians hope to have the restoration completed in time for Canada's Centennial Year in 1967.

YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY

Prelude to Victory… Paris is freed! Members of the French underground - patriots who fought the Germans during the long occupation come out into the open to clean out snipers - German stragglers and Frenchmen who had collaborated with the Nazis. It's the prelude to the entrance of victorious Allied forces into the City of Light that spent four long years under Nazi rule. There is literally dancing in the streets of the freed city as Allies push onto the North. The Nazis were doomed. Germany's surrender was but 9 months away…

ARGENTINE VOTES: PERONISTS SHOW LITTLE STRENGTH:
The followers of Juan Peron, ousted Argentinian dictator, put up a poor showing as the country goes to the polls to elect a President just 15 months after the military ousted President Arturo Frondizi. Although he fled the country 8 years ago, Peron still has his adherents and he advised them to cast blank ballots. Only 15% are thus cast - against 1/3 just a few years ago. Dr. Arturo Illia polls the most votes and will probably become President.

DEDICATE PLAQUE TO MOVIE PIONEER:
At the annual meeting of the Directors of the WILL ROGERS HOSPITAL in Saranac Lake, New York, a memorial is unveiled to John J. O'Connor, a movie pioneer whose wisdom and foresight contributed greatly to the hospital that treats members of the entertainment world.

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES CONVENE IN NEW YORK:
Yankee Stadium is crowded with 67,000 members of the sect who meet in one of 25 world-wide conventions. Mantle and Berra would never recognize their playground…

HONOR MOUNT EVEREST CONQUERORS:
President Kennedy presents Gold Medals to members of the expedition which conquered Mt. Everest, including the first American to scale the summit.

YACHTS RACE AROUND THE ISLE OF WIGHT:
The world’s biggest yacht race sees more than 200 boats of all classes battle strong winds in a six-hour race around the island.

A REWARDING SATURDAY AFTERNOON;
“Y FLASH” flashes down the stretch to cop the Hollywood Derby and nearly $80,000 dollars. He’s no Y-Flash-in-the-pan as he runs his carning to more than $200,000.

RAILROAD STRIKE HALTED: BOARD TO STUDY JOB LAYOFF ISSUE:
The White House is the scene of frenzied activity as governmental leaders meet with representatives of management and labor to avert a nation-wide railroad strike. President Kennedy makes the announcement.

LONDON CLASHES MARK GREEK VISIT:
King Paul and Queen Fredericka of Greece arrive in England on a state visit and are closely guarded by police. Leftists and "ban the bomb” demonstrators stage a protest in Trafalger Square over the visit and demand the freeing of jailed Reds in Greece.

MOVIE MILESTONE: UNIVERSAL CITY STARTS EXPANSION:
A golden rivet is driven at Universal City to begin the construction of a multi million dollar complex to house Music Corporation of America’s entertainment arms. Universal Pictures, Revue Productions and Decca Records will have facilities here. Jules Stein and Milton Rackmil, entertainment executives, drive the first rivet…

ALL-STAR GAME; WILLIE MAYS STEALS ALL THE HONORS;
The All-Star game between the American and National Leagues at Cleveland proves to be a Mays Day in July. The amazing Willie Mays dominates the event as he steals two bases, drives in two runs and scores twice. He tops things off with a spectacular catch in center field as the Nationals come out on top – 5 to 3.

FERRY DISASTER: ARGENTINE SINKING TAKES HEAVY TOLL:
A ferry, bound from Montevideo to Buenos Aires hits a submerged wreck in the River Plate and 60 people die in the disaster. It was bound across the wide river on an overnight trip and many of the sleeping passengers were trapped in their bunks. Survivors said that safety precautions were inadequate and that there were lifeboats for only a fourth of the passengers.

TRAPPED BOYS SAVED: LOST FOR 2 DAYS IN ABANDONED MINE:
After 50 hours of terror, three teen-age boys are rescued from an abandoned coal mine near Pittsburgh. Two hundred rescue workers searched for the boys after their bicycles were found at the pit entrance. They came through with few ill effects - and a vow to do future adventuring above ground.

U THANT MEETS WITH POPE PAUL:
The Secretary-General of the U.N. has an audience with the Pope and confers on the status of Cardinal Mindszenty who has been a virtual prisoner in the American legation in Budapest since 1956.
WALK, don’t swim, TO THE ISLAND:
The adventuresome in the Netherlands have come up with Island hopping – on foot. When the tide in the Wadden Zee begins to ebb – they take off for the East Frisian Island and make the 7 1/2 miles across the sea bed before the tide comes in again.

OUTSIDER TAKES RICH RACE:
"CADIZ", a horse from New Zealand, runs the favorites, including "Crimson Satan", right into the ground as he wins $102,000 in the Hollywood Gold Cup. The horse from Down Under repays his backers 24 to 1.

HOPE FOR TEST BAN: EAST-WEST PARLEY MAKING PROGRESS:
What could well be a turning point in history. Chairman Khrushchev is at the opening sessions as the United States, Britain and Russia meet for atom test ban talks. With the rift widening between the Soviets and Red China, observers feel that the talks have a good chance of succeeding.

FRANCE MARKS BASTILLE DAY:
The 174th Anniversary of the French Revolution sees a huge parade through the streets of Paris. General Charles De Gaulle presides as the largest crowd since liberation day in 1945 lines the streets.

HOW TO RUN A RAILROAD:
A flat car is adapted to the automobile in Britain. The railroad car is equipped with rollers that are driven by the auto wheels. This drives the train wheels and these gals take off. Tickets, please.

SET NEW POLE VAULT RECORD:
John Pennel, warming up for the U.S.- Soviet meet in Moscow, hits 16 Feet 8 3/4 inches for a new world mark. It breaks the one held by Brian Sternberg who was paralyzed in a training accident.

YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY

THE SQUALUS:
On May 23, 1939, the submarine "SQUALUS" dived with an air intake valve open. Fifty-nine men were trapped inside and 33 were saved with a newly-developed diving bell. After four months THE SQUALUS was raised and recommissioned as the "Sailfish". It was one of the Navy's worst peacetime submarine disasters until the “Thresher” tragedy.

HEAVENLY SHOW: TOTAL EXLIPS THRILLS MILLIONS:
Scientists take advantage of a total eclipse of the moon to make readings they were unable to do a few short years ago. Rockets are sent aloft to record phenomena while at the same time the effect of the eclipse on herring on the ocean floor is studied.

A KENNEDY PLAYS TO A FULL HOUSE:
Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston has a full house of Kennedy small-fry as he baptizes Christopher George Kennedy at a church in Hyannis Port. The boy is the 8th child of Attorney General Robert Kennedy.

BEAUTY, THY NAME IS LEGION:
The “Miss Universe” contest at Miami Beach again proves the irrefutable fact that beauty speaks an international language. Miss Brazil, Leda Vargas, takes the title from 15 finalists.

NICKLAUS TAKES PRO GOLF TITLE:
Jack Nicklaus, the 23-year-old gold whiz, out drives and out-putts the field to take the F G A title and add it to his Masters and Open crowns. He wins $13,000 to become the years second best money winner – next to Arnold Palmer.

IT’S SUCH A NICE, QUIET SPORT:
Men of the Rodeo circuit ride high, wide and handsome at the Salinas California events – even if they do bite the California dust on occasion….the prize money is substantial in this line work---but there are certain fixed expenses- like hospital bills.

DEATH TOLL MOUNTS
QUAKE FLATTENS YUGOSLAV TOWN
Scarcely more than rubble and ruin is left of the once thriving Yugoslav city of Skopje. Rescue teams continue to discover survivors almost miraculously among the ruins; but even so the death toll is expected to reach 1500 and the city itself, already 90 percent demolished will not be rebuilt.

HARRIMAN REPORTS TO PRESIDENT:
Under-secretary of State Averell Harriman arrives at Hyannisport, Massachusetts with a report on the successful nuclear test ban treaty negotiations for the President. Mr. Kennedy, addressing the nation, describes the treaty as a first step away from war.

WINDMILLS ARE TOURIST ATTRACTION:
Tourists with an eye and a camera for the past, flock to the tiny Dutch town of Kinderdijk, where seventeen windmills, two hundred years old, are put into operation during July and August. The great turning sails are irresistible, too, for Newsreel Camera.

NEW FILM SETS NEW FASHIONS:
Inspired by the UNIVERSAL film “THE THRILL OF IT ALL”, starring Doris Day and James Garner, are fashions shown on a Caribbean cruise. Dresses for every occasion reflect the casual chic of those worn in the picture.
